Measurement strategies

Designing an appropriate measurement strategy for a particular analytical question is not always obvious, since a number of factors have to be considered, whereby some of them might be difficult to define. A set of key questions generally precede the experimental design in analytical measurements and help to choose the measurement strategy, which is fit for the intended use – in the particular case of the content of this book – either for quantification, elemental ratio or isotope ratio analyses, accordingly.
TrainMiC® is a European programme for lifelong learning on how to interpret the metrological requirements in chemistry. It is operational across many parts of Europe via national teams. These teams use shareware pedagogic tools which have been harmonised at European level through the joint effort of many experts across Europe working as an editorial board. Organic fluorescent dyes are a fundamental component in biomedical research and diagnostic imaging. The major classes encompass polymethine dyes, xanthene dyes, 4,4'-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) dyes, phenoxazines, and rare earth metal complexes. These compounds have been synthesized in manifold variations to optimize their photophysical properties and physicochemical behavior in physiological media and to enable conjugation to targeting molecules and nanocarriers. Furthermore, stimuli-responsive structural motifs were designed to apply these fluorophores as sensors for disease-related physiological and molecular conditions. This chapter is devoted to the chemical base of optical imaging agents, covering the relevant properties of fluorophores and the synthetic concepts toward intelligent optical imaging probes.

While the possibilities of improving corrosion resistance (especially galvanic corrosion) by alloying are limited, surface finishing of magnesium alloys is the alternative for improving corrosion resistance. Due to the low corrosion potential of Mg and the danger of galvanic corrosion in the case of a coating defect, the choice of coatings is limited. This chapter will summarize the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys and the metallurgical possibilities to improve the corrosion resistance of the alloys and reviewing critically the most commonly used surface treatments and coatings for magnesium.
Laser hybrid welding technology provides a number of advantages, which in the previous decade have promoted its implementation in different branches of industry such as automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding and power generation. Some examples of the applications of laser hybrid welding are reviewed to demonstrate the technological and economic potential of this technology. The main objective of this chapter is to show some of the benefits and limitations of the process and to give some examples of how the number of applications could rise, taking into account the advantages of the new laser systems, optical components, arc power sources and sensor systems available nowadays.
This chapter summarizes the state of the art and current developments of guidelines for structural health monitoring (SHM) and performance control. Technical guidelines and standards for condition monitoring and technical diagnostics of rotary machines and for non-destructive testing are not reviewed in this chapter.
