A simple preparation of Cd17S4(SCH2CH2OH)26 clusters in aqueous solution leads to the formation of colorless blocky crystals. X-ray structure determinations revealed a superlattice framework built up of covalently linked clusters. This superlattice is best described as two enlarged and interlaced diamond or zinc blende lattices. Because both the superlattice and the clusters display the same structural features, the crystal structure resembles the self-similarities known from fractal geometry. The optical spectrum of the cluster solution displays a sharp transition around 290 nanometers with a large Absorption coefficient (~84,000 per molar per centimeter).

Separation of CO2. Microporous polyurethane networks were prepared based on a renewable resource. Betulin, extracted from birch bark, is used as a structure-directing diol monomer in A3-B2 monomers. The resulting microporous networks show very promising CO2/N2 selectivities. The state of adsorbed CO2 is analyzed by in situ NMR spectroscopy, and pure physisorption is proven. The preparation of monolithic materials is demonstrated as well.

Using a quadrupole mass spectrometer system the permeation of D2, He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe through EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber), Viton (fluoro rubber) and Silicone-rubber was measured as a function of temperature. The results for O-ring samples were compared with those for slab geometry. From the measured permeation functions the diffusion coefficients, the permeation coefficients and the solubilities of the gases in the elastomer materials were evaluated using a nonlinear fitting algorithm. The variations of these data with temperature yield the activation energies for diffusion and permeation as well as the heat of solution. The results confirm that the transmission of noble gases and of deuterium through elastomer materials is merely a physical process because the activation energies are far below common values for processes involving chemical reactions. The solubilities correlate well with the boiling temperatures of the gases and with the well depth of the Lennard-Jones interaction potential between the gas atoms. The diffusion coefficients monotonically decrease and the activation energies monotonically increase with increasing molecular diameter of the gases.

In den durchgeführten Versuchen erbrachten Trametes versicolor CTB 863 A. Lentinus cyathiformis CTB 67-02 B, Stereum spec.

The purpose of "The Metallographist":
The results of the important researches regarding metallography are disseminated throughout the scientific papers and transactions of scientific societies chiefly of France, England, Germany and the United States, and even if the busy engineer or metallurgist, the metal producer or consumer in general, had the necessary knowledge of the three languages, and easy access to these publications, he could not possibly find time to go over such an amount of literature in order to extract from it what is of interest and importance to him. This is precisely the work which The Metallographist proposes to do for its readers by presenting to them every three months a clear, exhaustive and comprehensive review of what has been accomplished in metallography during the previous quarter.
The most important articles and memoirs will be reproduced in full, while those of minor importance will be condensed, accompanied in every case by such explanatory notes as will make them comprehensible and fruitful for others besides specialists. The Metallographist will publish moreover, besides the results of the investigations carried on in the Boston Testing Laboratories, original articles by eminent authorities and active workers who have kindly promised their collaboration. The editor will never lose sight of the fact that the importance of these investigations, to the world at large, lies chiefly in their ability to lead to deductions of industrial value, and his presentation of the subject will be conducted accordingly.
