The application of a LIBS system is presented. A diode-pumped low energy laser (3 mJ, 1.5 ns, 100 Hz) and a compact NIR spectrometer are used. A scanner allows the two-dimensional element mapping. For the quantitative analysis calibration of the system is carried out with reference samples in a concentration range of chlorine of 0.05 wt.% to 2.5 wt.%. To determine the 2D distribution of harmful elements (Cl, C), concrete cores were drilled, split and analyzed directly. By comparing the chloride ingress and the carbonation, the interaction of both processes can be visualized in one measurement that takes less than 10 minutes with a drill core of 50 mm x 100 mm. Results obtained were compared and verified with standard measurements.
Es wird ein alternatives Verfahren zur schnellen zweidimensionalen Analyse der chemischen Zusammensetzung von Baustoffen vorgestellt. Dieses beruht auf der Kombination des Abtrags einer geringen Materialmenge durch einen gepulsten Laser, der Plasmaerzeugung und der Analyse der Lichtemission des Plasmas mittels optischer Spektroskopie. Es können prinzipiell alle Elemente gleichzeitig nachgewiesen werden. Damit ist es möglich einerseits Informationen über den Baustoff an sich als auch über den Eintrag potentiell schädigender Elemente (z. B. Cl, C, Na, K, S) zu gewinnen. Das Verfahren kann automatisiert im Labor oder als mobile Version direkt vor Ort eingesetzt werden. Es liefert zweidimensionale Bilder der Elementverteilung in Echtzeit. Es kann ohne große Probenvorbereitung z. B. direkt an der Querschnittsfläche eines Bohrkernes gemessen werden. Die Messung dauert nur wenige Minuten. Das Prinzip der Messung, die Vor- und die Nachteile, sowie die verfügbare Gerätetechnik für den Einsatz im Labor oder direkt am Bauwerk werden vorgestellt. Abschließend werden praktische Beispiele für die Anwendung des LIBS-Verfahrens zur Erfassung des Chlorid-Eintrages, der Karbonatisierung und der Verteilung von Schwefel präsentiert.

Binder remnants in historical mortars represent a record of the connection between the raw materials that enter the kiln, the process parameters, and the end product of the calcination. Raman microspectroscopy combines high structural sensitivity with micrometre to sub-micrometre spatial resolution and compatibility with conventional thin-sectional samples in an almost unique fashion, making it an interesting complementary extension of the existing methodological arsenal for mortar analysis. Raman spectra are vibrational fingerprints of crystalline and amorphous compounds, and contain marker bands that are specific for minerals and their polymorphic forms. Relative intensities of bands that are related to the same crystalline species change according to crystal orientations, and band shifts can be caused by the incorporation of foreign ions into crystal lattices, as well as stoichiometric changes within solid solution series. Finally, variations in crystallinity affect band widths. These effects are demonstrated based on the analysis of three historical mortar samples: micrometric distribution maps of phases and polymorphs, crystal orientations, and compositional variations of solid solution series of unreacted clinker grains in the Portland cement mortars of two 19th century castings, and the crystallinities of thermal anhydrite clusters in a high-fired medieval gypsum mortar as a measure for the applied burning temperature were successfully acquired.
In the last years, the Process Analytical Technology (PAT) research field has become of great importance due to its connection with the industrial world. This industry related research, along with the evolutionary progress that technology has seen lately, has allowed that key analytical techniques in an industrial environment have undergone a radical development. One of these techniques has been the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This technique, currently common in "online" industrial analysis, has seen a remarkable revolution, especially since the introduction of the microelectromechanical systems technology (MEMS) in the spectroscopy field. Nowadays it is possible to find compact spectrometers no bigger than a wristwatch in the market. Although there is an unavoidable question: can these compact spectrometers actually compete against the traditional spectrometers?
In this project different calibration parameters of two compact NIR spectrometers ("Spectral Engines Oy NIR-One Sensor NM2.0", with 1550 to 1950 nm range; and "NeoSpectra Si-ware", with 1300 to 2550 nm range) were evaluated, and the obtained results were compared with a reference spectrometer ("Bruker Optik GmbH Matrix-F", with 15000 to 4000 cm–1 range). In order to obtain the different calibration parameters, a sequence of quality performance tests were conducted. The results obtained after the different experiments carried out with both compact spectrometers prove that their performance is more than acceptable for routine analysis.
Afterward, model samples of different microplastics in soil at different known concentration were analyzed with all three spectrometers. Chemometric models capable to identify and classify microplastics in soil were established. For this analysis five of the most used plastics worldwide were used: polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). After the Principal component analysis (PCA), it can be seen that only the NIR-One NM2.0 is capable to differentiate all types of microplastics in soil at concentrations of 1–2 %, while the NeoSpectra Si-ware is unable to identify the PET sample.
The separation of two closely spaced defects in fields of Thermographic NDE is very challenging. The diffusive nature of thermal waves leads to a fundamental limitation in spatial resolution. Therefore, super resolution image reconstruction can be used. A new concerted ansatz based on spatially structured heating and joint sparsity of the signal ensemble allows for an improved reconstruction of closely spaced defects. This new technique has been studied using a 1D laser array with randomly chosen illumination pattern.
This paper presents the results after applying super resolution algorithms, such as the iterative joint sparsity (IJOSP) algorithm, to our processed measurement data. Different data processing techniques before applying the IJOSP algorithm as well as the influence of regularization parameters in the data processing techniques are discussed. Moreover, the degradation of super resolution reconstruction goodness by the choice of experimental parameters such as laser line width or number of measurements is shown.
The application of the super resolution results in a spatial resolution enhancement of approximately a factor of four which leads to a better separation of two closely spaced defects.
Wasserzeichen und Papierstrukturen können einen wesentlichen Beitrag bei der Analyse von Kunstobjekten auf Papier darstellen. An Fallbeispielen aus der gutachterlichen Praxis und Forschungsprojekten der Vergangenheit sollen die Möglichkeiten der Papier- und Wasserzeichenforschung bei Datierungen und Authentizitätsprüfungen demonstriert werden.
