The corrosion behavior of galvanized steels and zinc components under atmospheric exposure depends mostly on the corrosion product‐based cover layer formation under the prevailing conditions. The use of agar‐based gel electrolytes makes it possible to use electrochemical methods to obtain a characteristic value from these cover layers that describe their current and future protective capacity. It is shown here that different states of galvanized steel can be distinguished very well under laboratory conditions and that this method is also suitable for use under practical conditions. Based on the characteristic values and assuming future time of wetness, it is very easy to draw up a forecast for the future corrosion rate, which provides plausible values.
While alkali-activated binders offer certain advantages over traditional Portland cement binders, particu¬larly in terms of resistance against chemical attacks and potentially environmental footprint, their degra¬dation mechanisms remain incompletely understood at present, specifically carbonation. Thus, this study investigates the impact of natural and accelerated carbonation (1% and 4% CO2) on three different compositions of alkali-activated concretes: 100% calcined clay (C100) binder, 100% ground blast furnace slag (S100) binder, and a 40% calcined clay and 60% blast furnace slag blend (C40S60). C100 concretes exhibit faster carbonation kinetics, with five times greater natural carbonation depths than S100. This difference diminishes under accelerated carbonation, showing a 1.5 times difference for 1% CO2 and complete carbonation for 4% CO2 at 90 days. The results thus confirm that accelerated carbonation testing of low-Ca alkali-activated concretes yields results that are not representative of natural carbonation. The C40S60 sample demonstrates a carbonation profile similar to a CEM I concrete, i.e., a high carbonation resistance. Microstructure analysis indicates the formation of three polymorphs of calcium carbonate for S100 (calcite, vaterite, and aragonite), with a higher CO2 concentration favouring aragonite over vaterite. C100 exhibits no calcium carbonates; instead, sodium carbonates form, including trona for 4% CO2 and natrite for both accelerated tests. C40S60 shows calcium and sodium carbonates, although to a lesser extent, containing predominantly calcite and minor signals of natrite. Suitable compositions, like C40S60, prove as effective during natural or accelerated carbonation tests as conventional Portland cement concrete.
The present Ph.D. thesis provides a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the bulging-cracking relationship in laser beam welding of thick unalloyed steel sheets. It focuses on experimentally proving the existence of the bulging region and on developing a coupled multiphysics mathematical framework to analyze its influence on the three critical factors controlling the susceptibility to solidification cracking, namely the thermal, metallurgical, and mechanical factors.
The research employs a novel experimental setup, utilizing a combination of transparent quartz glass and thick unalloyed steel sheet, enabling real-time visualization of the weld pool geometry and confirming the existence of a distinctive bulging region. To deepen the understanding of these experimental insights, an extensive multiphysics mathematical framework was developed and rigorously verified and validated. This framework introduces an innovative approach using Lamé curves for accurately describing complex three-dimensional weld pool geometries, including the bulging region's characteristics. Through analytical solutions and numerical procedures, it facilitates the computation of solidification parameters, which are crucial for understanding the metallurgical aspects of crack formation. The framework also incorporates a mechanical model to assess and evaluate the local stress distribution within the bulging region.
The findings indicate that an elongated, sharply shaped bulging region significantly increases the susceptibility to solidification cracking. This is attributed to its adverse impact on the distribution and local dwell time of liquid metal residing at grain boundaries during solidification, combined with the localized tensile stresses identified in the bulging region.
In essence, this research contributes to the broader understanding of solidification cracking in laser beam welding of thick unalloyed steel sheets, with a particular focus on the bulging region. The insights and methodologies developed in this thesis are valuable for future research and advancements in the application of the laser beam welding technology for joining high-thickness unalloyed steel components.
Bruchmechanik-basierende Methoden können für die Ermüdungsbewertung von mechanischen Bauteilen angewendet werden, die Defekte oder Risse enthalten und zyklischen Belastungen ausgesetzt sind. Die Kenntnis des Risswachstumsverhaltens für kurze und lange Risse ermöglicht die Bestimmung sowohl endlicher als auch unendlicher Lebensdauer. Ein erstes Problem ergibt sich jedoch aus der empirischen Bestimmung von Ermüdungswerkstoffkennwerten, die je nach Prüfbedingungen, z. B. Prüfmethode, Frequenz und Spannungsverhältnis R, variieren. Dies ist auf die Rissschließeffekte und weitere Umgebungsphänomene zurückzuführen, die das Rissfortschrittsverhalten beeinflussen. Ein zweites Problem ist das Fehlen von Standardversuchsverfahren zur Bestimmung des Schwellenwerts gegen Ermüdungsrissausbreitung ΔKth in Abhängigkeit von der Rissausbreitung. Dies ist problematisch, da ΔKth mit der Zunahme der Rissschließeffekte im Kurzrissbereich zunimmt und seine ungenaue experimentelle Bestimmung zu großen Abweichungen bei der Bewertung und, was noch kritischer ist, zu nicht konservativen Vorhersagen führt. Mit dem Ziel, zuverlässigere und sicherere Bewertungsverfahren bereitzustellen, wird in dieser Arbeit eine Methode vorgeschlagen, die auf effektiven Risswachstumsdaten basiert, die bei hohen Spannungsverhältnissen (R ≈ 0,8) ermittelt wurden. Zur Beschreibung der Entwicklung der Rissschließeffekte wird ein Kurzrissmodell auf der Grundlage von zyklischen R-Kurven und CPLR-Daten verwendet. Die analytischen Vorhersagen werden mit experimentellen Daten verglichen, die zur Validierung des Verfahrens durchgeführt wurden, und die daraus entstandenen Unterschiede werden diskutiert.

Unlike conventional alloys, which typically consist of one main element, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) contain five or more principal elements, which broaden chemical complexity and with it a realm of synergistic mechanisms. The AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr HEA initiated a subclass of Al-containing refractory (r)HEAs that has recently drawn attention [2]. The alloy has a superalloy-resembling B2/bcc nanostructure, which inspired its name refractory high entropy superalloy (RSA). With high-temperature (HT) compressive strengths beyond conventional Ni-based superalloys, this nanostructure could be used for improved HT structural applications. However, in the application-relevant HT regime the Al-Zr-rich B2 phase decomposes to form a hexagonal Al-Zr-based intermetallic (Al4-xZr5; x: 0..1) [3,4]. This work explores the fascinating yet fatal micromechanisms associated to this phase transformation, in the context of creep, annealing and oxidation experiments performed between 800 and 1200 °C.
The material was produced by arc-melting and heat treatment in argon, which lead to grain boundaries decorated with up to 7%. Interrupted constant-load creep tests were performed under vacuum (at 10-4 Pa), at 900–1100 °C with external tensile stresses of 30–120 MPa. Oxidation experiments were separately conducted for 24 hours at 800 and 1000 °C in both dry (21% O2 + 79% N2) and humid (8% O2 + 74% N2 + 18% H2O) air. After the experiments, the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to reveal degradation mechanisms. Crystallographic texture, orientation relationships and stabilization of an oxygen-containing iso structure (Al4-xZr5(Ox-y); y: 0..x) of the Al-Zr-rich intermetallic are found and discussed.

Processing and cytocompatibility of Cu-doped and undoped fluoride-containing bioactive glasses

Sintered or additive-manufactured bioactive glass (BG) scaffolds are highly interesting for bone replacement applications. However, crystallization often limits the high-temperature processability of bioactive glasses (BGs). Thus, the BG composition must combine high bioactivity and processability. In this study, three BGs with nominal molar (%) compositions 54.6SiO2-1.7P2O3-22.1CaO-6.0Na2O-7.9K2O-7.7MgO (13–93), 44.8SiO2-2.5P2O3-36.5CaO-6.6Na2O-6.6K2O-3.0CaF2 (F3) and 44.8SiO2-2.5P2O3-35.5CaO-6.6Na2O-6.6K2O-3.0CaF2-1.0CuO (F3–Cu) were investigated. The dissolution and ion release kinetics were investigated on milled glass powder and crystallized particles (500–600 μm). All glasses showed the precipitation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystals after 7 days of immersion in simulated body fluid. No significant differences in ion release from glass and crystalline samples were detected. The influence of surface roughness on cytocompatibility and growth of preosteoblast cells (MC3T3-E1) was investigated on sintered and polished BG pellets. Results showed that sintered BG pellets were cytocompatible, and cells were seen to be well attached and spread on the surface after 5 days of incubation. The results showed an inverse relation of cell viability with the surface roughness of pellets, and cells were seen to attach and spread along the direction of scratches.
Derzeit ist die Instandhaltung von großen Betontragwerken wie Brücken oder Windenergieanlagen problemorientiert und von einem reaktiven Vorgehen geprägt. Das bedeutet, erst wenn sichtbare Schäden vorliegen, werden diese meist unter Beeinträchtigung des Betriebs instand gesetzt. Im Hinblick auf die Entwicklung von prädiktiven Instandhaltungsstrategien, deren Fokus in der langfristigen Bauwerksüberwachung und der Vorhersage von Schädigungsentwicklungen liegt, wurde die Anwendung von Ultraschallverfahren für die Identifizierung der Degradationsprozesse von Betontragwerken unter Ermüdungsbeanspruchung untersucht. Hierzu fanden Arbeiten im vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (BMWK) geförderten Verbundprojekt WinConFat zum "Einfluss der Probengeometrie und -größe auf die Ermüdung von Beton" an der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) und zu den "Methoden zur Zustandsanalyse von Windenergieanlagen" am Institut für Massivbau (IfMa) der Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) statt, welches zudem vom Deutschen Beton- und Bautechnik Verein e.V. (Forschungsvorhaben DBV-311) gefördert wurde. Dabei wurden verschiedene Einflussfaktoren auf die Schädigungsentwicklung unter Ermüdungsbeanspruchung wie die Probekörpergröße, das Belastungsniveau und die Betonfestigkeit untersucht. Als Schädigungsindikator und Vergleichsparameter wurden die Ultraschallgeschwindigkeit und der dynamische E-Modul des Betons verwendet. Um das Potential der Schädigungserfassung im Beton mittels Ultraschallprüfung umfassender zu bewerten, wurden zusätzlich Versuche an Betonproben unter monoton steigender Belastung, Kriechversuche, Temperaturversuche und Untersuchungen an großformatigen Balken durchgeführt.
The output of C&D waste is increasing year by year, among which low-quality recycled brick aggregates (RBAs) have not been well utilized and brought environmental burden. The durability of steam-cured concrete (HCC) is often compromised due to the detrimental effects of this curing regime on the long-term performance and microstructure development of the concrete material. To address this issue, this study investigates the potential of incorporating RBAs to improve the long-term durability of HCC. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of a small amount of RBA (10–20%) not only enhances the 28-d strength of HCC by 2.5–11.3%, but also improves its impermeability by mitigating heat damage effects. The combined application of fine and coarse RBA was found to effectively balance the negative effects of coarse RBA on the performance of HCC. Furthermore, the utilization of RBA in HCC was shown to have economic and environmental benefits. The results of this study demonstrate a simple and effective approach to improve the long-term durability of HCC while promoting the high-value utilization of solid waste.
