Auswahl von Passivsammlermaterialien für NSO-Heterocyclen im Grundwasser (2017)

NSO-Heterocyclen (NSO-H) finden sich zusammen mit polycyklischen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen (PAK) überwiegend an Teer- und Teeröl kontaminierten Standorten im Boden und Grundwasser. NSO-H sind ähnlich toxisch wie PAK, aber polarer und damit hydrophiler. Da NSO-H an kontaminierten Standorten lediglich einen geringen Anteil des Schadstoffinventars ausmachen, wurde ihnen in der Vergangenheit wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil und sie werden im Gegensatz zu PAK nicht routinemäßig erfasst. Aufgrund ihrer teilweise ausgeprägten Persistenz und der vergleichsweisen guten Wasserlöslichkeit bilden sie trotz der eher geringen Anfangskonzentrationen große Schadstofffahnen mit geringen Konzentrationen aus. Mikrobielle Abbauprozesse bewirken dabei im Verlauf der Fahne Veränderungen der Anteile der Einzelsubstanzen zueinander. In der Nähe des Schadensherdes dominieren meist PAK, im Abstrom sinkt deren Konzentration allerdings schneller, so dass hier die NSO-H die dominierende Schadstoffgruppe darstellen. Auf Grund des unterschiedlichen Abbauverhaltens kann die NSO-HBelastung über den PAK Summenparameter nicht zuverlässig bestimmt werden.
Freisetzung aus reaktiven Brandschutzbeschichtungen (2017)

Reaktive Brandschutzbeschichtungen bilden im Brandfall zum Schutz der Stahlträger einen wärmeisolierenden Schaum. Die Systeme beinhalten üblicherweise eine Grundierung, die reaktive Beschichtung und einen Deckanstrich. Jeder Bestandteil enthält eine komplexe Mischung aus verschiedenen Chemikalien wie Additiven, Füllstoffen und Lösungsmitteln, die bei Außenanwendungen in Kontakt mit Regenwasser freigesetzt werden können und negative Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt haben können. Bisher basiert die Bewertung durch das DIBt lediglich auf der Rezeptur der Beschichtungen. Erfahrungen aus dem Bodenschutz oder der Abfallverwertung zeigen, dass Gesamtgehalte alleine für eine Bewertung nicht ausreichen. Die durch Wasser mobilisierbaren Anteile werden mit Elutionsverfahren bestimmt. Ziel der vorgestellten Studie war es, die Eignung von Elutionsverfahren in Kombination mit Ökotoxizitätstests zur Beurteilung der Umweltgefährdung zu untersuchen.
Leachiing tests - a useful tool for the environmental impact assessment of construction products? (2018)

Construction products and waste materials used for construction can be in contact with the environment and may release potential harmful compounds. Information on the total content of these substances in the product is not sufficient to assess its envrionmental impact since it does not consider realistic exposure conditions.The impact of these compounds is often assessed by using the total content in the product. This estimation lacks realistic exposure conditions. Concerning the pathway to soil and groundwater by contact with rain or seepage water leaching tests, which were developed and standardized by the European Committee for Standardization, are available. While for secondary construction products and waste this investigation of the leaching behaviour is standard procedure and is already part of regulation in Germany (draft ordinance on reuse of mineral waste) and within Europe (landfill directive) the release from primary construction products got in the focus more recently. Several monitoring studies found unexpected high concentrations of substances used as herbicides and fungicides in surface water and stormwater originating from urban areas. As some of these compounds are even banned for the use in agricultural applications in Europe alternative sources as roof materials and façade coatings exposed to rain were suggested. Further field and laboratory tests confirmed construction products as sources of these substances in water. The aim of this presentation is to show exemplary results of existing leaching methods and underline the strength and weaknesses of the test system with selected examples from our work. We especially draw the attention to the research which is still needed to close the gap between the results of leaching experiments and the subsequent risk assessment of the products.
Leaching of brominated flame retardants - eluate analysis using XRF (2018)

Brominated flame retardants have widely been used for more than 50 years and have been frequently detected in environmental samples as surface water and fish. Leaching from construction products was identified as one possible source. The use of substances as e.g. hexabromocyclododecane (HBCCD) was restricted recently due to increasing concern about negative impacts on the environment and human health caused by the persistent, bio accumulative and toxic properties. New polymeric brominated flame retardants have been developed to replace HBCCD in expanded polystyrene (XPS), which is used for insulation of buildings. It is assumed that the release from the polymer is much smaller in comparison to release of small molecules as HBCCD. The release from the polymer may include monomers or small fragments of different size. Thus, a sum parameter is needed. According to Schlummer et al. it is possible to detect brominated molecules using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy by determination of brome content in XPS extracts. As only small brominated compounds can be extracted it also allows for the differentiation between the two classes of compounds. This method was applied to verify the presence of different kinds of flame retardants in XPS samples and to evaluate the leaching behavior.
Leaching of PFC from soils contaminated with PFC of different origin (2017)

Leaching tests are fundamental tools for the assessment of groundwater impact by contaminated soils concerning the soil-groundwater pathway. Such procedures are supposed to serve as the basis for a reliable leachate prognosis. They can be applied to determine the short and long term leaching behaviour as well as the source term of contaminated soils. For this purpose two types of leaching procedures have been validated in Germany for the examination of the leaching behaviour of frequently occurring organic substances (DIN 19528 - column test and DIN 19529 - batch test). A liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) of 2 L/kg and 10 L/kg) is the basis for the risk assessment which is implemented in different German regulations. The equivalence of test results for both tests for the same material under investigation has been investigated for a variety of pollutants in order to assess their reliability in compliance testing. However, for emerging pollutants there is hardly data available on this issue. Leaching tests on soils contaminated with emerging pollutants such as PFC (Perfluorinated Surfactants) are currently coming more into consideration due to the increasing detection of contaminated sites. Therefore, two soils were investigated in this study from different contamination source (paper sludge containing compost and fire distinguishing foam) using both leaching tests and both liquid-to-solid ratios. The leachability of the various perfluorinated compounds in relation to their content in solid matter was considered. Furthermore the eluate pre-treatment prior analysis (in particular liquid/solid separation step needed for batch tests) has been taken into account. The comparability of the results from batch and column is dependent on the solubility of the various compounds, on the L/S and on the turbidity in the eluates.
Leaching tests for determination of the mobile fraction in construction products (2017)

Construction products are often complex materials and often contain a large number of additives like plasticizers, solvents, stabilizers and pigments, which can be released to the environment during usage by leaching when the product is in contact with water. The impact of potentially hazardous substances on the environment depends on actual release rather than the total content in the products. Depending on the compound and on the matrix, only a small portion is transferred to the environment and becomes bioavailable. Leaching tests were developed and standardized by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) to determine the potential release of construction products.
