Laboratory studies with pedestrians could depend strongly on Initial conditions. Comparisons of the results of such studies require to distinguish carefully between homoge neous and heterogeneous populations.
A series of well-controlled laboratory studies were performed with participants with and without impairments. Individual pedestrian movement through a corridor and a bottleneck of all participants was recorded by wide-angle HD-cameras and the trajectories of each participant was extracted automatically by using PeTrack.
This contribution shows that considering participants with impairments in laboratory studies of pedestrian movement is feasible and reports preliminary the inuences of movement. Preliminary analyses imply two main conclusions and a preliminary forecast: _rst, social behaviour in laboratory studies is considerately and respectful; we did not observe altruistic behaviour; but considerately behaviour may encourage a reduced capacity at bottlenecks. Second, technical devices to improve movement require space and reduce capacity.
The response of many geotechnical systems, whose structural behavior depends on shearing effect, is closely related to soil structure interaction phenomenon. Experimentally it is found that the localisation of these effect happens at a narrow soil layer next to the structure. Numerically, this behavior can be modelled through interface elements and adequate constitutive models. In this work, a constitutive model in the framework of Generalized Plasticity for sandy soils has been chosen to be adapted for the interface zone.
From the direct shear experiments a sandy soil at loose and dense states under different normal pressures is considered. The adapted constitutive model is able to reproduce contraction and dilatation of the soil according to its relative density and it shows a good agreement with the experimental data.
Within the presented research project, experimental and numerical investigations were performed to develop a thin-shelled, modular, mobile element system made of a micro-reinforced ultra-high-performance ductile concrete (DUCON®). Material parameters were experimentally determined to adapt the material model within the numerical analysis applying the Drucker-Prager relationship. Afterwards, for validation of the numerical models, quasi-static and high-velocity impact tests were performed on plate-like structures. Finally, a suitable geometry of transportable barrier elements will be designed, which provides a maximum of resistance against impact by a minimum of weight and a maximum of mobility.

At the BAM test range in Horstwalde a number of field trials were conducted with a HE to investigate the free field propagation of shock waves and that resulting from reflection at structure surfaces. In addition, the behavior of the structure under the effect of the dynamic pressure waves after explosion was studied. For both the tests, (a) with a 30 cm thick reinforced-concrete wall and (b) in free field, pressure was measured over the entire test duration with piezoelectric sensors at distances of 5, 10 and 15 m from the detonation center for a range of HE quantities. Apart from this, high speed footage of the tests was recorded as well.
Corresponding to the field tests, numerical simulations of HE detonation were performed using APOLLO BLASTSIMULATOR, a CFD tool developed by Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institute. The accuracy of the simulation results as well as the computing times depend on the spatial grid resolution. The outputs of grid-independence study demonstrated that the peak pressure is higher and the pressure-rise is steeper for simulation runs with a finer grid. Remarkably however, the exponential pressure decline is independent of the grid resolution. Advantage was taken of this feature to obtain improved peak pressure values from comparatively coarser grids, in that curve-fitting was performed using the Friedlander Equation, which is well documented in literature.
The simulation results for pressure-time histories were compared with the field-test results at the corresponding measurement positions. The two data sets showed good correlation in case of scaled distances greater than 5 [m/kg1/3] for both peak pressure and impulse values. This conclusion could be drawn for both trial-types: free-field and with reflection wall. The near field region, on the other hand, necessitates further investigation for the validation of numerical simulation.
An effective protection of structures against impact from detonation of high explosives (HE) necessitate certain design specifications to be met. In the event of an explosion, accidental or intentional, any damage in its neighborhood (especially, for example, to the structures of strategic importance) should remain as low as possible. The behavior of a structure under the shock loading from an explosion will determine the extent of the damage. The investigation of the relevant phenomena that occur during the event of an explosion is the objective of this study.
In accordance with the test parameters, numerical simulations were performed and results were compared with those from field tests. The deformation of the wall under shock impact was simulated by implementing the appropriate interaction of fluid and structure. Moreover, the numerical pressure-time histories in front of the wall were compared with the ones measured in the field by means of piezoelectric pressure gauges, providing a validation for the shock waves’ propagation.

The shaft bearing capacity often plays a dominant role for the overall structural behaviour of axially loaded piles in offshore deep foundations. Under cyclic loading, a narrow zone of soil at the pile-soil interface is subject to cyclic shearing solicitations. Thereby, the soil may densify and lead to a decrease of confining stress around the pile due to microphenomena such as particle crushing, migration and rearrangement. This reduction of radial stress has a direct impact on the shaft capacity, potentially leading in extreme cases to pile failure. An adequate interface model is needed in order to model this behaviour numerically. Different authors have proposed models that take typical Interface phenomena in account such as densification, grain breakage, normal pressure effect and roughness. However, as the models become more complex, a great number of material parameters need to be defined and calibrated. This paper proposes the adoption and transformation of an existing soil bulk model (Pastor- Zienkiewicz) into an interface model. To calibrate the new interface model, the results of an experimental campaign with the ring shear device under cyclic loading conditions are here presented. The constitutive model shows a good capability to reproduce typical features of sand behaviour such as cyclic compaction and dilatancy, which in saturated partially-drained conditions may lead to liquefaction and cyclic mobility phenomena.
