Acetylene pressure cylinders are widely used in the industrial sector for welding, flame cutting, or heating.
Sometimes during work, not only with acetylene cylinders, fires occur and in this case the risk of destruction increases and the behavior of such an exposed cylinder is unpredictable. The purpose of this study is to identify those critical conditions when acetylene cylinders burst and explode in fires. In the present study, acetylene cylinders were exposed to fire conditions. For this purpose, a woodpile as a source of fire was chosen, tested, and evaluated. In addition to the fire condition, this option guaranteed reproducibility and similar conditions for all tests. The individual cylinders were equipped with thermocouples measuring the shell temperature, and half of them were prepared in order to measure the temperatures inside the cylinder. An important factor was the measurement of the amount of pressure that was achieved during the destruction of the cylinder. For this purpose, a pressure transducer was attached to the outlet of the cylinder valve. Exposed to direct fire, they can explode in 10 min, which was confirmed. The critical pressure of 40 bar has been reached in 6 min, followed by destruction after 7 min in fire. Cylinders with internal thermocouples were destroyed when lower pressure was achieved. This confirms the fact that any change of the pressure cylinder affects the original properties. After the tests, the fragments of the selected cylinders were subjected to material tests. The results obtained in these tests are the main source of information for understanding the behavior of acetylene cylinders in fire and the possibility of increasing the safety of intervening rescue services in an emergency.
This paper presents a method for processing acceleration data registered on a train and determining the health condition of a subway’s substructure. The acceleration data was converted into a dynamic deformation by applying a transfer function defined using the Empirical Mode Decomposition Method.
The transfer function was constructed using data produced on an experimental rig, and it was scaled to an existing subway system. The equivalent deformation improved the analysis of the dynamic loads that affect the substructure of the subway tracks because it is considered the primary load that acts on the track and substructure. The acceleration data and the estimated deformations were analyzed with the Continues Wavelet Transform. The equivalent deformation data facilitated the application of a health monitoring system and simplified the development of predictive maintenance programs for the subway or railroad operators. This method better identified cracks in the substructure than using the acceleration data.
Cementitious materials are frequently applied in environments in which they are exposed to acid attack, e.g., in sewer systems, biogas plants, and agricultural/food-related industries. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) have repeatedly been shown to exhibit a remarkably high resistance against attack by organic and inorganic acids and, thus, are promising candidates for the construction and the repair of acid-exposed structures. However, the reaction mechanisms and processes affecting the acid resistance of AAMs have just recently begun to be understood in more detail. The present contribution synthesises these advances and outlines potentially fruitful avenues of research. The interaction between AAMs and acids proceeds in a multistep process wherein different aspects of deterioration extend to different depths, complicating the overall determination of acid resistance. Partly due to this indistinct definition of the ‘depth of corrosion’, the effects of the composition of AAMs on their acid resistance cannot be unambiguously identified to date. Important parallels exist between the deterioration of low-Ca AAMs and the weathering/corrosion of minerals and glasses (dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism). Additional research requirements relate to the deterioration mechanism of high-Ca AAMs; how the character of the corroded layer influences the rate of deterioration; the effects of shrinkage and the bond between AAMs and substrates.
Intumescent coatings are used in civil engineering to improve the fire resistance of steel constructions. Due to the thin coating thickness and the profile-following application, the architectural appearance of the steel structure can be preserved. EN 13381-8 provides regulations to determine the contribution to the fire resistance of intumescent coatings applied to steel beams and columns. The scope of this standard excludes tension members and steel members with solid sections. For products that have already been successfully tested and assessed on beams and columns, EN 13381-10 offers the possibility based on unloaded fire tests to extend the scope of application of intumescent coatings to tension bars with solid sections. This approach contradicts the national safety level in Germany, where mechanically loaded testing is mandatory. Therefore, a new part of the test standard series EN 13381 is currently developed to enable the application of intumescent coatings on steel tension bars with solid section based on mechanically loaded fire tests. BAM has already carried out numerous fire tests on loaded steel tension members with intumescent coatings. Currently, in the BAM research project FIRESTEMIC, the influence of the steel bar orientation and the profile type on the thermal performance of intumescent coatings are investigated. Both questions concerning the thermal protection ability of intumescent coatings were analysed based on three different test sets, which were carried out in the tension furnace (Fig. 1a). The fire exposure corresponds to the standard temperature-time curve according to EN 1363-1.
This paper summarises the main findings from the fire tests conducted in the FIRESTEMIC project. The results serve as an experimental background for the proposal of the new standard. Regarding the bar orientation, a new test setup was developed and proposed for the new standard. The two tested commercial water-based intumescent coatings with applied dry film thickness from 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm showed only a slight dependence on the bar orientation. In terms of the steel profile type, circular and rectangular solid sections with identical section factor and applied dry film thickness were tested. It was observed that the circular solid bars with diameter 30 mm heat up faster compared to the solid rectangular bars with dimension 30×30 mm (Fig. 1b). Also at larger steel bars, i.e. diameter 40 mm and dimension 40×40 mm, the same trend occurred. Thus, it is recommended for the new test standard to allow a transfer of the test results from circular to rectangular solid sections. In addition, the paper will describe and explain the test and assessment procedure proposed for the newly developed standard.
During their life span, concrete structures interact with many kinds of external mechanical loads. Most of these loads are considered in advance and result in reversible deformations. Nevertheless, some of the loads cause irreversible, sometimes unnoticed changes below the macroscopic scale depending on the type and dimension of the impact. As the functionality of concrete structures is often relevant to safety and society, their condition must be known and, therefore, assessed on a regular basis. Out of the spectrum of non-destructive monitoring methods, Coda Wave Interferometry using embedded ultrasonic sensors is one particularly sensitive technique to evaluate changes to heterogeneous media. However, there are various influences on Coda waves in concrete, and the interpretation of their superimposed effect is ambiguous. In this study, we quantify the relations of uniaxial compression and uniaxial tension on Coda waves propagating in normal concrete. We found that both the signal correlation of ultrasonic signals as well as their velocity variation directly reflect the stress change in concrete structures in a laboratory environment. For the linear elastic range up to 30% of the strength, we calculated a velocity variation of −0.97‰/MPa for compression and 0.33%/MPa for tension using linear regression. In addition, these parameters revealed even weak irreversible changes after removal of the load. Furthermore, we show the time-dependent effects of shrinkage and creep on Coda waves by providing the development of the signal parameters over time during half a year together with creep recovery. Our observations showed that time-dependent material changes must be taken into account for any comparison of ultrasonic signals that are far apart in time. The study’s results demonstrate how Coda Wave Interferometry is capable of monitoring stress changes and detecting even small-size microstructural changes. By indicating the stated relations and their separation from further impacts, e.g., temperature and moisture, we anticipate our study to contribute to the qualification of Coda Wave Interferometry for its application as an early-warning system for concrete structures.

The oxidation of sulfur in aqueous solutions is an important process in several geochemical and industrial contexts. In concrete technology, it is particularly relevant for the protection of steel reinforcement in slag cement-based concretes, as the presence of sulfides affects the passivation of the steel and corrosion initiation in the presence of chlorides. However, the knowledge about the kinetics of sulfide oxidation in alkaline solutions, such as concrete pore solutions, is incomplete. To address this issue, we prepared solutions with 0.80 M NaOH, and nominally 10, 100 and 350 mM HS−, respectively, and followed the evolution of the sulfur species during bubbling with oxygen-containing gas (concentration 100% or 22%) using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the sulfur K-edge. Polysulfide, thiosulfate, sulfite and sulfate were identified and quantified via linear combination fitting of the spectra, using previously measured standards. A preliminary analysis of the results shows that the initial rate constant of sulfide oxidation depends strongly on the HS− concentration, while it less strongly depending on the oxygen concentration, in line with previous results for lower pH values. Approaches to fit the data to obtain the rate constants of all relevant reactions will be discussed.

This study aims to develop a real time structural health monitoring method by ultrasonic tests combined with advanced six component (6C) translation and rotation measurements. Conventionally, the investigation of the velocity and acceleration response in the translation direction is used to obtain the eigenfrequencies of structures. Recently the measurement of rotation has been considered to fully characterize the dynamic behavior of structures. This research undertakes the evaluation of a novel 6C sensor (IMU50-iXblue) with components originally developed for navigation for the purpose of bridge monitoring. However, as for all vibration recordings, there is a certain influence of environmental conditions (mainly temperature) which may affect evaluation and the results of structural assessment. We propose applying the cross-correlation function to the 6C ambient vibration signals to reconstruct wave propagation and using coda wave interferometry (CWI) to obtain internal velocity variation from waveforms. A field experiment on a large-scale prestressed concrete bridge model is presented. To verify that we are able to identify the pre-stress loss even in presence of temperature effects, we perform measurements in two different scales: the ultrasonic and output-only, vibration measurements. The change in the structural properties due to the pre-stress loss should be detected by the pulse velocity change. The results reveal both the performance and advantages of ultrasonic techniques and the capabilities of 6C sensors. To conclude, the application of CWI to wave signals contributes to a comprehensive assessment for bridge monitoring.
The acquisition and appropriate processing of relevant information about the considered system remains a major challenge in assessment of existing structures. Both the values and the validity of computed results such as failure probabilities essentially depend on the quantity and quality of the incorporated knowledge. One source of information are onsite measurements of structural or material characteristics to be modeled as basic variables in reliability assessment. The explicit use of (quantitative) measurement results in assessment requires the quantification of the quality of the measured information, i.e., the uncertainty associated with the information acquisition and processing. This uncertainty can be referred to as measurement uncertainty. Another crucial aspect is to ensure the comparability of the measurement results. This contribution attempts to outline the necessity and the advantages of measurement uncertainty calculations in modeling of measurement data-based random variables to be included in reliability assessment. It is shown, how measured data representing time-invariant characteristics, in this case non-destructively measured inner geometrical dimensions, can be transferred into measurement results that are both comparable and quality-evaluated. The calculations are based on the rules provided in the guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM). The GUM-framework is internationally accepted in metrology and can serve as starting point for the appropriate processing of measured data to be used in assessment. In conclusion, the effects of incorporating the non-destructively measured data into reliability analysis are presented using a prestressed concrete bridge as case-study.

This talk reports the findings of the WIPANO "Knowledge and Technology Transfer via Patents and Standards" research project "Safety of Prestressing Steels," founded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). A new test method for assessing the susceptibility of prestressing steels to hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is presented, which serves the demands of a lower scattering compared with the present standard. Moreover, the ability to differentiate between high susceptible and low susceptible prestressed wires is possible, modifying the method by hydrogen charging and surface preparation.
This study aims to develop a real-time monitoring method for the structural performance by ultrasonic testing in combination with six-component (6-C) translation and rotation measurements. So far, the recordings of the velocity and acceleration response in the translation direction have been used to obtain the eigenfrequencies of structures. Recently, measurement of rotation has been used to fully characterize the dynamic behavior of structures. In this research, 6-C sensors consisting of a three-component rotational seismometer and a three-component broadband seismometer are evaluated for their suitability for bridge monitoring. Since changes in environmental conditions such as temperature during vibration recordings affect the structural evaluation results, cross-correlation function is applied here to the 6-C ambient vibration signals to reconstruct the wave propagation on the one hand, and coda wave interferometry (CWI) is applied to obtain the internal velocity variation from waveforms on the other hand. In field tests on a large-scale prestressed concrete bridge model, it was verified whether the prestress loss can also be determined in presence of temperature effects. For this purpose, measurements were performed in two scales, ultrasonic and output-only vibration measurements. The change in structural properties due to the prestress loss should be detected by the pulse velocity change. The results demonstrate both the performance and advantages of ultrasonic techniques and the capabilities of 6-C sensors. Thus, the application of CWI to wave signals can contribute comprehensively to bridge monitoring.
Introduction of a monitoring system for Bingham fluids in additive manufacturing with concrete
(2022)
Freeform additive manufacturing of concrete structures is a rising technology in civil engineering with several fascinating advantages. Nonetheless, to ensure reliability and structural integrity, standards and quality control are required in the future to bring this technology into the market. As the concrete is manufactured continuously, continuous quality control of the printing process is also required, i.e. comprehensive process monitoring. At BAM, a test rig will be installed, enabling the printing of concrete structures with a maximum size of 2 m x 1 m x 1 m (l x w x h). Here, process monitoring is the focus of the test rig. In this study, we show the results of the first pump tests, including the measurement of several parameters such as temperature and pressure along the supply system, i.e. from the concrete pump to the printer head.

This contribution introduces an investigation of a large-scale prestressed concrete bridge model (“BLEIB” structure at the BAM-TTS open air test site) by means of on-site cooperative measurements. This bridge has an external post-tensioning system and has been instrumented with the ultrasonic transducers, temperature sensors and optical fibers for Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). Our experiment was designed to test the suitability of the novel 6C sensors developed within the framework of the GIOTTO project – the IMU50. The IMU50 sensor enables vibration measurements in translation along three axes and rotation around three axes. The geophone sensors were considered for complementary measurements of vertical velocity response. In the experiment, several perturbations were achieved by controlling the external influence factors such as loading and prestressing changes. The aim of the integrated measurement strategy was to fully observe the results of the condition change and to verify the effectiveness of multiple sensors for bridge monitoring.
To reveal the corrosion resistance of casing steel/mortar interface in CO2 injection condition, sandwich samples were prepared and exposed up to 20 weeks in aquifer fluid under 10 MPa and 60 °C. Cross section analysis revealed the crevice corrosion as main mechanism instead of pitting corrosion, which would be expected to happen in the extremely high Chloride concentration. Detailed analysis using EDS line scan shown the slow diffusion of Chloride, suggesting why pitting did not happen after 20 weeks. To mimic the passivated steel surface, the steel coupon was passivated in simulated pore solution having pH 13.5 for 42 days. The passivated coupon was further exposed to NGB solution for 28 days. Electrochemical characterization was performed along the exposure processes to reveal the change in impedance, indicating the corrosion resistance of steel casing/mortar interface.

Significant Cu-deposition and ‑precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. High-alloyed materials prevent the disturbing Cu-agglomeration. Pb-deposition and ‑precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. No negative Pb-effect could be observed in combination with high-alloyed steels. High alloyed corrosion resistant alloys are suitable and shall be chosen for future design of the piping system, either in massive or in cladded form, if formation of crevices with non-metallic materials can be excluded!
To reveal the corrosion resistance of casing steel/mortar interface in CO2 injection condition, sandwich samples were prepared and exposed up to 20 weeks in aquifer fluid under 10 MPa and 60 °C.
Cross section analysis revealed the crevice corrosion as main mechanism instead of pitting corrosion despite very high concentration of Cl in NGB.
EDS element line scan analysis of the 20-week-exposed metal/mortar coupon showed Chloride distribution, which still not reached the metal/mortar interface, explaining no pitting was observed.
It was confirmed that FeCO3 cannot protect the steel surface in CO2 saturated NGB.
To verify the protective possibility of passivation happened on casing steel/mortar interface, simulated pore solution was synthesized and used to passivate the steel for 42 days. OCP and EIS confirmed the formation of passive layer.
The 42 day passivated layer was broken during the first minute of exposure in CO2 saturated NGB.
However, due to high concentration of Ca2+, a new carbonate CaCO3 dense layer was formed, increased the corrosion resistance of steel surface.
In the course of the deconstruction of the "Bridge of the 20th anniversary of the GDR" at the Altstädter Bahnhof in Brandenburg a. d. Havel, new information on the initiation of hydrogen-induced stress cracks was obtained. BAM was commissioned by the Brandenburg State Road Administration to participate in a corresponding joint project which is financed by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. The added value of the new information gained in this project goes beyond the specific structure. It describes unexpected new damage patterns that can be transferred to other structures with concentrated tendons (tendon block method and Baur-Leonhardt method) and were previously unknown in this form. These should be made known to other developers to enable them to initiate any necessary actions.
Due to the high corrosivity that are present in road tunnel structures, cleaning and maintenance work on stainless steel components in the tunnels is carried out at regular intervals in the tunnels, which means that parts of the lanes or the whole tunnel have to be temporarily closed. To reduce these traffic disruptions and maintenance costs, it is important to reduce the work that is needed for cleaning and maintenance of stainless steel components in road tunnels. One possibility is the identification and utilization of better suited alternatives to the commonly used austenitic stainless steels AISI 316L and AISI 316Ti. Thus, a field exposure study was carried out in different road tunnels throughout Germany to qualify different duplex and lean duplex stainless steels for tunnel constructions.
The proposed scientific poster gives an overview of results after the first three years of exposure in three different road tunnels. Samples of different stainless steels were placed in different areas of the tunnel – at lane height and at the ceiling. Some samples were exposed under sheltered conditions. Pit depths were evaluated on the free surface and in crevice areas after each year of exposure. The investigations show that duplex stainless steels have a comparable or even better corrosion resistance than austenitic steels in tunnel atmospheres.
Numerical models built as virtual-twins of a real structure (digital-twins) are considered the future ofmonitoring systems. Their setup requires the estimation of unknown parameters, which are not directly measurable. Stochastic model identification is then essential, which can be computationally costly and even unfeasible when it comes to real applications. Efficient surrogate models, such as reduced-order method, can be used to overcome this limitation and provide real time model identification. Since their numerical accuracy influences the identification process, the optimal surrogate not only has to be computationally efficient, but also accurate with respect to the identified parameters. This work aims at automatically controlling the Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) surrogate’s numerical accuracy for parameter identification. For this purpose, a sequence of Bayesian model identification problems, in which the surrogate’s accuracy is iteratively increased, is solved with a variational Bayesian inference procedure. The effect of the numerical accuracy on the resulting posteriors probability density functions is analyzed through two metrics, the Bayes Factor (BF) and a criterion based on the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. The approach is demonstrated by a simple test example and by two structural problems. The latter aims to identify spatially distributed damage, modeled with a PGD surrogate extended for log-normal random fields, in two different structures: a truss with synthetic data and a small, reinforced bridge with real measurement data. For all examples, the evolution of the KL-based and BF criteria for increased accuracy is shown and their convergence indicates when model refinement no longer affects the identification results.
Damage Assessment of Civil Structures Using Wave Propagation Analysis and Transmissibility Functions
(2022)
A common damage detection method in civil engineering is to monitor dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and modal shapes, which are directly related to the structural stiffness. However, the discrepancy in measured natural frequencies may result from environmental changes, the soil-structure interaction or effects caused by earthquakes. This makes it difficult to decide whether the local change in structural properties is caused by damage or other factors. To address this challenge and thus improve the current damage detection method, the wave propagation analysis method and the transmissibility relationship were considered. In our study, the wave propagation field in structures was reconstructed by applying the Normalized-Input-Output-Minimization (NIOM) method to vibration recordings. Wave velocities and transmissibility functions were considered as reference values for the damage indicators. This paper demonstrates the evaluation of local property changes in two examples of large-scale structures: a 14-story RC building and a 64 m long pedestrian bridge. The proposed damage indicators show a clear correspondence to structural changes.
Recently, non-destructive testing in civil engineering (NDT-CE), in particular of concrete components, has successfully mastered the leap from research to practice. Several methods have been established for field inspections to determine the concrete cover of reinforcement or to estimate the compressive strength as well as other parameters related to the concrete material. In addition, the application of nondestructive testing is indispensable, if information about the inner structure - such as the location of rebars and tendon ducts or the damage-related condition assessment to detect grouting defects, honeycombs, delamination, or corrosion - is required. Besides the selection of a suitable NDT method and an appropriate inspection system, the reliability of the results depends largely on the person who applies the non-destructive inspection technique and evaluates the inspection results. To ensure a high quality of non-destructive concrete evaluation as well as to keep the uncertainty caused by the inspection personnel to a minimum, structured, consistent and regulated theoretical as well as practical training of inspection personnel is essential. To close this gap, the subcommittee of education (UA-A) within the committee for NDT-CE of the German Society for Nondestructive Testing (DGZfP) has been reactivated in 2018 to establish uniform training standards for nondestructive concrete inspections in the long term. The subcommittee consists of scientists, practitioners, authorities, and clients. So far, the national standard DIN 4871 “Non-destructive testing - Qualification and Certification of NDT personnel in Civil Engineering (NDT-CE)” was developed and is currently under review. This standard considers the civil-industry-specifics, for example, that standards for NDT of concrete, as well as related product standards with a few exceptions, still do not exist at the moment. Within this presentation, the concept, the connection to ISO 9712 and other standards as well as an overview of the developed German standard DIN 4871 will be presented.

Potential Mapping - What could we measure and what should we able to detect – guideline B03 of DGZfP
(2022)
“Electrochemical potential mapping according to guideline B3 of DGZfP (German Society for Non-Destructive Testing) is a recognized technique for the localization of corroding reinforcing steels.
Areas of corroding reinforcement steel can be located in a non-destructive manner by means of this procedure. Half‐cell potential measurements are used in order to detect chloride‐induced corrosion. However, it is not recommended in order to assess the risk of carbonation‐induced corrosion. For this purpose, determining the carbonation depth and the concrete cover appears more appropriate. The content of this specification exclusively refers to the application of mobile, local variable reference electrodes, which are only placed on the concrete surface while measuring. The technique distinguishes itself thereby from the range of corrosion monitoring systems with stationary installed reference electrodes and sensor systems, respectively, whereby it is possible to continuously track measurements within the area of the installed electrodes. However, these methods are not dealt with in this specification.”
Structural health monitoring (SHM) intends to improve the management of engineering structures. The number of successful SHM projects – especially SHM research projects – is ever growing, yielding added value and more scientific insight into the management of infrastructure asset. With the advent of the data age, the value of accessible data becomes increasingly evident. In SHM, many new data-centric methods are currently being developed at a high pace. A consequent application of research data management (RDM) concepts in SHM projects enables a systematic management of raw and processed data, and thus facilitates the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods to the SHM data. In this contribution, a case study based on an institutional RDM framework is presented. Data and metadata from monitoring the structural health of the Maintalbrücke Gemünden for a period of 16 months are managed with the RDM system BAM Data Store, which makes use of the openBIS data management software. An ML procedure is used to classify the data. Feature engineering, feature training and resulting data are performed and modelled in the RDM system.

A global transition towards more sustainable, affordable and reliable energy systems is being stimulated by the Paris Agreement and the United Nation's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This poses a challenge for the corrosion industry, as building climate‐resilient energy systems and infrastructures brings with it a long‐term direction, so as a result the long‐term behaviour of structural materials (mainly metals and alloys) becomes a major prospect. With this in mind “Corrosion Challenges Towards a Sustainable Society” presents a series of cases showing the importance of corrosion protection of metals and alloys in the development of energy production to further understand the science of corrosion, and bring the need for research and the consequences of corrosion into public and political focus. This includes emphasis on the limitation of greenhouse gas emissions, on the lifetime of infrastructures, implants, cultural heritage artefacts, and a variety of other topics.
Calcined clays as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) have been identified and credited to be a viable solution in mitigating the CO2 emissions related to cement production and consumption. Calcined clays range from a variety of different clay types based on an assortment of varying minerals and compositions. While extensive data is available on kaolinitic clays (based on the 1:1 clay type), other clays such as brick clays (based on the 2:1 clay type) are currently understudied, although such clays are largely more available than the kaolinitic clays.
The aim of this thesis is to draw attention to the varying compositions present in two selected brick clays in Germany and elaborate on how such compositions affect their suitability to be used as SCMs in blended cement systems. The novelty of this thesis explains the relationship between the reactivity of the bricks to their varying compositions and their suitability for their employment as SCMs. This was based on their chemical and physical transformations in the calcination temperature range 650–900 or 950 °C, and the performance of the calcined brick clays in blended cement systems measured by their heat evolution, strength development and durability-related properties. The results of their performance were compared to two kaolinitic clays with varying compositions. While the kaolinitic clays generally exhibited the best performance as SCMs, the brick clay with a lower Fe2O3 content showed promising results similar to the kaolinitic clays when an optimum calcination temperature is applied and when substituted at a moderate cement substitution rate. Thus, this finding promoted further efforts made to improve the reactivity of the brick clay by producing a mixed clay composed of 50 % brick clay (with lower Fe2O3 content) and 50 % kaolinitic clay. The mixed clay was compared to the two individual brick clays and one kaolinitic clay, whereby optimum calcination conditions were performed in large-scale simulating an industrial-scale production of SCMs. All calcined clays exhibited pozzolanic reactivity, with the performance of the brick clays inferior to the kaolinitic clay, however, the mixed clay performed very similar to the kaolinitic clay.
At a similar degree of hydration compared to plain Portland cement, the good performance of the mixed clays was especially evident in the strength development and improved chloride penetration resistance, which was caused by a refinement in the pore structure in the cementitious systems. Moreover, it was deduced that not only the high surface area, but also, the solubility of Si and Al ions in the resulting calcinate of the mixed clays plays a significant role when calcined at ~600–700 °C, which points to viable options for optimal employment of brick clays in cementitious systems.
The contribution discusses the processing and analysis of data generated on two different ways of investigations for impact damage in reinforced concrete structures. Damage investigations are essential to determine type and characteristics of damage and thus the residual capacity. Damage describing data is generated using two different types of investigation, a non-destructive tomographic as well as numerical examination. Subsequently, data of both sources was merged and analysed. Within the research project “Behaviour of structural components during impact load conditions caused by aircraft fuel tank collision” reinforces concrete plates were damaged by impact loading, see Hering (2020). Afterwards the damaged specimens were investigated tomographically as well as numerically using several methods and models. Aim of the presented research work was to specify an objective comparability of numerical data with experimentally determined damage patterns and based on this, to establish a quantitative damage evaluation.

While developing a standard for the determination of safety characteristics for hybrid mixtures the authors discovered, that, beside the ignition source, the mixing procedure is the main difference between the single-phase standards for dusts and gases. The preparation of hybrid mixtures containing a flammable gas and a flammable dust in the 20 L-sphere can be realized in different ways. Either the flammable gas is filled only in the sphere or only in the dust container or in both. In previous works, almost always the first method is applied, without giving any information on the accuracy of the gas mixtures. In this work the accuracy of the gas mixtures and the results of the tests applying two methods of mixing were studied. No significant influence of the mixing method itself on the safety characteristics explosion pressure pex and the normalized rate of pressure rise (K-value) was found. Obviously, homogenization of the gas mixtures can be obtained sufficiently by the turbulence that is caused during the injection from the dust container into the explosion chamber within a short time. However, the mixing procedure has a great influence on the accuracy of the gas amount of the mixtures obtained. Without modifying the 20 L-sphere by installing precise pressure sensors, assuring its tightness and performing gas analysis, it must be expected, that the accuracy of the gas mixtures is very low. This has a significant influence on the measured safety characteristics and may lead to unsafe facilities or unnecessary expensive safety measures.
Reinforced concrete is a widely used material for power generation structures, where load scenarios like impact loadings need to be considered. In this context mechanical splicing systems for the connection of reinforcement bars are of specific interest and impact resistance for the splicing systems has to be verified. High speed tensile tests need to be performed on splicing systems for reinforcement bars to confirm the capability of the coupler to resist impact loading. Furthermore, the ability of the reinforcement steel to dissipate energy by ductile behaviour with pronounced plastic strains should be confirmed by these tests. During the last decades comprehensive experiences were developed at BAM performing high speed tensile tests on reinforcement bars as well as on several splicing systems. For the lack of available standards defining these tests in detail an appropriate test procedure was developed and continuously optimized during this period at BAM. The test procedure is partially based on testing principles adapted from available standards. The main intention behind this test procedure is to perform high-speed tensile tests with a specific constant strain rate generated at the specimen. Furthermore, main objective was to establish a procedure to guarantee the comparability of test results for different diameter of reinforcement as well as for different types of couplers. Besides the pure execution of the high-speed tensile tests, the test specification also declares how to evaluate the measurements and the test results. Finally, some typical results will be presented in this contribution.
The ‘Gänstorbrücke’ bridge between the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm is one of the best-monitored bridges all over Germany. In addition to an already active bride monitoring system, we have equipped the bridge with 30 ultrasonic transducers to explore the monitoring possibilities at an in-service large-scale reinforced concrete structure with continuous active ultrasonic measurements. The monitoring system is based on the detection of small changes in the entire signal, especially the multiply scattered parts of the recording, the so-called coda. Applying Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI), subtle changes in the signal can be detected and related to changing velocities in the area between source and receiver. A comparison of the results from coda wave interferometry with the strain measurements of the permanent monitoring system shows a correlation between strain measurements and CWI results. We discuss the challenges of changing environmental conditions, pose for interpretation of the results, and highlight the advantages of embedded versus externally attached ultrasonic transducers in permanent bridge monitoring, especially when coda wave interferometry is applied.

Within a DFG-funded research group, we investigate the possibility of concrete damage assessment with coda waves. Coda wave interferometry (CWI) can be a valuable asset to structural health monitoring (SHM) as we can detect small signal changes and quantify them with the calculation of relative velocity changes. By equipping an in-service road bridge with more than 24 embedded ultrasonic transducers, we want to analyze how methods developed within the research group perform in an uncontrollable environment. We evaluate individual source-receiver combinations for detection of temporal changes as well as the entire installed sensor array to create maps of material change comparing two distinct states of the bridge.
To ensure safety when transporting dangerous goods, it is important to specify the flow properties of the respective solid filling substance of the packagings. For this purpose, the angle of repose is currently used for the UN approvals in Germany. Measurements were carried out on 12 powdery or granular substances applying the angle of repose measuring methods customary in the test centres. The results of the methods differ significantly from each other. In addition, some of the techniques cannot be applied for very cohesive or coarse-grained materials. The results for the angle of repose show a strong scatter for some constellations (coefficient of variation more than 20 %). Safety during transport of dangerous goods cannot be guaranteed with this currently practiced system of measuring the angle of repose. As a consequence, an alternative parameter to characterize the flow properties of bulk materials should be used in the recognized test centers for dangerous goods packagings, such as the Hausner ratio. This approach leads to more precise test results for the substances examined (maximum coefficient of variation 2.8 %). It also has advantages in terms of applicability and occupational safety.
Since the flow properties are safety-relevant, both in terms of mechanical safety and safety against the release of dangerous substances, the testing practice in the recognized test labs should be improved and standardized.
Concrete has a long history in the construction industry and is currently one of the most widely used building materials. Especially precast concrete elements are frequently utilized in construction projects for standardized applications, increasing the quality of the composite material, as well as reducing the required building time. Despite the accumulated knowledge, continuous research and development in this field is essential due to the complexity of the composite combined with the ever-growing number of applications and requirements. Especially in view of global climate change, design aspects as CO2 emissions and resource efficiency require new mix designs and optimization strategies. A result of the material’s high complexity and heterogeneity on multiple scales is that utilizing the full potential with changing demands is highly challenging, even for the established industry. We propose a framework based on an ontology, which automatically combines experimental data with numerical simulations. This not only simplifies experimental knowledge transfer, but allows the model calibration and the resulting simulation predictions to be reproducible and interpretable. This research shows a way towards a more performance oriented material design. Within this talk we present our workflow for an automated simulation of a precast element, demonstrating the interaction of the ontology and the finite element simulation. We show the automatic calibration of our early-age concrete model [1, 2], to improve the prediction of the optimal time for the removal of the form work.
Investigation of temperature effects on ultrasonic velocity in a prestressed concrete bridge model
(2022)
Ultrasonic measurements have recently been applied in the context of structural health monitoring in civil engineering. The ultrasonic method is very sensitive to environmental conditions and material property changes, which might be caused by prestress losses and loading effects on the bridge. However, it remains a challenge to identify the damage mechanisms causing structural property changes from the above mentioned factors influencing ultrasonics. The focus of this contribution is to investigate the correlation between ultrasonic velocities and temperature by the coda wave interferometry (CWI) analysis. Long-term monitoring of a prestressed concrete bridge model under field conditions was carried out to observe the effect of temperature. The homogeneous change in concrete caused by temperature was revealed by applying the CWI method. The threshold value of the best correlation coefficients for the linear regression of temperature and ultrasonic velocity changes was also studied. Experimental assessment will provide a ratio for temperature correction to evaluate the pre-stressing force decrease and its consequences on crack opening or extension.
Investigation of temperature effects on ultrasonic velocity in a prestressed concrete bridge model
(2022)
Ultrasonic measurements have recently been applied in the context
of structural health monitoring in civil engineering. The ultrasonic method is very sensitive to environmental conditions and material property changes, which might be caused by prestress losses and loading effects on the bridge. However, it remains a challenge to identify the damage mechanisms causing structural property changes from the above-mentioned factors influencing ultrasonics. The focus of this contribution is to investigate the correlation between ultrasonic velocities and temperature by the coda wave interferometry (CWI) analysis. Long-term monitoring of a prestressed concrete bridge model under field conditions was carried out to observe the effect of temperature. The homogeneous change in concrete caused
by temperature was revealed by applying the CWI method. The threshold value of the best correlation coefficients for the linear regression of temperature and ultrasonic velocity changes was also studied. Experimental assessment will provide a ratio for temperature correction to evaluate the prestressing force decrease and its consequences on crack opening or extension.

The attenuation of wave amplitudes is ruled by the planar, cylindrical or spher-ical geometry of the wave front (the geometric or power-law attenuation) but also by the damping of the soil (an exponential attenuation). Several low- and high-frequency filter effects are derived for the layering and the damping of the soil, for the moving static and the distributed train loads and for a homoge-neous or randomly heterogeneous soil. Measurements of hammer- and train-induced vibrations at five sites have been analysed for these attenuation and filter effects. The measured attenuation with distance can be discribed by gen-eralised power laws and some reasons will be discussed. The theoretical filter effects can well be found in the measurements.
A few layer/multilayer graphene (MLG) with a specific surface area of BET=250 m2/g is proposed as an efficient multifunctional nanofiller for rubbers. The preparation method, i.e., ultrasonically-assisted solution mixing of master batches followed by two-roll milling, strongly influences the dispersion in the elastomeric matrix and is fundamental for the final properties. When homogenously dispersed, single stacks of only approximately 10 graphene sheets, with an aspect ratio of 34, work at low loadings, enabling the replacement of large amounts of carbon black (CB), an increase in efficiency, and a reduction in filler load. The appropriate preparation yielded nanocomposites in which just 3 phr are sufficient to significantly improve the rheological, curing, gas barrier properties, electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as mechanical properties of different rubbers, as shown for chlorine-Isobutylene-Isoprene rubber (CIIR), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), natural rubber (NR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). 3 phr of MLG tripled the Young’s modulus of CIIR, an effect equivalent to 20 phr of CB. The stronger interactions between MLG and NR or SBR also resulted in a reduction in the elongation at break by 20% and 50%, respectively, while the same parameter was hardly changed for CIIR/MLG and NBR/MLG. CIIR/MLG and NBR/MLG were stiffer but just as defomable than CIIR and NBR. The strong reinforcing effect of 3 phr MLG was confirmed by the increase of greater than 10 Shore A in hardness. MLG reduces gas permeability, increases thermal and electrical conductivities, and retards flammability, the latter shown by the reduction in heat release rate in the cone calorimeter. We investigated MLG also as a synergist for reducing the aluminium trihydrate loading in flame retardant hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene (HNBR), polybutadiene chloroprene (BR/CR), and chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber(CSM). The higher the nanofiller concentration is, the greater the improvement in the properties. For instance, the permeability decreased by 30% at 3 phr of MLG, 50% at 5 phr and 60% at 10 phr, respectively. Moreover, the MLG nanocomposites improve stability of mechanical properties against the effects of weathering. In key experiments an increase in UV-absorption and a pronounced radical scavenging were proved as stabilizing mechanisms. In a nutshell, MLG is an efficient multifunctional nanofiller ready to be used for innovative rubber development.
Due to the high flammability and smoke toxicity of polyurethane foams (PUFs) during burning, distinct efficient combinations of flame retardants are demanded to improve the fire safety of PUFs in practical applications. This feature article focuses on one of the most impressive halogen-free combinations in PUFs: expandable graphite (EG) and phosphorus-based flame retardants (P-FRs). The synergistic effect of EG and P-FRs mainly superimposes the two modes of action, charring and maintaining a thermally insulating residue morphology, to bring effective flame retardancy to PUFs. Specific interactions between EG and P-FRs, including the agglutination of the fire residue consisting of expanded-graphite worms, yields an outstanding synergistic effect, making this approach the latest champion to fulfill the demanding requirements for flame-retarded PUFs. Current and future topics such as the increasing use of renewable feedstock are also discussed in this article.
To prevent future alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) damage, which has occurred frequently in the German highway network in recent years, a new regulation has been drafted. This regulation severely limits the use of alkali-sensitive aggregates by requiring that their suitability be verified by certified inspectors using newly developed AAR concrete tests that involve the external supply of alkali. This has led to a significant limitation in the number of aggregates usable for concrete pavements. A novel AAR avoidance strategy is now being pursued, which aims to enable the use of borderline alkali-sensitive aggregates through the application of an internal water-repellent treatment. The addition of water repellents during concrete production should significantly reduce the ingress of water and external de-icing salts into the concrete pavement, thus reducing the potential for AAR damage. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests to assess the suitability of this new AAR prevention strategy. Representative, highly AAR-susceptible road paving concrete made with an alkali-sensitive greywacke and various water repellents were used as the basis for these experiments. The tests for concrete suitability included determining the conventional fresh and hardened concrete properties as well as concrete prism tests with external alkaline supply. Building on these results, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyses of de-icing-salt intrusion as well as microscopic examinations for verification of the AAR characteristics were carried out. The results of the AAR concrete tests with external alkaline supply support the conclusion that, when hydrophobic agents containing a suitable active ingredient are used, the AAR damage process in road paving concrete can be sufficiently prevented.

Hunting is a potentially dangerous phenomenon related to the lateral oscillation of the wheels that impacts the rails and causes the wear of the infrastructure’s components. Therefore, the analysis and timely detection of hunting can lead to the application of corrective maintenance tasks, reducing damages, and costs and even derailments as a result. In this work, the vibration response of a finite element model of a rail with hunting-induced loads by a single wheel is analyzed in three directions: longitudinal, lateral, and vertical. The contact patch forces are calculated by means of Simpack® using the Kalker linear theory and the contact Hertz theory. The system is solved by using the Newmark-_ approach. The results of the deflection and vibration analysis, following the proposed methodology, show how the different characteristics of the loads impact the rail.
In general, pH-sensitive colorants such as phenolphthalein are applied on freshly split surfaces of building structures to determine the state of carbonation. For years, it has been known that the aerosols of phenolphthalein are suspected of being carcinogenic. Hence, more work has currently being done on alternative indicators for the use in research and the use on construction sites. Over the past years, mainly pH indicators from other research areas and natural dyes were investigated for their usability to cementitious systems. This paper presents the experimental results of using phenolphthalein solution bound in agar-agar gel. This gel-bound indicator allows the future use of the already known phenolphthalein dye without the health hazards for the user. To demonstrate the flexibility of the gel-bound colorant, different application forms of the indicator were carried out and assessed. In addition, the results obtained by the different methods were statistically evaluated to ensure validity.
The accuracy of the results was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and IR spectroscopic studies as reference methods. It has also succeeded to demonstrate the comparability of the results achieved by the gel-bound colorant with the results of the common sprayed application method. As an additional gain in knowledge, comparative results of indicator tests, TGA analysis, and FTIR investigation are shown.
The mechanical and geometrical properties of impact targets greatly influence the outcome of a drop test. The International Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) as well as ISO 2248 describe the characteristics of impact targets for drop tests of dangerous goods packagings.
According to these regulations, the impact target’s surface needs to be unyielding, under testing conditions non-deformable, flat, and integral with a mass at least 50 times that of the heaviest packaging to be tested. The problem is that many production facilities, especially manufacturers of corrugated fibreboard boxes, do not have their own testing device with the required 50 times mass ratio of the impact target for a regulation compliant drop test during series production. Furthermore, at UN level it is considered necessary to revise these requirements.
In the present paper, the impact target requirements are examined in detail and compared with those in other technical areas (e.g., impact target for container for the transport of radioactive materials). A research method is being developed to investigate the dependency between the mass ratio of the packaging and the target as well as the damage resistance of a drop tested package in relation to specific design characteristics. The results are of high relevance for industry purposes and intended to ensure a uniform level of safety assessment for the mechanical testing of dangerous goods packagings.
Multiscale modeling of heterogeneous structures based on a localized model order reduction approach
(2022)
Many of today’s problems in engineering demand reliable and accurate prediction of failure mechanisms of mechanical structures. Herein, it is necessary to take into account the heterogeneous structure on the lower scale, to capture the underlying physical phenomena. However, this poses a great challenge to the numerical solution as the computational cost is significantly increased by resolving the lower scale in the model. Moreover, in applications where scale separation as the basis of classical homogenization schemes does not hold, the influence of the lower scale on the upper scale has to be modelled directly. This work aims to develop an efficient concurrent methodology to model heterogeneous structures combining the variational multiscale method (VMM) [1] and model order reduction techniques (e. g. [2]). First, the influence of the lower scale on the upper scale can be taken into account following the additive split of the displacement field as in the VMM. Here, also a decomposition of the global domain into subdomains, each containing a fine grid discretization of the lower scale, is introduced. Second, reduced approximation spaces for the upper and lower scale solution are constructed by exploring possible solutions for each subdomain based on a representative unit cell. The local reduced spaces are designed such that local contributions of each subdomain can be coupled in a conforming way. Thus, the resulting global system is sparse and reduced in size compared to the direct numerical simulation, leading to a faster solution of the problem. There is a rising attention of using numerical models for effcient structural monitoring and ensuring the structure's safety. Setting up virtual models as twin for real structures requires a model identification process calculating the unknown model parameters, which mostly are only indirectly measurable. This is a computationally very costly inverse optimization process, which often makes it unfeasible for real applications. Effcient surrogate models such as reduced order models can be used, to overcome this limitation. But the influence of the model accuracy on the identification process has then to be considered. The aim is to automatically control the influence of the model's accuracy on the identification. Here, a variational Bayesian inference approach[3] is coupled with a reduced forward model using the Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) method. The influence of the model accuracy on the inference result is studied and measured. Therefore, besides the commonly used Bayes factor the Kullback-Leibler divergences between the predicted posterior pdfs are proposed. In an adaptive inference procedure, the surrogate's accuracy is iteratively increased, and the convergence of the posterior pdf is analysed. The proposed adaptive identification process is applied to the identification of spatially distributed damage modeled by a random eld for a simple example with synthetic data as well as a small, reinforced bridge with real measurement data. It is shown that the proposed criteria can mirror the influence of the model accuracy and can be used to automatically select a suffciently accurate surrogate model.
PGD model with domain mapping of Bead-on-Plate weld simulation for wire arc additive manufacturing
(2022)
Numerical simulations are essential in predicting the behavior of systems in many engineering fields and industrial sectors. The development of accurate virtual representations of actual physical products or processes allows huge savings in cost and resources. In fact, digital twins would allow reducing the number of real, physical prototypes, tests, and experiments, thus also increasing the sustainability of the production processes and products’ lifetime. Standard numerical methods fail in providing real time simulations, especially for complex processes such as additive manufacturing applications.
This work aims to build up a reduced order model for efficient wire arc additive manufacturing simulations by using the proper generalized decomposition (PGD) [1,2] method. Model order reduction is a popular concept to decrease the computational effort, where each evaluation of the reduced forward model is faster than evaluations using classical methods, even for complex models. The simulation of a moving heat source leads to a hardly separable parametric problem, which is solved by a new mapping approach [3]. Using this procedure, it is possible to create a simple separated representation of the forward model.
In this contribution, a PGD model is derived for the first part of wire arc additive manufacturing: bead-on-plate weld. An excellent agreement with a standard finite element method is shown. The reduced model is further used in a model calibration set up, speeding up calibrations and ultimately leading to an optimized real-time simulation.

Experimental study on the performance of the standardized test method for detonation flame arresters
(2022)
Flame arresters are autonomous protection systems and are among the constructive explosion protection measures that limit the effects of an explosion.
In this study, the performance of the standardized test method regulated in the DIN EN ISO 16852 standard for in-line flame arresters for stable and unstable detonations, which is mainly designed for atmospheric conditions, is examined. In an interlaboratory comparison, experiments are performed for different pressures before ignition and explosion groups according to the standardized test method. The experimental data is analyzed in detail to further optimize the test method and to thus achieve an improved reproducibility of detonation tests at high pressures, especially regarding the deflagration to detonation transition.
Based on these results, an improved test method for detonation flame arresters will be developed, which will ensure better reproducibility as well as applicability under non-atmospheric conditions.
Due to the corrosion resistance of carbon steel, bridge constructions are currently protected against corrosion by applied coating systems. These coating systems need to be renewed after approximately 25 50 years. Galvanized constructions without any welding areas at the construction site could be prepared as grouted joints and can be used without any renewing for about 100 years.
Surface applied corrosion inhibitors (SACI) are widely used to mitigate corrosion process of steel reinforcement in concrete. But they remain controversial as to their effectiveness and the ability to compare materials from different manufacturers
and technologies. They are applied onto the surface of
hardened concrete and penetrate towards steel reinforcement. This paper discusses the corrosion inhibition performances of
dual-phase surface applied corrosion inhibitor and the efficiency of the corrosion inhibitor is assessed by selected testing procedures in BAM laboratories.
In the recent years, more and more products in construction and automotive industry are bonded by adhesive tapes instead of mechanical fasteners but there is no sufficient understanding of how these bonded, layered materials behave in fires. Our research project gives an insight of how adhesives and substrates interact with each other in different fire scenarios and how flame retardants function in pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes. A systematic investigation on the burning behavior of PSA tapes as free-standing films, as top layers on different substrates and as sandwich-like adhesive joints was performed. The burning behavior of free-standing PSA tapes and those used as a coating was significantly improved by using phosphorus-based flame retardants. Furthermore, it was shown that, depending on tape structure and substrate, the PSA tape can lower the fire risk by acting as an intermediate protection layer in bonded materials.
Numerical models are an essential tool in predicting and monitoring the behavior of civil structures. Inferring the model parameters is a challenging tasks as they are often measured indirectly and are affected by uncertainties. Digital twins couple those models with real-world data and can introduce additional, systematic sensor uncertainties related to the sensor calibration, i.e. uncertain offsets and calibration factors.
In this work, the challenges of data processing, parameter identification, model selection and damage detection are explored using a lab-scale cable stayed bridge demonstrator. By combining force measurements in the cables with displacement measurements from both laser and stereo-photogrammetry systems, the elastic parameters of a three-dimensional finite element beam model are inferred.
Depending on the number of sensors and the number of datasets used, parametrizing the sensor offsets and factors, leads to model with over 100 parameters. With a real-time solution of the problem in mind, a highly efficient analytical variational Bayesian approach is used to solve it within seconds. An analysis of the required assumptions and limitations of the approach, especially w.r.t. to the computed evidence, is provided by a comparison with dynamic nested sampling in a simplified problem.
Finally, by inferring the value of additional damage parameters along the bridge, the method is successfully used to detect the location of an artificially introduced weak spot in the demonstrator bridge.
Self-ignition Behaviour of Bulk Materials: How Reliable is the Extrapolation of Laboratory Tests?
(2022)
The self-ignition behaviour of bulks is usually determined with the aid of isoperibolic or adiabatic hot storage tests; the sample volumes here are typically in the range of approx. 100 cm³ to several litres. The extrapolation to technically relevant volumes holds, however, considerable uncertainties. To reduce these uncertainties, a test stand was set up that allows to investigation sample sizes of up to 1000 dm³. These allow the study of selfignition behavior closer to the conditions that prevail in practice. The suitability (or unsuitability) of the established methods (including dangerous goods classification tests) were to be demonstrated and influencing variables that cannot be measured on a laboratory scale were to be determined.
In addition, various analytical methods were used for the determination of reaction kinetic data of solid bulk materials and to predict the self-ignition behaviour of large storages. These are thermal analyses such as differential scanning calorimetry DSC, simultaneous thermal analysis STA as well as microcalorimetry for highprecision measurement of heat flows.
Complete test series using all mentioned test methods will be presented for crosslinked polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) and conclusions regarding the applicability of the extrapolation methods will be discussed. Hot storage tests up to semi-industrial scale and their combination with various thermoanalytical methods allow a much more precise prediction of the self-ignition behaviour of large bulks. A further promising approach to estimate their heat release rates, and hence, the risk of self-ignition under technical conditions, is the use of microcalorimetric methods.
Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is a new composite material comprising high-performance concrete and textile reinforcement from textile yarns with a matrix, usually consisting of epoxy resins (ER). The most significant advantage of ER is the homogenization of all filaments in the yarn and full utilization of its tensile potential. Nevertheless, ER matrix is a critical part of TRC design from the perspective of the fire resistance due to its relatively low resistance at temperatures of approximately 120 C. This work expands the previously performed mechanical tests at normal temperatures with cement suspension (CS) as a non-combustible material for the yarn matrix. Here, the mechanical properties of CS matrix at elevated temperatures were verified. It was found that the addition of polypropylene fibers into HPC negatively affected the mechanical results of CS matrix specimens. Simultaneously, thermal insulation effect of the covering layers with different thicknesses did not significantly influence the residual bending strength of specimens with CS matrix and achieved similar results as reference specimens. Furthermore, all specimens with ER matrix progressively collapsed. Finally, CS as a textile reinforcement of yarn matrix appears to be a suitable solution for increasing the temperature resistance of TRC structures and for substituting synthetic resins.

Iron dust explosion characteristics with small amount of nano-sized Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 particles
(2022)
Iron powder, as one of the most abundant metal fuels that can be used as recyclable carriers of clean energy, is a promising alternative to fossil fuels in a future low-carbon economy. It may pose a potential explosion hazard during the process of processing, storage, transport, and reduction/oxidation (redox). The explosion characteristics of iron dust in air were undertaken via a 20 L spherical explosion chamber with an emphasis on minimum explosion concentration (MEC) of iron dust. The alternative method of combustion duration time (tc) was used to determine MEC and compared with the standardized over pressure method. Two kinds of nano-sized iron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) were used as inertants to determine the inhibition effect of different oxidation products. The iron dust explosion products with various shapes and sizes were found to be able to grow up 4–6 times of the iron dust for the first time. Adding small amount of Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 could reduce the explosion severity and sensitivity of iron dust. The MEC data determined by both methods were comparable. The addition of 5 % oxide has obvious inhibition effect under 1500 g/m3 concentration. With the increase of oxide concentration to 10 %, the inerting effect increases, and the MEC of iron dust increases more than 3 times. The increase of dust concentration will weaken the inerting effect. When the concentration increases from 500 g/m3 to 3000 g/m3, the weakening effect of 10 % Fe2O3 on the explosion pressure decreases from 38.45 % to 2.24 %, and 10 % Fe3O4 decreases from 46.21 % to 10.63 %. Unlike coal, biomass or aluminum dusts, the iron dust explosion was found to have a unique secondary acceleration of pressure rise rate for the first time. These results provide a fundamental basis to mitigate the iron dust explosion via solid inerting method without adding extra elements.
The explosion characteristics of anthracite and bituminous coals in O2/N2 ambience were experimentally studied via a 20-L spherical explosion chamber with various ignition energies of 2, 5 and 10 kJ. A novel method based on combustion duration time was proposed for the first time, with an emphasis on the determination of the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC). The values of LOC determined by the alternative method were almost consistent with those obtained by using the standardized overpressure method, where the LOCs were above 21.6%, 19.8%, and 13.2% for anthracite coal and 11.4%, 9.6%, and 9.0% for bituminous coal when the ignition energy is 2, 5, and 10 kJ, respectively. But the newly proposed method was found to be much less affected by the ignition energy compared with the standardized overpressure method, taking combustion duration time as an explosion criterion thus had a higher efficiency and required fewer experiments. The results also showed that as oxygen concentration decreases from 21.6% to 14.4%, the maximum explosion pressure decreases from 0.4334 MPa to 0.1034 MPa for anthracite coal and from 0.5664 MPa to 0.3981 MPa for bituminous coal, respectively. Moreover, the effect of ignition energy varied with varying volatile matter content and ignition mechanism of coal dusts. The higher the volatile content, the less sensitive it is to the ignition energy. The newly proposed method will provide a reference for the new standard development, hazard analysis, explosion prevention and suppression by involving the use of inert gases of combustible powder industries.
There are several standardized ignition sources in use for the determination of explosion characteristics of gases, vapors and dusts. In the standards the ignition source is stated, but they vary in stating other characteristics like burning duration, energy or burning volume. Since heat is not visible under normal circumstances a Schlieren-Technique was used to make the full heating volume and not just the flames visible. While an earlier paper of the authors focused on the ignition energy and burning duration of four standardized ignition sources, this paper focuses on the initial igniting volume, the ratio between initial igniting volume and the test-vessel size and other phenomena that were observed with the Schlieren-Technique.
Emanating from developing flame retarded biocomposites, we have proposed renewable natural fibers (including keratin) taken from industrial waste as an authentic sustainable approach. More recently, we have investigated non-vegan flame retardant approaches. This paper loves to give you an insight into our ongoing projects on biogenic industrial wastes like leather, bone meal, and insects. Materials were characterized multi-methodically, flame retardant modes of action quantified, decomposition mechanism proposed, and synergisms explained. Considering the large quantities of leather waste (LW) in industrial-scale production, we underline LW as multifunctional bio-adjuvants. LW enhances the flame retardancy of poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) (EVA) containing phosphorus flame retardants (P-FR). Products/by-products of the invertebrate and vertebrate farming, respectively, are promising bio-based adjuvants in flame retarded bio-epoxy thermosets. While the addition of bone meal yields the formation of an inorganic shield, protein-based powders from insects provide an intumescent behavior. In combination with a P-FR superior charring and self-extinguishing are obtained.
