Multiscale modeling of heterogeneous structures based on a localized model order reduction approach
(2022)
Many of today’s problems in engineering demand reliable and accurate prediction of failure mechanisms of mechanical structures. Thus, it is necessary to take into account the heterogeneous structure on the smaller scale, to capture the underlying physical phenomena. However, this poses a great challenge to the numerical solution since the computational cost is significantly increased by resolving the smaller scale in the model. Moreover, in applications where scale separation as the basis of classical homogenization schemes does not hold, the influence of the smaller scale on the larger scale has to be modelled directly. This work aims to develop an efficient concurrent methodology to model heterogeneous structures combining the variational multiscale method (VMM) and model order reduction techniques. First, the influence of the smaller scale on the larger scale can be taken into account following the additive split of the displacement field as in the VMM. Here, also a decomposition of the global domain into subdomains, each containing a fine grid discretization of the smaller scale, is introduced. Second, local reduced approximation spaces for the smaller scale solution are constructed by exploring possible solutions for each subdomain based on the concept of oversampling and the solution of the associated transfer operator problem. Herein, we propose to choose the training data based on the solution of a reduced global problem to incorporate the actual physical behaviour of the structure of interest and to extend it by random samples to ensure sufficient approximation capabilities in general. The local reduced spaces are designed such that local contributions of each subdomain can be coupled in a conforming way. Thus, the resulting global system is sparse and reduced in size compared to the direct numerical simulation, leading to a faster solution of the problem.

To prevent future alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) damage, which has occurred frequently in the German highway network in recent years, a new regulation has been drafted. This regulation severely limits the use of alkali-sensitive aggregates by requiring that their suitability be verified by certified inspectors using newly developed AAR concrete tests that involve the external supply of alkali. This has led to a significant limitation in the number of aggregates usable for concrete pavements. A novel AAR avoidance strategy is now being pursued, which aims to enable the use of borderline alkali-sensitive aggregates through the application of an internal water-repellent treatment. The addition of water repellents during concrete production should significantly reduce the ingress of water and external de-icing salts into the concrete pavement, thus reducing the potential for AAR damage.
This paper presents the results of laboratory tests to assess the suitability of this new AAR prevention strategy. Representative, highly AAR-susceptible road paving concrete made with an alkali-sensitive greywacke and various water repellents were used as the basis for these experiments. The tests for concrete suitability included determining the conventional fresh and hardened concrete properties as well as concrete prism tests with external alkaline supply. Building on these results, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyses of de-icing-salt intrusion as well as microscopic examinations for verification of the AAR characteristics were carried out.
The results of the AAR concrete tests with external alkaline supply support the conclusion that, when hydrophobic agents containing a suitable active ingredient are used, the AAR damage process in road paving concrete can be sufficiently prevented.
In Germany, BAM is the competent authority in the field of dangerous goods transport. The international dangerous goods transportation rules are presented and their adaptation into German law is described. BAM is responsible for dangerous goods packaging testing, manufacturer surveillance, packaging approvals and inspection of IBC and provides “Gefahrgutregeln” (GGR) to define the processes, e.g. of dangerous goods packagings approvals and surveillance.”
A prediction software has been developed by BAM. The following topics have still be solved. A realistic irregularity spectrum can be derived from axle-box measurements. It agrees wel with the spectrum used for the high-speed 2 project in the United Kingdom. In addition, the scattering of axle pulses should be included. This mid-frequency component can also be found in the HS2 procedure. Finally, the reduction in case of a tunnel line compared to a surface line should be included. Some measurement results of BAM, HS2 and other institutes show a certain mid-frequency reduction. This is due to the load distribution of the tunnel which yields softer axle pulses and the scattered axle impulses are reduced.
In diesem
In this presentation, a cost-efficient distributed fiber optic measurement system based on Rayleigh scattering is shown. The distributed digital incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR) method is devel-oped for detection of significantly large strain in the range from 3 % up to 10 % as required by end users. For this purpose, a vector network analyzer used in the I-OFDR is replaced by a compact and costeffective digital data acquisition system. This digital emitting/receiving unit enables the recording of the complex transfer function carrying information about the local deformations along the entire sensing fiber.
Numerical simulators, such as finite element models, have become increasingly capable of predicting the behaviour of structures and components owing to more sophisticated underlying mathematical models and advanced computing power. A common challenge lies, however, in calibrating these models in terms of their unknown/uncertain parameters. When measurements exist, this can be achieved by comparing the model response against measured data. Besides uncertain model parameters, phenomena like damage can give rise to further uncertainties; in particular, quasi-brittle materials, like concrete, experience damage in a heterogeneous manner due to various imperfections, e.g. in geometry and boundary conditions. This hardens an accurate prediction of the damaged behaviour of real structures that comprise such materials.
In this study, which draws from a data-driven approach, we use the force-version of the finite element model updating method (FEMU-F) to incorporate measured displacements into the identification of the damage parameters, in order to cope with heterogeneity. In this method, instead of conducting a forward evaluation of the model and comparing the model response (displacements) against the data, we impose displacements to the model and compare the resulting force residuals with measured reaction forces. To account for uncertainties in the measurement of displacements, we endow this approach with a penalty term, which reflects the discrepancy between measured and imposed displacements, where the latter is assumed as unknown random variables to be identified as well. A Variational Bayesian approach is used as an approximating tool for computing posterior parameters. The underlying damage model considered in this work is a gradient-enhanced damage model.
We first establish the identification procedure through two virtual examples, where synthetic data (displacements) are generated over a certain spatially-dense set of points over the domain. The procedure is then validated on an experimental case-study; namely a 3-point bending experiment with displacement measurements resulting from a digital image correlation (DIC) analysis.
Ultrasonic Coda Wave interferometry has the potential to detect minute changes in scattering materials like concrete. By permanently installing ultrasonic transducers in concrete, DFG Research unit CoDA aims to develop methods for concrete damage assessment in Germany's aging infrastructure. To test the methods developed in simulations and laboratory experiments on a large scale, we have implemented several ultrasonic transducers at the Gänstorbrücke Ulm, one of Germany's most monitored road bridges. Since fall 2020 we are monitoring parts of the center of the Bridge, as well as an abutment, and compare the results to the commercial monitoring system. All data is recorded with a self-made data collection device, the so-called W-Box, and analyzed with different coda wave-based algorithms to detect signal and volumetric velocity changes. The long-term measurements show that the influence of temperature changes on strains and therefore ultrasound velocity changes calculated with coda waves can be monitored. The capabilities and limitations of the coda wave-based monitoring system are tested in a controlled experiment. Static loading using a truck with varying loads at several positions allows the calibration of the system to improve the detectability of possibly damaging loads and changes induced by this loading. A map of velocity change analyzing data from this load experiment shows that the influence of load on the material and strain distribution can be detected with array measurements.
This talk provides a brief overview on some geomechanical phenomena and problematic issues in the field of offshore wind-energy geotechnics, with reference to their associated challenges for a numerical analysis/simulation. These may include large deformations, fluid coupling and grain-scale phenomena, all of which are generally difficult to be addressed with conventional FE techniques.
These challenges are illustrated here with a practical example for the retrofit of axially loaded piles using compaction grouting techniques. In this case, the mechanical effects of the retrofit may be analysed with standard FE techniques, but require the adoption of strong assumptions, while the injection process itself can only be analysed with special techniques such as the MPM.
Finally, an LBM-DEM framework for the micromechanical analysis of such problems is introduced and a practical application for the estimation of the soil resistance to driving (SRD) in layered profiles is discussed.

Muon tomography applied to assessment of concrete structures: First experiments and simulations.
(2022)
Non-destructive techniques for reinforced or prestressed concrete inspection such as ultrasound or radar have found regular, successful practical application but sometimes suffer from limited resolution and accuracy, imaging artefacts or restrictions in detecting certain features. Until the 1980s X-ray transmission was used in case of special demands and showed a much better resolution than other NDT techniques. However, due to safety concerns and cost issues, this method is almost never used anymore. Muon tomography has received much attention recently. Novel detectors for cosmic muons and tomographic imaging algorithms have opened new fields of application. As a first step towards practical application in civil engineering and as a proof of concept we used an existing system to image the interior of a reference reinforced 600 kg concrete block. Even with a yet not optimized setup for this kind of investigation, the muon imaging results are at least of similar quality compared to ultrasonic and radar imaging, potentially even better. In a second step, we have performed simulations to assess the potential for a set of important testing problems such as grouting defects in tendon ducts. The next steps include the development of mobile detectors and optimizing acquisition and imaging parameters.
Composites in Fire and Flame
(2022)
Overview over the research results of the BAM in the field fire retardancy of composites. In different applications the flame retardancy of composites targets on different fire protection goals in the fire scenarios ignition, developing fire, and fully developed fire. Efficient solutions are tailored to pass a distinct fire test and to fit to a specific material. Flame inhibition as main flame retardancy mode of action combined with a minor mode of action in the condensed phase is general very efficient approach for composites. Alternatively residue design is demanded to achieve good results with only condensed phase mechanisms. Improving the fire stability asks for protective fire residues.
The aim of the project LeBeDigital is to present opportunities of digitalization for concrete applications and show a way towards a performance oriented material design.
Due to the high complexity of the manufacturing process of concrete and the range of parameters affecting the effective composite properties, a global optimization is challenging.
Currently, most optimization is only carried out on a narrow scope related to the respective players, e.g. a mix optimization for a target strength, or a design optimization for minimum weight, using a given mix. To enable a path toward a full global optimization
requires a reproducible chain of data, accessible for all contributors.
We propose a framework based on an ontology, which automatically combines experimental data with numerical simulations. This not only simplifies experimental knowledge transfer, but allows the model calibration and the resulting simulation predictions to be
reproducible and interpretable. In addition to an optimized set of parameters, this setup allows to study the quality and uncertainty of the data and models, as well as giving information about optimal experiments to improve the data set.
We will present the proposed optimization workflow, using the example of a precast concrete element. The contribution will focus on the workflow and challenges of an interoperable FEM formulation.
A conclusion on the WIPANO research project "Safety of Prestressing Steel" was presented in the final committee meeting at the end of the project. The project's exciting findings and recommendations for a new method were discussed with the audience of national and international stakeholders of the prestressing steel industry and representatives of inspection bodies and standardization.
The screening of coatings shows that the modification by adding individual pigment was not sufficient to protect carbon steel even during a short-term exposure, indicated by the discoloration after only seven days of exposure.
Electrochemical tests indicated that the coating cathodically protects carbon steel or slows down the corrosion reaction.
A long-term exposure test confirmed that the PANI/SiO2 modified coating successfully protects the carbon steel in the Sibayak artificial geothermal water at 150 °C for 6 months.
The evaluation of thermal properties is probably an underrated tool for the onsite health monitoring of concrete structures. The photothermal approach offers a possibility to realize a real onsite measurement. This contribution presents the application of the photothermal approach under lab conditions on three different concrete types. The obtained results were compared with those of a commercial device based on the Transient Plane Source (TPS) method. Both agreed well within the estimated uncertainty ranges and therefore demonstrate the applicability of the photothermal method for this kind of investigations. First results of a concrete sample with different water contents support the potential of this method for the characterization of concrete in general.
A simple and fast prediction scheme is presented for train-induced ground and building vibrations. For the emission, finite-element boundary-element or multiple-beam-on-continuous-soil models of the track have been analysed and approximated by faster track-on-Winkler-soil models. The vehicle-track interaction due to irregularities yields the excitation forces. For the transmission of waves in the soil, the wavenumber integral of the compliance of layered soils has been evaluated. The calculation time is reduced for the prediction by using the solution of a homogeneous half-space with a frequency-dependent wave velocity (the dispersion) of the soil. For the immision, many 2 and 3-dimenisonal finite-element building models have been investigated, and a good approximation has been established by a 1-dimensional soil-wall-floor model. In addition, the axle sequence of the train, the quasi-static and the “scattered” response of the soil, and the wave propagation from a tunnel to a pile foundation of a building have been included.
Usually, geometric irregularities are considered as the main cause of ground vibrations from trains. A varying stiffness of the track, the track support and the soil can also generate ground vibrations. The regular stiffness variation of the track on and between the sleepers results in a deterministic dynamic axle load. The random stiffness variation of the track support yields also dynamic axle loads. The dynamic axle loads are generated by the varying wheel displacements under the static axle load by the acceleration of the unsprung mass of the rail vehicle. The random stiffness variation has a second effect. The pulses from the passage of the static axle loads are superposed regularly to the quasi-static response, but also irregularly to yield a “scattered” part of the axle pulses. The same holds for a random variation of the soil stiffness. All these effects of stiffness variations have been calculated by wavenumber-domain multi-beam track models, a random finite-element soil model and the superposition of axle impulses in a stochastic simulation. The results are confronted with many measurements at different sites. It is concluded that the stiffness variation of the track and the soil generate an important ground vibration component near railway lines.
Vibration measurements have many causes and many technical and natural sources. Problems can sometimes be solved by short-term measurements, but in many cases, a long-term measurement is necessary. In long-term measurements of days, weeks, months and even years, it is easy to collect a huge quantity of raw data, but at the end, the post-processing of these data can be exhausting (for example one-year vibration data of a wind energy tower). A software has been developed which con-sists of measuring and evaluation routines where the measuring routines can operate different meas-uring systems and different measuring cards. The main advantage of this software is the fact that the interesting evaluations can be integrated in the measuring process so that the characteristics of the vibration can be extracted without storing all the raw data. Only important time segments are stored, for example train passages. The overall concept of the software and the main evaluation routines will be described in some details. Examples of our measurement experience will illustrate the capabilities of the software. 1) Surveying construction work in nearby sensitive buildings (for example an old wind tunnel), including a stable alarm system and meaningful vibration limits. 2) Prediction of train-induced vibration for a planned building to prevent annoyance and to improve the building design. 3) Modal analysis and long term measurements of several single- or multi-span, concrete or steel bridges 4) Modal and wave analysis of coupled floors in a historical building (“Neues Palais” at Potsdam). 5) Soil properties of various measurement sites (different routines to evaluate the dispersion). Moreover, from many projects, amplitudes, frequencies, and attenuation laws have been collected and analysed for the different sources such as vibratory or impact pile driving and ground compaction, demolition work with different machines, blasting in quarries and in tunnel works, bomb and mine clearing.
Monitoring of construction projects plays increasingly important role in the implementation of growing needs and requirements, especially in geologically difficult areas. This particularly concerns tunnelling and special civil engineering projects. The use of fiber optic sensors for structural health monitoring provides significant economic advantages regarding lower life-cycle costs of the civil infrastructure. We present our achievements in the development of distributed polymer optical fiber sensors based on Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering for early damage detection.
Investigating the spalling behaviour of a concrete mixture using large scale members is complex and expensive. Thus, the susceptibility of concrete to spalling is investigated by means of fire tests on small scale specimens. However, the reduction of the fire exposed surface increases the influence of boundary effects. Macrocracking and the water loss via the lateral surfaces reduce the impact of the thermomechanical and thermohydraulic damage mechanisms and therefore, lower the risk of spalling. Thus, the influence of different restraints on the spalling behaviour of intermediate scaled specimens (Ø0.47 m; h=0.29 m) was investigated for two ordinary concrete mixtures. Both mixtures had the same
composition except the type of aggregate. One mixture contained only quartzitic aggregates, whereas the other mixture was made with basalt grit as coarse aggregates. Applied steel rings restrained the thermal expansion of the specimen and prevented the loss of water, whereas applied steel sheet primarily reduced the loss of water during the fire test. Additionally, the fire exposed surface of one specimen of each mixture was pre-dried under controlled climate conditions and fire tested with applied steel rings. The results show a higher spalling volume for the ring restrained specimens compared to the other covering types. Further, the pre-dried boundary zone leads to delayed and decreased occurrence of spalling compared to the non-dried specimens for the concrete with quartzitic aggregates and to a prevention of spalling for the mixture with basalt aggregates. Additionally, the results show that the influence of the thermomechanical behaviour of the coarse aggregates increases with increasing restraint. The restrained conditions of the specimens with applied steel ring are comparable to the conditions in the centre of a large scale member. This test series is a further step for possible concept of steel ring restraint concrete specimens as “screening-tests” in upcoming projects.
In addition to already established structural monitoring methods such as deformation, inclination or strain gauges or acoustic emission sensors, sonic or ultrasonic monitoring might provide valuable information about the condition or alteration of a structure. Sensors such as geophones, recording ambient noise in the sonic and subsonic frequency range can provide information beyond modal analysis by using interferometric methods. Wave velocities determined by this method are related to the elastic properties and stiffness of material and structure and can be converted into damage indicators. Embedded active ultrasonic transducer networks can provide more detailed insight about deterioration or damages again, using interferometric technologies. This approach is extremely sensible, detecting relative change in velocity on down to 10-5. These methods, including benefits and remaining challenges, are demonstrated using data from a test structure at BAM’s test site demonstrating the case of prestress loss, and data from an actual bridge still under traffic.
Existing concrete structures were usually designed for lifetimes of several decades. The current and urgently required efforts to increase sustainability and protect the environment will likely result in extended service lives up to 100 years. To achieve such objectives, it is required to assess structures over their entire lifecycles. Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods can reliably support the assessment of existing structures during the construction, operational, and decommissioning phases. One of the most important and safety-relevant components of a prestressed concrete structure are the tendons. NDT methods such as the ultrasonic echo method are suitable for both the detection and the localization of the tendons, i.e., the measurement of their geometrical position inside the component. The uniqueness of structures, concrete heterogeneity, and varying amounts of secondary components such as the reinforcement represent obstacles in the application of these methods in practice. The aim of this contribution is to demonstrate a practicable procedure, that can be used in the field to determine the parameters required for the measuring data analysis without extensive knowledge about the investigated components. For this purpose, a polyamide reference specimen is used to show which steps are required to obtain reliable imaging information on the position of tendons from the measurement data. The procedure is then demonstrated on a concrete test specimen that covers various relevant and practice-oriented test scenarios, such as varying tendon depths and component thicknesses.
Approaches to the development of a (GUM-) measurement model for the calculation of measurement uncertainties in the localization of tendons in concrete structures using the ultrasonic echo method including demonstration were presented.

Galvanic corrosion protection by embedded zinc anodes is an accepted technique for the corrosion protection of reinforcing steel in concrete. Galvanic currents flow between the zinc anode and the steel reinforcement due to the potential difference that is in the range of a few hundred mV. The ion distribution was studied on two steel reinforced concrete specimens admixed with 3 wt.% chloride/wt. cement and galvanically protected by a surface applied EZ-anode. On both specimens, a zinc anode was embedded and glued to the concrete surface by a geo-polymer-based chloride-free binder. At one specimen, the EZ-anode was operated for 2,5 years, the EZ-anode at the other specimen was not electrically connected to the reinforcement, this specimen serves as a reference. Both specimens have been stored under identical conditions. The ion distribution between the anode (EZ-anode) and cathode (steel reinforcement) was studied by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) after 7 months, 12 months, and 2,5 years. Results of the LIBS studies on the specimen with activated EZ-anode after 7 months, 12 months, and 2,5 years and of the reference specimen after 2,5 years are reported. Results show that diffusion of ions contributes to the changes in the ion distribution but migration, especially of chlorides towards the EZ-anode is significant despite the weak electric field – several hundred millivolts - generated by the galvanic current. Results show that chloride ions accumulate near the zinc-anode as in water-insoluble zinc-hydroxy chlorides - Simonkolleit.
Due to the high damping mechanical properties of fibreboard materials, corrugated fibreboard boxes are widely used as transport packages of dangerous goods.
Since there is a hazard of vertical impact within the distribution system, drop tests are performed as design type tests to assess the package’s ability to withstand damage. However, there is little information in this context regarding the mechanical response of a filled fibreboard box.
This work aims to propose a concept utilizing experimental drop test results by means of finite-element (FE) analyses in order to predict the damage resistance of complete, filled corrugated fibreboard boxes which are ready for transportation.

Geophysical methods are able to contribute significantly to geotechnical site characterization. In-situ parameters are collected and gaps between boreholes or other direct tests are filled with information. However the limited resolution has to be considered and the indirect geophysical parameters have to be translated into something geotechnically useful. Moreover, the limitations have to be evaluated when including geophysical data into geostatistical models. If done properly, the use of geophysics will help in an efficient and effective site characterization. A comprehensive overview on existing geophysical (mostly seismic) methods is given as well as information on the calibration of geophysical against geotechnical parameters, pitfalls and limitations and some hints how to include these data into geostatistical/geotechnical models.
This talk reports the findings of the WIPANO "Knowledge and Technology Transfer via Patents and Standards" research project "Safety of Prestressing Steels," founded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). A new test method for assessing the susceptibility of prestressing steels to hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is presented, which serves the demands of a lower scattering compared with the present standard. Moreover, the ability to differentiate between high susceptible and low susceptible prestressed wires is possible, modifying the method by hydrogen charging and surface preparation.
This study aims to develop a real-time monitoring method for the structural performance by ultrasonic testing in combination with six-component (6-C) translation and rotation measurements. So far, the recordings of the velocity and acceleration response in the translation direction have been used to obtain the eigenfrequencies of structures. Recently, measurement of rotation has been used to fully characterize the dynamic behavior of structures. In this research, 6-C sensors consisting of a three-component rotational seismometer and a three-component broadband seismometer are evaluated for their suitability for bridge monitoring. Since changes in environmental conditions such as temperature during vibration recordings affect the structural evaluation results, cross-correlation function is applied here to the 6-C ambient vibration signals to reconstruct the wave propagation on the one hand, and coda wave interferometry (CWI) is applied to obtain the internal velocity variation from waveforms on the other hand. In field tests on a large-scale prestressed concrete bridge model, it was verified whether the prestress loss can also be determined in presence of temperature effects. For this purpose, measurements were performed in two scales, ultrasonic and output-only vibration measurements. The change in structural properties due to the prestress loss should be detected by the pulse velocity change. The results demonstrate both the performance and advantages of ultrasonic techniques and the capabilities of 6-C sensors. Thus, the application of CWI to wave signals can contribute comprehensively to bridge monitoring.
Introduction of a monitoring system for Bingham fluids in additive manufacturing with concrete
(2022)
Freeform additive manufacturing of concrete structures is a rising technology in civil engineering with several fascinating advantages. Nonetheless, to ensure reliability and structural integrity, standards and quality control are required in the future to bring this technology into the market. As the concrete is manufactured continuously, continuous quality control of the printing process is also required, i.e. comprehensive process monitoring. At BAM, a test rig will be installed, enabling the printing of concrete structures with a maximum size of 2 m x 1 m x 1 m (l x w x h). Here, process monitoring is the focus of the test rig. In this study, we show the results of the first pump tests, including the measurement of several parameters such as temperature and pressure along the supply system, i.e. from the concrete pump to the printer head.
This contribution introduces an investigation of a large-scale prestressed concrete bridge model (“BLEIB” structure at the BAM-TTS open air test site) by means of on-site cooperative measurements. This bridge has an external post-tensioning system and has been instrumented with the ultrasonic transducers, temperature sensors and optical fibers for Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). Our experiment was designed to test the suitability of the novel 6C sensors developed within the framework of the GIOTTO project – the IMU50. The IMU50 sensor enables vibration measurements in translation along three axes and rotation around three axes. The geophone sensors were considered for complementary measurements of vertical velocity response. In the experiment, several perturbations were achieved by controlling the external influence factors such as loading and prestressing changes. The aim of the integrated measurement strategy was to fully observe the results of the condition change and to verify the effectiveness of multiple sensors for bridge monitoring.
Significant Cu-deposition and ‑precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. High-alloyed materials prevent the disturbing Cu-agglomeration. Pb-deposition and ‑precipitation only occurred in combination with carbon steel. No negative Pb-effect could be observed in combination with high-alloyed steels. High alloyed corrosion resistant alloys are suitable and shall be chosen for future design of the piping system, either in massive or in cladded form, if formation of crevices with non-metallic materials can be excluded!
To reveal the corrosion resistance of casing steel/mortar interface in CO2 injection condition, sandwich samples were prepared and exposed up to 20 weeks in aquifer fluid under 10 MPa and 60 °C.
Cross section analysis revealed the crevice corrosion as main mechanism instead of pitting corrosion despite very high concentration of Cl in NGB.
EDS element line scan analysis of the 20-week-exposed metal/mortar coupon showed Chloride distribution, which still not reached the metal/mortar interface, explaining no pitting was observed.
It was confirmed that FeCO3 cannot protect the steel surface in CO2 saturated NGB.
To verify the protective possibility of passivation happened on casing steel/mortar interface, simulated pore solution was synthesized and used to passivate the steel for 42 days. OCP and EIS confirmed the formation of passive layer.
The 42 day passivated layer was broken during the first minute of exposure in CO2 saturated NGB.
However, due to high concentration of Ca2+, a new carbonate CaCO3 dense layer was formed, increased the corrosion resistance of steel surface.
In the course of the deconstruction of the "Bridge of the 20th anniversary of the GDR" at the Altstädter Bahnhof in Brandenburg a. d. Havel, new information on the initiation of hydrogen-induced stress cracks was obtained. BAM was commissioned by the Brandenburg State Road Administration to participate in a corresponding joint project which is financed by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. The added value of the new information gained in this project goes beyond the specific structure. It describes unexpected new damage patterns that can be transferred to other structures with concentrated tendons (tendon block method and Baur-Leonhardt method) and were previously unknown in this form. These should be made known to other developers to enable them to initiate any necessary actions.
Due to the high corrosivity that are present in road tunnel structures, cleaning and maintenance work on stainless steel components in the tunnels is carried out at regular intervals in the tunnels, which means that parts of the lanes or the whole tunnel have to be temporarily closed. To reduce these traffic disruptions and maintenance costs, it is important to reduce the work that is needed for cleaning and maintenance of stainless steel components in road tunnels. One possibility is the identification and utilization of better suited alternatives to the commonly used austenitic stainless steels AISI 316L and AISI 316Ti. Thus, a field exposure study was carried out in different road tunnels throughout Germany to qualify different duplex and lean duplex stainless steels for tunnel constructions.
The proposed scientific poster gives an overview of results after the first three years of exposure in three different road tunnels. Samples of different stainless steels were placed in different areas of the tunnel – at lane height and at the ceiling. Some samples were exposed under sheltered conditions. Pit depths were evaluated on the free surface and in crevice areas after each year of exposure. The investigations show that duplex stainless steels have a comparable or even better corrosion resistance than austenitic steels in tunnel atmospheres.
Recently, non-destructive testing in civil engineering (NDT-CE), in particular of concrete components, has successfully mastered the leap from research to practice. Several methods have been established for field inspections to determine the concrete cover of reinforcement or to estimate the compressive strength as well as other parameters related to the concrete material. In addition, the application of non-destructive testing is indispensable, if information about the inner structure - such as the location of rebars and tendon ducts or the damage-related condition assessment to detect grouting defects, honeycombs, delamination, or corrosion - is required. Besides the selection of a suitable NDT method and an appropriate inspection system, the reliability of the results depends largely on the person who applies the non-destructive inspection technique and evaluates the inspection results. To ensure a high quality of non-destructive concrete evaluation as well as to keep the uncertainty caused by the inspection personnel to a minimum, structured, consistent, and regulated theoretical as well as practical training of inspection personnel is essential. To close this gap, the subcommittee of education and training (UA-A) within the committee for NDT-CE of the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP) has been reactivated in 2018 to establish uniform training standards for non-destructive concrete inspections in the long term. The subcommittee consists of scientists, practitioners, authorities, and clients. So far, the national standard DIN 4871 “Non-destructive testing - Qualification of NDT personnel in Civil Engineering (NDT-CE)” was developed. This standard considers the civil-industry-specifics, for example, that standards for NDT of concrete, as well as related product standards with a few exceptions, still do not exist at the moment. Within this presentation, the concept, the connection to ISO 9712 and other standards as well as an overview of the recently developed German standard DIN 4871 will be presented.
Potential Mapping - What could we measure and what should we able to detect – guideline B03 of DGZfP
(2022)
“Electrochemical potential mapping according to guideline B3 of DGZfP (German Society for Non-Destructive Testing) is a recognized technique for the localization of corroding reinforcing steels.
Areas of corroding reinforcement steel can be located in a non-destructive manner by means of this procedure. Half‐cell potential measurements are used in order to detect chloride‐induced corrosion. However, it is not recommended in order to assess the risk of carbonation‐induced corrosion. For this purpose, determining the carbonation depth and the concrete cover appears more appropriate. The content of this specification exclusively refers to the application of mobile, local variable reference electrodes, which are only placed on the concrete surface while measuring. The technique distinguishes itself thereby from the range of corrosion monitoring systems with stationary installed reference electrodes and sensor systems, respectively, whereby it is possible to continuously track measurements within the area of the installed electrodes. However, these methods are not dealt with in this specification.”
Structural health monitoring (SHM) intends to improve the management of engineering structures. The number of successful SHM projects – especially SHM research projects – is ever growing, yielding added value and more scientific insight into the management of infrastructure asset. With the advent of the data age, the value of accessible data becomes increasingly evident. In SHM, many new data-centric methods are currently being developed at a high pace. A consequent application of research data management (RDM) concepts in SHM projects enables a systematic management of raw and processed data, and thus facilitates the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods to the SHM data. In this contribution, a case study based on an institutional RDM framework is presented. Data and metadata from monitoring the structural health of the Maintalbrücke Gemünden for a period of 16 months are managed with the RDM system BAM Data Store, which makes use of the openBIS data management software. An ML procedure is used to classify the data. Feature engineering, feature training and resulting data
are performed and modelled in the RDM system.
The contribution discusses the processing and analysis of data generated on two different ways of investigations for impact damage in reinforced concrete structures. Damage investigations are essential to determine type and characteristics of damage and thus the residual capacity. Damage describing data is generated using two different types of investigation, a non-destructive tomographic as well as numerical examination. Subsequently, data of both sources was merged and analysed. Within the research project “Behaviour of structural components during impact load conditions caused by aircraft fuel tank collision” reinforces concrete plates were damaged by impact loading, see Hering (2020). Afterwards the damaged specimens were investigated tomographically as well as numerically using several methods and models. Aim of the presented research work was to specify an objective comparability of numerical data with experimentally determined damage patterns and based on this, to establish a quantitative damage evaluation.
The ‘G¨anstorbr¨ucke’ bridge between the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm is one of the best-monitored bridges all over Germany. In addition to an already active bride monitoring system, we have equipped the bridge with 30 ultrasonic transducers to explore the monitoring possibilities at an in-service large-scale reinforced concrete structure with continuous active ultrasonic measurements. The monitoring system is based on the detection of small changes in the entire signal, especially the multiply scattered parts of the recording, the so-called coda. Applying Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI), subtle changes in the signal can be detected and related to changing velocities in the area between source and receiver. A comparison of the results from coda wave interferometry with the strain measurements of the permanent monitoring system shows a correlation between strain measurements and CWI results. We discuss the challenges of changing environmental conditions, pose for interpretation of the results, and highlight the advantages of embedded versus externally attached ultrasonic transducers in permanent bridge monitoring, especially when coda wave interferometry is applied.
Concrete has a long history in the construction industry and is currently one of the most widely used building materials. Especially precast concrete elements are frequently utilized in construction projects for standardized applications, increasing the quality of the composite material, as well as reducing the required building time. Despite the accumulated knowledge, continuous research and development in this field is essential due to the complexity of the composite combined with the ever-growing number of applications and requirements. Especially in view of global climate change, design aspects as CO2 emissions and resource efficiency require new mix designs and optimization strategies. A result of the material’s high complexity and heterogeneity on multiple scales is that utilizing the full potential with changing demands is highly challenging, even for the established industry. We propose a framework based on an ontology, which automatically combines experimental data with numerical simulations. This not only simplifies experimental knowledge transfer, but allows the model calibration and the resulting simulation predictions to be reproducible and interpretable. This research shows a way towards a more performance oriented material design. Within this talk we present our workflow for an automated simulation of a precast element, demonstrating the interaction of the ontology and the finite element simulation. We show the automatic calibration of our early-age concrete model [1, 2], to improve the prediction of the optimal time for the removal of the form work.
Investigation of temperature effects on ultrasonic velocity in a prestressed concrete bridge model
(2022)
Ultrasonic measurements have recently been applied in the context
of structural health monitoring in civil engineering. The ultrasonic method is very sensitive to environmental conditions and material property changes, which might be caused by prestress losses and loading effects on the bridge. However, it remains a challenge to identify the damage mechanisms causing structural property changes from the above-mentioned factors influencing ultrasonics. The focus of this contribution is to investigate the correlation between ultrasonic velocities and temperature by the coda wave interferometry (CWI) analysis. Long-term monitoring of a prestressed concrete bridge model under field conditions was carried out to observe the effect of temperature. The homogeneous change in concrete caused
by temperature was revealed by applying the CWI method. The threshold value of the best correlation coefficients for the linear regression of temperature and ultrasonic velocity changes was also studied. Experimental assessment will provide a ratio for temperature correction to evaluate the prestressing force decrease and its consequences on crack opening or extension.

The attenuation of wave amplitudes is ruled by the planar, cylindrical or spher-ical geometry of the wave front (the geometric or power-law attenuation) but also by the damping of the soil (an exponential attenuation). Several low- and high-frequency filter effects are derived for the layering and the damping of the soil, for the moving static and the distributed train loads and for a homoge-neous or randomly heterogeneous soil. Measurements of hammer- and train-induced vibrations at five sites have been analysed for these attenuation and filter effects. The measured attenuation with distance can be discribed by gen-eralised power laws and some reasons will be discussed. The theoretical filter effects can well be found in the measurements.
A few layer/multilayer graphene (MLG) with a specific surface area of BET=250 m2/g is proposed as an efficient multifunctional nanofiller for rubbers. The preparation method, i.e., ultrasonically-assisted solution mixing of master batches followed by two-roll milling, strongly influences the dispersion in the elastomeric matrix and is fundamental for the final properties. When homogenously dispersed, single stacks of only approximately 10 graphene sheets, with an aspect ratio of 34, work at low loadings, enabling the replacement of large amounts of carbon black (CB), an increase in efficiency, and a reduction in filler load. The appropriate preparation yielded nanocomposites in which just 3 phr are sufficient to significantly improve the rheological, curing, gas barrier properties, electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as mechanical properties of different rubbers, as shown for chlorine-Isobutylene-Isoprene rubber (CIIR), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), natural rubber (NR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). 3 phr of MLG tripled the Young’s modulus of CIIR, an effect equivalent to 20 phr of CB. The stronger interactions between MLG and NR or SBR also resulted in a reduction in the elongation at break by 20% and 50%, respectively, while the same parameter was hardly changed for CIIR/MLG and NBR/MLG. CIIR/MLG and NBR/MLG were stiffer but just as defomable than CIIR and NBR. The strong reinforcing effect of 3 phr MLG was confirmed by the increase of greater than 10 Shore A in hardness. MLG reduces gas permeability, increases thermal and electrical conductivities, and retards flammability, the latter shown by the reduction in heat release rate in the cone calorimeter. We investigated MLG also as a synergist for reducing the aluminium trihydrate loading in flame retardant hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene (HNBR), polybutadiene chloroprene (BR/CR), and chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber(CSM). The higher the nanofiller concentration is, the greater the improvement in the properties. For instance, the permeability decreased by 30% at 3 phr of MLG, 50% at 5 phr and 60% at 10 phr, respectively. Moreover, the MLG nanocomposites improve stability of mechanical properties against the effects of weathering. In key experiments an increase in UV-absorption and a pronounced radical scavenging were proved as stabilizing mechanisms. In a nutshell, MLG is an efficient multifunctional nanofiller ready to be used for innovative rubber development.

The mechanical and geometrical properties of impact targets greatly influence the outcome of a drop test. The International Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) as well as ISO 2248 describe the characteristics of impact targets for drop tests of dangerous goods packagings.
According to these regulations, the impact target’s surface needs to be unyielding, under testing conditions non-deformable, flat, and integral with a mass at least 50 times that of the heaviest packaging to be tested. The problem is that many production facilities, especially manufacturers of corrugated fibreboard boxes, do not have their own testing device with the required 50 times mass ratio of the impact target for a regulation compliant drop test during series production. Furthermore, at UN level it is considered necessary to revise these requirements.
In the present paper, the impact target requirements are examined in detail and compared with those in other technical areas (e.g., impact target for container for the transport of radioactive materials). A research method is being developed to investigate the dependency between the mass ratio of the packaging and the target as well as the damage resistance of a drop tested package in relation to specific design characteristics. The results are of high relevance for industry purposes and intended to ensure a uniform level of safety assessment for the mechanical testing of dangerous goods packagings.
Multiscale modeling of heterogeneous structures based on a localized model order reduction approach
(2022)
Many of today’s problems in engineering demand reliable and accurate prediction of failure mechanisms of mechanical structures. Herein, it is necessary to take into account the heterogeneous structure on the lower scale, to capture the underlying physical phenomena. However, this poses a great challenge to the numerical solution as the computational cost is significantly increased by resolving the lower scale in the model. Moreover, in applications where scale separation as the basis of classical homogenization schemes does not hold, the influence of the lower scale on the upper scale has to be modelled directly. This work aims to develop an efficient concurrent methodology to model heterogeneous structures combining the variational multiscale method (VMM) [1] and model order reduction techniques (e. g. [2]). First, the influence of the lower scale on the upper scale can be taken into account following the additive split of the displacement field as in the VMM. Here, also a decomposition of the global domain into subdomains, each containing a fine grid discretization of the lower scale, is introduced. Second, reduced approximation spaces for the upper and lower scale solution are constructed by exploring possible solutions for each subdomain based on a representative unit cell. The local reduced spaces are designed such that local contributions of each subdomain can be coupled in a conforming way. Thus, the resulting global system is sparse and reduced in size compared to the direct numerical simulation, leading to a faster solution of the problem. There is a rising attention of using numerical models for effcient structural monitoring and ensuring the structure's safety. Setting up virtual models as twin for real structures requires a model identification process calculating the unknown model parameters, which mostly are only indirectly measurable. This is a computationally very costly inverse optimization process, which often makes it unfeasible for real applications. Effcient surrogate models such as reduced order models can be used, to overcome this limitation. But the influence of the model accuracy on the identification process has then to be considered. The aim is to automatically control the influence of the model's accuracy on the identification. Here, a variational Bayesian inference approach[3] is coupled with a reduced forward model using the Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) method. The influence of the model accuracy on the inference result is studied and measured. Therefore, besides the commonly used Bayes factor the Kullback-Leibler divergences between the predicted posterior pdfs are proposed. In an adaptive inference procedure, the surrogate's accuracy is iteratively increased, and the convergence of the posterior pdf is analysed. The proposed adaptive identification process is applied to the identification of spatially distributed damage modeled by a random eld for a simple example with synthetic data as well as a small, reinforced bridge with real measurement data. It is shown that the proposed criteria can mirror the influence of the model accuracy and can be used to automatically select a suffciently accurate surrogate model.
PGD model with domain mapping of Bead-on-Plate weld simulation for wire arc additive manufacturing
(2022)
Numerical simulations are essential in predicting the behavior of systems in many engineering fields and industrial sectors. The development of accurate virtual representations of actual physical products or processes allows huge savings in cost and resources. In fact, digital twins would allow reducing the number of real, physical prototypes, tests, and experiments, thus also increasing the sustainability of the production processes and products’ lifetime. Standard numerical methods fail in providing real time simulations, especially for complex processes such as additive manufacturing applications.
This work aims to build up a reduced order model for efficient wire arc additive manufacturing simulations by using the proper generalized decomposition (PGD) [1,2] method. Model order reduction is a popular concept to decrease the computational effort, where each evaluation of the reduced forward model is faster than evaluations using classical methods, even for complex models. The simulation of a moving heat source leads to a hardly separable parametric problem, which is solved by a new mapping approach [3]. Using this procedure, it is possible to create a simple separated representation of the forward model.
In this contribution, a PGD model is derived for the first part of wire arc additive manufacturing: bead-on-plate weld. An excellent agreement with a standard finite element method is shown. The reduced model is further used in a model calibration set up, speeding up calibrations and ultimately leading to an optimized real-time simulation.
