Comprehensive Characterization of APTES Surface Modifications of Hydrous Boehmite Nanoparticles
(2020)
Hydrous boehmite (γ-AlOOH) nanoparticles (BNP) show great potential as nanoscale filler for the fabrication of fiber reinforced nanocomposite materials. Notably, the particle−matrix interaction has been demonstrated to be decisive for improving the matrix-dominant mechanical properties in the past years. Tailoring the surface properties of the nanofiller enables to selectively design the interaction and thus to exploit the benefits of the nanocomposite in an optimal way. Here, an extensive study is presented on the binding of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), a common silane surface modifier, on BNP in correlation to different process parameters (concentration, time, temperature, and pH). Furthermore, a comprehensive characterization of the modified BNP was performed by using elemental analysis (EA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), and Kaiser’s test (KT). The results show an increasing monolayer formation up to a complete surface coverage with rising APTES concentration, time, and temperature, resulting in a maximal grafting density of 1.3 molecules/nm². Unspecific multilayer formation was solely observed under acidic conditions. Comparison of TGA-MS results with data recorded from EA, TGA, and KT verified that TGA-MS is a convenient and highly suitable method to elucidate the ligand binding in detail.
Small-angle scattering data from particle dispersions with narrow size distributions are usually analysed by fitting a model function to the data, which is composed of a monodisperse form factor with a size distribution and, optionally, a structure factor. For common particle shapes like solid spheres, core-shell particles, ellipsoids or rods, the form factor can be computed analytically, and several software packages are readily available which provide a compilation of form factors.1,2 Recently, highly monodisperse nanoparticles with a variety of shapes have been synthesized, e.g. cubes and bipyramids3,4 with lightly capped edges, for which analytic form factors are harder to derive.
We compute an approximation to the scattering curve of arbitrary shapes by filling the shape with a quasi-random distribution of point scatterers and using Debye’s formula to get the overall scattering curve. The highly optimized debyer code is used to perform an efficient evaluation of Debye’s formula,5 which can perform the evaluation of 500,000 point scatterers in two minutes on commodity hardware. Moderate polydispersity is handled by interpolating the computed scattering curve over q from a master curve. In this way, the code is fast enough to perform data fitting of particle ensembles with moderate polydispersity for arbitrary shapes to experimental data.

Conclusions and perspectives
(2020)
This chapter briefly summarizes the methods selected within this book for the characterization of nanoparticles with regard to commonly accessible properties: nanoparticle size and size distribution, shape, surface area, surface charge, aggregation state, structure, chemical composition, surface chemistry, and nanoparticle number concentration. Current progress of measurement and analysis, as far as possible according to standard operation procedures, has been the focus of this work. A number of new and less commonly used methods have not been covered, and we outline some of these in this chapter. Future challenges such as automated measurement and analysis, read-across approaches for the prediction of properties, knowledge of measurement uncertainties, the need for certified reference materials, and the necessity to complement measurements methods to obtain more reliable results are covered, and the unmet measurement requirements for real-world nanoparticles are described.
The image designed by Natalia Cano Murillo and colleagues shows the cross section of a ternary composite (boehmite/polycarbonate/epoxy, 80μm x 80μm). The surface was measured by AFM kelvin probe microscopy, yielding the surface potential which is shown as 3D‐surface and contour lines. The sample was further subjected to AFM force spectroscopy with a lateral resolution of 1μm², yielding the local Young's modulus, projected in false colors on the 3D surface. The ternary system, containing boehmite nanoparticles, shows a broad distribution of modulus, desirable for optimized macroscopic mechanical properties, such as high stiffness as well as toughness.
Dataset and Jupyter worksheet interpreting the (results from) small- and wide-angle scattering data from a series of boehmite/epoxy nanocomposites. Accompanies the publication "Competition of nanoparticle-induced mobilization and immobilization effects on segmental dynamics of an epoxy-based nanocomposite", by Paulina Szymoniak, Brian R. Pauw, Xintong Qu, and Andreas Schönhals.
Datasets are in three-column ascii (processed and azimuthally averaged data) from a Xenocs NanoInXider SW instrument. Monte-Carlo analyses were performed using McSAS 1.3.1, other analyses are in the Python 3.7 worksheet. Graphics and result tables are output by the worksheet.
Thermal decomposition of (NH4)2[OsxPt1-xCl6] as single-source precursors for Os-Pt binary alloys has been investigated under ambient and high pressure up to 40 GPa. Thermal decomposition of mixed-metal (NH4)2[OsxPt1-xCl6] precursor in hydrogen atmosphere (reductive environment) under ambient pressure results in formation of β-trans[Pt(NH3)2Cl2] and α-trans-[Pt(NH3)2Cl2] crystalline intermediates as well as single and twophase Os—Pt binary alloys. For the first time, direct thermal decomposition of coordination compound under pressure has been investigated. A formation of pure metallic alloys from single-source precursors under pressure has been shown. Miscibility between fcc- and hcpstructured alloys has been probed up to 50 GPa by in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction. Miscibility gap between fcc- and hcp-structured alloys does not change its positions with pressure up to at least 50 GPa.
Decolorization of Acid Orange 142 (AO142) as important water pollutant was observed on the exposure of the dye solutions to an atmospheric non-thermal gas plasma. Aresponse Surface methodology (RSM) combined with a central composite design (CCD) was utilized to optimize the main factors (variables) affecting the degradation efficiency (response) of AO142, such as the applied voltage, the gap distance between the high voltage electrode and the surface of the solution. The regression analysis showed that a first-order polynomial model well fits the experimental data with a coefficient of determination R2=0.96. FT-IR, UV-vis,TOCand GC-MS measurements were used to investigate the decolorization of the dye on exposure to the plasma discharges. A possible Degradation pathway was postulated. Additionally, the conductivity and pH changes during the treatment were also evaluated. The plasma treatment combined with Fe2+ (plasma Fenton reaction) exhibited a higher degradation efficiency, higher energy yield connected with lower energy consumption in comparison to the plasma treatment without Fe2+ addition.
Most real core-shell nanoparticle (CSNP) samples deviate from an ideal core-shell structure potentially having significant impact on the particle properties. An ideal structure displays a spherical core fully encapsulated by a shell of homogeneous thickness, and all particles in the sample exhibit the same shell thickness. Therefore,
analytical techniques are required that can identify and characterize such deviations.
This study demonstrates that by analysis of the inelastic background in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) survey spectra, the following types of deviations can be identified and quantified: the nonuniformity of the shell thickness within a nanoparticle sample and the incomplete encapsulation of the cores by the shell material. Furthermore, CSNP shell thicknesses and relative coverages can be obtained. These results allow for a quick and straightforward comparison between several batches of a specific CSNP, different coating approaches, and so forth. The presented XPS methodology requires a submonolayer distribution of CSNPs on a substrate.
Poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-polystyrene polymer CSNPs serve as model systems to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.
