The change from organic-solvent-based products, emitting VOCs, to water-based ones resulted in new challenges regarding the control of microbial contamination and growth. It also allows to maintain important product properties (e.g. viscosity, colour, pH). To protect water-solved paints against microbial attack biocides are often added. Interior wall paints labelled with the “Blue Angel” must contain only those substances as preservatives that are listed in annex 1 of the document “RAL-UZ 102 Basic criteria”. The amounts of preservatives indicated there must not be exceeded and the preservation of the wall paint shall only be effective during its storage and transportation. In interior wall paints isothiazolinone-based biocides are the most commonly used biocides and are effective as in-can preservatives. However, these substances can cause contact dermatitis. Therefore, they must be declared on the paint container of products bearing the eco-label.
