Biological contamination of kerosene and diesel by bacteria and fungi is a particular problem in all areas with high consumption or the demand of long-term storage. It can lead to the clogging of filters or tubes and thus to severe damage of engines and turbines. To maintain the quality, safety and integrity of fuel based systems, the fuel and storage containers must be checked regularly.
Common microbiological and immunological detection methods cover only a small number of microorganisms, need a laboratory environment as well as they are time consuming or not applicable for on-site testing. “BioDetector” is a joint research project (Pro FIT ) with the aim to develop an integrated system for the rapid and sensitive on-site detection of microorganisms in fuel.
