Geocomposite drains (GCD) are used on long and steep slopes. Since they are usually composed of different components, at least a drain core in connection with a nonwoven filter geotextile, the internal shear strength is of significant relevance for the slope stability. The internal shear strength may be due to pure friction forces between the different components or due to the mechanical strength of the bonding between the components achieved in a special production process. In the latter case the interpretation of the results of friction shear box tests is quite unclear. Against this background it is shown how the pressure and shear forces, which are acceptable for a product in the long run, may be derived from such a shear box test in combination with long-term creep tests. The procedure is used within the framework of the certification of the products for landfill cover systems according to the German landfill ordinance.

An approach to achieve 'zero leakage' is discussed with respect to experience in Germany, where strict regulations for landfill lining and capping Systems have been developed and issued because of large environmental Problems related to landfills that accumulated in the 1970s and 1980s. Using a thick, high-quality high-density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane (GM) that is installed free of residual waves and wrinkles in intimate contact with a compacted clay liner or geosynthetic clay liner of very low permeability, by a qualified, experienced, well-equipped and properly third-party-controlled installer, and which is protected by heavy protection layers designed with respect to the long-term performance of the GM may result in a liner or capping system of practically no leakage. This is demonstrated by analysing results of measurements obtained from permanently installed leak-detection Systems in combination with HDPE GMs. The survey was based on 32 German landfills with 1.276.500 m² of installed GMs.
Was gibt es Neues?
Composite liners (a geomembrane in intimate contact with a mineral liner) are frequently used to line landfills and contaminated sites. It is therefore very important to characterise the behaviour of these systems even under extreme conditions.
An investigation was undertaken to determine the influence of a mixture of concentrated organic contaminants on composite liner materials taken from test cells that had been dismantled after a 12-year permeation test.
The organic hydrocarbons had permeated the HDPE-geomembrane and had then migrated or had been adsorbed within the mineral liners, depending on their properties. The obtained concentration profiles of the contaminant mixture components indicate that the various mineral layer materials have selective retardation abilities which correspond to the different parameters of the organic compounds as well as of the mineral layer.
In addition, contaminant transport in the composite liners tested was modelled and the results of the model analysis compared with measurement data. An example (acetone) illustrates the calculated spatial and temporal contaminant concentration.
The composite liners investigated exhibit a very good sealing capacity against the concentrated organic contaminants used.
Designing the performance of geogrids in reinforce soil constructions usually does not consider long-term behavior and possible failure modes of junctions between longitudinal and transverse ribs. How could behavior of junctions be included? To which extend is it necessary? On the conference Geo-Chicago 2016, Swan and Yuan presented an ultimate limit state equation for the short-term material resistance of junctions. We discuss limitations and suggest improvements to include long-term behavior of junctions. Nevertheless, the approach applies only to a specific mode of shear-tensile failure of junctions and only to strictly rigid geogrids. A new design concept presented in the same year by Jacobs on the conference GeoAmerica for the special case of the anchorage of geogrids, which reinforce capping system on long and steep slopes of landfills, tried to overcome these drawbacks. We discuss the aspects of this concept related to the long-term behavior
of junctions and the interplay between the load applied to junctions and the flexibility of longitudinal ribs. This interplay and the long-term junction strength determine the long-term behavior of geogrids.
Like all plastic products, geocomposite drains (GCD) are susceptible to creep and creep rupture. The GCD is slowly and continuously deformed under long lasting shear and pressure forces. The thickness is reduced and thereby the water flow capacity. If the in-plane deformation reaches a critical value in the course of time, shear failure might occur. Likewise, if the thickness reaches a critical value the structure of the drain core might collapse. These effects are shown using data provided by the manufacturers of four different GCD. Long-term water flow capacity and the acceptable limits of shear stress and normal stress (pressure) with respect to shear rupture and drain core stability as well as the lifetime with respect to these failure modes are determined using standard test methods. The design of long lasting geotechnical structures has to take into account these characteristics of the long-tem performance of GCD.
The behaviour of HDPE geomembranes and installation quality control in geotechnical application

The German Landfill Ordinance regulates the use of geosynthetics and other materials in the field of waste Containment Systems. It requires a certification of the geosynthetics by the BAM. The certification-guidelines define the state of the art by giving detailed requirements and specifications i the various geosynthetic products used in landfill constructions. According to the German Landfill Ordinance geosynthetic products have to fulfil their function for more than 100 years. Beyond, supported by an advisory board of landfill experts, BAM has developed installation requirements and demands on quality management for production, installation and third party control. The BAM is responsible to define tests and testing criteria for geosynthetics, to include provisions into the certification document and in addition to stipulate requirements with regard to installation procedure and quality management in Germany. All documents of the BAM such as certification guidelines, recommendations and testing specifications which are approved by the advisory board are published in German language on the website and in the Official Gazette*** of the BAM. For the certification one of the basic requirements is that the geosynthetic product is produced with well defined and well reproducible properties. Thus, a sophisticated quality management System is needed. In addition, not only production control, but also a quality assurance for the installation is necessary.

Using a thick, high quality HDPE geomembrane (GMB), which is installed free of residual waves and wrinkles in intimate contact with a compacted clay liner (CCL) or geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) of very low permeability, by a qualified, experienced, well equipped and properly third-party controlled installer and which are protected by heavy protection layers designed with respect to long-term performance of the GMB, may result in a liner or capping system of practically no leakage. This is demonstrated by analyzing results of measurements obtained from permanently installed leak detection systems in combination with HDPE GMBs. Accurate and reproducible measurement of the structure and properties of high-value nanoparticles is extremely important for their commercialization. A significant proportion of engineered nanoparticle systems consist of some form of nominally core-shell structure, whether by design or unintentionally. Often, these do not form an ideal core-shell structure, with typical deviations including polydispersity of the core or shell, uneven or incomplete shells, noncentral cores, and others. Such systems may be created with or without intent, and in either case an understanding of the conditions for formation of such particles is desirable. Precise determination of the structure, composition, size, and shell thickness of such particles can prove challenging without the use of a suitable range of characterization techniques. Here, the authors present two such polymer core-shell nanoparticle systems, consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene cores coated with a range of thicknesses of either polymethylmethacrylate or polystyrene. By consideration of surface energy, it is shown that these particles are expected to possess distinctly differing coating structures, with the polystyrene coating being incomplete. A comprehensive characterization of these systems is demonstrated, using a selection of complementary techniques including scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering, differential centrifugal sedimentation, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By combining the results provided by these techniques, it is possible to achieve superior characterization and understanding of the particle structure than could be obtained by considering results separately.
Engineered capping systems are in most cases an indispensable and often the only efficient component required by the long-term safety concept for landfills, mine tailings tips and contaminated land. In Germany the composite liner is the main component of standard landfill cappings for municipal and hazardous waste landfills and the compacted clay liner (CCL) for landfills for inert or low-contamination waste. The composite liner is a technically highly effective but very expensive system. Research and experience has given rise to concern about the proper long-term performance of a conventional single CCL as a landfill capping. Therefore, alternative capping systems are discussed and applied for landfills and for the containment of contaminated sites. This paper gives an overview on various alternative engineered cappings and suitable systems for capping reflecting the state of the art and the expert view in Germany. According to the European Council Directive on the landfill of waste an impermeable mineral layer is recommended for the surface sealing of non-hazardous landfills and a composition of artificial sealing liner and impermeable mineral layer for hazardous landfills. In both cases a drainage layer thickness of at least 0.5 m is suggested. These recommendations should be interpreted flexibly and to some extent modified in the light of the experience and results presented in this paper.
In the near future, CE-marked woven and nonwoven geotextiles, geocomposite drains and geogrids will be available on the market, whose declaration of performance will contain the qualification 'predicted service life up to 100 years' or even 'predicted service life minimum 100 years'. Manufacturer, principals and their design engineers as well as the responsible authorities will have to deal with the question, whether such products can be used on the basis of Annex 1, no. 2.1, sentence 7, cipher 1 of the German landfill ordinance (DepV) as components of landfill liner and capping systems. A comparison of the harmonized European standards hEN 13252 and 13257, on which the CE-marking of geotextiles and geotextile-related products is based, with the DepV, shows that only a few of the essential technical characteristics actually relevant for landfill constructions are considered in these standards. Therefore, additional tests based on the DepV-list of criteria and mechanisms of action are necessary for CE-marked products. Requirements on quality managements in the hEN are likewise not adequate for essential equivalence with respect to annex 1, No. 2.1, sentence 14 ff, DepV. Therefore, CE-marking is actually no proof of the fulfilment of the state of the techno logy according to the DepV and of the essential equivalence of product properties to the required properties, albeit the declaration of performance indicates a predicted service life of 100 years.
In two hydrolytic degradation studies the tensile (mechanical) and functional (thermo-mechanical) properties of a hydrolysis-stabilized shape memory poly(ester urethane) and its non-stabilized analog were investigated. Hydrolytic degradation was enforced by specimen immersion in de-ionized water at 80 °C. Significant differences in the fundamental shape memory parameters were monitored as function of aging time for the stabilized and non-stabilized polymer. This included the ability to recover strain (shape recoverability) and stress (stress recoverability) on heating after shape programming. Hydrolysis-related mechanical and functional changes were correlated with morphological ones, detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The shape memory poly(ester urethane), which was protected by a carbodiimide-based hydrolysis stabilizer, revealed significantly improved resistance towards hydrolysis with respect to various mechanical and shape memory parameters.

Geomembranes used in basal liner systems of landfills must not be damaged by the coarse gravel of the standard drainage layer. Therefore, the geomembrane must be protected against mechanical damage and strain by means of a suitable protective layer. The main requirements for this protective layer as well as the long-term durability of the mineral and geotextile components are compiled in the guideline recently released by German authorities. An overview is given on the existing types of protective layer systems with the state-of-the-art testing, the requirements and selected results of related research programs.
The German landfill ordinance regulates the use of geosynthetics, polymers and leak detection systems (LDS) in the field of landfill engineering in Germany. It governs the certification process and sets a framework for the requirements on these products. The certification guidelines of the BAM Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing turn these requirements into detailed technical specifications and associated test procedures. The present paper describes the procedure of developing certification guidelines for LDS by BAM and its advisory board. The requirements for the certification of LDS under the terms of the new German landfill ordinance with regard to operation and capability are listed and the technical criteria are described. The performance test for LDS used in connection with geomembranes is discussed in detail.
Leak detection systems (LDS) are used to control tight barriers in landfill cover systems. However, the efficiency of the installed LDS itself has to be verified in every landfill construction project. As an example the efficiency test for LDS used in connection with geomembranes is discussed in detail. The basic principles, the measuring techniques and objectives of the efficiency testing are described. The requirements for a certification of LDS under the terms of the new German landfill ordinance with regard to operation, capability and design are listed. The conditions necessary for a certification of LDS are introduced. Possible project related efficiency testing procedures with respect to the scope, time of convenience, general conditions as well as external influencing factors are discussed.
Data are reported from oven aging in air for more than 13 years (!) and from water immersion tests for 6 years at 80 °C on various high-density polyethylene geomembranes (GM) used in landfill lining. The mechanical properties and oxidative induction times (OIT) of the samples were monitored during the long-term testing. Aging behavior in hot air is different from that in hot water. During oven aging a slow, exponential decrease of OIT is observed. Even after 13.6 years there is no indication of an oxidative degradation of the mechanical properties. During immersion in water a strong reduction in OIT occurs within the first year, after which time the curve levels off. Oxidation starts when very low OIT-values are reached after about 5 years at which time the mechanical strength rapidly falls to values below the yield point. We conclude from these data that the service life of HDPE GM's is essentially determined by the slow loss of stabilizers due to migration. The oxidation starts only after the depletion of antioxidants and then quickly leads to brittleness of the sample. However, no complete oxidative deterioration has been observed to date. We estimate by the van't Hoff rule that under normal ambient conditions many centuries will have to pass before the functional mechanical properties of state-of-the-art stabilized HDPE bulk material will be reduced below acceptable limits by oxidative degradation.
Data from four samples of commercially available PET geogrids (made either of yarns or bars), which were measured by BAM or other institute, are analyzed to discuss the procedure and problems of determining the chemical reduction factor RFCH associated with a certain service life. Estimates from Arrhenius extrapolation usually have very large statistical errors. The level of confidence must therefore be specified. A reliable estimate requires data from immersion tests below the glass transition temperature of PET. To extrapolate the time of reductions for each reduction factor at such low temperatures, one has to know the functional form of the mechanical degradation curve. It is shown how the degradation curve of the tensile strength may be obtained by determining the relation between increase in concentration of carboxyl end group (CEG) and decrease in tensile strength. Therefore, experimental studies to determine the chemical reduction factor should be accompanied by the measurements of the CEG concentration and the intrinsic viscosity. Furthermore, such measurements allow a non-ambiguous determination of the molecular mass. Hydrolytic molecular degradation will proceed continuously even at 20 °C with half-life of the inverse of the CEG concentration of 40–100 y. Nevertheless, small chemical reduction factors at a lifetime of 100 y are obtained with high level of confidence for materials with low initial CEG concentration and high molecular mass. This is shown by pooling data from samples with comparable CEG concentration, molecular mass and above all comparable intrinsic relation between increase in CEG concentration and decrease in strength. Therefore, the recommendation of ISO TR 20432, Table 2, for chemical reduction factors seems to be applicable to PET geogrids with index properties well below the one specified by the technical report. Whether these index properties are actually a sufficient condition to have small chemical reduction factors even at a very long service life is still an open question. The determination of chemical reduction factor should be based on aging experiments, at least for products with index properties close to the limiting values for the following reasons. (1) Even so standards are available, results of different laboratories on absolute values of CEG concentration and number averaged molecular mass differ to a certain extent. (2) Other factors, like crystallization, affect the mechanical degradation significantly. (3) There is no universally applicable form of the mechanical degradation curve.
The German landfill ordinance includes a certification requirement for geosynthetics used in landfill liner and capping systems. The certification guidelines describe the basis for the design of geosynthetics used in landfill construction. According to the rules which are usually applied, the thickness of the filter geotextile has to be at least 30 times the characteristic opening size O90. Filter geotextiles which are often used in geocomposite drains have a mass per area of 200 g/m² and do not fulfill this requirement.
In this paper modified filter criteria for geosynthetics are presented with a particular focus on These geotextile filters in geocomposite drains.
Long-term water flow capacity of geosynthetic drains and structural stability of their drain cores
(2008)
Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) often have a sandwich-like multilayer structure, e.g. bentonite encased between two geotextile layers connected by fibers or yarns, either by needle-punching or stitch-bonding. Therefore, the internal shear strength of the GCL depends on the strength of reinforcing fiber bundles or yarns and their anchoring strength in the cover and carrier geotextiles. When used on long and steep slopes and covered with thick soil layers, the GCL is permanently exposed to a combined action of compressive and shear stress. Such load conditions are characteristic for landfill covers and the slope stability of the overall cover system in the long run strongly depends on the long-term internal shear strength of the GCL. A new test method was developed to study this long-term shear behavior. The focus was not only on creep, as it is normally done, but on aging effects. The shear test devices allow the measurement of creep curves and times-to-failure at elevated temperatures in different media (tap water and de-ionized water). In this publication, the main findings of the experiments on needle-punched GCLs with and without thermal treatment are summarized. Tap water as a test medium was essential to ensure sodium to calcium ion exchange in the bentonite layer. Under this condition extremely long test durations without failure were achieved. Sliding failure occurred when de-ionized water was used. Two failure modes were observed: brittle failure of the GCLs with thermal treatment and slow disentanglement of fiber bundles for untreated GCLs. Short-term shear strength (e.g. peel strength) is unrelated to the actual long-term shear strength, i.e. to the times-to-failure achieved in long-term shear strength test. Hence, short-term shear strength alone will not provide reliable dimensioning data for product design and choice of resins. Therefore, the often suggested approach, namely, restriction to short-term tests only and application of factors of safety, is challenged by these results.
Geogrids, which are installed to prevent sliding failure on long and steep slopes, have to be safely anchored. The design and calculation of the anchorage is based on simple design rules. Basically, it is assumed that the pull-out resistance is proportional to the soil shear strength, the vertical load and the anchoring length and that the soil-reinforcement coefficient of proportionality as determined in pull-out tests is typically in the range between 0.5 and 1. Based on an extended version of a model for the soil-geogrid interaction, which was described by Ziegler and Timmers (2004) and Sieira et al. (2009), the physical assumptions and limitations of these rules are discussed. For those geogrids, for which the passive thrust mobilization of earth pressure by the displacement of the transversal or bearing force grid elements substantially contributes to the pull-out resistance, the mechanical strength of the junction between longitudinal and transversal elements is of crucial importance. The relation between mechanical properties of the junction, the flexibility of the longitudinal grid elements, the surface friction and the finally achieved pull-out resistance is exemplarily shown by a model calculation. It is included, that due to aging and creep the short-term junction strength may be significantly lower than the long-term strength. There is a certain critical pull-out resistance and an associated critical anchorage length. Both are determined by the strength of the junction embedded into the soil and are independent from the actually installed anchorage length. For a safe design it is not allowed to go beyond that limit. This requirement restricts the range of application of the common design rules. It follows that not only the long-term strength of the longitudinal elements has to be considered and quantified by reduction factors but also the long-term strength of junctions. These limitations have to be observed to achieve a safe design of the anchorage. Preliminary design rules are discussed.
To properly understand and assess the long-term behaviour of geosynthetic materials it is necessary to investigate the various types of possible degradation mechanims. This includes both chemical and mechanical behaviour, and sometimes even their interactions with one another. Clearly, chemical degradation of geosynthetics depends on the polymer type. For example, polyolefins are vulnerable to oxidation; polyesters are susceptible to hydrolysis; and plasticizers can leach from polyvinyl chloride. This paper describes the concept of these three types of degradation, but focuses on the oxidation of polyolefins since the majority of the geosynthetics is made from this type of polymer. The methods used to predict the lifetime of antioxidants and service life of the geosynthetic material will be illustrated. Furthermore, the influence of temperature, pressure, and ultraviolet light on the service life are also demonstrated. Finally, the current specifications targeting the longevity of different geosynthetics are presented.
Regarding mechanical degradation, the paper mainly focuses upon the creep deformation of geogrids and stress crack resistance (SCR) of polyethylene geomembranes and geopipe. The method to assess stress crack resistance is described, and the microscopic mechanisms that lead to such failure are explained. For creep evaluation, different acceleration tests are presented and their applicability with respect to the different types of polymers is illustrated. In addition, the long-term shear behaviour of geocomposites and geosynthetic clay liners is presented.

Hydrolytic degradation and functional stability of a segmented shape memory poly(ester urethane)
(2009)
In order to understand the effects of water and hydrolytic ageing on semi-crystalline poly(ester urethane) and its shape memory functionality, water immersion experiments at elevated temperature have been performed on a model substance and various parameters were monitored: change of the melting/crystallisation temperatures, substantial increase in crystallinity, temperature dependence of the water diffusion coefficient and solubility, hydrogen-bonding index and phase mixing by peak deconvolution of the FT-IR carbonyl region and day-to-day tensile and thermo-mechanical cyclic tensile tests. A rising fraction of freezable water agglomerates in the polymer was found for specimens cooled from the immersion temperature. The degradation process could be divided into three phases: an induction phase, a phase of continuous degradation and a phase of accelerated degradation. Shape recovery remains fairly constant during phase one and decreases slowly during phase two. The increase in crystallinity in phase two is accompanied by an increase in shape fixing ability.
The shape memory functionality of a segmented poly(ester urethane) and its hydrolytically aged specimens has been studied by cyclic thermo-mechanical measurements with an imposed strain of 100%. The shape memory effect was triggered by a melting transition in the soft segment phase. Aging was enforced by immersion in hot de-ionized water. In the course of the immersion the tensile properties (secant moduli, stress and strain at yield and break) were impaired by hydrolysis. Advanced specimen embrittlement finally led to rupture during the first thermo-mechanical cycle. This happened after 68 days of aging at 55 °C and correspondingly after 8 days at 80 °C. The residual strain after the first cycle, which was about 25%, increased significantly with aging time. Therefore, the total strain recoverability became ever smaller: aged specimens needed conditioning by at least two cycles for a full development of shape recoverability. Likewise the recovery force decreased continuously. Despite these degradation effects, it was observed that the shape fixity and the cycle-related shape recovery of appropriately conditioned specimens (number of cycles N > 2) remained on a constant high level (at round 100% and between 90% and 100%, respectively) throughout the whole aging period. These observations are discussed within the framework of a simplified model of the behavior of crystallizable shape memory polymers. The amorphous state of the polymer is described by the equation of the linear visco-elastic solid. As for the semi-crystalline state the material is assumed to react elastically with respect to deviations from the configuration, which was frozen up under constraint conditions. The curves of the dependence of the material behavior on aging time at 55 °C match perfectly those at 80 °C when the time axis is adjusted by a factor of 8.5, from which the apparent activation energy for hydrolytic aging in the amorphous state of 82 kJ mol-1 could be deduced.
Geosynthetics are planar polymeric products, which are used in connection with soil, rock or other soil-like materials to fulfill various functions in geoenvironmental engineering. Geosynthetics are of ever-growing importance in the construction industry. Sealing of waste storage facilities to safely prevent the emission of wastewater, landfill gas and contaminated dust as well as the diffusion of pollutants into the environment and coastal protection against storms and floods and reconstruction after natural disaster are important fields of application. We will give an overview of the various geosynthetic products. Two examples of the material problems related to geosynthetics are discussed in detail: the effect of creep on the long-term performance of geocomposite drains and the numerical simulation of the interaction of soil with geogrids. Both issues are of importance for the use of these products in landfill capping systems. The various functions, which geosynthetics may fulfill in the protection of coastal lines, are illustrated by case studies. The geosynthetic market is evaluated and economical and environmental benefits, as well as environmental side effects related to the use of geosynthetics, are discussed.
Funktionsdauer von Kunststoff-Dränelementen für Oberflächenabdichtungen von Deponien und Altlasten

The German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) has established a testing guideline to assess the suitability of geosynthetic or geocomposite drain (GCD) elements for final landfill cover systems. In an earlier paper the uniform procedure according to the BAM guideline for determining long-term water flow capacity was described, and the structural stability of drain cores under creep was investigated. The extrapolation of creep curves is permissible only when it can be shown, over the extrapolated period (at least 100 years), that oxidative aging does not invoke any relevant changes in the polyolefin material. This can be shown by measuring antioxidant depletion and mechanical degradation of the drain cores and filter/protection geotextiles in oven aging and water immersion tests. In this paper the results of such aging studies on three different GCD products are reported. Degradation of the tensile strength of HALS-stabilized polypropylene needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles (PP NWGTs) starts right from the beginning of the oven aging. This has to be taken into account for lifetime predictions based on residual tensile strength. The rate of oxidative degradation of NWGTs decreases significantly with increasing mass per area. Therefore the expected service life sets a limit on acceptable geotextile grammage. Antioxidant depletion in the drain cores, which are made of relatively thick PP strands or HDPE ribs, is about an order of magnitude slower than in filter and protection NWGTs, which are made of thin fibers. Service life values in excess of 100 years may be obtained for the products when the geotextiles and drain cores are properly stabilized and designed.
