First results of an inter-laboratory comparison (27 participants in Europe, Japan and USA) of XPS data obtained with non-conducting samples are presented. Binding energies of Al 2s for alumina, N 1s and imide C 1s for Kapton and Sr 3p3/2 for a strontium titanate film on glass were obtained after static charge referencing with the help of 15 nm gold particles deposited at the surface of the test samples. For the alumina sample C 1s static charge referenced data are also presented. Repeat standard deviations (sr), between standard deviations (sb), reproducibility standard deviations (sR) and total means are evaluated from the experimental data. It can be stated that although the repeat standard deviation is as small as 0.05 eV in the best case, the standard deviation characterizing the reproducibility of the method is obviously not better than 0.15 eV in the best case at the present time. The knowledge of these standard deviations is important for metrology, validations of analytical procedures relying on qualitative photoelectron spectroscopy and XPS databanking.
The present Technical Report was written with the intention of fulfilling for needs: (i) for an introduction of research workers in the Technical Working Areas (TWAs) of VAMAS to modern statistical methods and techniques appropriate to improve the effectiveness of experimental research in the scope of the VAMAS co-operative projects in materials science and engineering; (ii) for illustrating the power of such approaches by giving an outline of more recent applications in science and technology; (iii) for developing a feeling on the role and importance of statistical consulting under these circumstances; and (iv) for presenting objectives and a programme to provide and promote statistical consulting within VAMAS by developing the TWA / Advisory Group “Statistical Techniques for Interlaboratory Studies and Relates Projects”.
Abstract Porous and finely dispersed certified reference materials (CRM) were certified using the gas adsorption method. The special certification procedure for IUPAC isotherm classification types I, II, and IV is presented for meso- and macroporous materials with special emphasis on specific surface area, specific pore volume and pore width according to standards DIN 66 131, 66 134, and 66 135. Four CRMs (SiO2, f-Al2O3, two transition aluminas) with a macro- and mesopore range are presented. Certification was made on the basis of BCR guidelines in connection with interlaboratory tests (altogether 38 participating laboratories, 44 various gas adsorption apparatus).
