Internal damage of an AlSi12CuMgNi alloy reinforced with planar random short fibres has been investigated after compression. This damage strongly influences the load partition between matrix and reinforcement. For fibres perpendicular to the applied load, breakage and interconnected cracks appear in significantly higher volume fraction than with fibres parallel to load.

Average phase stress concentrations in multiphase metal matrix composites under compressive loading
(2016)
We develop a model to predict average over individual phases stress concentrations in a multiphase metal matrix composite under compressive loading. The model accounts for matrix plasticity through variation of the shear modulus with applied stress and for frac- ture of filler through change in the shape of the particles. Three micromechanical models are compared –non interaction approximation, Mori–Tanaka–Benveniste (MTB) scheme, and Maxwell scheme. Comparison with the experimental measurements of Cabeza et al. (2016) shows that Maxwell scheme generally predicts the stress concentration with satis- factory accuracy. Results of MTB scheme vary depending on the loading case and ignoring of the interaction leads to substantial overestimation of the stresses.
In the present study, internal damage to an AlSi12CuMgNi alloy reinforced with planar random Al2O3 short fibres was investigated after compression testing. Due to the alloy composition, this composite contains a second reinforcement phase in the form of eutectic Si, which builds interpenetrated networks in the volume and increases the creep resistance and load-bearing capacity of the material. Materials with their fibre plane parallel and transversal to the load direction were characterized in order to investigate the dependence of load partition and damage on fibre plane orientation. In-situ compression testing during neutron diffraction measurements showed that internal damage is strongly influenced by the load partition between matrix and reinforcement. Moreover, micro-computed tomography was performed in the same material after ex-situ compression for damage analysis. In the case of a fibre plane perpendicular to the applied load, breakage and interconnected cracks appeared in a significantly higher volume fraction than with a fibre plane parallel to load.
Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technique allows to produce parts with complex geometry. Due to the rapid solidification and heat gradient during production, SLM results in presence of residual stress. The present study shows the influence of manufacturing parameters on surface residual stress of Ti-6Al-4V SLM parts. High tensile stresses in the front surface are found. Heat Treatment conditions relax residual stresses almost to zero. High scanning speed during manufacturing results in higher tensile stresses in the surface.
The reinforcement of concrete with polymer fibers provides resistance to crack formation. The orientation distribution of these fibers has a significant influence on the mechanical behavior of the material. To optimize material performance, micromechanical models that are capable of making accurate predictions of the mechanical behavior of composite materials are needed. These models must be calibrated using experimental results from microstructural characterization. For the fiber orientation distribution analysis in the present study, computed tomography (CT) data were used to evaluate the properties of a fiber-reinforced cement mortar. The results have indicated that the fibers in this material have highly anisotropic orientation characteristics and that there is a clear tendency for the polymer fibers to agglomerate during mixing and casting. The incorporation of this experimental data into micromechanical models will increase the accuracy of those models for material simulation and optimization.
The influence of the support structure on residual stress and distortion in SLM Inconel 718 parts
(2017)
The effect of support structure and of removal from the base plate on the residual stress state in Selective Laser Melted IN718 parts was studied by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The residual stresses in subsurface region of two elongated prisms in as-built condition and after the cutting from the base plate were determined. One sample was directly built on a base plate and another one on a support structure. Also, the distortion on the top surface due to stress release was measured by contact profilometry. High tensile residual stress values were found, with pronounced stress gradient along the hatching direction. In the sample on support stress redistribution took place after removal of the base plate, as opposed to simple stress relaxation for the sample without support. The sample on support structure showed larger distortion compared to sample without support. We conclude that the use of a support decreases stress values but stress relieving heat treatments are still needed.
In the present study, Ti-6Al-4V bridge-like specimens were manufactured additively by selective laser melting (SLM) under different laser scanning speed conditions in order to compare the effect of process energy density on the residual stress state. Subsurface residual stress analysis was conducted by means of synchrotron diffraction in energy dispersive mode for three conditions: as-built on base plate, released from base plate, and after heat treatment on the base plate. The quantitative residual stress characterization shows a correlation with the qualitative bridge curvature method. Computed tomography (CT) was carried out to ensure that no stress relief took place owing to the presence of porosity. CT allows obtaining spatial and size pores distribution which helps in optimization of the SLM process.
High tensile residual stresses were found at the lateral surface for samples in the as-built conditions. We observed that higher laser energy density during fabrication leads to lower residual stresses. Samples in released condition showed redistribution of the stresses due to distortion. A method for the calculation of the stress associated to distortion of the parts after cutting from base plate is proposed. The distortion measurements were used as input for FEM simulations.

Stress-induced damage evolution in cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy with one- and two ceramic reinforcements
(2017)
Two composites, consisting of an as-cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy reinforced with 15%vol. Al2O3 short fibres and with 7%vol. Al2O3 short fibres + 15%vol. SiC particles were studied. Synchrotron computed tomography disclosed distribution, orientation, and volume fraction of the different phases. In-situ compression tests during neutron diffraction in direction parallel to the fibres plane revealed the load partition between phases. Internal damage (fragmentation) of the Si phase and Al2O3 fibres was directly observed in CT reconstructions. Significant debonding between Al-matrix and SiC particles was also found. Finally, based on the Maxwell scheme, a micro-mechanical model was utilized for the new composite with two ceramic reinforcements; it rationalizes the experimental data, and predicts the evolution of all internal stress components in each phase.
