In this in vitro study, we got a first insight of a possible potential of Hypericin for the treatment of pediatric soft tissue sarcoma. By coupling with radioiodine, we developed a novel approach for a combined anti-tumor treatment. The in vitro experiments lay the foundation for further in vivo experiments, which are needed to study the effects of a sequential administration of 131I-HYP and HYP.
Greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities remain one of the most important subjects of international discussions. The routine gas flaring has been estimated to be responsible for as much as 1% of global carbon dioxide emission per year. Gas flaring analysis is one of the key-interest subjects in remote sensing community. Some of the existing publications use remote sensing techniques with satellite imagery to derive information about flame temperature and further about to estimate the volume of the flared gas. The often missing element is an in-situ measurement analysis of gas flames, combining signals recorded by a camera on-ground and data on flared gas volume, temperature and gas type. In order to address this problem, an experiment was conducted, in which the gas flame was recorded by thermal cameras on-ground, simultaneously to an aerial survey and the gas flow was measured at the same time on-ground. The measurement setup was designed in cooperation between Institute of Optical Sensor Systems of German Aerospace Center (DLR) and German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). Cameras recording in thermal and mid-wave IR wavelengths were used to record the burning gas on-ground and from the aerial survey. All the measurements have been compared and statistically analysed with respect to the recorded temperature. The purpose of the examination was to describe the signal changes in thermal imagery with respect to changes in energy, emitted by the burning process. This approach will allow for later calculation of the amount of energy in form of thermal radiation sent from the flame to the satellite.
Mussel-inspired multifunctional coating for bacterial infection prevention and osteogenic induction
(2021)
Bacterial infection and osteogenic integration are the two main problems that cause severe complications after surgeries. In this study, the antibacterial and osteogenic properties were simultaneously introduced in biomaterials, where copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were generated by in situ reductions of Cu ions into a mussel-inspired hyperbranched polyglycerol (MI-hPG) coating via a simple dip-coating method. This hyperbranched polyglycerol with 10 % catechol groups’ modification presents excellent antifouling property, which could effectively reduce bacteria adhesion on the surface. In this work, polycaprolactone (PCL) electrospun fiber membrane was selected as the substrate, which is commonly used in biomedical implants in bone regeneration and cardiovascular stents because of its good biocompatibility and easy post-modification. The as-fabricated CuNPs-incorporated PCL membrane [PCL-(MI-hPG)-CuNPs] was confirmed with effective antibacterial performance via in vitro antibacterial tests against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli), and multi-resistant E. coli. In addition, the in vitro results demonstrated that osteogenic property of PCL-(MI-hPG)-CuNPs was realized by upregulating the osteoblast-related gene expressions and protein activity. This study shows that antibacterial and osteogenic properties can be balanced in a surface coating by introducing CuNPs.
The prediction of the plastic collapse load of cylindrical pressure vessels is very often made by using expensive Finite Element Computations. The calculation of the collapse load requires an elastic-plastic material model and the consideration of non-linear geometry effects. The plastic collapse load causes overalls structural instability and cannot be determined directly from a finite element analysis. The ASME (2007) code recommends that the collapse load should be the load for which the numerical solution does not converge. This load can be only determined approximately if a expensive nonlinear analysis consisting of a very large number of sub steps is done. The last load sub step leading to a convergent solution will be taken as the critical load for the structure. In the instability regime no standard finite element solution can be found because of the lack of convergence of the numerical procedure. Other methods for the calculation of the allowable pressure proposed by the ASME code are the elastic stress analysis and the limit load analysis. In the present paper the plastic collapse load for a cylindrical pressure vessel is determined by an analytical method based on a linear elastic perfectly plastic material model. When plasticity occurs the material is considered as incompressible and the tensor of plastic strains is parallel to the stress deviator tensor. In that case the finite stress-strain relationships of Henkel can be used for calculating the pressure for which plastic flow occurs at the inside of the vessel wall or in the case of full plasticity in the wall. The analytical results are fully confirmed by finite element predictions both for axisymmetric and high costs three dimensional models. The analytical model can be used for fast predictions of the allowable load for the design of a large variety of pressure vessels under safety considerations. The accuracy of the predicted collapse load largely depends on the quality of the temperature dependent wall material data used both in the analytical and numerical calculations.
For stowage and retention during transport, the International Atomic EnergyAgency (IAEA) Transport regulations (SSR-6) only require that the package shall be securely stowed. Additional information is given in the IAEA guidance material (SSG-26), that includes specific load factors that should be considered in the safety demonstrations.
Nevertheless, applicants commonly use other load factors to justify the design of the packaging attachment points. In particular, acceleration values vary between different countries and this may lead to difficulties during the validation of foreign approval certificates.
Discussions with applicants identified that the load factors presented in the IAEA guidance material are not necessarily relevant for the different transport modes. For some modes, the load factors are representative of situations occurring in routine conditions of transport. For other modes, the load factors are more representative of situations occurring in normal or accident conditions of transport.
Furthermore, the origins of the specified values are not clear. In this context, some IAEA TRANSSC members decided to review the stowage guidance. An international working group was constituted in 2013, including representatives of competent authorities, technical support organizations, and transport stakeholders. Several topics were discussed
and many questions were raised during the two year review. For example, some discussions focused on Paper No.1031 2 the conditions which have to be considered for stowage design, both as relevant to the load factors used for strength and fatigue analysis, as well as the criteria which have to be considered for the package attachment points. In addition, related questions on operational aspects were also discussed. Overall, the working group concluded that new guidance material was warranted as input into SSG-26.
As a result of those discussions, the international working group produced new guidance material for stowage in transport, addressing each of these topics. The proposal to modify the IAEA guidance material (SSG-26, Appendix IV), presented by France to the TRANSSC in the 2015 initiated Review cycle of the Regulations, was unanimously accepted and will be implemented in the next edition of the guidance material.
