Organisationseinheit der BAM
Die Klassik-Stiftung Weimar besitzt eine umfangreiche Sammlung niederländischer und flämischer Zeichnungen vom 15. bis 19. Jahrhundert. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes »Kennerschaft heute« wurde der Bestand der über 1.500 Zeichnungen erstmals wissenschaftlich erschlossen. Das Handbuch führt anhand bedeutender Werkgruppen, darunter Zeichnungen von Lucas van Leyden, Dirck Vellert, Roelant Savery und Rembrandt, den Reichtum der Weimarer Sammlung vor Augen, die zum großen Teil auf die Sammelleidenschaft von Johann Wolfgang Goethe zurückgeht. Im Zentrum des Buches steht aber die Zusammenarbeit von traditioneller Stilkritik und naturwissenschaftlicher Materialanalyse. In zwölf Fallbeispielen wird die Notwendigkeit einer methodischen Neuausrichtung der Kennerschaft darlegt. Einen Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen bildet hierbei das große Konvolut an Zeichnungen von Rembrandt und seinen Schülern, das erstmals systematisch auf die verwendeten Zeichenmaterialien und Papiere untersucht wird.
The aim of the research project 'Typology of
Dutch Drawing' was to establish an interdisciplinary approach
for investigating heterogeneous drawing collections.
To define a type common to a group of drawings, we
determine elements that are common to them based on style
and the use of identical materials. To that end, we investigated
about 750 Dutch drawings from the sixteenth century at the
Dresden Kupferstich-Kabinett using art historical and
scientific methods. In this work, we present a detailed
analysis of 30 drawings ascribed to the Egmont Master.
The aim of this paper is to present the productive interplay of connoisseurship and material analysis when dealing with drawings by Rembrandt – or previously attributed to him – in the collection of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. This concerns the more precise determination of the drawing materials used and the reconstruction of the genesis of the drawings discussed. The material analysis allows us to decide whether and how Rembrandt’s inks can be used to determine authorship at all. The “material turn” in drawing studies thus intervenes in the discussion about authorship and opens up a broader production aesthetic perspective. No longer the “style” but rather the handeling becomes the decisive criterion for answering the question “Rembrandt, or not?”

Due to the penetration of harmful chlorides into concrete, e.g. from de-icing salt, damage processes such as chloride-related pitting corrosion can occur if critical values are exceeded. In this study, multiphase materials such as chloride-contaminated concrete are examined in detail. A direct comparison is made by analyzing the spectroscopic information of simultaneously measured atomic and molecular emissions with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In addition, the influence on the calibration is examined on the basis of the combined spectral information of both reaction paths of the penetrated chlorides. The calibration models of univariate and multivariate methods were validated using reference samples with wet chemical analysis. The results are applied to a concrete sample of a parking deck, which was also analyzed by potentiometric wet chemistry. In order to account for the heterogeneity of concrete, spatially (200 μm) and spectroscopically (0.1 nm) resolved LIBS measurements were performed using a fully automated laboratory system. Simultaneous measurements with three spectrometers allow the analysis of the emission processes of several elements such as Cl, Ca, O, Si and Mg as well as the newly formed molecules CaO and CaCl. The evaluation of the molecular emission in combination with atomic lines extends the analytical performance, since different concrete phases such as aggregates and cement matrix can be better represented. The measurements were carried out in ambient air and with helium purge gas. The limit of detection (LOD) achieved for a combined evaluation of atomic and molecular emission was determined to be 0.028 wt%.
