In this work, thin iron doped tin oxide layers (3–6 nm) were investigated with regard to gas sensitivity by means of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect with ellipsometric readout. The experimental set-up was a Kretschmann configuration with gold as metal layer. The sensor system was exposed to different concentrations of methane in the low ppm range and the sensor response of an uncoated gold layer compared to a gold layer coated with iron doped tin oxide. The additional layer effects stability with regard to drift behavior of the sensor and an increase in sensitivity. Furthermore, the sensor is able to detect the toxic gas carbon monoxide in low concentration range (down to 0.5 ppm). The thin layers were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary electron microscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The possible mechanisms taking place on the surface are discussed.
Modelling of detonation wave parameters, initiation and hazard of chemically active bubble systems
(2002)
The detonation processes in chemically active bubble systems at high initial pressures are calculated numerically. The dependences of detonation wave velocity at sub- and supersonic regimes of propagation on molar fraction of gas in the mixture and on initial pressure have been calculated for the first time. The Chapman-Jouguet condition for supersonic bubble detonation wave is obtained. The principal possibility for a different detonation wave structure in the case of propagation in the mixture with high initial pressure and longitudinal gradient of bubble volume fraction is predicted.
The dynamics and ignition of a chemically active bubble in a field of external pressure is analyzed. It is shown, that an inert diluent addition can increase the explosion hazard of heterogeneous gas - liquid systems. Calculations demonstrate the possibility of chemically active bubble ignition on the second pulsation. It is shown, that single chemically active bubble ignition is possible also owing to a decompression impulse.
An algorithm for the calculation of thermodynamic parameters of chemically equilibrium hydrocarbon gas with soot particles has been suggested. It is shown, that soot formation can have an essential influence on the dynamics of single bubble in chemically active hydrocarbon-oxygen (organic solvent (liquid) - oxidizer (gas)) heterogeneous systems.
The explosive properties of mixtures of aqueous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and different alcohols (ROH) like 2-propanol (2-PropOH), 2-methyl-2-propanol (TBA), 2-methyl-2-butanol (TAA) and 2-methyl-2-pentanol (THA) were investigated. Among others, the potential hazard of such mixtures may be characterized by their ability to react by different mechanisms of an explosion in the condensed phase, e.g. the thermal explosion or the detonation. Accordingly, the mixtures were experimentally investigated either by heating them up under confinement in different autoclaves or by exposing them to a shock wave impact applying the steel tube test. The results are discussed and compared to literature data.
