Main topics of the research project BEGLARES are the restoration of "dalle de verre" concrete Windows and the development of repair techniques and mortars. This project is executed in Cooperation between Glasmalerei Peters GmbH, the University of York and the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The main mechanism of damages, the development of repair mortar and special test specimens are presented.
Since the 1950's, art has been fascinated by concrete glazing. In countless buildings of the post-war period they determine the lighting effect of the space by its function as luminous walls. A peculiar kind of stained glass from partially filigree compositions of two such contrasting materials: delicate, luminous glass and rough, austere concrete. Artistically designed components, which are equipped with a range of stylistic subtleties. But even after o short time of exposure a whole catalogue of damage patterns has been revealed, which documents the decay processes, such as the carbonation initiated corrosion of reinforcement. Cathodic protection is already used in a wide range of repair of concrete structures. Taking into account technical and historical preservation requirements, this research project aims to transfer these techniques to the conservation of concrete-glazing under less health risk, cost and work effort.
