A report is presented on the development of a test for determining the long-term oxidation resistance of polyolefin materials, which is accelerated not only by elevated temperatures but also by increased oxygen pressure and a stirred aqueous medium. The method permits durability tests to be carried out at markedly lower temperatures with reasonable testing durations and significantly reduced diffusion limited oxidation effects and allows for physical and chemical impacts of aqueous media. Oxidative durability can be assessed by autoclave immersion exposures at three different temperatures (60, 70 and 80 degrees C) and 50 bar oxygen pressure and at 80 degrees C and two different oxygen pressures (usually 10 and 20 bar). Accelerated test data are evaluated by modified Arrhenius equations with the application of a three-dimensional regression analysis. The application of the test method to various materials, including PP non-woven materials and geosynthetics is demonstrated. 10 refs.
Porous ceramics prepared by the foam replication technique have a high porosity and low mechanical stability. It has been reported that coating such porous ceramics with gelatin allows for an improved compressive strength. Little details regarding the influence of important gelatin parameters such as concentration, temperature and drying conditions as well as bloom number which is a measure of the gel rigidity, on this toughening effect are available. This paper investigates the influence of these parameters on compressive strength of gelatin coated porous hydroxyapatite ceramics. It was found that concentration in the gelatin sols has a marked impact whereas sol temperature, bloom number and differing conditions during subsequent drying have only little influence on the compressive strength of the coated ceramics.
Ultrasonic imaging of tendon ducts enables the precise localisation of grouting faults in many cases. Additionally to well known criteria for detecting grouting faults in tendon ducts recently new possibilities were developed. Two main effects influence the complex behaviour of wave propagation and reflection: a) different arrangement and number of strands or internal rebars; b) superposition of reflecting signals and different wave modes propagating into the interface region around the tendon duct. In order to understand the experimental results, EFIT modelling is performed (EFIT: Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique).
Purpose – This purpose of this paper is to report about the temperature distribution in metal and ceramic powder beds during 3D printing. The differing powders are thoroughly characterized in terms of thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, emissivity spectra and density.
Design/methodology/approach – The temperature distribution was measured in a 3D printing appliance (Prometal R1) with the help of thin thermocouples (0.25 mm diameter) and thermographic imaging. Temperatures at the powder bed surface as well as at differing powder bed depths were determined. The thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and emissivity spectra of the powders were measured as well. Numerical simulation was used to verify the measured temperatures.
Findings – The ceramic powder heated up and cooled down more quickly. This finding corresponds well with numerical simulations based on measured values for thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity as well as emissivity spectra. An observed color change at the metal powder has only little effect on emissivity in the relevant wavelength region.
Research limitations/implications – It was found that thermocouple-based temperature measurements at the powder bed surface are difficult and these results should be considered with caution.
Practical implications – The results give practitioners valuable information about the transient temperature evolution for two widely used but differing powder systems (metal, ceramic). The paramount importance of powder bed porosity for thermal conductivity was verified. Already small differences in thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and hence volumetric heat capacity lead to marked differences in the transient temperature evolution.
Originality/value – The paper combines several techniques such as temperature measurements, spectral emissivity measurements, measurements of thermal conductivity and diffusivity and density measurements. The obtained results are put into a numerical model to check the obtained temperature data and the other measured values for consistency. This approach illustrates that determinations of surface temperatures of the powder beds are difficult.
Accurate and reliable detection of subsea Pipeline corrosion is required in order to verify the integrity of the pipeline. A laboratory trial was conducted with a representative pipe sample. The accurate measurement of the wall thickness and corrosion was performed with high energy X-rays and a digital detector array. A 7.5 MV betatron was used to penetrate a stepped pipe and a welded test pipe of 3 m length and 327 mm outer diameter, with different artificial corrosion areas in the 24 mm thick steel wall. The radiographs were taken with a 40 x 40 cm² digital detector array, which was not large enough to cover the complete pipe diameter after magnification. A C-arm based geometry was tested to evaluate the potential for automated inspection in field. The primary goal was the accurate measurement of wall thickness conforming to the standard. The same geometry was used to explore the ability of a C-arm based scanner in asymmetric mode for computed tomography (CT) measurement, taking projections covering only two thirds of the pipe diameter. The technique was optimized with the modelling Software aRTist. A full volume of the pipe was reconstructed and the CT data set was used for reverse engineering, providing a CAD file for further aRTist simulations to explore the technique for subsea inspections.
Subsurface granitic environments are scarce and poorly investigated. A multi-disciplinary approach was used to characterize the abundant moonmilk deposits and associated microbial communities coating the granite walls of the 16th Century Paranhos spring water tunnel in Porto city (north-west Portugal). It is possible that this study is the first record of moonmilk in an urban subsurface granitic environment. The morphology and texture, mineralogical composition, stable isotope composition and microbial diversity of moonmilk deposits have been studied to infer the processes of moonmilk formation. These whitish secondary mineral deposits are composed of very fine needle fibre calcite crystals with different morphologies and density. Calcified filaments of fungal hyphae or bacteria were distinguished by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Stable isotope analysis revealed a meteoric origin of the needle fibre calcite, with an important contribution of atmospheric CO2, soil respiration and HCO3 − from weathering of Ca-bearing minerals. The DNA-based analyses revealed the presence of micro-organisms related to urban contamination, including Actinobacteria, mainly represented by Pseudonocardia hispaniensis, Thaumarchaeota and Ascomycota, dominated by Cladosporium. This microbial composition is consistent with groundwater pollution and contamination sources of the overlying urban area, including garages, petrol stations and wastewater pipeline leakage, showing that the Paranhos tunnel is greatly perturbed by anthropogenic activities. Whether the identified micro-organisms are involved in the formation of the needle fibre calcite or not is difficult to demonstrate, but this study evidenced both abiotic and biogenic genesis for the calcite moonmilk in this subsurface granitic environment.
Germany had been transporting spent fuel to the reprocessing plant in Sellafield and La Hague for decades until around 2005. Resulting from the obligation to take back the vitrified high-level waste from reprocessing six CASTOR® HAW28M filled with 168 canisters with radioactive waste in vitrified form were transported from Sellafield to the interim storage facility Biblis in 2020. Rail wagons were used for the transport to the port in Barrow-in-Furness, where they were loaded into a dedicated seagoing vessel, certified as INF Class 3 according to the INF Code. This was the first time that vitrified high level waste with considerable heat load was transported under a German design approval certificate.
BAM was involved in the authority assessment of the conditions for the sea transport. For the first transport BAM required among others, assessment of temperature distribution during transport, logging of temperatures of cargo bays and graphical imaging of temperatures of the bay with the cask in order to ensure compliance with temperature specifications, e.g. maximal neutron absorber and gasket temperatures. Special interest was taken in the identification of possible events exceeding the specified temperatures considering the different philosophies of IMDG code and its supplement INF code regarding temperature control of hatches. Results show compliance with assumed conditions.
This work aims to address the technical aspects related to the thermodynamic characterization of natural gas mixtures blended with hydrogen for the introduction of alternative energy sources within the Power-to-Gas framework. For that purpose, new experimental speed of sound data are presented in the pressure range between (0.1 up to 13) MPa and at temperatures of (260, 273.16, 300, 325, and 350) K for two mixtures qualified as primary calibration standards: a 11 component synthetic natural gas mixture (11 M), and another low-calorific H2-enriched natural gas mixture with a nominal molar percentage x(H2) = 3 %.
Measurements have been gathered using a spherical acoustic resonator with an experimental expanded (k = 2) uncertainty better than 200 parts in 106 (0.02 %) in the speed of sound. The heat capacity ratio as perfect-gas gammapg, the molar heat capacity as perfect-gas Cp,m pg, and the second betaa and third gammaa acoustic virial coefficients are derived from the speed of sound values. All the results are compared with the reference mixture models for natural gas-like mixtures, the AGA8-DC92 EoS and the GERG-2008 EoS, with Special attention to the impact of hydrogen on those properties. Data are found to be mostly consistent within the model uncertainty in the 11 M synthetic mixture as expected, but for the hydrogen-enriched mixture in the limit of the model uncertainty at the highest measuring pressures.
Continuing our study on (CO2 + O2) mixtures, this work reports new experimental (p, rho, T) data for two oxygen-rich mixtures with mole fractions x(O2) = (0.50 and 0.75) mol·mol−1, in the temperature range T = (250–375) K and pressure range p = (0.5–20) MPa, using a single-sinker densimeter. Experimental density data were compared to two well-established equation-of-state models: EOS-CG and GERG-2008. In the p, T-range investigated, the EOS-CG gave a better reproduction for the equimolar mixture (x(O2) = 0.5), whereas the GERG-2008 performed significantly better for the oxygen-rich mixture (x(O2) = 0.75). The EOS-CG generally overestimates the density, while the GERG-2008 underestimates it. This complete set of new experimental data, together with previous measurements, is used to calculate the virial coefficients B(T, x) and C(T, x), as well as the second interaction virial coefficient B12(T) for the (CO2+ O2) system.
Speed of sound is one of the thermodynamic properties that can be measured with least uncertainty and is of great interest in developing equations of state. Moreover, accurate models are needed by the H2 industry to design the transport and storage stages of hydrogen blends in the natural gas network. This research aims to provide accurate data for (CH4 + H2) mixtures of nominal (5, 10, and 50) mol-% of hydrogen, in the p = (0.5 up to 20) MPa pressure range and with temperatures T = (273.16, 300, 325, 350, and 375) K. Using an acoustic spherical resonator, speed of sound was determined with an overall relative expanded (k = 2) uncertainty of 220 parts in 10^6 (0.022%). Data were compared to reference equations of state for natural gas-like mixtures, such as AGA8-DC92 and GERG-2008.
Average absolute deviations below 0.095% and percentage deviations between 0.029% and up to 0.30%, respectively, were obtained. Additionally, results were fitted to the acoustic virial equation of state and adiabatic coefficients, molar isochoric heat capacities and molar isobaric heat capacities as perfect-gas, together with second and third acoustic virial coefficients were estimated. Density second virial coefficients were also obtained.
This work aims to address the technical concerns related to the thermodynamic characterization of gas mixtures blended with hydrogen for the implementation of hydrogen as a new energy vector. For this purpose, new experimental speed of sound measurements have been done in gaseous and supercritical phases of two binary mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen using the most accurate technique available, i.e., the spherical acoustic resonator, yielding an experimental expanded (k = 2) uncertainty of only 220 parts in 106 (0.022%). The measurements cover the pressure range between (0.5 and 20) MPa, the temperature range between (260 and 350) K, and the composition range with a nominal mole percentage of hydrogen of (5 and 10) mol%, respectively.
From the speed of sound data sets, thermophysical properties that are relevant for the characterization of the mixture, namely the second βa and third γa acoustic virial coefficients, are derived. These results are thoroughly compared and discussed with the established reference mixture models valid for mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen, such as the AGA8-DC92 EoS, the GERG-2008 EoS, and the recently developed adaptation of the GERG-2008 EoS, here denoted GERG-H2_improved EoS. Special attention has been given to the effect of hydrogen concentration on those properties, showing that only the GERG-H2_improved EoS is consistent with the data sets within the experimental uncertainty in most measuring conditions.
This thesis presents a new strategy and a spatial method for the geometric calibration of 3D measurement devices at the micro-range, based on spatial reference structures with nanometer-sized landmarks (nanomarkers). The new method was successfully applied for the 3D calibration of scanning probe microscopes (SPM) and confocal laser scanning microscopes (CLSM). Moreover, the spatial method was also used for the photogrammetric self-calibration of scanning electron microscopes (SEM). In order to implement the calibration strategy to all scanning microscopes used, the landmark-based principle of reference points often applied at land survey or at close-range applications has been transferred to the nano- and micro-range in the form of nanomarker. In order to function as a support to the nanomarkers, slopeshaped step pyramids have been developed and fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) induced metal deposition. These FIB produced 3D microstructures have been sized to embrace most of the measurement volume of the scanning microscopes. Additionally, their special design allows the homogenous distribution of the nanomarkers. The nanomarkers were applied onto the support and the plateaus of the slope-step pyramids by FIB etching (milling) as landmarks with as little as several hundreds of nanometers in diameter. The nanomarkers are either of point-, or ring-shaped design. They are optimized so that they can be spatially measured by SPM and CLSM, and, imaged and photogrammetrically analyzed on the basis of SEM data. The centre of the each nanomarker serves as reference point in the measurement data or images. By applying image processing routines, the image (2D) or object (3D) coordinates of each nanomarker has been determined with subpixel accuracy. In contrast to the spatial reference structures applied for the spatial calibration method introduced here, present calibration methods for scanning microscopes use sequential measurements of 2D lattice and height step structures. This means that the determination of the scale factor for the height measurement yields an average value for the full scan area. Thus, the height scale factor remains independent of the lateral scanning position, and, therefore, it will be impossible to determine the coupling of the lateral coordinate axes and the z-axis as a shear factor with the sequential calibration method. On this account, an affine geometrical model has been used here, that allows for scale factors in all space directions, and, for coupling between all coordinate axes. With the help of the correlative analysis of the measurement data of all measurement methods applied (SPM, CLSM and photogrammetric SEM), for the first time, all scale factors, as well as the linear coupling of the probes used for the height measurement could be determined dependent on the lateral scanning position. It could be shown that the scanning movement of the SPM and the CLSM is erroneous. Due to hysteresis effects and guidance errors of the scanning generators, due to errors and peculiarities of the control cycle, and because of misaligned attachment of the probe with respect to the scanning plane, the measurement coordinate system is not identical to the ideal reference coordinate system. Scale and orthogonality of the measurement coordinate system have to be calibrated and corrected, in order to maintain the traceability to the SI-unit meter, and, therefore, to allow for quantitative dimensional 3D measurements. However, the correlative analysis of the SPM, CLSM and photogrammetric SEM measurement data after 3D calibration resulted in mean residues in the measured coordinates of as little as 13 nm. Without the coupling factors the mean residues are up to 6 times higher. By taking into account the orthogonality of the measurement coordinate axes when performing a 3D calibration, a comparative and quantitative analysis of 3D scanning microscopy has been made possible.
Zur Phänomenologie der Heißrissbildung beim Schweißen und Entwicklung aussagekräftiger Prüfverfahren
(2006)
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) can change their shape on application of a suitable stimulus. To enable such behavior, a ‘programming’ procedure fixes a deformation, yielding a stable temporary shape. In thermoresponsive SMPs, subsequent heating triggers entropy-elastic recovery of the initial shape. An additional shape change on cooling, i.e. thermoreversible two-way actuation, can be stimulated by a crystallization phenomenon. In this thesis, cyclic thermomechanical measurements systematically determined (1) the shape memory and (2) the actuation behavior under constant load as well as under stress-free conditions. Chemically cross-linked, star-shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane polyurethane (SPOSS-PU) hybrid polymer networks and physically cross-linked poly(ester urethane) (PEU) block copolymers were investigated around the melting and crystallization temperatures of their polyester soft segments. (1) The SPOSS-PUs showed excellent shape fixities and recoverabilities of almost 100% at high cross-linking density, while PEUs exhibited pronounced shape memory properties at increased soft segment content. Furthermore, two-fold programmed SPOSS-PU specimens were able to recover their initial shape in two thermally separated events. Even a neck, which formed during deformation of SPOSS-PUs with high soft segment content, was reversed. (2) In PEUs, globally oriented crystallization on cooling drove expansion of the sample, in particular at high soft segment content and after application of a strong deformation. Melting reversed that orientation; the PEU sample contracted and thereby completed the thermoreversible actuation cycle. Under load, multiple polymorphic phase transitions enabled two successive expansion and contraction steps, while under stress-free conditions various geometric shape changes, including the increase and decrease of PEU sample length and thickness as well as twisting and untwisting could be experimentally witnessed. Such actuation technology allows for entirely new applications, enabling mimicry of reversible, bidirectional and repeated organic movements.
Optical filters and fabrics are important parts of laser safety equipment such as goggles and curtains. A choice of these materials with varying absorption spectra is investigated with respect to their resistance to Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser radiation (800 nm wavelength, 1 kHz repetition rate). Pulse durations down to 30 fs and multiple-pulse irradiation conditions are employed to evaluate technically relevant damage thresholds. The ablation threshold fluences of the absorbing filters are comparable to those observed for transparent materials with 30-fs-pulses. These investigations together with scanning electron microscopy of the surface morphology after laser treatment provide insight into the interaction mechanism of the short pulses with the materials.
A research project is described involving a comparison of different non-destructive test methods for concrete bridges. A cooperative test series was started with the aim to compare and evaluate the performance and benefits of the latest technical developments in this field. For this purpose test specimens with localized defects were produced. Different modifications of radar, ultrasonic-echo and impact-echo methods were investigated. Including two- and three- dimensional reconstruction models. The experiments were accompanied by numerical simulation of the propagation of sound waves and microwaves. The results showed that the radar and the ultrasonic methods were efficient tools to locate the tendon ducts accurately if the reinforcing bars were not to narrowly spaced. The ultrasonic imaging methods were capable of identifying injection and compaction faults in a blind test. The good performance of the impact-echo method with regard to locating tendon ducts which was claimed in several publications could not be validated in the present investigations. The simulation models provided valuable information on how to improve the experimental test program and its evaluation.
