diskutiert.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to the large-scale mass flow of construction and demolition wastes, the recycling of those
residues is of particular importance for the conservation of natural resources. An important
requirement for recycling on a high level, like the reuse of crushed concrete as recycled concrete
aggregate, is the observation of limits for hazardous substances and impurities. This study is focusing
on the reduction of sulphates in the eluate of crushed concrete. An investigation of possibilities to
optimize demolition and dismantling as well as treatment of crushed concrete with the objective of
gaining recycled concrete aggregates of high quality. Based on a literature research and a data review
the origins of sulfates in buildings and also the availability of techniques for demolition and treatment
of crushed concrete are listed and evaluated. Using the examples of different building types scenarios
for selective dismantling and non-selective demolition (focused on reducing suphates) are evaluated in
terms of affecting the environment. In addition samples from real demolition construction sites and
plants for treatment of construction rubble were investigated. Based on these results
recommendations for the production of high quality recycled concrete aggregates are worked out.
CFRP materials are progressively used in areas where the weight as well as the strength of materials matter. Since they are used in safety relevant environments, like aircrafts and cars, an assessment of the components for defects is mandatory. Flash thermography has proven to be a valuable tool to resolve defects. However, a quantitative evaluation of the defect extent and depth within the specimen is extremely challenging, since the commonly used analytical models do not incorporate lateral heat flow around the defect areas. Hence a reconstruction of the samples by numerical simulations is a path to improve the results. This finally enables pass and fail tests for specimens based on quantitative results.
The properties of the anisotropic CFRP materials vary dependent on the matrix and fibre chosen. In addition the fabrication processes are distinct, hence it is strongly desirable to measure the properties of a sound sample in a fast and reliable way. The knowledge of diffusivity and heat capacity in three dimensions finally enables the simulation to improve modelling the specimen geometry.
The in-plane diffusivity is determined by heating the sample with a laser line (a flat top profiled focused in one dimension) and monitoring the transient temperature at the front surface of the sample. This method is compared to measurements of the diffusivity using a Gaussian laser spot. The results are compared to results obtained by flash thermography in transmission.
In addition the heating process of the sample on its surface as well the heat conduction is monitored using an IR-microscopic objective. Hence the transparency of the sample as well as the temperature conduction of the two components in microscopic scale can be studied. Finally the results are applied to provide precise parameters in the simulation of defects in a CFRP sample.
It is gratefully acknowledged that the present work is funded by the DFG within the framework of the project WE 2937/6-1.
Carbon-fiber reinforced composites are becoming more and more important in the production of light-weight structures, e.g., in the automotive and aerospace industry. Thermography is often used for non-destructive testing of These products, especially to detect delaminations between different layers of the composite.
In this presentation, we aim at methods for defect reconstruction from thermographic measurements of such carbon-fiber reinforced composites. The reconstruction results shall not only allow to locate defects, but also give a quantitative characterization of the defect properties. We discuss the simulation of the measurement process using finite element methods, as well as the experimental validation on flat bottom holes.
Especially in pulse thermography, thin boundary layers with steep temperature gradients occurring at the heated surface need to be resolved. Here we use the combination of a 1D analytical solution combined with numerical solution of the remaining defect equation. We use the simulations to identify material Parameters from the measurements.
Finally, fast heuristics for reconstructing defect geometries are applied to the acquired data, and compared for their accuracy and utility in detecting different defects like back surface defects or delaminations.
Influence of the real energy input on the sensitivity of thermographic testing in case of GFRP
(2018)
Thermographic testing (TT) is an upcoming nondestructive method, which requires no contact at all to the specimen and can be applied on larger areas simultaneously. The measurement concept is based on the production of a thermal imbalance at the surface of the object under test. When the surface of this object is heated by an external source for a certain time, the surface temperature drops subsequently, influenced by inner defects of the sample. This leads to thermal contrasts at the surface. It is crucial that those contrasts are large enough to be detectable above the noise level. In a first approximation, the observed temperature contrast at a defect is proportional to the energy which was really introduced into the specimen during the heating period. However, the real energy input in a TT experiment is almost always unknown due to distinct parameters of the experimental setup or the material investigated. Typically, only the power consumption of the heating sources is reported, sometimes combined with the distance to the specimen surface.
This contribution describes the thermographic inspection of a rear side thickness variation from 1 to 2 cm at GFRP. This could represent a rear side adhesive bond i.e. in a wind turbine rotor blade. The front side heating was realized by usual halogen lamps with variable radiation power. The detected temperature contrast at the front side will be related to the different energy inputs determined by means of a simple analytical model applied to the experimental data. Additionally, the experimental data are compared with results of FEM simulations performed by COMSOL Multiphysics.
The results clearly demonstrate the key role of the real energy input in a real TT setup, if detection limits have to be evaluated.
The applicability of 1D-quadrupole-model on the depth estimation of overload-induced delaminations is tested in this contribution. While classical 1D-methods like Pulsed Phase Transformation and Thermographic Signal Reconstruction determine the depth of a defect by one parameter, a two-layer quadrupole model provides two parameters: depth and thermal resistance. In addition, the convectional losses at the surfaces may be considered. The defect investigated is a large-scale delamination in glass fibre reinforced polymer generated by tension overload.
The one-dimensional thermal quadrupole method is used to evaluate a pulsed thermography measurement at delaminations in a glass-fiber reinforced plastic plate quantitatively. The large-scale delaminations have been induced by tension overload and are air-filled and are usually located at the same depth as the notch bottom of a notch on the rear side. While classical evaluation methods like pulsed phase thermography and thermal Signal reconstruction are focused on the delamination depth only, the thermal quadrupole method determines spatially resolved two parameters for delaminations, delamination depth and local thermal resistance. Interestingly, lateral heat flows do not disturb this kind of depth evaluation.
Flash thermography is a fast and reliable non-destructive testing method for the investigation of defects in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials. In this paper numerical simulations of transient thermography data are presented, calculated for a quasi-isotropic flat bottom hole sample. They are compared to experimental data. These simulations are one important step towards the quantitative reconstruction of a flaw by assessing thermographic data. The applied numerical model is based on the finite-element method, extended by a semi-analytical treatment of the boundary of the sample, which is heated by the flash light. A crucial part for a reliable numerical model is the prior determination of the material parameters of the specimen as well as of the experimental parameters of the set-up. The material parameters in plane and in depth diffusivity are measured using laser line excitation. In addition, the absorption and heat transfer process of the first layers is investigated using an IR microscopic lens. The performance of the two distinct components of CFRP during heating – epoxy resin and carbon fibers – is examined. Finally, the material parameters are optimized by variation and comparison of the simulation results to the experimental data. The optimized parameters are compared to the measured ones and further methods to ensure precise material parameter measurements are discussed.

Active thermography is a well suited non-destructive testing method for the challenging inspection of wind rotor blades. Since the GFRP structures are up to some centimetres thick, long pulse heating is required to provide an appropriate energy input into the structure. So far, no best practice exists to guarantee a reliable detection of deep-lying flaws. In this work, a step wedge specimen having a maximum thickness of 34mm is systematically investigated by experiment and well-matched simulations to assess the influence of the experimental parameters, like the absorbed energy, on thermal contrasts. Finally, a scheme to conduct full-scale test of a wind rotor blade in less than three hours is proposed.
A major industrial reaction based on homogeneous catalysis is hydroformylation for the production of aldehydes from alkenes and syngas. Hydroformylation in microemulsions, which is currently under investigation at Technische Universität Berlin on a mini-plant scale, was identified as a cost efficient approach which also enhances product selectivity. Herein, we present the application of online Raman spectroscopy on the reaction of 1-dodecene to 1-tridecanal within a microemulsion. To achieve a good representation of the operation range in the mini-plant with regard to concentrations of the reactants a design of experiments was used. Based on initial Raman spectra partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were calibrated for the prediction of 1-dodecene and 1-tridecanal. Limits of predictions arise from nonlinear correlations between Raman intensity and mass fractions of compounds in the microemulsion system. Furthermore, the prediction power of PLSR models becomes limited due to unexpected by-product formation. Application of the lab-scale derived calibration spectra and PLSR models on online spectra from a mini-plant operation yielded promising estimations of 1-tridecanal and acceptable predictions of 1-dodecene mass fractions suggesting Raman spectroscopy as a suitable technique for process analytics in microemulsions.
