The DIN ISO 16000-28 and VDI 4302-1 describe a method for the assessment of the perceived intensity of odours. It is based on a trained assessment panel using a referencing scale that provides defined acetone concentrations. Due to the AgBB-scheme including a place holder for odour assessment it is currently checked whether the method is applicable.
To check the applicability a pilot phase regarding the „Implementation of Odour Measurements into the Assessment of Building Products“ was started by AgBB1 in 2012. Düring this phase amongst others two interlaboratory tests were conducted. The first one in 2012 served to test the applicability and to identify need and potential for improvement. Based on those findings an additional Standard Operation procedure was developed for the second interlaboratory test in 2014.
The second interlaboratory test confirmed the findings of the first one and the need for improvement of the measurement method as well. Nonetheless both tests showed Standard deviations of reproducibility between 20 and 40%. Standard deviations of reproducibility of well-established interlaboratory tests for VOCs show comparable results.
Applicability: Odour Measurement based on ISO 16000-28 Enhanced determination of Indoor Air Quality

Während in der Vergangenheit insbesondere die Entwicklung einer sensorischen Prüfmethode (in DIN ISO 16000-28 und VDI 4302-1 genormt und im AgBB-Schema verankert) für die Bewertung von Bauprodukten im Vordergrund der Betrachtungen stand, wurde im Rahmen der vom UBA initiierten Pilotphase mithilfe des Ringversuches erstmals die institutsübergreifende Anwendbarkeit dieser Verfahren untersucht. Ziel dabei war es, noch bestehende Schwierigkeiten im Umgang mit der Prüfmethode zu identifizieren und Empfehlungen für das weitere Vorgehen herauszuarbeiten.
While in 2012 a commercially available acrylic sealant was used as sample material, in 2014 a lacquer doped with specific substances was sent to the participants for the VOC and odour measurement. The resulting measurement values for the perceived intensity were evaluated in consideration of various boundary conditions to identify parameters that could possibly influence the measurement procedure significantly. For the comparison of both interlaboratory comparisons qualified data sets were taken as a basis. Potential for improvement identified in 2012 was mainly confirmed by the interlaboratory test 2014 as well. Besides the accurate conduction as essential part of the measurement it became obvious again that the boundary conditions of the DIN ISO 16000-28 are not defined tight enough. Moreover the thesis that measurements based on the utilisation of comparison scales with only one funnel generate results especially imprecise could not be verified. Both interlaboratory comparisons resulted in relative standard deviations of reproducibility that lay between 20 and 40 % and such are quite comparable with those of well-established interlaboratory VOC comparisons.
