The water management in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is strongly influenced by the design of the gas diffusion layers (GDL). Limiting current measurements in small-scale cells operating at high stoichiometries are useful to determine the oxygen transport resistance. The oxygen transport resistance increases, once water condenses inside the GDL. In this study a new electrochemical method for voltage loss estimation of GDL induced oxygen transport losses are presented. This new method, referred to as “transient limiting current” (TLC), is compared with the literature method. TLC allows a direct estimation of oxygen transport resistance at an arbitrarily conditioned state. This study also presents a case study of liquid water visualization of a PEM fuel cell with varying GDLs types.
With the help of quasi in-situ synchrotron X-ray computed tomography and time resolved radiography measurements we investigate appearance and distribution of liquid water inside the GDLs under limiting current conditions.
The 57Fe-Moessbauer spectrum of (dmpipzH2)2[FeIII(H2O)2Cl4][FeIII Cl4]Cl2 (1) consists of two doublets caused by a strongly distorted octahedral and a non-distorted tetrahedral component. Both (dmpipzH2)[FeIIIBr4]2 (2) and (trienH2)[FeIIIBr4]Br (3) show only one doublet indicating a more strongly distorted iron(III) species for 2 and a less-distorted one in the case of 3. For all compounds investigated, the ESR spectra reveal the existence of ground states with predominant antiferromagnetic coupling. The Néel temperatures amount to <4.2 K for 1, 4 K for 3 and 48 K for 2. In the case of 2, both the Moessbauer and the ESR spectra reveal the formation of exchange-coupled {FeBr4} units which has been attributed to a significant cation influence. The fine structure of residual paramagnetic [FeBr4]- subunits remaining in the crystalline matrix could be directly determined. Temperature dependent AC and DC susceptibility measurements of 2 and 3 confirmed the results.
A series of crystalline aluminum hydroxy fluorides in cubic pyrochlore structure AlFx(OH)3-x·H2O with variable F-content x were investigated by solid-state NMR by applying different magnetic fields up to 21.1 T. Distinguishable octahedral species AlFx(OH)6-x (x = 1-6) were identified in the crystalline aluminum hydroxy fluorides. The subsequent analysis of the highfield 27Al MAS NMR data allows the derivation of the trend analysis graphs giving correlations between the 27Al chemical shifts and the quadrupolar frequencies and the F-content x in AlFx(OH)6-x. Clear trends were obtained for both, which are, along with the 19F MAS chemical-shift trend analysis presented earlier, valuable tools for the interpretation of MAS NMR spectra of amorphous AlFx(OX)3-x compounds (X = H, alkyl). Following the dehydration of the pyrochlores by solid-state NMR eventually reveals a remarkable influence of the incorporated solvent molecules (H2O) on the 19F chemical shift. On that basis, a new chemical-shift trend analysis for 19F chemical shifts in correlation with x in AlFx(OH)6-x units for proton-poor substances (in the Al, F, O, H system) was determined. By using this correlation, high-surface AlF3 has a mean bulk Al:F ratio similar to that found for ACF, namely, AlF2.8(O/OH)0.2.
The approaching CO2 targets have now enforced automotive OEMs to engage R&D efforts also in powertrain to reduce friction, increase lifetime properties, and load carrying capacities of running systems. Martensitic steels such as 36NiCrMoV1-5-7 have a great potential to be used in automotive powertrain applications due to its favorable mechanical properties. In order to realize lightweight strategies, it is essential that steels with improved fracture toughness values and higher annealing temperatures with regard to higher contact pressures and possible thin film coating application be considered. State-of-the-art steels, like 16MnCr5, 21NiCrMo, 30CrMoV9, and 100Cr6 are not able to sustain a further increase in torque or load during operating time as well as annealing effects under higher oil or deposition temperatures. Therefore, the recent research on the slip-rolling resistance, frictional, and wear behavior of steels such as 36NiCrMoV1-5-7, Cronidur 30 (AMS 5898), 20MnCr5 (SAE 4820 or 5120), and 100Cr6H (SAE E52100) showed that possible lean alloying concept alternatives with promising performance characteristics are already available.
Performance and efficiency of piezo-electric stick-slip actuators are dependent on the waveform of the electrical actuation of the piezo-stack. This paper compares between a conventional saw-tooth actuation with two waveforms that feature softer acceleration in order to minimize the duration of the slip-phase. It is shown that the proposed waveforms increase both maximum mechanical output power (by 43%) and overall efficiency (by 25%) of the examined actuator.
Stepping piezoelectric actuators based on the stick-slip effect inherently make use of a friction contact between strator and rotor. This contact defines not only the actuator's performance but also is prone to wear and tear. For broad use, the actuator has to be able to perform around 1 million strokes. To assess the actuator's performance in terms of force, speed, mechanical output, electrical input, and long-term stability under different load- and environmental conditions, as well as different friction partners, a dedicated test-bed for a LSPA30µXS motor by Cedrat Technologies has been set up.
