As shown recently, the quantification of damage in historic masonry structures is possible by using active thermography. In this paper, a case study is presented concerning systematic studies of the determination of damage size and prognosis of damage increase inside a sandstone column by using different approaches of active thermography. Various heating sources as well as impulse and periodic heating have been compared. Reproducible investigations in regular time intervals for structural monitoring are possible.
The paper presents numerical methods to detect and classify defects and inhomogeneities by means of active thermography. The objective is to determine the wall thickness of structure elements with an inaccessible back wall, for example, of pipes or Containers. As test specimens we used approximately 2 cm thick PVC samples with spatial variations in the back wall geometry. Flash lamps provided the heating. To know the thickness of the wall, we used two inversion methods and compared the results achieved. One is an iterative echo defect shape method and already tested on Steel test specimens with good reconstruction results. The second one is the Levenberg-Marquardt method, applied here to thermographic data for non-destructive testing. Since data capturing using active thermography and the presented numerical methods can easily be automated, the combination of these two procedures is a promising approach providing a broad area of application.
Active thermography is a nowadays widely used NDT method making use of thermal material properties for defect detection. Basically, the sample is heated and the resulting surface temperature is recorded by an IR camera. For laser thermography a laser is used to heat the sample locally. The resulting spherical heat flow allows the detection of voids in arbitrary orientation. In this work, a method is presented which is suitable for the quantitative characterization of depth and angle of surface cracks. The main idea is to evaluate the crack-caused asymmetries of the laser's thermal footprint. The heat is introduced at fixed reference positions relative to the crack. In this paper a data analysis procedure is presented which allows the crack depth and angle to be described by only two characteristic scalar parameters. By investigating artificial test specimens with spark eroded notches, the feasibility of this method is validated. Furthermore, the behavior of the characteristic parameters with variations of crack angle, depth and experimental conditions is studied systematically by FEM simulations, showing that these parameters are well behaved.
In this contribution, the authors present the results of a project which involves the
development of a testing standard for flash thermography. In addition to the standardization of
the selection of appropriate equipment and procedures for testing and data analysis, the new
standard will provide suitable reference test specimens for several materials, including CFRP
as used in aerospace applications with typical flaws. We will particularly consider these test
specimens which should enable qualification of the equipment as well as the validation of the
flash thermography method for CFRP in general.
Validation of non-destructive testing methods is necessary to create a common basis where different systems can be compared and their applications and limitations be identified. This can be achieved through comparing the measurements taken by several systems used for a common diagnostic purpose under practical but controlled testing conditions. Well-designed small and large laboratory or field specimens promise such conditions.
The special concrete specimen (LCS) at BAM was constructed for validation purposes, in particular, to be used for evaluating the performance of echo methods. The thickness of the specimen is varying and it contains carefully designed built-in faults, such as voids, honeycombs and tendon ducts with various degrees of grouting defects. Since the geometry and condition of the defects are known, it can be used to compare the performance of radar, ultrasonic, impact-echo. The research was conducted within the Research group FOR384, sponsored by the German Research Society DFG.
Radar und Datenfusion
(2007)
False colour infrared (IR) thermography was performed on a sunny summer day in the Berlin Botanic Garden. The main interest focused on blossoms of different size, colours and shapes: disk-, bowl- and funnel-like anatomy demonstrating various modes of light absorption and heating-up during the day. Some of the flowers were phototropic or even solar tracking. Blossom temperatures ranged from 18.0 to 33.3 °C (mean 26.3 ± 2.5 °C, S.D., n = 37) at 21 °C air temperature. Several thermograms showed honey- and bumblebees also. In some cases the results are compared with those of a contact-free IR thermometry. One winter- and one late-spring-flowering plant are included in the overview.
Radar - Case studies of the application of radar for non-destructive testing of concrete structures

Non-destructive testing (NDT) of concrete structures plays an increasing role in civil engineering. This paper presents the results of systematic measurements carried out in the laboratory at BAM and on-site at several bridges using reconstructed and fused radar and ultrasonic echo data sets. For investigating the influence of concrete mixture, radar and ultrasonic measurements were performed at test specimens consisting of concrete mixtures with different pore content and distribution as well as with steel fibres. Further, it is demonstrated how the fusion of data sets recorded with different methods at the same structure (here: concrete bridges) enhances the information content in the fused data set. Different approaches for data fusion algorithms are discussed. The results of these investigations show the high potential of reconstruction and data fusion for the improvement and simplification of the interpretability of large data sets measured with impulse-echo methods. The presented results are based on the research project FOR384 funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).
(2004)
Non-destructive and minor destructive testing methods enable a classification of historic structures, building processes, applied building technologies and materials. Therefore, these methods should be part of the global investigation of historic buildings which is usually required before the planning of any building intervention. The case study presented herein encompasses experimental work carried out at the St. Servatius Church in Quedlinburg, Germany. Within a comprehensive restoration campaign, non-destructive on-site investigations were carried out with radar and ultrasonics. The results were combined with plans, views and cores recorded in advance.
Betrachtet man
