The interaction of nanosecond laser pulses in the ultraviolet wavelength range and femtosecond laser pulses in the near-infrared region with the direct semiconductor SiC and the composite compound SiC-TiC-TiB2 was investigated in respect to resulting physicochemical processes. Surface analytical techniques, such as XPS, µ-Raman, and EDX were used to identify the chemical changes between untreated and laser-treated areas. Single-pulse irradiation led to material
modifications in the condensed state in most instances. Multi-pulse results differed depending on the pulse duration. In the nanosecond case, melting of the surface and redeposited material (debris) were observed. With femtosecond pulses instead, only negligible melting and few debris could be detected. Additionally, periodic structures (ripples) appeared, with parallel orientation and in most cases two different periodicities for a particular material. Laser ablation of all the studied compound materials exhibited preferential ablation of the lighter component elements. Crystal structure changes of the irradiated surface were observed as a consequence of laser-induced melting and resolidification. An oxidation process interfered with all this processes so that unstoichiometric oxides were formed.
The gelcasting process was used for manufacturing porous ceramic bodies from nano sized powders. 3 different powders with specific surface areas between 12 and 30 m²/g were used. Solid content of the corresponding slurries was dependent on the milling procedure and the use of a suitable dispersant. For bimodal GradeA powder solid content was as high as 58 vol%. For sintering temperatures between 1250 and 1600°C the porosity varied between 45 and 20%, whereas the pore radii varied between 50 and 91nm. The grain size of crystallites in the sintered microstructures was about 1um. The reflection ratio for visible light increased in comparison to a reference sample made from conventional powder from 0.8 to 0.95 in the wavelenght range around 400nm.
Stick-slip and wear behavior of ceramic and polymer materials under reciprocating sliding conditions
(2013)
In many technical applications not only the actual friction coefficient is of importance, but rather the constancy relevant for the functionality. Due to inconstant ffiction values, positioning processes can be substantially influenced as well as vibrations can be induced. The appearance of this tribological effect, named stick-slip, depends on different factors such as sliding speed, relative humidity and ambient temperature occurring primarily after long operating periods. Beside ambient conditions the choice of materials in contact is the main influencing factor of an inconstant coefficient of friction during operating. Certain polymers are well known for their stick-slip tendencies in technical applications. These are on the one hand different modifications of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) reinforced with glass fibers, bronze or graphite and on the other hand thermoplastics such as PE (polyester) or Pf (polyimide). The difference between static and dynamic values of the ffiction force is decisive for stick-slip phenomena. Furthermore, the stick-slip tendency of polymers strongly depends on the elastic material properties. Main softening material areas, which can be found in the contact, represent particularly vulnerable areas. The high friction value in the contact area decreases in most cases by increasing sliding speeds. However, beside polymers ceramic materials can also offer tendencies to stick-slip motion. Klaffke et al. already investigated the influence of ceramic materials on the stick-slip behavior in.
liegen.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The wear rates can be quantified in the nm range by calculating a mean profile. Based on this calculation is the
high-resolution recording of the 3D topography data containing tribologically worn and unworn surface areas
alike. A specific measurement method (tactile or visual) is not favored. The vertical resolution of the measurement
process should be in the nm range.
Zero wear (Null Verschleiß)
(2012)
Recent developments in contact mechanics and microfribology have shown that it is very important to study surface modification effects for quantification of „Zero wear“ (plastic deformation of upper parts of asperities) during sliding friction. The present work considers experimental and Simulation data on the Formation of elastic and plastic contact areas during sliding friction on rough surfaces. The Simulation of discrete contact was carried out using as a source the AFMimages of real surface topography at micro/nanoscale.
The approach for quantification of „zero wear“, proposed here, is not using common Statistical Parameters of roughness, but it considers contact areas on asperities.
In these areas some regions are undergoing plastic deformation which influences surface Transformation during sliding friction. Also, the workhardening effect was taken into account in the Simulation
of sliding friction. This enabled a rnore successful fit of experimental data. The results obtained of the Computer simulations will provide a way of studying friction force at the initial stage of the running-in process.
The influence of temperature and counterbody material on the tribological properties of a-C:H
coatings deposited on Cronidur 30 steel has been investigated in a lubricated ball on disk
contact situation with alpha-alumina and silicon nitride as counterbodies. The results show, that the wear volumes of the systems increase exponentially with increasing temperature, for alpha-alumina more than for silicon nitride. Two different wear mechanisms seem to have a
major influence: First, the abrasive action due to materials hardness and second, the tribo-oxidation when silicon nitride is counter material.
