Several restoration projects of stained-glass windows have been performed in Poland since 2010.Chemical analysis of glass samples was performed with SEM/EDX on a FEI ESEM-XL 30, (EDX-EDAX) and with Micro-XRF (M4 Tornado, Bruker). The chemical composition of medieval glass samples and of glass samples of the 19th Century have been determined.
Mediaeval stained glass has been treated with Polymethylmetacrylate coatings by Kwiatkowski in Poland during the 1950th. Such treated panels were found in the Johannis Church of Toruń (without protective glazing), in the Cathedral of Włocławek (behind a protective glazing), and on glass kept in exhibition cases in the museum of Toruń. Surface coatings have been detected and analyzed. There was no extensive contamination by fungi or bacteria if the glass was either coated or not.
The identification of external paint layers on medieval stained glass windows in Lincoln Cathedral is not only of interest for art historians but is also important for the development of conservation proposals. For the gradual reduction and removal of corrosion layers conservators have to take care to preserve any remaining paint layers which are hidden underneath these corrosion and weathering crusts.
A number of environmental monitoring projects were performed on historic stained-glass windows in Germany. The quality of the protective glazing was assessed by recording environmental parameters in the interspace between the original and the protective glazing and on the inside of the original window. For this purpose, temperature, humidity and air velocity were measured. Particles were sampled with different methods and analysed by scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to determine their chemical composition. The effect of particles on model glass samples was investigated in climate chambers under accelerated weathering conditions.
