This report is based on a three-year experience as coordinator of the ACP-EU funded SPIN project. The project involved eight African and three European partners. Practical and unforeseeable problems are addressed that occurred during the project implementation and ways how they were successfully solved are reported. The major problems in many African institutions were administrations that are not used to work in multi-national consortia and a lack of institutional support for the African researchers. In Europe a misjudgement of the African boundary conditions as well as inflexible administrations caused problems. Finally the funding scheme did not always allow to easily overcome the high number of unexpected practical problems. A major deficit identified during the project was a general trend in Africa to underestimate the role of research for the development of the continent. Most universities focus on teaching applied sciences, which is without doubt important to cover the market need for qualified staff in the rapidly growing African industries. However, this makes it unattractive for highly qualified performers to conduct research on the continent. Furthermore this leads to the situation that the curricula can only contain second hand knowledge. In order to attract international high level researchers, it is suggested to install multi-national regional excellence research centres that only promote PhD and post-doc research on a level that can cope with highest international excellence. High level research is often perceived as not capable of focusing on immediate actual problems that many African economies have to cope with.. However, it is considered to be very sustainable in terms of autonomy and mastering future challenges.
The aim of this project is to get deeper insight into the fatigue behaviour of concrete under cyclic compressive loading. It focuses on the evaluation and modelling of the entire damage process during life-cycle by means of various non-destructive measuring techniques. In numerous tests on cylinders h/d = 30/10 cm under different cyclic loading conditions, the crack development and the damage evolution are monitored using acoustic emission analysis and ultrasonic velocity measurement. The final aim will be the definition of a damage descriptor D based on experimental observations, which can be implemented into a numerical model on a meso-mechanical level.
Development and Validation of an Advanced Calculation Model for High Strength Concrete Columns Subjected to Fire Loading
Following a critical analysis of the material parameters of normal strength (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC) presented in Eurocode 2 the thermo-mechanical material parameters of one representative HSC were identified. Using these parameters and based on an appropriate material model the behavior of HSC columns was simulated. The validation of the model was realized through real scale fire resistance tests on loaded columns of the same type of HSC as in the material identification tests. It was found that the strength as a characteristic parameter of the material model has to be identified on the basis of transient creep tests and not of stationary tests, respectively as realized usually for NSC. It could be shown that the structural behavior of the tested columns is overestimated if the numerical simulations are based on the material properties of HSC as proposed in. This feature is expressed especially through insufficient displacements.
An der Altstädter Brücke (Brandenburg a. d.

The size effect has its origin in fracture mechanics and describes the formation as well as propagation of cracks in brittle and solid materials in dependence of the specimen size. However, the size effect in concrete spalling describes the damage behaviour on a macroscopic scale for different sized specimens in case of fire. Concrete spalling is a very complex and yet not fully understood phenomenon. To reduce the effort of fire tests to analyse the spalling behaviour of concrete mixtures, this study investigates the susceptibility to spalling for six different concrete mixtures and three specimen sizes. The sizes were divided in full scale slabs (1.8 m x 1.2 m x 0.3 m), intermediate scale cuboids (0.6 m x 0.6 m x 0.3 m) and small scale cylinders (Ø0.15 m x 0.3 m). For this purpose, a novel test set-up was built to test six intermediate scale or twelve small scale specimens simultaneously to ensure a similar heating regime for every specimen. All specimens were fire exposed on one side and remained unrestrained. A size effect occurred for four of the six concrete mixtures. Compared to the full scale specimens the spalling was reduced significantly for all smaller specimen sizes. Additionally, spalling did not occur for the small scale specimens. The results show that the specimen size is an essential parameter to investigate the susceptibility to spalling of a concrete mixture. For future investigations the testing conditions must be adjusted for the intermediate scale specimens to recreate the conditions of the slabs.
The current knowledge about fatigue behavior of concrete is still incomplete. This concerns especially the progress of fatigue which precedes the fatigue failure. Therefore, the process of fatigue itself under cyclic compressive loading was investigated in a systematic and comprehensive way. The aim of this investigation was to obtain a deeper insight and to provide a better understanding of the damage process occurring within the material during fatigue loading. Concrete cylinders were tested with a number of cycles to failure between 106 and 107. To investigate macroscopic and microscopic changes in the material, various methods of non-destructive and destructive testing were used. One main result was, in contrast to other authors, that the investigated changes in macroscopic material behavior could not be explained only by a development of micro-cracks. The results indicated rather, that the related changes in the fatigue behavior are mainly a result of viscous processes in the hardened cement paste, similar to the processes of creep. Based on the experimental results a description of the possible processes was derived which take place in the material structure during fatigue loading and also leads to the observed macroscopic changes in the material behavior. In this context, the results have shown that in case of isotropic material behavior a stiffness reduction related to a scalar value could not capture the damage effect on the stress-strain-relationship caused by fatigue.
Self-compacting concrete typically contains a higher content of powder materials than normal concrete. Furthermore it is assumed that the use of superplasticizers yields a more homogenous microstructure in the hardened paste. Both aspects generate a very dense microstructure, which can be assumed to cause material behaviour that differs from than normal concrete when it is exposed to elevated temperatures. However, the paste volumes in SCC can vary significantly based on the mixture composition. At a low paste volumes SCC can be very similar to normal concrete at hardened state while it can vary greatly at higher paste volumes. Since the high temperature behaviour of concrete is strongly affected by the different physical behaviour of the paste and the aggregates, it is likely that the high temperature behaviour is consequently strongly affected by the ratio of these mixture components. In the present study different SCC mixtures were observed with similar mechanical properties, but with significantly differing paste to aggregate ratios. Based on observations of the heat evolution at the fire exposed surface and at different depths inside the specimens as well as based on photogrammetric observations of the spalled dimensions, the results indicate that with increasing paste volumes the heat conductivity is reduced and as a result concrete with higher paste to aggregate ratios shows less spalling.
There is a wide range of research worldwide on supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash and slag for substituting pure cement. Such materials are suitable to be considered in a cementitious system with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) due to their high pozzolanic properties. In addition, majority of the SCMs are said to significantly improve concrete properties especially in terms of increased strength and durability. Unfortunately, the production of such SCMs is not entirely eco-friendly and also limited to certain parts of the world, hence one has to look at alternative options.
The issue of availability of resources is a strong concept that is ever-increasing, and the use of more eco-friendly SCMs in a cementitious system is furthermore attractive. Hence this paper addresses the use of eco-friendly SCMs in concrete such as rice husk ash (RHA). Despite the fact that extensive research has been done on this material, its application in a cementitious system to obtain sufficient concrete properties is still rather limited. In a country like Tanzania, high strength concrete construction is applicable in special construction cases but certainly not a high priority. Majority of construction is still undertaken using normal strength concrete. In a ternary cementitious system consisting of OPC, RHA and other readily available resources such as limestone filler (LSF), normal strength concrete can still be produced having good performance and suitable for regular on-site construction. This paper explains a possible application of obtaining sufficient concrete properties from the available resources.
Industrial wastes (bottom ash, crushed concrete fines, filter residue, paper ash and lignite fly ash) have potential for use in building materials, for instance as raw materials for clinker production, as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) or mineral additions in concrete. The properties of the products are dependent on the reactivity of the waste materials used, which can be classified as inert, latent hydraulic or pozzolanic. In this study, waste materials were first characterised. This was followed by theoretical considerations of the mentioned application options. Experiments were limited to evaluation of potential as SCMs and, for this purpose, activity index measurements and calorimetric and thermogravimetric analyses were performed. Finally, the synergetic effects of various waste materials were considered. Paper ash (calcium oxide source) and filter residue (amorphous silicon dioxide source) showed the best prospects for use as cementitious material components.
Safety measures like tunnel emergency Ventilation Systems cause high financial costs. Hence, safety measures have to be chosen with the focus on the expected reduction of the consequences like fatalities or damage on structures and in conjunction with the investments. Since 2004, the European directive EU 2004/54/EC proposes therefore the application of risk assessments. Because the EU directive provides only few legal requirements on risk assessments, the methodologies developed on this basis have large differences. After one decade of intensive research, the comparative study now highlights common aspects and differences of several methodologies.
The cement and concrete market in East, Central and Southern Africa is highly fragmented. The concrete industry in this area consists of multiple parties, including producers and suppliers of construction materials, formal and informal contractors, engineers and architects, unions of trades persons and workmen, governmental bodies and formal institutions of research and education. All these institutions mostly do not interact adequately, which makes building with cementitious materials susceptible to damage and failures. Completely opposed to the situation in Europe or North America, cement in Africa is often unaffordable, while manpower is cheap, which results in a questionable economisation of cement. Typically, there is not sufficient awareness of methods to sensibly reducing the cement content in concrete or replace Ordinary Portland Cement by adequate alternative materials. Research activities in this field of technology are often missing completely. Only few countries in the area, such as South Africa, are exempted from these issues.
This paper presents the SPIN project, which is a joint project of a consortium of 8 African and 3 European partners within the ACP Science and Technology Programme. The project is funded by the EC and ACP Secretariat is the project body. The main objective of the current project is to strengthen the cement and concrete industry in the East and Central African regions. The project shall generate reasonable solution strategies to implement clean, safe and sustainable cement and concrete technology on the African continent, including general and specific guidelines for sensible application. Furthermore it shall be the kick-off for future projects, research activities and the world-wide expansion of a European-African network.
The paper addresses special problems the cement and concrete market in Eastern, Central and Southern African countries has to face. Several options are presented in detail, which shall help overcoming the current situation. Customized solutions for the African market include rational methods for reducing the amount of cement used and the replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement with cheaper alternatives. The use of recycled concrete through a new and economically effective method, as well as the opportunity of using locally available resources is also discussed.

Methodologies on fire risk analysis in road tunnels consider numerous factors affecting risks (risk indicators) and express the results by risk measures. But only few comprehensive studies on effects of risk indicators on risk measures are available. For this reason, this study quantifies the effects and highlights the most important risk indicators with the aim to Support further developments in risk analysis. Therefore, a system model of a road tunnel was developed to determine the risk measures.
The system model can be divided into three parts: the fire part connected to the fire model Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS); the evacuation part connected to the evacuation model FDS+Evac; and the frequency part connected to a model to calculate the frequency of fires. This study shows that the parts of the system model (and their most important risk indicators) affect the risk measures in the following order: first, fire part (maximum heat release rate); second, evacuation part (maximum preevacuation time); and, third, frequency part (specific frequency of fire). The plausibility of These results is discussed with view to experiences from experimental studies and past fire incidents.
Conclusively, further research can focus on these most important risk indicators with the aim to optimise risk analysis.
Concrete spalling due to fire exposure is often defined as the sudden detachment of fragments from a concrete surface. It can be quantified by various parameters of which weight loss and spalling depth are the most common ones. The risk of spalling is influenced by many factors such as concrete composition, heating rate and applied testing methods. A reduced scale testing method should be developed to analyse the spalling behaviour and to understand its effectiveness in more detail. As a subsection of this development, this study aimed to analyse the effect of different-sized, circular heated areas in semi full-scale fire tests. Therefore, vermiculite slabs with varying cut-outs in their centre were placed between a specimen made of a spalling-sensitive concrete and the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber was heated following a standard fire curve. Our experimental results show that the thermal expansion inside of equal-sized specimens is strongly dependent on the size of the heated area. In addition, this area also affects thermal stresses. They decrease as a result of lower temperature gradients for tests with smaller unheated boundary areas. Apart from this, the analysis of fragments shows no correlation between their relative volume distribution and the heated area.
Fatigue is of relevance not only for metals but also for concrete. The current knowledge about fatigue behaviour of concrete is, however, incomplete. This concerns especially the progress of fatigue which precedes the fatigue failure. Some macroscopic effects of this process are well known but the governing material changes behind them are still less studied. The focus of the present contribution lay on a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the fatigue process under cyclic compressive loading. The aim was to obtain a deeper insight and to provide a better understanding of the damage process in the material. Cylindrical specimens were tested with a number of cycles to failure between 106 and 107. Various methods of non-destructive and destructive testing were used to investigate macroscopic and microscopic changes in the material. One main result was that the changes in the macroscopic material behaviour could not be explained only by the development of micro cracks. The results indicated that the related changes in the fatigue behaviour originate rather from viscous processes in the cement stone, similar to the process of creep. A sound description of the possible processes was derived from the obtained experimental results which concerns material structure during fatigue loading. It has been shown that in case of isotropic material behaviour a stiffness reduction related to a scalar value could not capture the damage effect on the stress-strain relationship caused by fatigue.
The modeling and prediction of the behavior of reinforced concrete under impact load is still an engineering challenge. The scientific community has put a lot of effort into the development of this knowledge, especially after the unfortunate events of 09/11 in Manhattan. The main concern is with nuclear power plants and how to design structures that can withstand such extreme situations. An experimental investigation has been carried out to collect fundamental data and to develop a deeper understanding of the effect of impact damage on the load capacity of concrete plates. The paper presents the process on the definition of procedures and the first results of an experimental investigation on the damage and residual load capacity of reinforced concrete plates after impact load. Two types of reinforced concrete plates measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.3 m were subjected to the impact of a flat-nose hard projectile. The two types were casted with the same reinforcement and 80 or 40 MPa concrete. After the impact, the plates go through planar tomography, visual inspection and an ultimate load capacity test. The results showed that the planar tomography can be used for the assessment of internal damage on concrete plates, as long as the number of scans in each direction is more than four. The visual inspection gave a good. The formation of cone cracking after the impact load showed the highest influence on the remaining load capacity of the concrete plates. More plates will be tested to confirm the indications at different damage conditions.
Fires in road tunnels constitute complex scenarios with interactions between the fire, tunnel users and safety measures. More and more methodologies for risk analysis quantify the consequences of these scenarios with complex models. Examples for complex models are the computational fluid dynamics model Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and the microscopic evacuation model FDS+Evac. However, the high computational effort of complex models often limits the number of scenarios in practice. To balance this drawback, the scenarios are often simplified. Accordingly, there is a challenge to consider complex scenarios in risk analysis.
To face this challenge, we improved the metamodel used in the methodology for risk analysis presented on ISTSS 2016. In general, a metamodel quickly interpolates the consequences of few scenarios simulated with the complex models to a large number of arbitrary scenarios used in risk analysis. Now, our metamodel consists of the projection array-based design, the moving least squares method, and the prediction interval to quantify the metamodel uncertainty. Additionally, we adapted the projection array-based design in two ways: the focus of the sequential refinement on regions with high metamodel uncertainties; and the combination of two experimental designs for FDS and FDS+Evac.
To scrutinise the metamodel, we analysed the effects of three sequential refinement steps on the metamodel itself and on the results of risk analysis. We observed convergence in both after the second step (ten scenarios in FDS, 192 scenarios in FDS+Evac). In comparison to ISTSS 2016, we then ran 20 scenarios in FDS and 800 scenarios in FDS+Evac. Thus, we reduced the number of scenarios remarkably with the improved metamodel. In conclusion, we can now efficiently integrate complex scenarios in risk analysis. We further emphasise that the metamodel is broadly applicable on various experimental or modelling issues in fire safety engineering.
Planar tomography and numerical analysis for damage characterization of impact loaded RC plates
(2020)
The damage analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) is of high interest for reasons of effective maintenance and structural safe-ty of buildings. The damage structures of RC plates loaded by an impact were investigated, applying X-ray planar tomogra-phy and finite element method (FEM). Planar tomography allows getting three-dimensional information of the RC elements and the damage including crack, spalling and scabbing. The FEM model validated on the tomography data justifies the appli-cation for further predictions of the damage description. In this study, we investigated concrete plates of three different thick-ness subjected to impacts at different low- and medium-velocity, whereby the used impactor had a flat tip, which resulted in small penetrations on the front side and scabbing on the rear side. In order to quantify the damage, the damage volume and its distribution through the plate were computed and the correlations between degree of damage and impact velocity were found out.
Based on methane from renewable resources, LNG is an alternative fuel for heavy and long-distance traffic in land transport. Contrary to its positive properties, the fuel contains risks from an explosion and extremely low temperatures for personal and infrastructure safety. CFD-models are suitable for doing risk analyses for arbitrary scenarios. For examining how to model for risk research the dispersion of LNG-vapor, this paper contains a model variant study, with an evaluation by experiments.
This paper describes the use of the CFD-code ANSYS Fluent for simulating experiments of the ‘LNG Safety Program Phase II‘. The content of the well-documented experiments was the research of the vaporization rate of LNG on land and the dispersion of LNG-vapor in the air. Based on the comparison to two experiments, overall 12 CFD-model variants with varying thermal and turbulence parameters were examined how they affect the transient LNG-vapor dispersion in air.
The definition of turbulence-boundary-condition at the domain borders had the biggest impact on modeling, followed by the turbulence model. The most accurate model variant had been applied for observing the spreading behavior of LNG-vapor in the air after evaporation on land and analyzing the influence of the LNG-composition to the dispersion. The results show that the mixture of LNG-vapor and the air in the free field is cooler than the ambient air and spreads like a heavy gas on the ground.
This paper presents the continuous dynamic measurements of an aging prestressed box-beam bridge during the period from 2000 to 2013, which consists of dynamic properties and environmental/operational factors, as well as the Variation of the extracted health features after removing the environmental/operational effects. Firstly, the variations of frequency estimates, temperatures and traffic loads from 2000 to 2013 are described. Subsequently, correlation analysis between them indicates the nonlinear influences of the temperature on the frequency estimates. The Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) method is used to remove the environmental/operational effects and the health index is proposed by performing the Novelty Detection analysis of the residual errors. Finally, the variations of the health index may indicate clear structural modifications that can be also characterized by the long term monitoring of the dynamic strain in the prestressed cable.
The maintenance of the transport infrastructures and their further development are going to remain focal points for investment and research in Germany in future. According to the latest development forecasts made by both the federal government and Deutsche Bahn, even if rail´s percentage share of the market were to remain unchanged, growth of around 50% would be expected in the next ten years, especially in freight traffic. This growth is necessitating considerable development both in the technical design of the tracks and in the abatement of the noise and vibration caused by railway traffic.
Spalling of concrete due to fire exposure can lead to severe damage of building components. It is a much discussed subject in structural engineering and not yet completely understood. Generally, it is assumed that thermohydraulic and thermomechanical processes induce tensile stresses in the concrete. Furthermore, the tensile strength of concrete is reduced due to increasing temperatures. The combination of an increasing tensile stress and a decreasing tensile strength result in the occurrence of explosive spalling. The spalling behaviour of concrete is influenced by many parameters, for instance the water cement ratio, porosity, permeability of concrete as well, the presence of steel reinforcement and polypropylene fibres, also the size and geometry of the fire exposed area. Within the current research project at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und prüfung (BAM), the susceptibility to spalling of six different concrete mixtures is analysed to quantify the size effect using small scale, intermediate scale and full scale tests. A special fire test setup was built to test specimens simultaneously to enable a better comparability. All specimens are tested without additional mechanical load and unrestraint to prevent external induced cracking at the fire exposed site. Thermocouples are used to measure in situ the temperature distribution as an indication on the thermal degradation of the concrete during the fire tests. Afterwards the maximum spalling depth and the damaged area of the specimen are illustrated by a photogrammetric measurement system. The contribution to the spalling workshop presents the results of four concrete mixtures tested in intermediate-scale and full-scale fire tests. The comparisons are based on the concrete temperature as well as the obtained photogrammetric data. The results show that the spalling depth and the spalling area are significantly affected by the size of the fire exposed area.
Prediction of dynamic effects of reinforced concrete structures under impact loading is a technical challenge. This is a consequence of the great variability of the physical properties resulting from the wide adaptability of reinforced concrete and a consequence of the wide range of impact loading. Experiments and numerical investigations are normally used on a small scale to address the problem. In this paper, impact tests on reinforced conrete plates with the lateral dimensions of 1.5 m x 1.5 m and a thickness of 30 cm are presented. In bending reinforcement, besides the velocity two properties are varied, the diameter and the spatial distribution of the rebars. Experiments are performed at the Otto-Mohr-Laboratory of the Institute of Concrete Structures of the Technische Universit¨at Dresden. Due to the accelerated fall of the impactor the velocity ranges between 20 and 70 m/s. In addition to the measured quantities such as bearing forces, accelerations are also measured at 4 different positions on and under the plate, as well as the deflection at several positions. The measured data are used for the analysis of the damage form and the numerical examinations with the program Ansys Autodyn and the material model after Drucker-Prager.
Numerical investigations support the tests, with detailed analysis of individual effects. These numerical computations and the planar tomographic investigations were carried out at BAM in Berlin. With the help of planar tomographic evaluation, the damaged structure is
made visible and compared with the numerical results. Influences of the bending reinforcement are explained on the basis of damage evaluation in the local area and on selected measured values. In addition to the test evaluation, the tomographic and numerical methods are presented.
Severe mechanical fatigue conditions for worldwide proliferating windfarms are a Major challenge for high-performance concrete in towers, connecting joints and foundations of wind turbines. High-performance concrete offers potential for the application in offshore windfarms, not only regarding its good mechanical, but also chemical resistivity due to low diffusivity in the highly densified microstructure. For a more reliable fatigue assessment, monitoring based on nondestructive testing can be a valuable complement to design rules. Both approaches demand reliable experimental data, information about scalability and the development of standardized testing methods. This article presents results of an ongoing research program of BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung), which is a part of a joint national project (WinConFat) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The subproject implemented by BAM examines the fatigue behavior in dependence of size and slenderness for varying concrete strength at different stress levels. Besides fatigue strength, nondestructive testing is carried out additionally.
Methods used are strain measurement and ultrasonic testing. The change of strain, stiffness and ultrasonic pulse velocity in the fatigue process is discussed. Results disclose a deeper insight into the damage process under cyclic loading of high-performance concrete and contribute to improve nondestructive monitoring.
Productivity and sustainability are key factors for the technical development of the construction sector during the next decades. Only a corresponding, goal-oriented and efficient combination of specifically developed construction materials and techniques based on innovative digital technologies and ideas will contribute to the huge societal challenges of the future. On a material level, sustainability in concrete production stands for the use of alternative binders, aggregates and reinforcing fibres in combination with bio-based additives to produce robust mixtures with a minimized CO2-footprint. On a constructional level, the focus will be on reducing manpower on site by automated techniques like additive manufacturing and by an increased use of prefabricated elements up to modular room cells, accompanied by innovative methods for the re-use of constructional elements, reduction of supplementary constructions and digitally optimized site logistics. This presentation will discuss recent developments in these fields, as well as upcoming ideas.
Polysaccharides are important rheology modifying admixtures in the building material sector.
The use of starch is becoming increasingly important, due to many ecological and economic advantages. In the construction sector, starch ethers are being used as thickeners and as means to increase the yield stress. The starch ethers that are available on the market differ in
their behaviour, which can vary greatly depending upon the binder system and mortar composition, e.g. solid volume content, binder type, additional admixtures. In view of the limited knowledge about the influence of molecular modifications associated with cement based systems, some fundamental rheological functional mechanisms were analysed in this study. The differently modified starch ethers used were derived from potatoes. They varied in their charges and degrees of hydroxypropylation. The setting and the flow behaviour of all examined variations
of starch ethers were analysed in cement pastes. In order to illustrate the effects of the starch ethers that were used, the water-cement ratio (w/c) was held constant in all the mixtures [Schmidt 2012]. The results indicated significant differences in setting and flow behaviour.
Rice husk as (RHA) is an eco-friendly material, which can be used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in cement and concrete. Due to the high water demand for the material, superplasticizers (SPs) are essential to improve the performance. However, the interaction between the SPs and RHA systems is limited. This paper investigates the interaction of the binders with three SPs, i.e. two polycarboxylate ethers (PCEs) and one lignosulphonate (LS). The investigations are performed on blended systems of mortar containing various percentages of RHA and limestone powder (LSP). LSP is used in this research to improve the workability of the mortar. The results from the zeta potential (ZP) shows that the SPs are extremely dependent on the pH of the suspension. At higher pH values such as in a cementitious system, the ZP becomes less negative indicating that the ions in the suspension interact with the carboxyl groups in the backbone of the polymers thus reducing the surface charges of the SP. The mini-slump flow shows that the workability of the blended mortar systems is significantly improved with the addition of SPs. LS systems with increasing RHA is observed to have similar workability as the control mix over time. The compressive strength test results show increased strength for all mortar specimens with added RHA and LSP at later ages.
Within a current research project which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) the influence of the size and the geometry of specimens on the spalling result in fire tests is going to be investigated at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM). This paper describes some preliminary results and a newly developed test setup. The novel setup enables the efficient and precise quantification of spalling by using a special photogrammetric measurement system.
Superplasticizers (SPs) have been employed in concrete technology for decades to improve the workability of concrete in its fresh state. The addition of SPs in cement-based systems affects the early properties. Although the interaction of the cement particles with various SPs has been extensively researched, there still exists limited research on the interaction of SPs with supplementary cementitious materials such as rice husk ash (RHA). This paper investigates the rheological properties and early hydration kinetics of RHA-blended systems with three types of SPs, a polycarboxylate ether (PCE) and two lignosulphonates (LS-acc and LS-ret). In rheological properties, the addition of SP causes an initial improvement of workability as the yield stress is significantly reduced. The pastes with PCE and LS-acc show a slight increase of yield stress over time whereas pastes with LS-ret tend to lower the yield stress slightly over time, further improving the workability. Without SP, pastes with RHA show a lower yield stress but an increase in plastic viscosity as cement is further replaced with RHA. The addition of the LS SPs is observed to lower the plastic viscosity but remains constant with further replacement of cement with RHA. This indicates that LS SPs further adsorbs on RHA particles and hydration products produced causing dispersion of the particles
within the system. In early hydration kinetics, pastes with PCE retard hydration and the degree of retardation is further increased with LS SPs. In the presence of RHA, the retardation of LS SP systems is significantly reduced. The pastes with PCE show more ettringite in the SEM micrographs, but is observed to be shorter needles. This indicates an initial good workability for PCE. However, C-S-H and CH were observed to be low in quantity, whereby the pastes with LS show more nucleation sites for C-S-H and CH. The ettringite needles in the LS systems were similar in quantity and more elongated in some cases but not abundant as in the PCE systems.
The worldwide spread of windfarms brings new challenges, especially for concrete structures as a part of towers, connecting joints and foundations of wind turbines. High-cyclic loadings in such structures lead to a high relevance of the subject of fatigue. A proper assessment of the fatigue strength of concrete demands therefore a basis of reliable experimental data and the development of standardized testing methods. This article presents first results of an ongoing research program of BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung) which is a part of a joint project (WinConFat) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The subproject investigates the effects of size and slenderness of the specimens on the fatigue behaviour of high strength concrete at different stress levels. Not only the fatigue strength, but also the fatigue process itself is monitored by means of several measurement methods. Strain measurements are used to calculate the load dependent elastic modulus in the fatigue hysteresis as indicators for fatigue development. Furthermore, the application of non-destructive methods like acoustic emission analysis and ultrasonic measurement in laboratory tests gives a deeper insight into damage processes under cyclic loading. The results shall be used to improve design rules for concrete members under fatigue load and to develop or improve non-destructive techniques for in-service structural health monitoring.
Identifying optimal inspection and repair strategies for offshore jacket structures is a challenging task. We pre-sent an approach, which is based on recent developments in the field of risk-based operation and maintenance planning at the structural system level. The approach utilizes heuristics to define inspection and repair strate-gies at the system level and to reduce the search space of possible strategies. For each defined strategy, the expected service life cost of inspection, repair and failure is evaluated based on simulated inspection and re-pair histories. Subset simulation is applied to compute the conditional repair and failure probabilities required for this analysis. It also forms the basis for simulating inspection and repair histories. The strategy that mini-mizes the expected service life cost is the optimal one in the set of pre-selected strategies. The underlying condition and performance model accounts for the stochastic dependence among the deterioration states of the different structural elements and the structural redundancy. The approach is demonstrated in a case study considering a jacket-type frame. In this study, we essentially vary the inspection interval, the minimum num-ber of inspected components and the target reliability, and identify the combination that minimizes the ex-pected total service life cost.
A novel method for risk-based optimization of inspection and repair strategies for deteriorating structural systems has recently been proposed. The method defines heuristics at the system level to reduce the number of possible strategies. For each defined strategy, it computes the updated system failure probability conditional on simulated inspection and repair histories, and evaluates the associated costs and risk. The expected total service life costs and risk for a strategy are finally determined using Monte Carlo simulation. The optimal strategy minimizes the expected total service life costs and risk. We intend to adopt this approach to optimize inspection, monitoring and repair activities for offshore wind park support structures. As a first step, we simulate – in analogy to an offshore wind park – the service life performance of an inspected group of jacket-type frames. The performance is quantified in terms of the group’s system failure probability conditional on simulated inspection and repair histories. The underlying system model accounts for the structural redundancy of the frames and the interdependence among their failure events due to similar loading conditions. The model also captures stochastic dependence among the deterioration states of the frames. As part of the simulation process the a-priori unknown outcome of any planned inspection is generated conditional on the outcome of all previous inspections.
The structural integrity of outer reinforced concrete (RC) containments of nuclear power plants provides an essential shield against external hazards. If this containment is damaged by an impact event, such as an aircraft crash, the question arises to which degree the reinforced concrete containment still has its protective capability. This concerns both purely structural protection and protection against liquids penetrating the interior of the containment. Due to the dimensions of the containment structures, it is difficult to perform real scale impact experiments, so in the past decades plate geometries at medium scale have been used for investigations. Detailed investigations on the structural behaviour of RC members or RC plates subjected to impact loading have already been presented in Just et al., Hering, Hering et al., Bracklow et al., Hille et al. and Nerger et al.
The following investigations deal with the single and multiple impact event (first hard impact and/or subsequent soft impact) on a RC specimen, which provides the basis for further investigations. A description of the test setup and the test procedure as well as a presentation of the test results from the impact tests are provided.
Furthermore, the experimental program is presented, which the damaged RC specimens are to undergo to deal with the question of how much the impact-damaged RC structure has become permeable to liquid media, such as water and kerosene, depending on the intensity of the impact. The aim of these following investigations is to develop a test setup that can be applied to investigate the liquid penetration behaviour (LPB) of small, medium, and large-scale RC members.
In addition to the liquid penetration experiments, the damaged specimens are to be examined by planar tomography to obtain the damage inside the specimen. The combination of damaging event, fluid penetration behaviour and tomography should enable a comprehensive understanding of the damage to the RC specimen.
