Zeolite synthesis was studied using two silica rich filtration residues (FR 1 and FR 2) as Si-source
and sodium aluminate in a direct synthesis at 60°C at strong alkaline conditions (8 M - 16 M NaOH).
In addition to these one-pot syntheses, a two-step process was investigated. Here, an alkaline digestion
of FR at 60°C was followed by gel precipitation with sodium aluminate and gel crystallization
under usual conditions of 80°C - 90°C. The results show that the substitution of chemical
reagent sodium silicate by a waste material like FR as Si-source is possible but requires fine tuning
of the reaction conditions as zeolite crystallization is a process under kinetic control. The
solubility behaviour and impurities of the inserted filtration residues strongly influenced the
course of reaction. Thus zeolites like hydrosodalite or intermediate zeolite between cancrinite
and sodalite, or zeolite NaA or Z-21 in cocrystallization with hydrosodalite could be observed in
the one pot syntheses already in a short time interval between 1 - 4 h depending on the alkalinity.
The two step process yield to zeolites NaA and NaX in very good quality. The reaction process of FR
in both reaction methods was characterized by chemical analyses, X-ray powder diffraction,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. Surface area
and water content of selected products were further characterized by the BET-method and by
thermogravimetry. Summing up the results, we can show that zeolite formation from filtration residues
is possible by several reaction procedures as model cases for a re-use of industrial waste
materials. Beside the importance for environmental protection, the reactions are of interest for
zeolite chemistry as the re-use of FR is possible under economically conditions of low energy consumption
at 60°C and short reaction periods.
Under environmental conditions water exists in all three classical States of matter: solid, liquid and gas. The water molecule is non-linear and therefore polar. In comparison with other liquids water has anomalous features; about 63 exceptional properties are recorded. This article starts with reviewing properties of water, typical occurrences and definitions such as relative and absolute humidity and moisture content.
Water is present everywhere in nature and engineering; it may be helpful or harmful. The survey concerns both: atmospheric hygrometry and usual measuring methods of the moisture content of solids and liquids as well as water Sorption. The determination of the atmospheric humidity is among the more difficult problems in metrology. In contrast, humidity determination of materials is simple; however the definition of the dry state is difficult. Because water is bound at and in solids and liquids in many different ways it tums out that the humidity content of materials is difficult to define and to measure accurately. We provide a survey on the measuring methods, describe the most important ones and discuss advantages and accuracy.
In the search for extraterrestrial water special remote measuring methods have been developed analysing the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation either of natural sources or produced by a probe and reflected. Spacious deposits have been detected photographically. In situ investigations are made using conventional methods.
With regard to the problems of measurements, Standardisation of measuring methods and procedures is required. There exist many institutions, which are engaged in investigating the use of water and standardising measuring methods. In tabular form, we give a survey on existing Standards.
Beside such well approved residues like fly ash, blast fumace slag, silica fume and crushed concrete orbrick, other materials, like waste incineration bottom ash, steel slag, biomass ash, industrial sludge or mixed demolition waste, bear the potential to be used in high-grade mineral building materials. However, sophisticated Processing technologies and progressive applications ofthe waste products are needed. The material efficiency has to be improved by further R&D activities. This paper Shows the activities ofthe working group “Saving Resources by Material Recycling” and presents research about the use of residues from industry, incineration processes and deconstruction for the production of high-grade mineral building materials.
As a result of their chemical and mineralogical characteristics, bottom ashes from municipal solid waste incinerators can, in principle, be used as aggregates in the production of normal strength concrete. However, because the ashes contain concrete-damaging components, such as chlorides, sulphates and organic compounds, or excessive quantities of fines, aluminium and waste glass, recycling becomes problematic. In particular, inclusions of aluminium in the ash particles and a glass content of about 15% cause considerable cracks and spalling in concrete specimens within a very short time. The harmful substances can be reduced or removed by additional treatments, such as upstream sieving and washing, waste glass separation, and lye treatment with sodium hydroxide solution. Tests on concretes with 232 mm bottom ash as coarse aggregates indicate that the quality of the ash is actually improved by the additional processing. Thus concretes with a compressive strength of C20/25 can easily be produced. Similar to concretes made with recycled aggregates, these concretes exhibit 15% lower compressive strength and E-modulus but twice the porosity of control specimens containing exclusively natural sand and gravel. However, only those concretes that were made with ash with a low aluminium content as a result of lye treatment remained free of damage.
Modern municipal solid waste incinerator plants produce bottom ashes, which are used in building industry, especially as base course in road constructions. Because of a highly sophisticated reprocessing technique, the ashes Show a relatively stable composition, comparatively well defined properties and environmentally relevant Parameters below legal Limits. Due to its chemical and mineralogical characteristics, the bottom ash can in principle be used as Aggregate in the production of normal strength concrete. However, if the ash contains concrete damaging components Recycling becomes problematic.
To assess the use of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (MSWI bottom ash) as Aggregate in concrete, different additionally treated ashes were chemical and physical characterised. Furthermore, concrete specimens with bottom ash as aggregates were produced and their Engineering properties were studied.
Stone deterioration is the result of a complex interaction of external physical, chemical and biological forces with the mineralogical-petrophysical properties of the stone. With a better understanding of how these properties are linked to material behavior and durability, more effective measures for stone conservation can be developed. Studying these interactions in tuff is particularly complex due to the naturally high heterogeneity of tuff rocks.
The first aim of a current research project is to combine the results of recent and older studies on tuff deterioration. Furthermore, the literature overview is complemented by our own investigation of Weibern and Ettringen tuff, with a focus on pore structure characteristics.
The interaction of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (MSWI bottom ash), when utilized as an aggregate in concrete, with the cement matrix was investigated. The most prominent reaction observed in lab and field concrete was the formation of aluminium hydroxide and the release of hydrogen gas from aluminium grains reacting in the alkaline environment. The expansive aluminium reaction was identified as a main cause of extensive spalling on the concrete surface. Due to the higher content of bottle glass as part of the ash, in all samples, reaction products of an alkali-silica reaction (ASR) could be observed as well. However, damage due to ASR were less severe than those caused by the aluminium reaction. The expansion rates were low and only a few of the lab samples showed cracking. Microstructural analysis of the samples indicated clearly that a large quantity of the alkali-silica gel which was formed was accommodated in the pores and voids without exerting any strain on the material.
At present, heterogeneous and fine-grained masonry rubble can only be recycled at very low level. To overcome this limitation, the material was employed as feedstock for the production of lightweight aggregates in a thermal process similar to that used in the manufacture of expanded clay and expanded slate. To that end, the fundamental suitability of masonry rubble as a raw material was evaluated. Experiments were carried out which indicated that lightweight granules with defined, adjustable properties similar to those of natural-material-based aggregates could be manufactured from masonry rubble. Structural lightweight concretes produced with these secondary aggregates achieved comparable performance to lightweight concretes produced with conventional expanded clay. Lightweight recycled building material aggregates represent a product that hardly requires any primary resources in its manufacture. In principle, the technique also seems to be well suited for high-quality recycling of other mineral waste materials.
Sustainable evaluation - concept to assess the applicability of secondary aggregates in concrete
(2012)
Sustainable evaluation - concept to assess the applicability of secondary aggregates in concrete
(2011)
Nowadays there are several applications of mineral recycling materials and residues. At present an assessment method for the use of secondary raw materials, which considers sustainability aspects, does not exist. In the framework of the German DAfStb/BMBF research project “Sustainable Building with Concrete” an assessment concept was developed. It includes the following four assessment steps: I. Basic considerations, II. Advantages for sustainable construction, III. Alternative paths for application, and IV. Sensitivity analysis. The concept was developed on the basis of recycled concrete aggregates, which are already used according to German standards.
Afterwards, it was applied and verified by the evaluation of the utilisation of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ashes (referred to MSWI bottom ashes).
Lightweight granules are mineral, spherical and porous particles with bulk density less than 2000 kg m . New types of lightweight granules are made from masonry -3 rubble as an alternative to the commonly used expanded clay and shale. They are produced in a multistage manufacturing process by thermal or hydrothermal treatment. Studies of the microstructure of the new lightweight granules are very important to optimise the engineering properties with regard to different applications from lightweight concrete to planting substrates and wastewater treatment. Here, the results of porosity and pore structure measurements are presented. Characteristic samples with different bulk densities of both thermally and hydrothermally hardened granules have been analysed by means of various methods.
European and Germany regulations demand an elaborate waste management to save natural resources, reduce waste volumes deposited at landfills and enhance sustainable development by recycling of various residues. Research into the use of these materials in the construction sector and other fields is a positive step forward in achieving these objectives. BAM shares its latest findings.
Today modern reprocessing techniques lead to materials, which bear the potential to be used as aggregates or additives in mineral building materials. Because of highly sophisticated reprocessing techniques residues with relatively stable composition over a certain range and relatively defined properties can be produced. At the same time, new German and European regulations demand a waste management to decrease waste volume stored at landfills to save natural resources and to enhance sustainable development by recycling of diverse residues. This paper shows the activities of the working group 'Saving Resources by Material Recycling'.

Reaction products and strength development of wastepaper sludge ash and the influence of alkalis
(2014)
Wastepaper sludge ash (WSA) from a newsprint paper mill was investigated for its mineralogical composition and its reaction products and strength development after activation with water and sodium and potassium hydroxide solutions. The results showed the WSA to consist of calcite, free lime, gehlenite, tricalcium aluminate, belite, talc, quartz and probably a glassy phase. The principle reaction product was monocarboaluminate (CO3–AFm) for the water- as well as for the alkali-activated WSA. Formation of monocarboaluminate and strength gain was more rapid for the alkali-activated WSA until 1 day of curing. However, afterwards reactions proceeded much slower when alkali solutions were used, leading to an about twice as high compressive strength for water-activated WSA mortars after 28 days of curing. The observed behavior is tentatively ascribed to a less uniform microstructure of the alkali-activated WSA. Significant differences between NaOH- and the KOH-activated WSA were not observed.
