A new method has been developed for the measurement of sulfur in gas oils using a high pressure asher (HPA) for sample digestion. This, combined with a calibrated enriched isotopic reference material, and high precision mass spectrometry, makes it a powerful tool for an accurate and precise determination of the sulfur content in fossil fuels. The method described here was one of the methods used in the certification of the candidate reference materials BCR-104R, BCR-671 and BCR-672. Approximately 0.2 g of the gas oil samples were spiked with the spike isotopic reference material IRMM-646, which is enriched in 34S, and combusted in an HPA using nitric acid. The isotopes of sulfur were measured as arsenic monosulfides (AsS+) using a thermal ionization mass spectrometer equipped with a Faraday detector. The total uncertainty of the sulfur content (k = 2) is about 1%. The certified reference materials NIST SRM-2724b and NIST SRM-1619b and BCR-105 were used as part of the method validation work. The mass content of sulfur in BCR-104R was measured to be 1014 µg g-1, BCR-671 has 450 µg g-1 sulfur and BCR-672 shows a sulfur mass content of 201 µg g-1. The sulfur content of the candidate reference materials is homogeneous for the sample size used.
A comparison of high accuracy methods for the analysis of total sulfur in gas oils by three metrology institutes is described. The work contains a comparison of three different aspects of the analysis: sample digestion, instrumental measurement and isotope dilution strategies.
Thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) in combination with high pressure asher (HPA) or Carius tube digestion has traditionally been used for such high accuracy analysis. However, this paper demonstrates that the faster, less laborious technique of ICP-MS in combination with microwave digestion is equally capable. Results from the comparison experiments show excellent agreement for fuel samples containing sulfur concentrations in the range 11200 µg g-1. This excellent agreement across the different sample preparation, measurement and isotope dilution techniques has been exploited in the certification of two new diesel fuel reference materials.
The present paper describes the certification of the amount content of Cd, Cr and Pb in two different polyethylene materials within the third phase of the Polyethylene Elemental Reference Material (PERM) project. The analytical procedure to establish the reference values for Cd, Cr and Pb amount contents in these materials is based on isotope dilution mass spectrometry used as a primary method of measurement. Cd and Pb were measured with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and Cr with positive thermal ionization-mass spectrometry. The decomposition of the polymer matrix was carried out using a high pressure asher. Reference values for amount content, traceable to the SI-system, have been obtained for these three elements in both of the polyethylene samples of PERM. For each of the certified amount content values an uncertainty budget was calculated using the method of propagation of uncertainties according to ISO and EURACHEM guidelines. The measurement procedures, as well as the uncertainty calculations, are described for all three elements. In order to keep the whole certification process as transparent as possible, the preparations of various reagents and materials as well as the sample treatment and blending are described in detail. The mass spectrometry measurements and the data treatment are also explained carefully. The various sources of uncertainty present in the procedure are displayed in the uncertainty budgets. The obtained combined uncertainties for the amount content values were less than 2% relative (k=1) for all investigated elements. The amount contents were in the ?mol/kg range, corresponding to mg/kg levels.
A new setup for fast spatially resolved measurements of elemental trace amounts under total reflection conditions using a new colour X-ray camera is described. Samples prepared on conventional total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) reflectors were measured at BESSY II synchrotron. A spatial resolution of 50 × 50 µm² was obtained, while the required time for the investigation of a 10 × 10 mm² sample is 30 seconds. The set-up is up to 350 times faster than conventional X-ray fluorescence systems for elemental traces. The major components of the X-ray camera are polycapillary optics and a pn-CCD chip with an active area of 13 × 13 mm². This area is divided into 264 × 264 pixels of 48 × 48 µm². A full X-ray spectrum with a resolution of 152 eV @ 5.9 keV and a chip temperature of 246 K is recorded for each pixel. The chip has a read-out rate of 400 Hz.
Twelve different samples were analyzed for their water content by the classical oven-drying method and a commercial moisture analyzer. Nominal values have been set by Karl Fischer titration and gravimetry. The decomposition during the drying process of samples containing organic compounds was checked by thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometric and mass spectrometric detection. Summarizing all measurement results, the commercial moisture analyzer demonstrated an average bias for the determination of water contents, which is much smaller than the stated uncertainty and thus is negligible. Compared to the classical oven-drying method, the commercial moisture analyzer shows a smaller bias, more ease in handling and less time consumption per analysis. When validated by a reference procedure like Karl Fischer titration the commercial moisture analyzer is the method of choice for routine analysis.
For ten years µ-XRF (micro-focus X-ray fluorescence) analysis has been performed with SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive X-ray detector) so that non-destructive analysis of elements at trace level concentrations below 100 µg g-1 becomes possible. This can be considered as a valuable completion of the classical electron probe microanalysis by EDS, an analytical method 'suffering' from rather poor limits of detection in the range of one to two orders of magnitude higher than those of µ-XRF. Based on a representative actual application, namely analysis of RoHS relevant elements at trace concentration levels, the performance of the rather new analytical method with respect to its limits of detection is systematically evaluated. CRMs (certified reference materials) specially prepared to support the quantitative XRF analysis of RoHS relevant elements were employed. On the other side, based on calculations of µ-XRF spectra according to a recently developed physical model the optimization of the analytical performance is also successfully undertaken.
In this study the microscopic homogeneity of the newly developed plastic reference materials BAM H001-BAM H010 was investigated. The materials consist of an acrylonitryle-butadien-styrene terpolymer, doped with different amounts of the elements Br, Cd, Cr, Hg and Pb. For the quantitative determination of the degree of homogeneity, a procedure proposed by Kempenaers et al. (Fresenius J. Anal. Chem., 2001, 369, 733-737) was used. On every sample an extensive number of different points were analyzed and standard deviation for every element mentioned above was used to calculate a minimal sampling mass that is necessary to reach a certain level of uncertainty caused by inhomogeneity (mmin,5%). The experiments were taken out with synchrotron µ-XRF (SR µ-XRF) at BESSYII in Berlin and by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS). The calculated values for mmin,5% of both techniques showed comparable results for all elements. It could be shown that the materials are suitable for calibration of micro analytic techniques if at least 64 µg are used.
Around 2.5 million tons of municipal sewage sludge (dry matter) are produced in Ger-many every year. The disposal or recycling of this mass often confronts plant operators with considerable problems. In addition to organic substances, sewage sludges also contain important inorganic nutrients that can be recycled. Due to the finite nature of phosphorus as a resource and in favor of natural material cycles, it makes sense to utilize the phosphorus bound in sewage sludge. Therefore, Phosphorus recycling from sewage sludge will be obligatory in Germany from 2029. However, the pollutants pre-sent in sewage sludge, such as heavy metals and organic trace pollutants, are prob-lematic. In many cases, the sewage sludge is incinerated, removing organic compo-nents, and leaving a mineral residue. Various processes exist for the reprocessing of sewage sludge ashes. Reliable analytics and process monitoring are required for all of them.
In this context, the first and most important task of BAM regarding new materials or processes is safety in technology and chemistry through validated and correct analyt-ics. Since there are no reference materials for sewage sludge ashes so far, it is not possible to make any statements about the extent to which the measured values of the comparative measuring methods are correct at all. Therefore, suitable, and representa-tive reference materials are indispensable for the validation of the measurement results and the quality assurance during the entire recycling process. Great care is required to select and prepare these reference materials. The reference materials must corre-spond in matrix to the samples that are to be investigated in the industrial process. An iron-rich and an aluminum-rich sewage sludge ash from mono-incineration plants were selected for this purpose. 10 kg of each sewage sludge ash were homogenized, char-acterized, and prepared. The main, minor and trace element compositions of the sew-age sludge ashes are determined by different measuring methods. The candidate ref-erence materials will be available as BAM-U200 und BAM-U201.
Knowing the exact nutrient composition of organic fertilizers is a prerequisite for their appropriate application to improve yield and to avoid environmental pollution by over-fertilization.
Traditional standard chemical analysis is cost and time-consuming and thus it is unsuitable for a rapid analysis before manure application. As a possible alternative, a handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer was tested to enable a fast, simultaneous, and on-site analysis of several elements.
A set of 62 liquid pig and cattle manures as well as biogas digestates were collected, intensively homogenized and analysed for the macro plant nutrients phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sulphur as well as the micro nutrients manganese, iron, copper, and zinc using the standard lab procedure. The effect of four different sample preparation steps (original, dried, filtered, and dried filter residues) on XRF measurement accuracy was examined. Therefore, XRF results were correlated with values of the reference analysis. The best R2 s for each element ranged from 0.64 to 0.92. Comparing the four preparation steps, XRF results for dried samples showed good correlations (0.64 and 0.86) for all elements. XRF measurements using dried filter residues showed also good correlations with R2 s between 0.65 and 0.91 except for P, Mg, and Ca. In contrast, correlation Analysis for liquid samples (original and filtered) resulted in lower R2 s from 0.02 to 0.68, except for K (0.83 and 0.87, respectively). Based on these results, it can be concluded that handheld XRF is a promising measuring system for element analysis in manures and digestates.
