Long-term experiences with a cathodic protection system for steel in concrete
In 1986 in Germany the first cathodic protection system for reinforced concrete structures was put into service. Installation, commissioning and the regular monitoring were scientifically supported.
Due to necessary traffic related reconstruction measures the system was switch off after 15 years of service. Investigations carried out during that period should verify laboratory test results at a real structure and furthermore yield information on the long-term behaviour concerning durability, temperature dependence, potential distribution, chloride migration etc.
With increasing time of service the protection criteria could only be met by increasing the transformer rectifier voltage (the system worked in the constant voltage mode). Extensive investigations of the anode material (conductive polymer wire with a copper core) after 15 years of service showed that irreversible changes substantially decreased the polymer's conductivity limiting the functionality. Today, these kind of anodes are not used any more for the application in cathodic protection systems of reinforced concrete structures.

Corrosion damage at storage tanks for salt brine
A tank made of stainless steel type X2CrNiMo17-12-2 for intermediate storage of salt brine for cheese production revealed significant pitting corrosion effects shortly after commissioning although comparable units have shown positive long-term behaviour. By means of electrochemical laboratory tests it could be demonstrated that the observed pitting corrosion was caused by the use of an oxidizing agent for desinfection purposes.
For an assessment of the risk potential of existing structures where in the case of prestressing steel damage the load-bearing capacity could be significantly affected non-destructive testing techniques which enable reliable evaluation of the condition of the prestressing steels are of utmost importance. During the demolition of the Hohenzollerndamm bridge in Berlin where damage of prestressing wires due to hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking were found in former investigations parts of the girders of the bridge superstructure could be taken out. After non-destructive investigation by means of two testing techniques based on magnetic leakage flux measurement and one technique based on electromagnetic resonance measurement the single wires were inspected in order to verify the non-destructive testing results with respect to their reliability. From the results it can be concluded that areas with fractures of several wires could be detected by the two techniques based on magnetic leakage flux measurement.
