Analyzing damages at concrete structures due to physical, chemical, and mechanical exposures need the application of innovative non-destructive testing methods that are able to trace spatial changes of microstructures. Here, the utility of three different crack detection methods for the analysis of computed tomograms of various cementitious building materials is evaluated. Due to the lack of reference samples and standardized image quality evaluation procedures, the results are compared with manually segmented reference data sets. A specific question is how automatic crack detection can be used for the quantitative characterization of damage processes, such as crack length and volume. The crack detection methods have been integrated into a scientific visualization system that allows displaying the tomography images as well as presenting the results.

Wood is the material that has accompanied the whole development of mankind in various applications, for manufacturing tools and weapons, for buildings and constructions and also as fuel. It has various appearances and is subjected to decomposing changes, so there are sufficient arguments for non-destructive testing of wooden objects in the same way as is common practice with other technologically used materials. However, even today wood is rarely tested. Moreover, artefacts of cultural heritage containing wood are rare and delicate, so dismantling these for studying purposes is undesirable. Radiological inspection technologies are the methods of choice to provide a non-destructive insight. Interrogations of a specimen with various kinds of radiation provide different answers about their internal structures. High-quality detailed images are achievable with X-rays or gamma radiation in cases where heavy metals or other dense materials are not involved. Neutrons behave complementarily; they are avidly absorbed by light elements such as hydrogen on the one hand and yet are capable of easily penetrating heavy metals on the other. This provides an alternative for X-ray radiography and tomography when material characteristics are of primary interest rather than structural details, or when shielding with plates or sleeves of heavy metal severely impedes inspections with X-ray or gamma radiation technologies. However, due to the moderating effect of wooden samples it is essential to use fast neutrons for radiography and tomography of voluminous objects. Some typical examples described here will show the difference between neutron and X-ray photon-based radiographic technologies.
Precautions in the generation of surfaces from CT images should be the rule. Two different data sets of the bust of Nefertiti and additional data from an industrial CT scanner will show the conflicts that arise when defining a surface. The recent trend in CT is to extract surfaces from CT measurements which can compete with the accuracy of tactile measurements. As CT is complicated by artefacts, a lot of precautions need to be taken in order to get exact results. More errors are introduced, if the surface of an object made from different dense materials is calculated. A publication in April 2009 of "Radiology" dealt with the surface of the stone behind the stucco layer of the famous bust of the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti in the Ägytische Museum Berlin. Using this data, we will show the different problems that arise from inadequate image processing. Furthermore, a detailed comparison of the two CT measurements made 14 years apart is given. Conclusions: Respect the traps in virtual imaging.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The primary intention of construction materials research is to refer the durability of concrete members to a measurable parameter. Setting, shrinkage, and temperature deformations compromise the durability of high-performance concrete. The respective deformation measurement technology is becoming an indispensible method for the targeted and economic development of concrete mixtures with respect to durability. A flexible EFPI sensor enables the survey of early age deformations directly after placing the concrete. The paper deals with the sensor principle, investigations concerning in-situ referencing, and possible effects of the sensor on the matrix as well as its application in the field of materials research.

Integration of fiber reinforcement in high-performance cementitious materials has become widely applied in many fields of construction. One of the most investigated advantages of steel Fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is the deceleration of crack growth and hence its improved sustainability.
Additional benefits are associated with its structural properties, as fibers can significantly increase the ductility and the tensile strength of concrete. In some applications it is even possible to entirely replace the conventional reinforcement, leading to significant logistical and environmental benefits.
Fiber reinforcement can, however, have critical disadvantages and even hinder the Performance of concrete, since it can induce an anisotropic material behavior of the mixture if the fibers are not appropriately oriented. For a safe use of SFRC in the future, reliable non-destructive testing (NDT) methods need to be identified to assess the fibers’ orientation in hardened concrete. In this study,
ultrasonic material testing, electrical impedance testing, and X-ray computed tomography have been investigated for this purpose using specially produced samples with biased or random Fiber orientations. We demonstrate the capabilities of each of these NDT techniques for fiber orientation measurements and draw conclusions based on these results about the most promising areas for future research and development.
Targeting biomedical applications, Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) gyroid sheet-based structures were successfully manufactured for the first time by Electron Beam Melting in two different production Themes, i.e., inputting a zero (Wafer Theme) and a 200 µm (Melt Theme) wall thickness. Initial assumption was that in both cases, EBM manufacturing should yield the structures with similar mechanical properties as in a Wafer-mode, as wall thickness is determined by the minimal beam spot size of ca 200 µm. Their surface morphology, geometry, and mechanical properties were investigated by means of electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT), and uniaxial tests (both compression and tension). Application of different manufacturing Themes resulted in specimens with different wall thicknesses while quasi-elastic gradients for different Themes was found to be of 1.5 GPa, similar to the elastic modulus of human cortical bone tissue. The specific energy absorption at 50% strain was also similar for the two types of structures. Finite element simulations were also conducted to qualitatively analyze the deformation process and the stress distribution under mechanical load. Simulations demonstrated that in the elastic regime wall, regions oriented parallel to the load are primarily affected by deformation. We could conclude that gyroids manufactured in Wafer and Melt Themes are equally effective in mimicking mechanical properties of the bones.
Additively manufactured (AM) metallic sheet-based Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Structures (TPMSS) meet several requirements in both bio-medical and engineering fields: Tunable mechanical properties, low sensitivity to manufacturing defects, mechanical stability, and high energy absorption. However, they also present some challenges related to quality control, which can prevent their successful application. In fact, the optimization of the AM process is impossible without considering structural characteristics as manufacturing accuracy, internal defects, as well as surface topography and roughness. In this study, the quantitative non-destructive analysis of TPMSS manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V alloy by electron beam melting was performed by means of X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Several advanced image analysis workflows are presented to evaluate the effect of build orientation on wall thicknesses distribution, wall degradation, and surface roughness reduction due to the chemical etching of TPMSS. It is shown that the manufacturing accuracy differs for the structural elements printed parallel and orthogonal to the manufactured layers. Different strategies for chemical etching show different powder removal capabilities and both lead to the loss of material and hence the gradient of the wall thickness. This affects the mechanical performance under compression by reduction of the yield stress. The positive effect of the chemical etching is the reduction of the surface roughness, which can potentially improve the fatigue properties of the components. Finally, XCT was used to correlate the amount of retained powder with the pore size of the functionally graded TPMSS, which can further improve the manufacturing process.
Investigation of chloride-induced pitting corrosion of steel in concrete with innovative methods
(2016)
The combination of electrochemical and 3D computed tomography (CT) investigations offers the possibility of verifying electrochemical measurements non-destructively. Determining the steel surfaces damaged by pitting corrosion allows developing specimens having damage pattern corresponding to practice. Corrosion phenomena like decoupled pitting corrosion cannot be verified by electrochemical measurements only, but with the combination of those two kinds of investigations it is possible. Another advantage is the minimization of the number of samples. The classical experimental procedure requires the destruction of samples after each damage step. This can be avoided by the use of 3D computed tomography. As long as the corrosion phenomena are completely within the examination zone shown by the 3D computed tomography, the electrochemical measurements can be calculated on an area basis to get the specific corrosion rate or polarization resistance.
Active thermography is an efficient non-destructive testing method for investigating the internal structure of larger carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components as well as smaller CFRP components in mass customization. The method can be applied contactless and automated. This study contains systematic investigations of CFRP structures with typical defects and inhomogeneities occurring during production by means of flash thermography in reflection and transmission configuration and by computed tomography (CT). The latter one was used as a reference method, since also very small defects at larger depth can be visualized with high spatial resolution. The CFRP structures consist of plates which contain metallic and non-metallic inclusions, contaminations with glue or wax rests, areas with inhomogeneous re-injection of dry parts, fiber misalignments, and fiber damages. Further on, two specimens have been glued together with different artificial inhomogeneities of the four glue beads. The results of the applied methods are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of each configuration are discussed based on the detectability of the inhomogeneities. It is shown that although CT has led to best contrasts and spatial resolutions in displaying the inhomogeneities and inclusions, flash thermography is very well suited to detect most of these structures. Considering that flash thermography can be applied on-site and has a high potential for automation and for a fast and efficient testing, it can be highly recommended for quality assurance during and after production of CFRP structures.
The combination of tomographic, microstructural data with other experimental techniques and with modeling is paramount, if we want to extract the maximum amount of information on material and component properties. In particular, quantitative image analysis, statistical approaches, direct discretization of tomographic reconstructions represent concrete possibilities to extend the power of the tomographic 3D representation to insights into the material and component performance. This logic thread holds equally for industrial and academic research, and valorizes expensive experiments such as those carried out at synchrotron sources, which cannot be daily repeated. We shall show a few examples of possible use of X-ray tomographic data for quantitative assessment of damage evolution and microstructural properties, as well as for non-destructive testing. We will also show how X-ray refraction computed tomography (CT) can be highly complementary to classic absorption CT, being sensitive to internal interfaces.
This paper deals with the initiation and propagation of corrosion in mortar specimens pre-cracked under mechanical loading and carbonated in climate accelerated conditions (50 % CO2–65 % RH) for 15–23 weeks. Mechanical loading led to transverse macro-cracks and damage at the steel-mortar interface characterized by micro-cracks (cover controlled cracking) which favour the carbonation of crack walls and the interface with the steel bar. Wetting–drying cycles performed after carbonation favoured corrosion initiation all along the steel bar because of the carbonated interface and corrosion propagation because of the creation of corrosion cracks which appear to develop from the micro-cracks induced by the mechanical load. Results also show that rust develops all around the perimeter of the carbonated steel bar but that the corrosion layer is thicker in the lower half surface of the reinforcement than that observed in the upper half. Results indicate that the distribution and composition of corrosion products depend on the thickness of the rust layer and that the multilayered structure of rust depends mainly on its thickness.
In order to extend the lifetime of buildings and constructions at the macro scale it is necessary to understand the damage processes of building materials at the micro scale. In particular, durability of reinforced concrete structures is one of the most important equirements for construction planning and restoration of buildings. Therefore degradation mechanisms were reproduced on laboratory specimens.
CT (Computed Tomography) is commonly used for non-destructive microstructural defect analysis for recurring tests on concrete specimens. In this work a few examples of CT applications on cementitious materials (including cement paste, mortar and concrete specimens) will be presented.
Firstly, in order to quantify the degradation processes, specimens analysed were damaged by corrosion due to carbonation and due to chloride ingress. Particular focus has been set to the analysis of cracks.
An automated crack detection tool, developed by Zuse Institut Berlin (ZIB) and BAM in ZIBAmira, has been applied for quantitative analysis of crack parameters and 3D visualization of cracks.
Furthermore the distribution of corrosion products has been evaluated inside the cement matrix and visualized in 3D data sets.
Another important factor for the ageing stability of concrete is the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). The ITZ consists of a layer of cement paste (20 to 40 μm) over every aggregate where porosity is generally increased in comparison with the bulk. This zone could be a preferential zone for transfer of aggressive species. To visualize the ITZ, a small sample of mortar with a diameter of 10mm has been prepared and scanned using the industrial μCT setup at BAM with a spatial resolution of 5μm voxel size. In addition the extracted surface of aggregates could be used for load simulations. We finally show how CT examination of drilled samples taken from building materials in conjunction with laboratory experiments is helpful for further evaluations of damage processes in concrete.
Computertomographie

This poster presentation gives an overview of the great potential of X-ray micro computed tomography (CT) to cast light on the evolution of the microstructure in construction materials. Prevention of damage is of major economic and social importance in the development of suitable construction materials such as concrete and asphalt. Therefore a non-destructive testing method such as CT is an appropriate tool for visualization of the inner structure. Its combination with other test methods allows understanding the damage processes such as crack propagation or corrosion. We show examples of internal structure analyses on a wide range of materials: Automatic 3D crack detection and the visualization of corrosion products inside of steel reinforced concrete, pore and shape analysis of lightweight aggregates and the visualization of deformation of high-pressure loaded aerated concrete specimens, distribution of aggregates inside concrete, and determination of the surface of porous asphalt core samples. Segmented structures serve, e.g., as input data for simulation of transport phenomena or virtual load tests.
In civil engineering, the corrosion of steel reinforcements in structural elements of concrete bares a risk of stability-reduction, mainly caused by the exposure to chlorides. 3D computed tomography (CT) reveals the inner structure of concrete and allows one to investigate the corrosion with non-destructive testing methods. To carry out such investigations, specimens with a large artificial crack and an embedded steel rebar have been manufactured. 3D CT images of those specimens were acquired in the original state. Subsequently three cycles of electrochemical pre-damaging together with CT imaging were applied. These time series have been evaluated by means of image processing algorithms to segment and quantify the corrosion products. Visualization of the results supports the understanding of how corrosion propagates into cracks and pores. Furthermore, pitting of structural elements can be seen without dismantling. In this work, several image processing and visualization techniques are presented that have turned out to be particularly effective for the visualization and segmentation of corrosion products. Their combination to a workflow for corrosion analysis is the main contribution of this work.

During the last decades, X-ray (micro-)computed tomography has gained increasing attention for the description of porous skeletal and shell structures of various organism groups. However, their quantitative analysis is often hampered by the difficulty to discriminate cavities and pores within the object from the surrounding region. Herein, we test the ambient occlusion (AO) algorithm and newly implemented optimisations for the segmentation of cavities (implemented in the software Amira). The segmentation accuracy is evaluated as a function of (i) changes in the ray length input variable, and (ii) the usage of AO (scalar) field and other AO-derived (scalar) fields. The results clearly indicate that the AO field itself outperforms all other AO-derived fields in terms of segmentation accuracy and robustness against variations in the ray length input variable. The newly implemented optimisations improved the AO field-based segmentation only slightly, while the segmentations based on the AOderived fields improved considerably.
Additionally, we evaluated the potential of the AO field and AO-derived fields for the separation and classification of cavities as well as skeletal structures by comparing them with commonly used distance-map-based segmentations. For this, we tested the zooid separation within a bryozoan colony, the stereom classification of an ophiuroid tooth, the separation of bioerosion traces within a marble block and the calice (central cavity)-pore separation within a dendrophyllid coral. The obtained results clearly indicate that the ideal input field depends on the three-dimensional morphology of the object of interest. The segmentations based on the AO-derived fields often provided cavity separations and skeleton classifications that were superior to or impossible to obtain with commonly used distance-map-based segmentations. The combined usage of various AO-derived fields by supervised or unsupervised segmentation algorithms might provide a promising target for future research to further improve the results for this kind of high-end data segmentation and classification. Furthermore, the application of the developed segmentation algorithm is not restricted to X-ray (micro-)computed tomographic data but may potentially be useful for the segmentation of 3D volume data from other sources.
During Rutherford cable production the wires are plastically deformed and their initially round shape is distorted. Using X-ray absorption tomography we have determined the 3D shape of an unreacted Nb3Sn 11 T dipole Rutherford cable, and of a reacted and impregnated Nb3Sn cable double stack. State-of-theart image processing was applied to correct for tomographic artefacts caused by the large cable aspect ratio, for the segmentation of the individual wires and subelement bundles inside the wires, and for the calculation of the wire cross sectional area and shape variations. The 11 T dipole cable cross section oscillates by 2% with a frequency of 1.24 mm (1/80 of the transposition pitch length of the 40 wire cable). A comparatively stronger cross sectional area variation is observed in the individual wires at the thin edge of the keystoned cable where the wire aspect ratio is largest.
Subject of this investigation is the in-situ evolution of pore volume and pore size distribution in Ytong (a porous concrete material) under increasing pressure with two different non-destructive analytical methods: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and X-ray Computed Tomography (CT). For both methods special strain devices to apply external pressure were constructed. The results from the two techniques yield complementary information on the pore size distribution and allows covering different pore size regions.
Larger high pressure die castings (HPDC) and decreasing wall thicknesses are raising the issue of casting defects like pores in aluminum structures. Properties of components are often strongly influenced by inner porosity. As these products are being established more and more in lightweight construction (e.g. automotive and other transport areas), non-destructive testing methods, which can be applied fast and on-site, are required for quality assurance. In this contribution, the application of active thermography for the direct detection of larger pores is demonstrated. The analysis of limits and accuracy of the method are completed by numerical simulation and the method is validated using computed
tomography.
