A research project is described involving a comparison of different non-destructive test methods for concrete bridges. A cooperative test series was started with the aim to compare and evaluate the performance and benefits of the latest technical developments in this field. For this purpose test specimens with localized defects were produced. Different modifications of radar, ultrasonic-echo and impact-echo methods were investigated. Including two- and three- dimensional reconstruction models. The experiments were accompanied by numerical simulation of the propagation of sound waves and microwaves. The results showed that the radar and the ultrasonic methods were efficient tools to locate the tendon ducts accurately if the reinforcing bars were not to narrowly spaced. The ultrasonic imaging methods were capable of identifying injection and compaction faults in a blind test. The good performance of the impact-echo method with regard to locating tendon ducts which was claimed in several publications could not be validated in the present investigations. The simulation models provided valuable information on how to improve the experimental test program and its evaluation.

Today's civil engineering NDT needs are for quantitative, fast to apply and easy to interpret methods. They are required on site both for evaluation of existing structures/infrastructure and for quality control in new construction. With this purpose, BAM has carried out in-situ feasibility studies, using radar, impact-echo and ultrasonic-echo methods. Two examples are given of their combined application on different railway slab–track constructions, using high frequency radar, scanning impact-echo and ultrasonic array methods. The aim was to evaluate limitations and advantages, comparability and complementarity of these methods. The on-site measurements demonstrated the possibility to investigate, with good accuracy via NDT, the bonding conditions between sleepers and slab, to locate voids and measure layer thickness. The acoustic and electromagnetic methods used, were found to be complementary.
Entwicklung einer Gruppenstrahler-Sendeeinheit für Ultraschalluntersuchungen von Betonbauteilen
(2002)
The structural safety, durability and performance of the infrastructure is of primary interest in every country. An efficient system for early and regular structural assessment as well as for quality assurance during and after the construction of new structures and of reconstruction processes is urgently required. At BAM, NDT methods to be applied in civil engineering are developed and their application improved. From the experience of on-site assessments, quality assurance systems and methodologies for regular inspections are elaborated. This work is mainly performed in the frame of externally funded research projects.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) of concrete structures is performed using pulse-echo methods. According to the type of the applied waves it can be classified as acoustic (Impact-Echo, Ultrasonics) and electromagnetic methods (Radar). The results are visualised through different imaging processes. This work is performed in the frame of a research project promoted by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (FOR384).The objective of data fusion is to use the complementary information of the different methods. Radar can detect metallic reflectors in concrete (metallic ducts and concrete reinforcement) very well. This method is not able to locate defects behind these reflectors (injecting defects, defects behind close concrete reinforcement), because the electromagnetic waves are completely reflected at metals. The acoustic methods are able to compensate this deficit i.e. acoustic waves can penetrate through metal. But acoustic waves in the ultrasonic range are completely reflected by air layers. Air layers have smaller influence on radar propagation, so that both methods complement each other. In order to be able to combine the NDT-data from several methods records at the same volume, the different data setsmodes of signals must be adapted. The ultrasonic and radar data have to be reconstructed with programs based on the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) before data fusion. Subsequently, a conversion of the data into a uniform format has to be carried out. This is a prerequisite in order to keep the data exchange between the project partners as simple as possible. After the data sets are imported and transferred into a common reference system, they can be processed with operations according to the purpose of the investigation. Results, which have been achieved in concrete test specimen with radar and ultrasonics, will be presented and will show the feasibility of the data fusion method.
Since several years ultrasonic imaging techniques are used for testing concrete elements. Combined with a reconstruction calculation they lead to an acoustic imaging of scatterers and reflectors from the inside of the concrete element. For several testing problems it is an advantage to use a two dimensional synthetic aperture and to combine it with a three-dimensional reconstruction calculation (3D-SAFT, Synthetic Aperture Focussing Technique).
This enables the analysis of the tested volume by means of B-scans in two directions and C-scans (projections parallel to the surface), respectively. Using the 2D-scanning technique, especially the disturbing influence of the reinforcing rebars can be minimised.
In this contribution the state of the art of this method is demonstrated and analysed. Examples of the application are presented, concerning
Localisation of honeycombing and compaction faults
Characterisation of cracks (especially measuring the crack depth)
Investigation of tendon ducts
The results presented are obtained in the frame of a research initiative Non-destructive Evaluation of Concrete Structures Using Acoustic and Electromagnetic Echo-Methods supported by the German Science Council (FOR 384 of DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). The methods are assessed and improved in cooperation with the partners participating in the project.

Improved Detection of Tendon Ducts and Defects in Concrete Structures Using Ultrasonic Imaging
(2002)
At the beginning of the 90s the general opinion was, that ultrasonic inspection methods using pulse-echo technique were not suitable for the inspection of concrete because of the inhomogeneity and the strong scattering behavior of the embedded aggregates. In the meantime the progress in the development of new equipment and inspection strategies in connection with ultrasonic imaging techniques turns the pulse-echo technique into a powerful tool to solve problems related to concrete materials. These imaging techniques - developed for the inspection of homogenous materials like steel of aluminum - could be adopted to the very low frequencies needed for concrete inspections.
Ultrasonic investigation is an established non-destructive testing method for detection of defects and material characterisation. In the last years scanning ultrasonic echo methods were developed especially for the application in civil engineering.
The different scanning ultrasonic echo methods are modified with respect to the type of the transducer applied, the number and the arrangement of transducers and the frequency used. Also different algorithms are used to analyse the measured data, for instance SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) reconstruction. The results are typically presented as B- and C-scans, obtained from raw data or the SAFT reconstructed data.
Since 2001 several German research institutes co-operate within the scope of the research initiative Non-destructive Evaluation of Concrete Structures Using Acoustic and Electromagnetic Echo-Methods (FOR 384) supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). One of the tasks is to investigate these ultrasonic echo methods for special applications like the detection of cavities in concrete structures or faults in tendon ducts.
Concrete test specimens with intentional faults have been manufactured and investigated. Parameters were defined to assess the results more objectively. Currently three parameters -signal/noise-ratio, lateral edge resolution and uniformity- are considered. For the first time results of different working groups on the same imaged objects are compared quantitatively. It should help to get more knowledge about the ultrasonic inspection of typical faults in civil engineering structures.
Ultrasonic reconstruction by the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) has a great potential to image concrete elements and detect embedded objects. Its algorithm focuses ultrasonic signals received at many aperture points by coherent superposition, yielding a high-resolution image of the region of interest. Using this approach, several problems caused by the strongly inhomogeneous structure of concrete are diminished, where scattering of transmitted pulses leads to disturbing phenomena such as attenuation and structural noise. This contribution is intended to review the work of the writers on the application of SAFT reconstruction to concrete testing. First, consequences of scattering of ultrasonic waves in concrete are qualitatively explained. Then the use of SAFT is discussed in comparison to traditional A-scan and B-scan techniques. Different reconstruction algorithms and implementations are presented for one-, two-, and three-dimensional SAFT. Pulse-echo measurement systems are described, which are able to acquire large sets of data on linear and planar apertures employing single transducer, transducer array, and scanning laser Doppler vibrometer arrangements. To illustrate the application of the SAFT techniques, examples from laboratory and field experiments are described comprising imaging of back walls, tendon ducts containing faults, layers, and reinforcement in concrete elements.
Laser vibrometric contactless sound field measurements at a concrete test block are presented. Both excitation by an ultrasonic probe and by an impactor were used. The wave modes can be identified by their geometric wave forms and propagation velocities. Additionally, numerical simulation of the experimental situation is used to support this interpretation. Possible applications of the presented technique are discussed. ©2005 American Institute of Physics
During the re-use process of existing concrete memebers like foundations information about geometry and location of piles or strip foundation is necessary. Ultrasonic echo with a need of only one-sided access may provide this information and help the engineer to assess foundations. Cost effectiveness by the re-use of foundations gains an increasing economic role due to decreasing average economic lifetime of buildings on urban sites. Results of systematic ultrasonic echo investigations at a slab from 75 cm to 125 cm thickness with ten different reinforcement ratios are presented. The influence of the varying reinforcement ratio and thickness on the reliability of the results is shown. Available data-processing algorithms based on reconstruction calculation and imaging of results to reveal the geometry of a slab and the location of piles or strip foundations are introduced. Practical guidance for the application of ultrasonic echo and its limits are presented to ensure reliable results.
Non-destructive Testing of a Post tensioned Concrete Bridge Applying an Automated Measuring System
(2004)
Non-destructive Testing of a Post tensioned Concrete Bridge Applying an Automated Measuring System
(2004)

Validation of non-destructive testing methods is necessary to create a common basis where different systems can be compared and their applications and limitations be identified. This can be achieved through comparing the measurements taken by several systems used for a common diagnostic purpose under practical but controlled testing conditions. Well-designed small and large laboratory or field specimens promise such conditions.
The special concrete specimen (LCS) at BAM was constructed for validation purposes, in particular, to be used for evaluating the performance of echo methods. The thickness of the specimen is varying and it contains carefully designed built-in faults, such as voids, honeycombs and tendon ducts with various degrees of grouting defects. Since the geometry and condition of the defects are known, it can be used to compare the performance of radar, ultrasonic, impact-echo. The research was conducted within the Research group FOR384, sponsored by the German Research Society DFG.
Characterization of reflector types by phase-sensitive ultrasonic data processing and imaging
(2008)
Ultrasonic and radar imaging techniques are limited in resolution by the wavelength in the material, yet information beyond those limits is hidden in complex frequency dependent reflection coefficients. The analysis of the phase of complex reflection coefficients together with the properties of imaging algorithms can help to characterize and to classify indications of defects in concrete buildings. This paper describes a method to extract phase information from measurements and SAFT reconstructed images. The influencing factors like material properties, transducer characteristics, and imaging algorithms based on Born or Physical Optics approximations are elaborated. Simulated and experimental results are briefly discussed.
This paper presents the progress of successful location of grouting faults in tendon ducts with ultrasonic imaging. The examples were obtained in the research group FOR 384 funded by DFG (German Research Foundation). The co-operation of experimental research and modeling allowed imaging and identification of grouted and ungrouted areas of tendon ducts (including strands) in a large test specimen (40 m²). In addition to the criteria for indicating grouting faults in post-tensioned ducts known until now the phase evaluation of reflected ultrasonic pulses is described. Experiments and modeling of wave propagation are presented for reflections at metal plates in concrete (thickness range 0.5 mm to 40 mm) and for tendon ducts including strands.
The main part of the progress was achieved by automated measurements using dry contact transducers, 3D-SAFT reconstruction including phase evaluation and modeling considering wave propagation for typical elastic parameters and exact experimental site conditions. The results for shear waves as well as for pressure waves are compared in the frequency range from 50 kHz to 120 kHz.

For nondestructive testing of concrete buildings under the aspect of tendon duct analysis, ultrasonic testing has proven to be a suitable method, as both the measuring technique in particular the acoustic sensors and the numerical methods allow the insonification and imaging of larger surfaces and volumes. With the aid of numerical modelling of elastic wave propagation in complex media real life problems can be examined with the goal to design or even to replace test specimen. By determination of the phase of an imaged scattering event, defects can be classified, and the prediction of the integrity of buildings can be significantly objectified. The methods are explained for selected examples in an integral way with respect to scalar and polarimetric imaging algorithms supported by modelling and subsequent classification through phase analysis.
There is a great demand for non-destructive testing methods for quality assurance and to assess the safety and durability of wooden structures. Ultrasonic echo technique with shear waves in the frequency range of 50 kHz is one of those promising methods and is already frequently applied for usual and glued laminated timber. The article describes the development and first results for an imaging method for this purpose. The highly anisotropic properties of the ultrasonic velocity have to be considered. A 3D-SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) imaging scheme is developed initially for synthetic data resulting from modelling the elastic wave propagation. The main part of the paper describes the experimental validation of this evaluation technique by experimental studies applying automated ultrasonic scanning techniques. 3D ultrasonic imaging results are described for test specimens made from pine and spruce wood. Another object of investigation was a pedestrian bridge made from siberian larch.
Ultrasonic imaging of tendon ducts enables the precise localisation of grouting faults in many cases. Additionally to well known criteria for detecting grouting faults in tendon ducts recently new possibilities were developed. Two main effects influence the complex behaviour of wave propagation and reflection: a) different arrangement and number of strands or internal rebars; b) superposition of reflecting signals and different wave modes propagating into the interface region around the tendon duct. In order to understand the experimental results, EFIT modelling is performed (EFIT: Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique).
