Spin transition in heptanuclear star-shaped iron(III)-antimony(V) NCS- and CN-bridged compounds
(2009)
The precursor [FeIII(L)Cl] (LH2 = N,N'-bis(2'-hydroxy-benzyliden)-1,6-diamino-3-azahexane) has been prepared and Mössbauer spectroscopy assigned a high-spin (S = 5/2) state at room temperature. The precursor is combined with the bridging units [SbV(X)6]- (X = CN-, NCS-) to yield star-shaped heptanuclear clusters [(LFeIII-X)6SbV]Cl5. The star-shaped compounds are in general high-spin systems at room temperature. On cooling to 20 K some of the iron(III) centers switch to the low-spin state as indicated by Mössbauer spectroscopy, i.e. multiple electronic transitions. While the cyano-bridged complex performs a multiple spin transition the thiocyanate-compound shows no significant population at both temperatures.
The precursor [FeIII(L)Cl] (LH<sub2 = N,N'-bis(2'-hydroxy-benzyliden)-1,6-diamino-3-N-hexane is a high-spin (S = 5/2) complex. This precursor is combined with the bridging units [SnIV(X)4] (X = CN-, NCS-) to yield star-shaped pentanuclear clusters, [(LFeIII-X)4Sn]Cl4. For X = CN- the 57Fe-Mössbauer data show a multiple spin transition between iron(III) in the high-spin and low-spin state, while the 119mSn-Mössbauer data indicate a valence tautomerism between Sn(IV) and Sn(II). Changing the bridging unit from X = CN- to X = NCS- turns the switchability off.
The precursor [FeIII(L)Cl] (LH2 = N,N'-bis(2'-hydroxy-3'-X-benzyliden)-1,6-diamino-3-N-hexane) is a high-spin (S = 5/2) complex (with X = -CH3, -O-CH3). This precursor is combined with the bridging unit [SnIV(CN)4] to yield star-shaped pentanuclear clusters, [(L-X-FeIII)4Sn(CN)4]Cl4 57Fe-Mössbauer, 119mSn-Mössbauer, and ESR spectroscopy are used to study our samples. For X = -CH3 the 57Fe-Mössbauer data show a multiple spin transition between iron(III) in the high-spin and low-spin state. Changing the functional group from X = -CH3 to X = -O-CH3 turns the switchability off.
The robust determination of the threshold against fatigue crack propagation DKth is of paramount importance in fracture mechanics based fatigue assessment procedures. The standards ASTM E647 and ISO 12108 introduce operational definitions of DKth based on the crack propagation rate da/dN and suggest linear fits of logarithmic DK– da/dN test data to calculate DKth. Since these fits typically suffer from a poor representation of the actual curvature of the crack propagation curve, a method for evaluating DKth using a nonlinear function is proposed. It is shown that the proposed method reduces the artificial conservativeness induced by the evaluation method as well as the susceptibility to scatter in test data and the influence of test data density.
The impact of crack closure and environmental effects on the experimental determination of the fatigue crack propagation threshold is a major problem for the assessment of cyclically loaded components, especially at low stress ratios 𝑅. In this work, the influence of the experimental procedure and air humidity on d𝑎∕d𝑁 − 𝛥𝐾 data at different 𝑅 is discussed. Unlike the results at 𝑅 = −1, the threshold values obtained at 𝑅 ≈ 0.8, i.e. under negligible crack closure levels, show a very small scatter band regardless of the variation of the test parameters and environmental conditions.
Materials used in military applications have to withstand multiple threats like ballistics and explosions. Thus, high-strength low alloyed (HSLA) steels are used. The main joining technique for metals is welding. Therefore, analysing the dynamic impact behaviour of high-strength welds is very important to fulfil these demands.
Investigation of welds at high strain rates has rarely been conducted in the past. To determine the dynamic impact behaviour of hybrid laser-arc welds, the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique was used. The base material was a quenched and tempered fine-grained armour steel with yield strength of 1100 MPa.
First, a full hybrid laser-arc weld was investigated by extracting specimens consisting of weld metal and heat affected base material. The influence of two variables, the cooling time between 800 °C and 500 °C (t8/5) and strength of filler material, on the impact behaviour was studied. The cooling time t8/5 was varied by preheating to influence the microstructure in the HAZ and to analyse the effect on the hardness and dynamic compressive strength.
Subsequent analysis to detail the original Investigation was carried out by dilatometer heat treatment of specimens to create homogenous subzones of the weld. These specimens have a homogenous microstructure of HAZ and were tested by SHPB to determine the stress-strain characteristics for the different microstructures of HAZ.
The results of the weld specimen showed the effect of preheating and filler material strength on the dynamic compressive behaviour. The analysis of the different microstructures of the HAZ indicated that especially the tempered microstructure caused a reduction in dynamic compressive strength.
