Additive manufacturing of alkali-activated materials currently attracts a lot of attention, because of the possibility to produce customized high-performance elements for a range of applications, potentially being more resource-efficient than conventionally produced parts. Here, we describe a new additive manufacturing process for alkali-activated materials that is based on selective laser-heating of lithium aluminate/microsilica slurries. The new process-material combination allows to manufacture elements with complex geometries at high building rates and high accuracy. The process is versatile and transferrable to structures of sizes differing by orders of magnitude. The mechanical strength of the obtained materials was in the range of values reported for conventional metakaolin-based geopolymers, and superior to what has been hitherto reported for alkali-activated materials produced by additive manufacturing. This mechanical performance was obtained despite the fact that the degree of reaction of the lithium aluminate and the microsilica was low, suggesting that significant reactions took place only at the surface of the microsilica particles.
Todays superplasticizers for self-compacting concrete and high Performance cementitious materials are very versatile. Typically superplasticizers are composed of a polycarboxylic backbone equipped with polyethylene oxide graft chains of variable length and grafting degree. The mode of operation of these admixtures is based on the steric repulsion of the particles upon adsorption. The adsorption is strongly depending upon the charge density of a superplasticizer and the time dependent Adsorption processes control the retention of the flow performance – an important issue particularly for ready-mix and construction site concrete. However, the properties of polycarboxylic superplasticizers typically remain a black box for users. The paper suggests a simple and rapid test method, which can be conducted without sophisticated equipment, to qualitatively distinguish between two types of superplasticizers based on the adsorption mechanism. Interpreting the results in the right way provides a powerful tool to choose the right admixture for individual time dependent flow specifications.
The main objective of this work is to determine chloride migration coefficients for alkali activated fly ash-based mortars. The effect of various mixture composition is studied. The identified values will be used in simulations of chloride transport in the alkali-activated composites, mainly to determine a critical time span of exposition to chlorides causing corrosion of reinforcement. Rapid chloride migration experiments (RCM) are performed on cylindrical specimens, 100 mm diameter, 50 mm height. Low voltage electric field (10–30 V DC) is applied as a driving force for the accelerated chloride penetration. The chloride front in the sample is identified according to NT Build 492 standard after given time of penetration (depending on the electrical current ~ 3 hours) on a fracture surface using silver nitrate solution.
Further, accelerated diffusion experiments are performed in order to verify the migration coefficients obtained using RCM. The total chloride content is determined, and chloride profiles obtained on powder ground from separate layers of the specimen.
The most common method for determination of the carbonation depth is the sprayed application of indicator solutions, Phenolphthalein in particular. Since the aerosols of Phenolphthalein are suspected to be carcinogenic, efforts have been intensified to use alternative indicators for the determination of carbonation depth. The subject and aim of this research paper are to examine indicator solutions from Alizarin Yellow R, Thymol Blue and a Mixed Indicator. These indicator solutions are commercially available and are not suspected to be carcinogenic.
For the purpose of this research, samples previously stored under accelerated carbonation conditions (1% CO2) were examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and examination of the pH value. Additionally, the electrolytic back-titration for determination of total CO2 amount was carried out comparatively to TGA.
Alkali-activated materials are ideal for the repair of concrete structures in harsh environmental conditions due to their high durability in chemically aggressive environments. However, slag-based mortars, in particular, are prone to shrinkage and associated cracks. In this respect, the application of steel fibres is one solution to reduce the formation of shrinkage induced cracks and to improve post cracking behaviour of these mortars. This study investigated the influence of two different types of steel fibres on the tensile properties of two alkali-activated mortars. Direct tensile tests and single fibre pull-outs were performed to analyse the determining failure modes both on macro and micro scale. Mechanical testing was accompanied by non-destructive testing methods such as digital image correlation and acoustic emission for a detailed analysis of the fracture process.
