Stress corrosion cracking of prestressing steels
During the investigation of a post-tensioned bridge structure incipient cracks of the prestressing steels of the transverse prestressed members were observed. Defects related to non-injected ducts or the presence of corrosion inducing substances could not be detected. The prestressing steel used is a quenched and tempered steel, strength class St 140/160, which was produced in the former GDR. The cause for the cracks is the susceptibility of this type of steel to hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking as could be shown in laboratory tests. Under unfavourable conditions cracks can be initiated before grouting. Additional magnetic particle tests at selected areas of the longitudinal prestressed members did not indicate any signs for incipient cracks.

Consumer safety of cooking materials made of stainless steel - Electrochemical measurements of nickel release into food
Cooking utensils of stainless steels grade 1.4301 can deliver specific ions into the cooking good due to corrosion reactions at the interface cooking good and utensil. In cooking tests under practical conditions a very small but under human health considerations negligible uptake specifically of Ni in the cooking good was detected which also decreased with time of service. The present work was aimed at studying the corrosion behaviour of stainless steel from two manufacturers under conditions typical for cooking. For this purpose electrochemical tests have been carried out in various electrolytes to get information about the passive behaviour of the steel. The results indicated complete and undisturbed passivity under all environmental conditions and are therefore in good agreement with the results from the original cooking tests.

Long-term experiences with a cathodic protection system for steel in concrete
In 1986 in Germany the first cathodic protection system for reinforced concrete structures was put into service. Installation, commissioning and the regular monitoring were scientifically supported.
Due to necessary traffic related reconstruction measures the system was switch off after 15 years of service. Investigations carried out during that period should verify laboratory test results at a real structure and furthermore yield information on the long-term behaviour concerning durability, temperature dependence, potential distribution, chloride migration etc.
With increasing time of service the protection criteria could only be met by increasing the transformer rectifier voltage (the system worked in the constant voltage mode). Extensive investigations of the anode material (conductive polymer wire with a copper core) after 15 years of service showed that irreversible changes substantially decreased the polymer's conductivity limiting the functionality. Today, these kind of anodes are not used any more for the application in cathodic protection systems of reinforced concrete structures.
Prestressing steels can be exposed in prestressed concrete structures in construction stage (ungrouted duct) to environmental conditions causing formation and growth of hydrogen induced cracks with brittle fracture of the steel. The risk of this hydrogen induced stress corrosion cracking can be minimized by appropriate treatment, but there is a requirement for construction to approve only prestressing steel having no enhanced susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. The paper describes the historical development of the different test methods proposed in the past and gives an overview on the general requirements for a suitable test method to assess the hydrogen-induced stress corrosion susceptibility of prestressing steels.
Since 1982, based on investigations on construction sites and transfer of the results into laboratory tests, a test method is available enabling realistic estimation of suitable application possibilities of prestressing steels. This so called DIBt-test is approved to distinguish between prestressing steels susceptible to hydrogen induced stress corrosion cracking and those suitable and therefore approvable steels at practical environmental conditions. Furthermore the test enables estimation of corrosion risk for newly developed prestressing steels with higher strength.

Cathodic protection (CP) is a common method for rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures suffering from Chloride induced corrosion. A sufficient protection of the corroding rebar can be ensured by use of several protection criteria. The use of these assessment criteria, in particular the so called 100 mV-criterion, can lead to erroneous resuits for certain unconventional arrangements of rebar and cp anode.
Therefore a joint research project of the Institute for Building Materials Research, RWTH-Aachen University, Germany, (ibac) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Berlin, Germany, (BAM) has been set up to determine the applicability of CP under arbitrary geometrical conditions. A special focus was set on the applicability of surface applied anode Systems for protection of the reinforcement of structures opposite to the accessible side (e.g. outer side of tunnel Shell, Bridge deck protected from inside a box girder) In this paper, the impact of the time dependent changes of the Polarisation behaviour of the rebar on the current and potential distribution is shown by means of parametric studies using the FEM method.
Modelling of reinforcement corrosion - Influence of concrete technology on corrosion development
(2006)
Reinforcement corrosion is influenced by different parameters like resistivity of concrete, setting conditions and also by concrete technology. Moreover the presence of cathodic areas and the possibility of unhampered cathodic reaction influences the reinforcement corrosion. In this paper the development of corrosion without large cathodic areas, called self-corrosion, considering different concrete parameters, is studied.
Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete exposed to chloride containing environments is a serious problem in civil engineering practice. Electrochemical methods, e.g., potential mapping, provide information whether the steel reinforcement is still passive or depassivation has been initiated. By applying such techniques no information on the type of corrosion, its extent and distribution of corrosion products is available. Particular the corrosion progress is a significant problem. Especially in the case of macrocell corrosion in reinforced concrete structures, the development at the anode cannot be separated into corrosion damage resulting from macrocell corrosion or self-corrosion. Until now also in laboratory tests it is impossible to collect such information without destroying specimens after electrochemical testing was performed. To overcome this problem it was tried to study the steel surface within the mortar specimens by X-ray tomography (CT). Within the scope of these investigations it could be shown, that X-ray tomography is suitable to make corrosion pits and their development visible which are embedded in a mortar with a cover thickness of about 35 mm. In this publication the time-dependent corrosion damage of reinforced steel is documented by X-ray tomography.
The paper presents the damage model of German Research Unit 537 which was used as a working hypothesis for the development of a user-friendly design model. Excerpts from the laboratory experiments and numerical calculations processed in project A of the research unit are presented here. The excerpts include the quantification of self-corrosion, geometrical effects in the macrocell corrosion, development of corroding steel surface and pit depth as well as the quantification of the resistivity of the concrete and the corrosion of steel in cracked concrete.
