The application of intumescent coatings for fire protection of steel constructions is increasing. Thanks to the relative thin thickness of the coatings, the typical visual appearance of the structures can be preserved. The applicability of the systems is regulated by the national German as well as European technical approvals. According to the approvals, the application on steel members in tension is only allowed with limitations. Especially, the application on solid steel rods in tension is currently not yet covered. This contribution first explains the actual state of the art of the application of reactive fire protection systems to steel structures. Technical background information is provided. Furthermore, a case study is presented in order to illustrate the limitations in the scope of the approvals and a possible approach to allow the application of intumescent coatings on solid steel rods via an approval for a specific construction project. After that, the latest scientific results of a research project funded by the German National Institute of Building Technology (DIBt) and conducted by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) are described. The objective of the project is to enable the application of intumescent coatings on solid steel rods in tension within the scope of approvals in general.
Mechanical properties of cold drawn steel S355 at elevated temperatures used for tension rods. In construction, circular solid steel rods with relatively small diameter are often used for tensile elements. These elements are usually made of cold drawn steel. As a result of the manufacturing process, the material properties of the steel are changed. In the standard [1], no information regarding the temperature-dependant material properties of cold drawn steel are given. At BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, a research project [2] was conducted to investigate the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures of tension elements made of cold drawn steel type S355. In the experiments, the tensile specimens were produced from a circular solid profile with a diameter of 20 mm. Within the research project, the chemical composition, the modulus of elasticity, the stress-strain-relationships and the thermal expansion coefficient were determined. The aim of this investigation was to identify the specific material characteristics of cold drawn steel under fire exposure. Furthermore, a comparison between cold drawn steel and the commonly used in construction hot-rolled steel was done, in order to clarify whether the material properties of hot rolled steel that are given in the standard [1] can be also used for cold drawn steel. The results of the material tests are used as input values for a numerical simulation of fire tests on tension elements with reactive fire protection systems.
In civil engineering, steel tension members are normally used for bracings, suspensions and underbracing systems. Typically, slim circular solid sections (CSS) are used for such tension members. However, sufficient knowledge about the performance of reactive fire protection systems (RFPS) applied to solid steel tension members has so far been missing. The application of RFPS on such members was not covered by national German approvals (abZ) as well as European technical assessments (ETA) and therefore only possible by approvals in individual case by the building authority. This paper describes the world’s first scientifically investigated fire tests of RFPS applied to steel tension members with CSS. The influence of various parameters such as profile geometry, dry film thickness of the RFPS, level of the load utilization as well as member orientation was tested. In addition, the foaming and cracking behaviour and thermal protection of the RFPS used are investigated and failure mechanisms are identified. To measure the steel temperature of the tension member without weakening the cross-section a special method for the application of thermocouples was developed. The fire tests show that an application of RFPS on steel tension members with solid section is generally possible. However, due to the slim cross-sections and the missing possibility of load distribution within the tension member, high requirements are placed particularly on the effectiveness and reliability of the RFPS. In particular, the testing of mechanically loaded tension members is essential, since the necessary three-dimensional foaming results in the highest stress level for the RFPS. The findings obtained from the performed fire tests are of general nature. Recommendations for the testing and assessment of RFPS applied to steel tension members with solid section are briefly described in this paper and explained in detail in [1] and [2]. Based on this research, the German building authority (DIBt) has defined national approval guidelines for the testing and the assessment of RFPS applied to tension members with solid section. Since November 2015, a general building approval for a RFPS is available in Germany.
In this paper, a nonlinear three-dimensional finite element (FE) model was developed and validated to study the effect of seismic damage location on the response of concrete filled tube (CFT) columns at fire after earthquakes. Three analyses were conducted consecutively in the modelling, namely, cyclic, thermal and structural. Results of the cyclic loading analysis comprising residual deformations were applied as the Initial condition to the thermal-stress model, replicating the seismic performance of column.
Following, a nonlinear sequentially coupled-thermal stress Analysis was carried out to investigate the fire response of CFT columns after the seismic event. Three damage scenarios were contemplated, considering any possible potential damages that could be generated by the earthquake loading on CFT columns. The accuracy of the proposed FE model was examined by comparing the numerical results with that of available tests on fire and cyclic loading. By means of the validated model, the performance of damaged CFT columns was then investigated under fire after earthquakes. The level of damage was assumed as a high damage level, presuming that the column reached 50% of ist lateral resistance while still maintaining its overall stability after the earthquake. The results were presented broadly, including the axial deformation history as well as the fire resistance time for CFT columns. To have a comprehensive insight on the influence of damage location in columns, the fire response of damaged specimens was compared with that of an intact one.
In this study, a nonlinear three-dimensional finite element (FE) model was developed and validated to investigate the response of concrete filled tube (CFT) columns subjected to post-earthquake fires. Three steps were considered successively in the modelling, namely, cyclic, thermal and structural analyses. Outputs from the cyclic loading including residual deformationswere imposed as an initial condition to the thermal-stress model, imitating the seismic response of the column. Subsequently, a nonlinear sequentially thermal-stress analysis was conducted to simulate the fire response of column after the earthquake. The proposed FE model was validated by comparing the simulation resultswith the observations of full-scale fire and cyclic tests available in the literature.
The validated numericalmodelwas then used to study the behavior of CFT columns under the combined action of earthquake and fire as a multi-hazard event. Three probable seismic damage scenarios were considered in the column, namely, middle length, bottom and top end region damages. The level of damage was assumed as a high damage level, presuming that the column reached 50% of its lateral resistance while still maintaining ist overall stability after the earthquake. The results showed that the top and bottom end region damages have not significantly influence the fire response of the damaged column. Besides, the column with the middle span damage performed a lesser fire resistance time owing to the coincidence of damage location to that of onset of global buckling.
Nowadays there are intumescent coatings available for diverse applications. There is no established assessment of their protection performance besides the standard time-temperature curve, but natural fire scenarios often play an important role. A reliable straightforward performance-based assessment is presented. The effective thermal conductivity per thickness is calculated based on intermediate-scale fire tests. The optimum thermal insulation, the time to reach it, and the time until contingent failure of the coating are used for an assessment independent of the heating curve. The procedure was conducted on four different commercially intumescent coatings for steel construction, one solvent-based, one waterborne, one epoxy-based, and a bandage impregnated with a waterborne coating. The performance was studied under four different but similar shaped heating curves with different maximum temperatures (standard time-temperature curve, hydrocarbon curve and two self-designed curves with reduced temperature). The thermal protection performance is crucially affected by the residue morphology. Therefore, a comprehensive morphology analysis, including micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy, was conducted on small-scale residues (7.5 x 7.5 cm2). Two different types of inner structures and the residue surface after different heat exposures were discussed in terms of their influence on thermal protection performance.
Intumescent fire protection coatings are used to improve the fire resistance of steel members. Due to slender cross-sections typically used for tension members, high demands are placed on the effectiveness and reliability of the intumescent coatings. This paper describes real-scale fire tests of intumescent coatings applied to steel tension members with circular solid and hollow sections. First, the current regulations for the application of intumescent coatings on steel tension members are discussed. After that, a comparison between the foaming behaviour and failure mechanisms of intumescent coatings applied to steel tension members with different cross-sections and loading conditions is given. Next, the experimental setup and procedure of the performed fire tests are presented. In addition, the influences of various parameters on the performance of the intumescent coating are analysed, including the geometry of the steel profile, dry film thickness of the intumescent coating, load utilisation level as well as the orientation of the member. Based on the theoretical considerations and results of the fire tests, it is evidenced that mechanically loaded fire tests are essential to assess accurately the contribution of intumescent fire protection coatings to the fire resistance of steel tension members with circular solid sections.
Intumescent coatings are commonly used in civil engineering to improve the fire resistance of steel constructions. Especially in the case of tension bars, where mostly circular or rectangular solid sections are used, intumescent coatings offer an efficient measure to improve the fire resistance taking advantage of profile-following application and low coating thickness requirements. Thus, the architectural appearance of slender profiles can be preserved. The paper describes real-scale mechanically loaded and unloaded fire tests of circular and rectangular solid steel tension bars with intumescent coating. The aim of these tests is to investigate the influence of the different profile types as well as different bar orientations on the performance of intumescent coatings. The results are used to specify a normative test and assessment procedure to be implemented in a new European standard for determining the contribution of intumescent coatings to the fire resistance of circular or rectangular bars used as tension members.
The size effect has its origin in fracture mechanics and describes the formation as well as propagation of cracks in brittle and solid materials in dependence of the specimen size. However, the size effect in concrete spalling describes the damage behaviour on a macroscopic scale for different sized specimens in case of fire. Concrete spalling is a very complex and yet not fully understood phenomenon. To reduce the effort of fire tests to analyse the spalling behaviour of concrete mixtures, this study investigates the susceptibility to spalling for six different concrete mixtures and three specimen sizes. The sizes were divided in full scale slabs (1.8 m x 1.2 m x 0.3 m), intermediate scale cuboids (0.6 m x 0.6 m x 0.3 m) and small scale cylinders (Ø0.15 m x 0.3 m). For this purpose, a novel test set-up was built to test six intermediate scale or twelve small scale specimens simultaneously to ensure a similar heating regime for every specimen. All specimens were fire exposed on one side and remained unrestrained. A size effect occurred for four of the six concrete mixtures. Compared to the full scale specimens the spalling was reduced significantly for all smaller specimen sizes. Additionally, spalling did not occur for the small scale specimens. The results show that the specimen size is an essential parameter to investigate the susceptibility to spalling of a concrete mixture. For future investigations the testing conditions must be adjusted for the intermediate scale specimens to recreate the conditions of the slabs.
Perspektivisch sollen damit u. a.
Understanding the susceptibility to spalling of concrete members in case of fire is important to evaluate the residual load-bearing capacity. The investigations of the spalling phenomenon of a concrete mixture using real scale members are necessary but expensive to carry out. Reducing the specimen size leads to an increase of boundary effects that can result in a reduced spalling or absence of spalling. In this study, fire tests were carried out on unrestrained, single-sided exposed, cuboid shaped specimens (0.6 m x 0.6 m x 0.29 m) as well as unrestrained and steel ring restrained cylindrical specimens (Ø = 0.47 m, h = 0.29 m), which induce different boundary conditions. These fire tests were carried out on two ordinary concrete mixtures. The two mixtures differ only in the type of aggregates (quartz gravel and basalt grit) and were used to investigate the influence of the thermal expansion of the aggregate on the spalling behaviour of the concrete. The results show a significant increase of
the spalling depth due to the restrained thermal expansion achieved by the applied steel rings. Additionally, the type of aggregate has a direct influence on the spalling behaviour of a concrete mixture. The reduction of the boundary effects by the steel rings recreate the test conditions in the centre of a large concrete member. Thus, this type of specimen is suitable to determine the susceptibility to spalling of a material (screening-tests) as preliminary investigations to full scale fire tests.
