The applicability of polymer-metal composites is mainly determined by the durability of the adhesive strength between both components. Aluminium (Al) deposited on polypropylene (PP) exemplifies different options of interface design. By deposition of plasma polymers on PP the effect of the type of the functionality was investigated. Spacer insertion was accomplished to position the functional group away from the topmost surface. A further kind of interface design involved a partial condensation of functional groups. Hydroxyl and carboxyl groups were most effective to improve adhesion in Al-PP systems. Approximately 7-10 carboxyl or 25-27 hydroxyl groups per 100 C atoms were necessary to increase the peel strength up to ~700 N/m. In this range, the failure of the composite propagated along the interface Al-tape (no peeling of the metal). Spacer molecules between surface and functional groups provoked the effect that the number of needed functional groups for maximum adhesion was strongly reduced. Linking of the functional groups resulted in non-peelable Al-PP laminates. Two adhesion tests were applied - the peel test and the centrifuge technology. For PP foils modified with chemically bonded and additionally linked silanol groups (no peeling) an adhesive strength of (2.5 ± 0.2) N/mm² was determined by centrifuge technology. XPS inspection of both fracture surfaces indicated a sub-surface failure in the polymer.
Standardised conventional adhesion tests are time-consuming single-sample tests. Moreover, except for the pull-off test, all these tests provide only qualitative or semi-quantitative (ranking, respectively measurement of an adhesion-correlated quantity) information on adhesion. Sometimes, adhesion is evaluated even under compressive stress conditions (e.g. cross-cut and scratch test), which itself is a contradiction to adhesive strength as defined in terms of tensile force per area.
For optical coatings it has been shown that the pull-off test in a centrifuge is definitely a promising alternative with respect to the reliable, fast and quantitative determination of adhesive strength in N/mm2. The force-controlled centrifuge test is the only multiple-sample test which provides reliable quantitative information on the adhesive strength in agreement with DIN EN 15870 and DIN EN ISO 4624 on a statistical basis for up to eight samples simultaneously tested under identical testing conditions.
Composite materials fulfil a great variety of functions in a wide field of applications. Testing the composite properties under environmental conditions is a must for development and quality control. Common tensile strength test instruments have limitations, like single sample handling only. Present test methods for multi-layers, e.g. peel test, permit semi-quantitative ,or qualitative evaluation only. A new instrument based on analytical centrifugation is introduced, using centrifugal force as test load, permitting to determine bonding and adhesive strength of up to 8 samples simultaneously.
The multiple-sample approach by means of centrifugal adhesion testing (CAT-technology) allows the determination of bonding strength of adhesive-bonded joints on a statistical basis of up to eight samples. Therefore, it is obvious to ensure the continuous handling and identical processing of an octet of samples within the entire process chain of wet-chemical cleaning, plasma-chemical pre-treatment, bonding of samples, and testing of bonding strength. Within the multiple-sample bonding set-up (MPKV-technology) a defined bonding pressure can be adjusted regardless the actual number of samples. A comparison of single- and multiple-sample approach is made for bonding strength of selected adhesives, double-sided adhesive tapes and different material combinations [stainless steel (V2A) vs. stainless steel, polyamide (PA), or polypropylene (PP)]. It is shown that both technologies improve reliability of results
