Verformung und Gefügetransformation bei Schwingungsverschleiß von austenitischen FeCrNi-Legierungen
(2004)
Morphological and compositional features regarding blue and yellow pigments used in glazed ceramics from Portugal are investigated by means of a SEM/EDX system. Fragments of samples produced in the main pottery-making centres between the XVIXVIII centuries (Lisbon and Coimbra) were the objects of study. The main question to be answered is whether there are differences in the manufacturing procedures employed. For this purpose, two types of samples were analysed: faiences and wall-tiles (the famous 'Azulejos', in Portuguese). Differences between the manufacturing techniques of the two production centres were veritably found. The expected linkage between Fe–Co–Ni–As–Bi was challenging to investigate. Thus, Co was found in Fe- or Ni-rich structures, but with no structural connection to As or Bi. However, the As-needle-like structures were always identified in blue regions. One interesting finding related particularly to the blue pigment was the presence of SnO2 agglomerates throughout the whole glaze, which suggests its intentional addition for 'lightening' the well known dark Co blue. Concerning the yellow pigment differences established in the crystal shape and size are indicative of different firing temperatures used.
Frass (fine powdery refuse or fragile perforated wood produced by the activity of boring insects) of larvae of the European house borer (EHB) and of drywood termites was tested as a natural and novel feedstock for 3D-printing of wood-based materials. Small particles produced by the drywood termite Incisitermes marginipennis and the EHB Hylotrupes bajulus during feeding in construction timber, were used. Frass is a powdery material of particularly consistent quality that is essentially biologically processed wood mixed with debris of wood and faeces. The filigree-like particles flow easily permitting the build-up of woodbased structures in a layer wise fashion using the Binder Jetting printing process. The Quality of powders produced by different insect species was compared along with the processing steps and properties of the printed parts. Drywood termite frass with a Hausner Ratio HR = 1.1 with ρBulk = 0.67 g/cm3 and ρTap = 0.74 g/cm3 was perfectly suited to deposition of uniformly packed layers in 3D printing. We suggest that a variety of naturally available feedstocks could be used in environmentally responsible approaches to scientific material sciences/additive manufacturing.
A new cocrystal of pyrazinamide with oxalic acid was prepared mechanochemically and characterized by PXRD, Raman spectroscopy, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, DTA-TG, and SEM. Based on powder X-ray diffraction data the structure was solved. The formation pathway of the reaction was studied in situ using combined synchrotron PXRD and Raman spectroscopy. Using oxalic acid dihydrate the initially neat grinding turned into a rapid self-accelerated liquid-assisted grinding process by the release of crystallization water. Under these conditions, the cocrystal was formed directly within two minutes.
The synthesis of the polymorphic cocrystal caffeine:anthranilic acid was investigated to obtain a better understanding of the processes leading to the formation of different polymorphic forms. In the case of these cocrystal polymorphs synthesized by liquid-assisted grinding a distinct influence of the dipole moment of the solvent was found. A pre-coordination between the solvent molecules and the caffeine:anthranilic acid cocrystal could be identified in the formation of form II. In the case of form II the solvent can be regarded as a catalyst. The formation pathway of each polymorph was evaluated using synchrotron X-ray diffraction.
