Chemical companies must find new paths to successfully survive in a changing environment. The potential of digital technologies belongs to these. Flexible and modular chemical plants can produce various high-quality products using multi-purpose equipment with short down-times between campaigns and reduce time to market for new products. Intensified continuous production plants allow for difficult to produce compounds.
Therefore, fully automated “chemical” process control along with real-time quality control are prerequisites to such concepts and thus should be based on “chemical” information. The advances of a fully automated NMR sensor were exploited, using a given pharmaceutical lithiation reaction as an example process within a modular pilot plant. A commercially available benchtop NMR spectrometer was integrated to the full requirements of an automated chemical production environment such as , e.g., explosion safety, field communication, and robust evaluation of sensor data. It was thereof used for direct loop advanced process control and real-time optimization of the process. NMR appeared as preeminent online analytical tool and allowed using a modular data analysis tool, which even served as reliable reference method for further PAT applications.
In future, such fully integrated and intelligently interconnecting “smart” systems and processes can speed up the high-quality production of specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
The initial focus of this research was on the development of a general workflow for the documentation and monitoring of historical stained glass windows using structured light scanning.
Therefore windows from different churches, time periods and with different corrosion and damage phenomena were scanned before and after conservation measures.

Regardless of its ban in agricultural use, the triazine derivative terbutryn is still used as a biocide against biofouling in building materials, such as façade colors and roof tiles. From there, it is washed off and may contaminate soil and surface waters, where it shows ecotoxicological behavior. For understanding of these leaching processes, analytical methods that can detect terbutryn in traces are necessary. In contrast to separation methods (Gas (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC)) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS), enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) have proven to be adequate tools for environmental monitoring. Compared to GC-or LC-MS, they are cheap, require only limited time and experimental expertise and enable high throughput. For quantification of terbutryn, EIAs have been established, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 50 ng L-1. For leaching experiments however, a lower LOD would be advantageous.
For detection of terbutryn we developed a direct competitive ELISA based on a monoclonal antibody: Terbutryn and an enzyme-terbutryn conjugate (“tracer”) compete for the binding sites of the immobilized antibody. The bound tracer converts a colourless substrate into a blue-coloured product, which can be detected via spectrophotometry. For quantification of terbutryn, a sigmoidal calibration curve is used. For establishing of the EIA, a new tracer based on a terbutryn surrogate (“hapten”) was synthesized. After optimization of the experimental conditions, the immunoassay exhibited a more than ten-fold increased sensitivity (LOD: 3 ng L-1), high stability against sample compounds (Ca2+, NaCl) and lower cross-reactivities against structurally related compounds, than reported before. Analysis of spiked samples was possible with high precision (inter-assay CV: < 10 %) and accuracy (recoveries from spiked samples: 89 % ± 10%). We therefore propose it as quick and reliable method for leaching studies of terbutryn out of building materials.
Museums worldwide are equipped with different display cases. Exhibit display cases should protect cultural objects from dust as well as from mechanical and physical damage. To ensure a stable climate inside the display cases, a low air exchange rate is maintained. Typically air exchange rates are often smaller than 0.1 d 1, which can result in rising concentrations of potential harmful immissions inside of the display cases due to emissions from materials. Especially high concentrations of organic acids, which can emit from e.g. sealing materials, can produce damage of cultural objects. In 2012 BAM introduced a procedure witch is called: BEMMA-Scheme (Bewertung von Emissionen aus Materialien für Museumsausstattungen) which stands for: “Assessment of Emissions from Materials for Museum Equipment”. Micro chambers are used for VOC emission tests of display case construction materials, e.g. textiles, plastics, sealing material, coatings and others. Each sampling procedure is carried out in duplicate. Emissions like formic acid, acetic acid, formaldehyde and oximes are excluded and the sum of emissions of VVOCs, VOCs and SVOCs is limited. For a positive assessment all listed criteria must be fulfilled; otherwise the display construction material fails the BEMMA scheme. The BEMMA scheme is not a guarantee for an emission free display case, but a necessary requirement for the choice of suitable materials for emission and immission reduced display cases.
Herein we present the data for a newly developed immunoassay for the determination of amoxicillin (AMX) in water samples using a commercially available monoclonal anti-AMX antibody. During optimization and testing of the assay, we observed a significant decrease of the C-value (IC50) of the ELISA calibration curves with aged standard solutions. Running the assay with standard solutions of synthesized AMX hydrolysis products revealed that this decreased C-value could be attributed mainly to the hydrolysis product amoxicilloic acid. Therefore, the limit of detection of the ELISA for AMX determination in water could be enhanced by either hydrolyzing the samples or testing for amoxicilloic acid as marker substance.

Traceable and reliable chemical element analysis of aerosols by X-ray spectrometry was investigated using aerosol samples from field campaigns which have been measured in the GIXRF-beamline at BESSY.
The reference-free XRF approach allows for a traceable analysis of the mass deposition.
Traceable quantification by means of XRF can be transfered to benchtop instrumentation used in the laboratory Chemical and dimensional analysis of deposited aerosol allows for a comprehensive analysis of aerosols, e.g. for toxicity assessment and determination of the source The folowing elements could be identified and quantified in the field samples: Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, W, Pb.
Measurements of aerosol particles are vital for enforcing EU air quality regulations to protect human health, and for research on climate change effects. Although metrics such as PM10 and PM2.5 are currently in use, the level of uncertainty of aerosol metrics is too high and the traceability is insufficient. The project AEROMET, which has been started in June 2017 aims at implementing improvements in a) the uncertainty of particle mass, size and number concentration measurements and b) in the characterization of regulated components in airborne particles. Both are demanded by existing networks within the EU as well as by global atmospheric research.
On-site measurement campaigns
One of the objects is the application of mobile x-ray spectroscopy techniques combined with aerosol sampling techniques for quantifying particle compositions in the field for real time analysis. During two in-field measurement campaigns in Budapest, Hungary in May 2018 and Cassino, Italy in September 2018 the size dependent mass concentrations of specific elements in ambient aerosols were monitored under dynamic conditions.
Typically, airborne particles are sampled on filter substrates. During this project new sampling methods with specially designed substrate holders for an in-situ TXRF analysis were developed and applied for the first time. This approach allows a direct time and size resolved analysis without laborious digestion steps and a reduced risk of contamination.
Aerosol particles were sampled in a 13-stage DLPI impactor - size range from 0,03 µm to 10 µm - which was equipped with special adapters for acrylic discs of 30 mm diameter, serving as substrates. TXRF analysis was performed on site with the transportable spectrometer S2 PICOFOX (Bruker Nano GmbH) equipped with a Mo X-ray tube and a 30 mm² Silicon Drift Detector (SDD). Excitation conditions were 50 kV, 600 µA, measurement time 1000 s. Quantification was based on internal standardization using 50 ng of Y in solution, which was pipetted into the centre of the discs prior to sampling.
At moderate air pollution levels, i.e. PM10 ~ 20 µg/m³, sampling times of less than 2 hours were enough for the detection of elements in different particle size bins. The in-situ approach and the high sensitivity of TXRF enables the observation of rather quick changes in the quantity and distribution of elements in an ambient aerosol on the day of sampling, as the below example from the Cassino field campaign on 11 Sept. 2018 shows: The analysis of the morning and afternoon sampling shifts reveals the occurrence of the elements Fe, Ca and Si in different size bins as well as their significant temporal change in respective mass concentrations over the day while the distributions of several other elements in the aerosol remain unchanged.
The validation of these results by backup measurements is planned.
Simple particulate matter sensors are gaining popularity due to their low price, easy handling and good temporal resolution. In this presentation, we report on the performance of a Sharp optical PM sensor GP2Y1010AU0F, which costs less than 15 €.
The sensor is built around an infrared emitting diode (ILED) and a phototransistor detecting the light scattered from the aerosol particle. An electronic circuit shapes the detected light in a pulsed signal. The manufacturer advises sampling the output signal 280 microseconds after the ILED pulse. The measured output voltage is an indicator of dust concentration.
We have built two identical simple PM monitoring devices using Raspberry Pi 3 computer interfacing the PM sensor with Microchip’s MCP3002 ADC via SPI. The ADC is capable of more than 100 ksamples/s at 10-bit resolution. The Rpi3 was pulsing the sensor at 10Hz, digitizing and saving the data and sending the results wirelessly.
Sensor’s output pulse shape was sampled with 10 microsecond time steps and saved, thus making offline analysis possible. A time jitter of output pulses can be observed and suggests a peak fitting as a better approach to the signal readout compared to the single sampling at a fixed time after pulse triggering We compared both methods.
A mobile Bruker S2 Picofox TXRF spectrometer has been used in two field campaigns within the EMPIR env07 AEROMET project for the on-site analysis of cascade impactor aerosol samples. The results show that even at moderate air pollution levels – i.e.PM10 fairly below 20 μg/m³ - element mass concentrations in air in the range of 100 pg/m³could be measured in up to 13 size bins after sampling times of less than only 0.5 days.
For a better understanding of the damage of glued wood tensile tests on miniature specimens made of glued spruce wood with acoustic emission and in-situ synchrotron-based X-ray computer microtomography has been monitored. As adhesive, urea-formaldehyde resin was used. For comparison purposes, tensile tests were carried out on solid wood and bonded miniature tensile shear samples with acoustic emission. The acoustic emission signals of all experiments were with classified pattern recognition. This resulted in two classes of signals for each two frequency peaks. In one class was the low-frequency, in the other the higher frequency peak of higher intensity, but this essentially independent from the structure (solid wood or plywood) and the size scale of the test specimens. The influence of the adhesive layers was determined on plywood test specimens in laboratory scale and on miniature test specimens with an adhesive layer and selected fiber orientations examined. This gave evidence that the sound emission signals from the failure of the adhesive layer presumably of the class with low frequency signals peak in the range of services can be assigned.

Alkali-activated materials are ideal for the repair of concrete structures in harsh environmental conditions due to their high durability in chemically aggressive environments. However, slag-based mortars, in particular, are prone to shrinkage and associated cracks. In this respect, the application of steel fibres is one solution to reduce the formation of shrinkage induced cracks and to improve post cracking behaviour of these mortars. This study investigated the influence of two different types of steel fibres on the tensile properties of two alkali-activated mortars. Direct tensile tests and single fibre pull-outs were performed to analyse the determining failure modes both on macro and micro scale. Mechanical testing was accompanied by non-destructive testing methods such as digital image correlation and acoustic emission for a detailed analysis of the fracture process.

CEQAT-DGHS Interlaboratory Test Programme for Chemical Safety - Need of Test Methods Validation -
(2019)
Safety experts, manufacturers, suppliers, importers, employers or consumers must be able to rely on the validity of safety-related test methods and on correct test results and assessments in the laboratory. Via the eChemPortal lots of data from the REACH registration dossiers are available. However, the quality and correctness of the information remains in the responsibility of the data submitter. Unfortunately, we found more or less appropriate information on physicochemical properties and concluded that more quality or adequacy of any data submitted will be needed.
Interlaboratory tests play a decisive role in assessing the reliability of test results. Interlaboratory tests on different test methods have been performed by Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und –prüfung (BAM) and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in collaboration with the QuoData GmbH during the last 10 years. Significant differences between the results of the participating laboratories were observed in all interlaboratory tests. The deviations of the test results were not caused only by laboratory faults but also by deficiencies of the test method.
In view of the interlaboratory test results the following conclusions can be drawn:
• To avoid any discrepancy on classification and labelling of chemicals it should become state of the art to use validated test methods and the results accompanied by the measurement uncertainty.
• A need for improvement is demonstrated for all examined test methods. Thus, interlaboratory tests shall initially aim at the development, improvement and validation of the test methods and not on proficiency tests.
• The laboratory management and the practical execution of the tests need to be improved in many laboratories.
• The term "experience of the examiner" must be seen critically: A "long experience with many tests" is not necessarily a guarantee for correct results.
Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is an industrial scale starting material e.g. for polymer production (PTFE, FEP). When ignited the chemically unstable TFE is capable of decomposing in an explosive way. Explosion propagation through pipe systems of production plants have led to damage and fatalities within the last seven decades.
Incident analyses identified compression heat a relevant source of ignition. Chemical plants consist of pipes, vessels, separating valves, strainers and other components. Before restarting the process after maintenance work, different parts of the plant components could be filled with TFE, nitrogen or air at different initial pressures ranging from vacuum or atmospheric to TFE at operating pressure. Valve opening procedures may cause a temperature increase in the gas phase. Compression takes place at polytropic conditions. Heat losses cannot be neglected. The temperature development in the gas depends upon the surface to volume ratio of the enclosure, geometrical influences, the state of gas flow, how fast the valve opens, and the heat capacity of the gas being compressed.
Laboratory scale tests (Meyer, 2009) revealed ignition of TFE/air due to compression heat. Tests in pipes of 28 mm inner diameter, i.e. already industrial scale, were performed by (Kluge et. al., 2016). In the present contribution initial test results from a 63 mm pipe will be compared with existing 28 mm pipe data. A description of the experimental setup as well as an explanation of the hazard diagram will be given.
Furthermore, a method allowing for the identification of hazardous conditions will be discussed.
In well-annealed thin polymer films, with non-repulsive polymer/substrate interactions, an irreversibly adsorbed layer is expected to from. These adsorbed layers have shown greate potential for technological applications. However, their growth kinetics and molecular dynamics are still not fully understood. This is partly due to the hard accessibility of these layers in thin films. Here, the irreversibly adsorbed layers of homopolymer thin films are revealed by solvent-leaching experiments. First, the growth kinetics of these layers is investigated as a function of annealing time, annealing temperature, leaching time and the original filme thickness. The film thickness, topography and the quality of the adsorbed layer is controlled by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Secondly, the molecular mobility of the adsorbed layer is investigated by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS). A recently developed nanostructured capacitor arrangement is employed to measure the layer with a free surface. The results are quantitatively compared and discussed with respect to recently published work.
Conventional fertilisers have their disadvantages as nutrient release is not synchronised with the demand of plants. Several approaches of "next generation fertilisers" are aiming at controlled nutrient release. Recycling fertilisers are often not soluble in water but fully plant available. They are suitable raw materials for the production of new types of controlled release fertilisers.
The need for sustainable and effective usage of limited resources like water and soil becomes more and more important due to increasing populations and their need for food. The research initiative BonaRes funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, develops strategies to use soil as a sustainable resource for the bio-economy. One part of this initiative is the Intelligence for soil (I4S) project. It deals with the development of an integrated system for the site-specific soil fertility management. The goal of the project is to establish a mobile sensor platform for soil mapping as well as to apply soil and crop models to deal with the high amount of produced data. These models are going to be used to formulate recommendations on the use of fertilizers and to gain an improvement on the soil fertility. Using these information’s, the environmental pollution with substances like nitrate contained in fertilizers can be decreased. Furthermore, the costs for farmers can be decreased if only the amounts of fertilizer actually needed are applied to the field.
The task for the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) is the installation and optimization of a handheld XRF sensor for the online measurement directly on the field. It is a non-destructive technique and quite suitable for the online approach due to a low maintenance in the sample preparation and a fast and simultaneous multi element analysis. The elements of interest in this case are light elements like phosphorus, calcium and potassium. One of the major tasks is the calibration of the sensor for different soils, therefore, calibration models are evolved to deal with different types of soil. Due to the multi element analysis, micro and macro nutrients can be determined simultaneously. Those differ a lot in their contents which makes it inevitable to optimize and adapt the measuring procedure. By analyzing soil, its always important to deal with matrix effects, that is why the influence of different disturbances like the moisturize content and the grain size needs to be investigated.
The XRF is only one of many sensors that combined give customized fertilizing recommendations in the end.

Remote gas sensors mounted on mobile robots enable the mapping of gas distributions in large or hardly accessible areas. A challenging task, however, is the generation of threedimensional distribution maps from these gas measurements.
Suitable reconstruction algorithms can be adapted, for instance, from the field of computed tomography (CT), but both their performance and strategies for selecting optimal measuring poses must be evaluated. For this purpose simulations are used, since, in contrast to field tests, they allow repeatable conditions. Although several simulation tools exist, they lack realistic models of remote gas sensors. Recently, we introduced a model for a Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) gas sensor taking into account the conical shape of its laser beam. However, the novel model has not yet been validated with experiments. In this paper, we compare our model with a real sensor device and show that the assumptions made hold.
Protection from explosion events requires the determination of key safety parameters like lower explosion limit. maximum Explosion over-pressure. and maximum rate of pressure rise. These Parameters are routinely obtained through standard tests performed typically either in a 20 L -sphere or a 1 m3-container. But several aspects are worth a closer investigation. Firstly, the test apparatus must be able to disperse a fairly uniform dust cloud. However. previous investigations showed that actually the current dispersion System can be improved. Secondly, the influence of humidity on the explosivity is not considered in current standards. lt is just stated that the relative humidity should be checked and noted down.
though some provisions exist in American standards. Thirdly. the ignition delay time is sometimes modified to study the impact of the dust cloud turbulence on flame propagation but is often misunderstood.
Maybe these aspects have not been thoroughly considered for micron powders. However. in the case of nanopowders. the importance of these influencing factors was shown in order to duly evaluate explosion parameters. Experimental evidences confirm these aspects and alternative solutions will be presented.
Most fluorinated hydrocarbons that shall replace refrigerants with high GWP, like R134a, are flammable. For evaluating inertization measures for explosion protection, flammability of low-GWP refrigerants R1234yf, R32 and R1132a blended with carbon dioxide, nitrogen and argon were studied experimentally in a closed autoclave at atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, a calculation method was adapted to reduce the experimental costs for flammability studies on these gas mixtures. For igniting R1234yf in the closed autoclave a newly developed ignition system was used that allows generating electric arcs with high ignition energy. Gas mixtures containing the mildly flammable R1234yf and R32 could be inerted by adding much less inert gas than mixtures containing R1132a, which is more similar to unfluorinated hydrocarbons regarding the explosion regions. By using the adapted model of constant adiabatic flame temperature profiles estimating the explosion limits of fluorinated hydrocarbons was possible with similar accuracy as for unfluorinated hydrocarbons.

Reinforced concrete (RC) is used as structural material in most diverse civil engineering applications. For the variability of its physical properties it is still an engineering challenge to meet all necessary requirements for the prediction of dynamic effects under impact loading. In this paper, investigations are shown within the scope of quantifying and evaluating the damage caused by an impact. The experimental investigations are performed in the field of low- and medium-velocity impact. The chosen flat nose shape results in small penetrations on the top side and scabbing on the bottom side. The plate is scanned with an adapted planar tomographic examination after the impact, and the damage is analysed, afterwards. Cracks and spalling are made visible with a reconstruction. The numerical model validated on the tomographic results justifies the application for further predictions of the damage description.

Glass strength and fatigue is limited by surface cracks. As subcritical crack growth (SCCG) is governed by ambient humidity, stress corrosion at the crack tip is widely accepted to be the underlying mechanism. However, as water is known to have decisive effect on glass properties and can rapidly enter the crack tip near glass region, SCCG could be affected by such water related phenomena. We tried to mimic these effects studying water dissolution and speciation, mechanical properties, and SCCG in water-bearing glasses. For this purpose, glasses up to 8 wt% water have been prepared by means of high-pressure melting of glass powder - water mixtures.
As part of this effort, SCCG in dry and hydrous commercial micros¬cope slide glass (CW = 6 wt%) was studied in double cantilever beam (DCB) geometry and sub-Tg relaxation was measured by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA).
For SCCG in ambient air (24% r.h.), SCCG was promoted by the presence of 6wt% bulk water with respect to the dry glass. On the other hand, stress intensity values, KI, required to cause slow crack growth (v < 10-6 ms-1) resemble literature findings for float glass of similar composition in liquid water, which might represent the maximum possible promoting effect of ambient water on SCCG.
For SCCG in vacuum (10-3 mbar), dissolved bulk water causes even more pronounced effects. Most strikingly, it strongly decreases the slope of the log v(KI)-curve, which is a measure of dissipated energy during fracture. A strong increase of sub-Tg relaxation with increasing water content was confirmed by DMA. As a consequence, slow crack growth occurs at KI values as measured in the dry glass whereas fast crack growth occurs at much larger KI than that of the dry glass. Kinks and shoulders shown by the inert log v(KI)-curve indicate that bulk water does not simply affect bulk mechanical properties.
The application of phased arrays in either linear or matrix arrangement in combination with signal processing opens the door for the mechanized inspection of different thin wall materials itself as well as their joining methods.
Modern lightweight components are typically manufactured by a composition of different types of e.g. steels, metals, fiber reinforced plastics and glass. Dependent on the material combinations e.g. welding, brazing, bonding, cladding or coating may be applied during the manufacturing process to join different semi-finished products to form the component.
The resulting complex material composition and different damage mechanisms pose new challenges to non-destructive testing with ultrasound due to the different material properties and the overall arrangement of the materials employed.
The sound field variation capabilities of array probes may be helpful to overcome some of these challenges if adapted to the specific inspection task.
Examples for the non-destructive mechanized phased array inspection of different types of materials and joining methods will be presented.
Ambient water influences sub-critical crack growth (SCCG) from microscopic surface flaws, leading to stress corrosion at the crack tip. The complex influence of humidity accelerating slow crack propagation (region I) is well studied only for dry commercial NCS glass (< 1000 ppm water). To shed light on this influence, the effect of water is mimicked by studying SCCG water-bearing glasses. For this purpose, water-bearing silicate glasses of 8 wt% total water were synthesized at 0.5 GPa and compared to dry glasses. SCCG was measured in double cantilever beam geometry. For dry glasses, 3 trends in crack velocity vs. stress intensity, KI, curve were found. The slope in region I increases in the order NCS < NBS < BaCS < NZnS < NAS glass. The velocity range of region II, reflecting the transition between corrosion affected and inert crack growth (region III), varies within one order of magnitude among these glasses. The KI region of inert crack growth strongly scatters between 0.4 and 0.9 MPam0.5. For hydrous glasses, it is found that water strongly decreases Tg, form a new sub-Tg internal friction peak caused by molecular water, and makes the glasses more prone to SCCG. The observed trends will be discussed in terms of the effects of Youngs Modulus on the strain energy release rate and energy dissipation related to mechanical glass relaxation phenomena.

The cleaning of black carbon covered Italian marble and limestone sculptures is a challenging task for restorers and scientists, especially when black soot is penetrated into the porous surface of a stone.
Numerous sculptures of the Bode-Museum underwent two domestic fires at the repository in Berlin in May 1945, where soot damaged the surface of these artworks. Promising results in removing black layers were achieved by the application of modified gels to artificially weathered and sooted Carrara marble mockups. However, transferring the cleaning method to original samples requires a cautious proceeding with respect to short-term and long-term implications. To understand physico-chemical reactions, the analytics of gel-treated marble surfaces is of essential importance.
Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used to gain insights into surface chemistry and the distribution of chemical groups or fragments and enable a deeper understanding of the functionality of the applied gels and of the efficiency of tested cleaning processes. Depth profiling by ToF-SIMS is introduced as a tool to study the penetration behavior of applied cleaning chemicals.
The contribution presents the analytical methods, their possibilities and challenges, and summarizes initial results of this study.
Our experimental knowledge about the inks of antiquity and late antiquity rarely goes beyond their visual description. In rare cases, inks typology has been determined by means of microscopy and reflectography, i.e. using their physical and optical properties, respectively. Since carbon, plant and iron gall inks belong to different classes of compounds they could be easily distinguished had only pure inks been used. Even these crude observations suggest that the inks used differed greatly in their composition.
Reconstruction of the ink recipes with the help of advanced non-destructive analytical techniques could serve as a powerful accessory for in the studies of ancient papyri.
The proposed paper will present a short survey of the methods of material analysis and the challenges offered by ancient inks. The examples of the ink studies from the collections of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and Egyptian Museum in Berlin will conclude the paper.
Alkali silica reaction (ASR) is a major concrete durability problem resulting in significant maintenance and reconstruction costs for concrete infrastructures all over the world. To determine whether an aggregate is potentially reactive, accelerated concrete tests are used. Aim of this study is the chemical and microstructural characterization of ASR-products formed under the performance conditions of motorway pavements and during subsequent tests on the remaining ASR susceptibility. Samples were taken from concrete motorway pavements. Some of the samples already showed first indications for beginning damages whereas others showed deteriorations only after applying a performance testing procedure for the estimation of future risk of ASR damage. In a first step ASR-products were identified by polarized light microscopy in thin sections. The reaction products where then analyzed by Raman Spectroscopy and finally the chemical composition of the ASR-products was identified by SEM with EDX.
The results indicate that most reaction products show an increasing Ca/Si-ratio with progressive crack length. If an ASR-product develops inside an aggregate and moves through the cement paste, it has a high (Na+K)/Si-ratio at the beginning which decreases with increasing distance from its place of origin. The Raman spectra of the ASR-products are characterized by two broad bands indicating specific Q-species of different amorphous gel networks. Within the scope of the analysis distinctions in the microstructure and the chemical composition of the ASR-gels were detected relating to various conditions of accelerated testing.

The OECD test guidelines (TGs) for testing chemicals have been widely used for regulatory purposes all over the world since the establishment of the Mutual Acceptance of Data (MAD) principle in 1984. This MAD principle ensures that, if a chemical is tested under the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) conditions accordingly to an OECD TG, the data should be accepted in all OECD countries. The TGs have been developed, harmonized, internationally validated (round robin tests) and adopted by OECD countries to be used for the physical-chemical characterisation, fate estimation, and hazard identification for risk assessment of various chemicals. In addition to the TGs, OECD Guidance Documents (GDs) usually provide guidance on how to use TGs and how to interpret the results. These GDs do not have to be fully experimentally validated, and hence they are not under MAD, but they are based on relevant published scientific research.
But are the existing TGs and the related GDs applicable and adequate for the regulatory testing of nanomaterials? In general, for nanomaterials it is accepted that most of the "endpoints" or more precisely measurement variables are applicable. However, for some endpoints new or amended TGs are needed. In addition, several GDs are needed to give more precise advice on the test performance in order to gain regulatory relevant data on nanomaterials.
The new OECD test guideline will address the following four main steps in the determination of the length and width distributions of fibers: sample preparation, image acquisition, data evaluation and uncertainty analysis. As the sample preparation has to be optimized for each material, general quality criteria will be given in the protocol. For full visibility of a fiber the appropriate resolution has to be chosen. In the data evaluation the length and diameter of each fiber will be determined concurrently to allow for application of different regulatory definitions. The quality of the results critically depends on the sample preparation as well as the data evaluation. In this step the classification rules have to be formulated and followed accurately in order to optimize reproducibility of the method. The SOP will be validated in an international round robin test, which is planned for 2018/2019.
The properties of nanomaterials are influenced not only by their chemical composition but also by physical properties (such as size, geometry and crystal structure). For the reliable determination and assessment of behaviour and effects of nanomaterials as well as for the determination of the exposure of humans and environment a comprehensive physical-chemical characterization of nanomaterials is essential. This is an important prerequisite to identify them as nanomaterials and to interpret and compare test results and - in future – to forecast interaction and effects of nanomaterials.
In 2006, the OECD launched a sponsorship program for the testing of nanomaterials in which 11 nanomaterials were thoroughly investigated using a variety of methods. The aim of the project was, among other things, to find out where problems occur and where there are gaps in the measurement and test procedures and where are changes required. An important outcome of the sponsorship program was the finding that the OECD Test Guidelines should in several cases be extended to the specific needs in testing of nanomaterials. The existing standardized test methods of the OECD for physical-chemical characterization have not been developed for nanomaterials in particular. A high demand for an extension of the test guidelines was identified. Germany complied with the OECD's request in 2017 and has agreed to extend the “Test Guideline on Particle Size Distribution / Fiber Length and Diameter Distributions Test Guideline” for Manufactured Nanomaterials (MN). UBA commissioned BAM and BAuA with the preparation of the Test Guideline. The aim of the project is the development of a harmonized test protocol for a valid and reproducible determination of particle size and size distribution which is one of the most relevant physical-chemical properties for MNs.
Different measuring methods provide different results for the size distribution of the particles. This is caused by the different measuring principles of the methods. Each method measures a specific parameter that ultimately determines particle size. First, the measured quantity differs for each method (Scattered light intensity, 2D image / projection, electric mobility, etc.). Second, the calculated diameters of the MN may differ (Feret Diameter, Area Projection, Mobility Diameter, Aerodynamic Diameter, Hydrodynamic Diameter). Third, a measuring method provides a size distribution which is measured either mass-based, surface-based or number-based. A conversion between the results requires additional parameters and thus possibly increases the measurement error.
In addition to the technical differences, the individual parameters are strongly influenced by the structure and material of the nanoparticles. For example, a surface functionalization can lead to very different results in the size distribution. The suitability of measurement methods differs with the material of the MN. As a result, two very different results can be measured for the particle size distribution using two different methods, which are nevertheless both correct. Several large projects in recent years therefore concluded that nanomaterials should be characterized by at least two complementary method. Imaging techniques are regarded as one of these methods for the characterization, the complementary methods are supposed to be statistical methods.
The different results for the size distribution of nanomaterials become problematic for the registration of new MN. A comparable and reproducible size distribution is a prerequisite for a standardized registration. In the future, the particle size distribution in the EU will also decide on the classification of a substance as a nanomaterial or as a non-nanomaterial. Especially in borderline cases, a standardized and comparable measurement methodology is therefore essential.
Predictive Methods for Determining the Thermal Decomposition Properties of Hazardous Substances
(2019)
Due to the fast development and availability of computers, predictive approaches are increasingly used in the evaluation process of hazardous substances complementary to experiments. Their use was recommended as alternative to experimental testing by the REACH regulation to complete the lack of knowledge on properties for existing substances that must be registered before 2018 (upon quantities). Among the proposed predictive approaches, Quantitative Structure Property Relationships (QSPR) are powerful methods to predict macroscopic properties from the only molecular structure of substances.
In that context, the HAZPRED project (2015-2018, founded by the SAF€RA consortium) aims to develop theoretical models (e.g. QSPR) and small-scale tests to predict complex physico-chemical properties (e.g. thermal stability, explosivity) of hazardous substances to complete the lack of knowledge on these hazardous substances quickly or to understand their decomposition behaviour better.
In particular, this contribution will present the work done in this project on the physical hazards of organic peroxides and self-reactive substances: gathering of existing experimental data, new experimental campaigns, review of existing models and proposition of new estimation methods.
The particle size distribution is considered the most relevant information for nanoscale property identification and material characterization. The current OECD test guideline on particle size and size distribution (TG 110) is not applicable to ‘nano-sized’ objects. In this project we thus develop a new OECD test guideline for the measurement of the size and size distribution of particles and fibers with at least one dimension in the nanoscale. A fiber is defined as an object having an aspect ratio of length/diameter l/d >3. The width and length of each fiber should be measured concurrently.
In order to measure the particle size distributions, many techniques are available. 9 methods for particles and 2 methods for fibres have been tested in a prevalidation study and appropriate methods will be compared in an interlaboratory round robin test starting in February 2019.
This paper describes the development of a semi-automatic gas measurement device presenting potentially a broad range of applications, noteworthy in the agricultural sector. Non-reversible fluorescent molecular sensors were designed and syn-thesized. Upon, integration into a hydrogel matrix with an optimal ratio of co-solvents, the sensors reacting selectively to ammonia were illuminated by excitation light to produce a concentration-correlated fluorescence emission. An automated mechanical-elec-trical device initiates a given gas mixture and thus simulates con-centrations similar to a threshold value. The aim of this project is to develop a sensor or a low-cost method which can monitor low concentrations of harmful gases and aid in their elimination or regulation in livestock housing, barns or stables.
Severe mechanical fatigue conditions for worldwide proliferating windfarms are a Major challenge for high-performance concrete in towers, connecting joints and foundations of wind turbines. High-performance concrete offers potential for the application in offshore windfarms, not only regarding its good mechanical, but also chemical resistivity due to low diffusivity in the highly densified microstructure. For a more reliable fatigue assessment, monitoring based on nondestructive testing can be a valuable complement to design rules. Both approaches demand reliable experimental data, information about scalability and the development of standardized testing methods. This article presents results of an ongoing research program of BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung), which is a part of a joint national project (WinConFat) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The subproject implemented by BAM examines the fatigue behavior in dependence of size and slenderness for varying concrete strength at different stress levels. Besides fatigue strength, nondestructive testing is carried out additionally.
Methods used are strain measurement and ultrasonic testing. The change of strain, stiffness and ultrasonic pulse velocity in the fatigue process is discussed. Results disclose a deeper insight into the damage process under cyclic loading of high-performance concrete and contribute to improve nondestructive monitoring.
CEQAT-DGHS Interlaboratory Test Programme for Chemical Safety - Need of Test Methods Validation
Despite of the significant advances in AM process optimization there is still a lack of experimental results and understanding regarding the mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of AMparts, especially in loading conditions typical for safety-relevant applications e.g. in the aerospace or power engineering. Within the scope of the presented investigations, a characterization of the fatigue behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V in the low cycle fatigue regime was carried out in the range of 0.3 to 1.0 % strain amplitude at room temperature, 250°C and 400°C. The Ti-6Al-4V specimens are machined out of lean cylindrical rods, which were fabricated using powder laser metal deposition (LMD) with an improved build-up strategy. The improved strategy incorporates variable track overlap ratios to achieve a constant growth in the shell and core area. The low-cycle-fatigue behavior is described based on cyclic deformation curves and strain-based fatigue life curves. The lifetimes are fitted based on the Manson-Coffin-Basquin relationship. A characterization of the microstructure and the Lack-of-Fusion (LoF)-defect-structure in the as-built state is performed using optical light microscopy and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) respectively. The failure mechanism under loading is described in terms of LoF-defects-evolution and crack growth mechanism based on an interrupted LCF test with selected test parameters. After failure, scanning electron microscopy, digital and optical light microscopy and CT are used to describe the failure mechanisms both in the longitudinal direction and in the cross section of the specimens. The fatigue lives obtained are comparable with results from previous related studies and are shorter than those of traditionally manufactured (wrought) Ti-6Al-4V. In this study new experimental data and understanding of the mechanical behavior under application-relevant loading conditions (high temperature, cyclic plasticity) is gained. Furthermore, a better understanding of the role of LoFdefects and AM-typical microstructural features on the failure mechanism of LMD Ti-6Al-4V is achieved.

The life time of mechanical components in high temperature applications is basically determined by their workings. Corrosion determines the loss of material corresponding to the loss of the effective load-bearing section and consequently increasing stress levels. To improve the material selection for such applications a numerical life prediction corrosion model for different alloys and environments is needed. Based on the ferritic alloys FeCr and FeCrCo a first quantitative model is to be developed. For this purpose, the alloys are aged at 600°C, 650°C and 700°C in synthetic air under normal pressure for between 10 and 240 hours. The first objective is to establish a quantitative relationship between the oxidation rate as a function of composition and microstructure of the alloys. The influence of the inner interface as an essential parameter for transport by diffusion on the oxidation kinetics is discussed in this presentation.

The advantages of treating prefabricated components made of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UCPC) at 90 °C are largely recognized, while hydrothermal treatment at 185 °C and the corresponding saturation pressure of 1.1 MPa, in contrast, is not applied in building practice so far and was studied only by a few researchers.
In the research presented, the parameters pre-storage-time before treatment and dwell time in the autoclave were systematically varied. The results illustrate in which way compressive strength increases with the duration of treatment. Already samples which were only heated up and immediately cooled down show an increase in strength compared to the 28-day reference of about 10 %. After 20 h the maximum increase of about 25 % is reached. Interestingly the compressive strength of samples treated very long hardly decreases. It can be therefore concluded that for the composition investigated the achievable mechanical strength is not severely sensitive regarding the duration of the treatment.
Also, pre-storage times before autoclaving longer than 0.5 days showed no significant impact on strength development.
The phase composition measured by XRD exhibits significant changes compared to the reference. The amount of ettringite and portlandite have vanished, the cement clinker phases are substantially decreased and hydroxylellestadite and hydrogarnet are formed as new phases. The increase in strength can be assigned to an improved pozzolanic and hydraulic reaction. Contradictory to literature, there was found no tobermorite, a mineral which is known to be susceptible for disintegration at Long autoclaving duration. This explains why no significant strength loss appeared.
The low tensile strength of cement-based materials can be improved by the addition of fibres. In a joint research project, an industrial partner designed special coatings for polymer and carbon fibres by integrating surfactants and hydrophilic compounds. Aim of the developed functionalization was to ensure an even coverage of the fibre surfaces and to anchor them chemically in the cement-based matrix. Task of the BAM was to quantify the effect of the improved bond. In a first step a workable mortar adjusted to the strength of the tested fibres was developed and the fibre distribution assessed by light microscopy and computed tomography. To test the new coating for its efficiency to prevent cracking during hardening and to improve the loadbearing behaviour new test setups were developed or existing methods were adjusted.
The experiments showed that the functionalization leads to a reduction of the crack area measured after the exposure of the wet mortar to strong drying conditions in the wind channel. Regarding the Efficiency to mitigate shrinkage cracks the functionalisation turned out to be more efficient for fibres made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) than for carbon fibres. An improvement of the tensile strength after cracking of the cementitious matrix could only be documented for the coated carbon fibres. It could be quantified, however, only in the three-point bending tests because the fibres turned out to be too brittle for the applied single fibre pull-through test.
Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is characterised by its high compressive strength of more than 150 MPa and its high durability. Due to thermal treatment at 90°C a strength comparable to the 28-days-strength can be achieved immediately after the treatment and in some cases can be even further increased up to 30 %. The explanations for the increase in strength are the accelerated hydration of the clinker minerals and the intensified pozzolanic reaction contributing to a denser microstructure and hence, a high performance in compressive strength.
Former research shows that thermal treatment can lead to inhomogeneities in form of a visible zonation within the cross-section. The width of the margin increases with shorter pre-storage time before the thermal treatment and with omitting protective measures against desiccation during the treatment. Specimens exhibiting a zonation typically show a lower compressive strength compared to the undisturbed reference whereas changes in chemistry, mineral content and microstructure were not reported in detail.
In this study the zonation of thermally treated UHPC is investigated with respect to its chemistry, mineral composition and microstructure to allow predictions on durability and strength development. Measurements show a change in pore sizes, minerals phase composition and element distribution leading to the visible zonation and weaker bending tensile strength compared to the reference.
QI-FoKuS stands for „Quality Infrastructure – Research for Conformity Assessment and Safety“. Supported by the BMWi, a new recurring survey of companies was launched under this name in end-September 2019 in a joint project between the TU Berlin and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). The first company survey deals with the use and certification of management systems with a special focus on information security and the criteria for the selection of certification bodies.

Applications on Surface Functionalization by Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS)
(2019)
In recent years, the understanding on the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has led to an emerging variety of applications that modify the optical, mechanical and chemical properties of many materials. Such structures strongly depend on the used polarization and are formed usually after irradiation with ultrashort linearly polarized laser pulses. Some specific formation mechanisms to explain every situation are still to be uncovered, but the most accepted explanation relies on the interference of the incident laser beam with electromagnetic surface waves that propagate or scatter at the surface of the irradiated materials. This leads to an intensity modulation that is finally responsible for the selective ablation in the form of parallel structures with periodicities ranging from hundreds of nanometers up to some micrometers. The versatility when forming such structures is based on the high reproducibility with different wavelength, pulse duration and repetition rate laser sources, customized micro- and nanometric spatial resolutions and compatibility with industrially relevant processing speeds when combined with fast scanning devices. In this contribution, we review the latest applications in the rapidly emerging field of surface functionalization through LIPSS, including biomimetic functionalities on fluid transport, control of the wetting properties, specific optical responses in technical materials, improvement of tribological performance on metallic surfaces and bacterial and cell growth for medical devices among many others.

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a serious Problem concerning the deterioration of concrete. This leads to significant maintenance and reconstruction costs for concrete infrastructures all over the world. The geographical regions, which play a major role in concrete deterioration, are for example coastal Areas or in general, areas with a high air humidity/salinity due to closeness of rivers or lakes.
These exemplary results show, the application of Raman spectroscopy establishes a valuable approach for characterizing the chemical and structural composition of ASR-products. The results prove the potential to trace the kind of reaction products, developing in dependence on the aggregate and to follow up its local alteration from origin of the gel.

The moisture content of screed samples is monitored by means of embedded sensors. Relative humidity sensors and multi-ring-electrodes are used to measure the spatial moisture distribution during desorption. Based on the humidity data and the pore volume distribution, the moisture and the water layer thickness within the pore space are predicted.
Slit shape as well as cylindrical pores are evaluated. Finally, the measured real part of the electrical impedance and the calculated water layer thickness are correlated. Based on the available data, a significant trend change of the impedance is documented at a water layer thickness of approximately 3 nm. This water layer thickness corresponds to a relative humidity of 88.3%.
A simplified formulation is proposed in this paper to assess the proximity of the earthquake-related Perturbation frequencies to the natural sloshing frequencies of the liquid contained in vertical cylindrical tanks. The methodology is based upon an existing gravity-waves approach, which was developed for rectangular cross-section reservoirs, and is extended in this paper to analyze circular cross-section tanks.
The experimental outputs of this paper show that the existing methodology correlates at 100% with experimental data in the case of rectangular containers; while the corresponding average error in the case of a conical container and a cylindrical container is 7% and 9.1 %, respectively. The full diameter of the cross section was considered. The use of sovalidated methodology to full scale tanks, suggests that cylindrical vertical tanks with a capacity lower than 700 m3, could be exposed to a resonance excitation when subjected to
earthquake motions, regardless of the fill level.
Tanks with capacity larger than 700 m3, could be exposed to a resonance excitation when subjected to earthquake motions, regardless of the fill level. Further studies to assess the dynamic forces linked to such resonance and close-to-resonance situations, in a context of a standard overloading situation due to sloshing forces.
