Mass spectrometric Methods MC-ICP-MS and TIMS) are without doubt the working horse of stable isotope analysis. However, drawbacks of these methods include the high costs for instruments and their operation, experienced operators and elaborate chromatographic sample preparation which are time consuming.
Optical spectrometric methods are proposed as faster and low-cost alternative for the analysis of isotope ratios of selected elements by means of high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS) and laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry (LAMIS). First, stable isotope amount compositions of boron (B) and magnesium (Mg) were determined based on the absorption spectra of in-situ generated heteronuclear diatomic molecules (MH or MX) in graphite furnace HR-CS-MAS. The use of a modular simultaneous echelle spectrograph (MOSES) helps to find the maximal isotope shift in the diatomic molecular spectra produced in a graphite furnace by using isotopic spike solutions. Isotopes of boron (10B and 11B) were studied via their hydrides for the electronic transition X 1Σ+ → A 1Π. The spectrum of a given sample is a linear combination of the 10BH molecule and its isotopologue 11BH. Therefore, the isotopic composition of samples can be calculated by a partial least square regression (PLS). For this, a spectral library was built by using samples and spikes with known isotope composition. Boron isotope ratios measured by HR-CS-MAS are identical with those measured by mass spectrometric methods at the 0.15 ‰ level. Similar results were obtained for a multiple isotope system like Mg (24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg), where isotope shifts of their isotopologues can be resolved in the MgF molecule for the electronic transition X 2Σ → A 2 Πi. Finally, the application of molecular spectrometry via emission by LAMIS is compared and discussed.

The use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) is demonstrated for efficient real-time data processing in optical fiber sensing applications. Using ANN-based algorithms, two orders of magnitude improved computation time and improved measurement resolution is achieved for distributed strain sensing using the wavelength-scanning coherent optical time domain reflectometry technique.
The distributed measurement of relative humidity is a sought-after capability for a wide range of applications in civil engineering and structural health monitoring. We show that polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) optical fi-bers can be employed as a sensor medium to conduct distributed humidity measurement by analyzing Rayleigh backscattering traces obtained by OTDR. We make use of the effect that water penetrates the fiber core and directly influences the local fiber attenuation and Rayleigh backscatter coefficient. We conducted distributed backscattering analysis for two different pulse wavelengths: 500 nm and 650 nm. The 650 nm results are susceptible to both, attenuation changes and backscatter changes, whereas backscatter results at 500 nm are not affected by humidity-induced attenuation and only exhibit a change of Rayleigh backscattered power as a function of humidity. The combined measurement and analysis of both parameters at these two wavelengths has the advantage that cross-sensitivities on backscatter change and attenuation, such as strain and tempera-ture changes, could be separated from the humidity response of the fiber. We present laboratory results for a humidity range between 30% and 90% for both pulse wavelengths: including step responses, humidity cycles and hysteresis analysis. In addition to the attenuation and backscatter coefficient dependence, we also analyze optical runtime changes as a function of humidity. POFs have the advantage that they can be directly embed-ded into materials such as concrete or soil to measure water content or localize water ingress. Standard step-index PMMA POFs can be used as a distributed relative humidity sensor up to 200 m distance.
We present our research on the development of a Brillouin optical frequency-domain analysis (BOFDA) using a perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fiber (PFGI-POF) as a sensing fiber. The described works include investigations both on the selection of the setup components with respect to mode coupling effects and on the impact of the humidity cross-sensitivity. The suitability of the developed POF-based BOFDA is proved by a distributed measurement on an 86 m long PFGI-POF recorded with the spatial resolution of 6 m.
Degradation of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in gas‐turbine engines due to calcium–magnesium–aluminosilicate (CMAS) glassy deposits from various sources has been a persistent issue since many years. In this study, state of the art electron microscopy was correlated with X‐ray refraction techniques to elucidate the intrusion of CMAS into the porous structure of atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) TBCs and the formation and growth of cracks under thermal cycling in a burner rig. Results indicate that the sparse nature of the infiltration as well as kinetics in the burner rig are majorly influenced by the wetting behavior of the CMAS. Despite the obvious attack of CMAS on grain boundaries, the interaction of yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with intruded CMAS has no immediate impact on structure and density of internal surfaces. At a later stage the formation of horizontal cracks is observed in a wider zone of the TBC layer.
Chemical companies must find new paths to successfully survive in a changing environment. The potential of digital technologies belongs to these. Flexible and modular chemical plants can produce various high-quality products using multi-purpose equipment with short down-times between campaigns and reduce time to market for new products. Intensified continuous production plants allow for difficult to produce compounds.
Therefore, fully automated “chemical” process control along with real-time quality control are prerequisites to such concepts and thus should be based on “chemical” information. The advances of a fully automated NMR sensor were exploited, using a given pharmaceutical lithiation reaction as an example process within a modular pilot plant. A commercially available benchtop NMR spectrometer was integrated to the full requirements of an automated chemical production environment such as , e.g., explosion safety, field communication, and robust evaluation of sensor data. It was thereof used for direct loop advanced process control and real-time optimization of the process. NMR appeared as preeminent online analytical tool and allowed using a modular data analysis tool, which even served as reliable reference method for further PAT applications.
In future, such fully integrated and intelligently interconnecting “smart” systems and processes can speed up the high-quality production of specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Biocide mitigation strategies of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in the oil and gas industry have been primarily used to eliminate the growths of sulfate-reducing microorganisms (SRM). However, methanogenic Archaea (MA) can also be highly corrosive by using iron as an electron source for methanogenesis. Because of the fundamental physiological differences between archaea and bacteria, responses of MA towards SRM-specific biocides cannot be deduced using SRM. Due to the lack of information available on the effect of biocides on corrosive MA, we selected THPS, glutaraldehyde, nitrate and perchlorate to compare against corrosive SRM.
Preliminary results showed that at low concentrations of THPS (0-10 ppm), growth of MA was not affected, methane production and corrosion rates (0.1 mm/yr) were comparable between the different THPS concentrations. On the contrary, the SRM strain showed decreased corrosion rates (0.18 mm/yr to 0.03 mm/yr) with increasing THPS concentrations. Further corrosion tests including electrochemical measurements of different biocides on the growth of MA and SRM will be conducted. Such knowledge not only provide important insights on the physiological response of MA to biocides but also contribute to more effective mitigation strategies that can be both economic and environmentally beneficial.
Composite pressure vessels for transporting dangerous goods and for hydrogen and natural gas vehicles consist of a load-bearing composite and a gas-tight, metallic or polymeric barrier layer (liner). To investigate the aging behavior of such composite pressure vessels, BAM carried out the interdisciplinary project COD-AGE. The aim of the project was the development of methods and models for the description and determination of the aging behavior of carbon fiber composites using the example of pressure vessels in order to better predict aging and safe working life. One focus of this project was the provision of suitable NDT methods. These included both test-related tests and the possible development of test equipment for later practical use.
In the lecture, test results of the age-related eddy current test on composite pressure vessels are presented.
In aging tests, pressure vessels made of an approximately 4 mm thick aluminum liner and approx. 8 mm thick CFRP layer were examined. Typical application of such pressure vessels are respiratory protective devices of the fire department. The pressure vessels were tested using conventional eddy current technology from the outer and inner side as well as with high-frequency eddy current technology. Both damage to the metallic liner and structures of the CFRP could be detected. A particular mechanical challenge was the inspection of the inside of the liners, since a cylindrical surface with an inside diameter of 150 mm has to be tested with an access of only 15 mm diameter.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common acquired neurological disease affecting Young adults. It leads to myelin destruction and formation of lesions in the brain and permeabilization of the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
Gadolinium based contrast agents (GBCA), used for diagnosis and monitoring by MRI, might accumulate in tissue, including brain. Using an animal model, application of linear and macrocyclic GBCA was investigated. Analysis was performed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma (LA-ICP) MS. This method works as a bioimaging tool for sample thin sections and allows to identify regions of accumulated Gd in the samples.
In healthy and diseased mice, inflammationmediated changes in the brain were investigated by application of GBCA. The mean objective is to understand the changes in inflamed tissue and correlate alterations of the BBB by LA-ICP-MS (Imaging Mass Cytometry).
Mg is a very promising material for lightweight construction and biomedical applications. However, the applicability of Mg and its alloys is hindered by its high corrosion susceptibility. Moreover, due to the toxicity of most inorganic conversion coating systems, the development of novel pre-treatment strategies for technical alloys are of vital importance. Recently, the application of intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been introduced as an alternative approach for corrosion protection of Mg alloys. ICPs with electronic conductivity are known to be able to passivate small defects, however they fail in the presence of large defects due to fast coating reduction and increased cation transport if macroscopically extended percolation networks exist.
The aim of this study is to develop graphene-polymer nanocomposite thin films for corrosion protection of Mg-alloys. As polymer matrix, poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) was selected due to its semiconducting properties and protonic conductivity. In contrast to ICPs with electronic conductivity, the pH-dependant, reversible protonation/de-protonation capability of the P4VP has been utilized to synthesize environment-responsive coatings. The presentation summarizes our recent results on the synthesis and characterization of this novel coating system with a special focus on their interfacial stability and corrosion protection properties.
