Glass
(2019)
Overview about the key activities of division 5.6 glass and the diversity of the material glass. For the vacuum hot extraction method (VHE-MS) some examples are presented e. g. for the measurement of water content or the determination of diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in glasses. Finally, an outlook is shown on the robot controlled glass screening device which will be available next year.
Morphologies of Fresnoite surface crystals of BT0.75S glass under different atmospheric conditions
(2019)
Fresnoite glass-ceramics are characterized by piezoelectric, pyroelectric and non-linear optical properties. These properties can be adjusted by orienting the fresnoite crystals during crystallization. Crystallization begins at the surface. The first surface crystals are not oriented perpendicular and, therfore, produce a surface layer that has not the intended properties. To overcome this issue, the formation of fresnoite surface crystals at different atmospheric conditions was studied.
Ultraschall-Echoverfahren an Betonbauteilen mit geneigten Rückwänden - Entwicklung von Testkörpern
(2019)
Glass powders are promising candidates for manufacturing a broad diversity of sintered materials like sintered ¬glass-ceramics, glass matrix composites or glass bonded ceramics with tailored mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties and complex shape. Its wide and precise adjustability makes this class of materials a key component for advanced technologies. Processing of glass or composite powders often allow even more flexibility in materials design. At the same time, however, processing can have substantial effects on the glass powder surface and sinterability. Thus, mechanical damage and surface contamination can strongly enhance surface crystallization, which may retard or even fully prevent densification. Whereas sintering and concurrent crystallization have been widely studied, partially as cooperative effort of the TC7 of the ICG, and although glass powder sintering is predominantly applied for glasses of low crystallization tendency, sintering is also limited by gas bubble formation or foaming. The latter phenomenon is much less understood and can occur even for slow crystallizing glass powders. The lecture illustrates possible consequences of glass powder processing on glass sintering, crystallization and foaming.
Synchrotron based absorption edge tomography for the analysis of 3D printed polymer embedded MOF
(2019)
Absorption edge tomography, also known as differential tomography at absorption edges, is a method which exploits the sudden change of the attenuation coefficient, when the photon energy crosses the absorption edge of an element. Synchrotron radiation is the best source for absorption edge tomography, because of its small bandwidth, high intensity and easily adjustable photon energy. The synchrotron beamline BAMline at the synchrotron radiation facility BESSY II in Berlin, which is operated by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), provides a monochromatized beam in a photon energy range from 5 keV up to 80 keV with a bandwidth of 2%, when the double multilayer monochromator is used. Together with the microtomography setup, this enables differential tomography with submicron resolution at the K edge of the elements from chromium up to the lanthanides, and up to uranium, when the L edges are used as well.
In this work, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) embedded in polymer are characterized using differential tomography. MOFs are microporous structures of metal ions, coordinated by organic linker molecules, that can be used in a broad field of applications, especially in gas storage and catalysis. In this work, polymer embedded MOFs were extruded into filaments, which were subsequently used for 3d-printing to profit from the specific properties of the MOFs in polymeric materials combined with the arbitrary shapes provided by 3d-printing. For the extrusion, different polymer classes like ABS, polyester- and polyetherurethanes, as well as different MOFs (ZIF-8, ZIF-67, HKUST-1) were used to create MOF containing filaments with a nominal diameter of 3.0 mm. Differential tomography at the edges of the Zn, Co, and Cu was then used to find the distribution of the corresponding MOF in the filament and to analyze the shape of the inclusions.
With rising popularity and availability of additive manufacturing (AM), companies mainly in the aerospace sector, set high requirements on quality control of AM parts, especially produced with selective laser melting (SLM). Since it was shown that those parts are prawn to flaws like pores or cracks, every part needs to be tested. Therefore, NDT Methods, like eddy current testing (ET), could help to characterize SLM parts. Research on ET has shown, that offline ET with high spatial resolution MR (magneto resistive) sensor arrays is possible and that flaws as small as 50 µm could be detected while significantly reducing testing time. A first approach on automated online ET method for testing SLM parts is proposed in this contribution.
