The structural performance of many geotechnical systems (e.g. axially-loaded pile foundations), depends on the shearing resistance at the soil interface, which may govern the load bearing capacity of the foundation. Experimental investigations have shown that this interaction is mainly localised within a narrow shear band next to the structure. Under cyclic loading, a contraction of the soil at the interface may arise (net volume loss), possibly leading to a stress relaxation and thus to a reduction of the load bearing capacity (the so-called friction fatigue). Based on the constitutive similarities between soil continua and interfaces, we propose here the adaption of a Generalized Plasticity model for sandy soils for the numerical analysis of interface problems. In this contribution, the results of an experimental campaign for the parameter calibration of the constitutive model are presented. The tests have been conducted with a ring shear device involving different normal stresses, roughness of the steel plates as well as cyclic loading. The new modelling approach shows promising results and has the additional practical advantage that the interface zone and the soil continuum can both be described with the same constitutive model in general boundary value problems.

As a potential substitute for currently used halogenated flame retardants we explored the synthesis of dibenzo[d,f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepine 6-oxide (BPPO) and derivatives. BPPO is a cyclic phosphonate and was synthesized by a simple, three-component condensation using 2,2´-biphenol, phosphorus trichloride and water by improving a procedure given by Natchev. Subsequently, BPPO was employed in phospha-Michael additions in line with the known synthesis of DOPO-compounds to double bonds. These reactions result in novel phosphorus-containing compounds with flame retardant activíty. The chemical structure of the unsaturated compounds was systematically varied yielding non-reactive flame retardants (without functional groups) from acrylates and diesters, and reactive (with functional groups) flame retardants from p-benzoquinone. The use of the phosphonate BPPO and its derivatives as flame retarding additives has not been described yet. The BPPO ring is highly reactive. Therefore, it is supposed that it mainly acts in the gas phase.
The new phosphonates were applied as additives for improving the flame retardancy of rigid PUR/PIR foams with triethyl phosphate (TEP) as plasticizer. The foam characteristics like density, cell integrity, pore size and mechanical properties were investigated. The burning properties of the foams were analyzed in the vertical flame spread according to DIN 4102 and by cone calorimetry. The relevant parameters depended on the phosphorus content, which is illustrated for PIR foams with ethyl 3-(6-oxidodibenzo[d,f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepin-6-yl)propanoate (X, Z = H; Y = OEt; EA-BPPO) as FR additive.
At comparable P-content, the EA-BPPO additive reached the PHHR-values of the benchmark foam with TEP and triphenyl phosphate as FR additive. With increased P-content the values were further reduced. TML and MARHE parameters showed a similar tendency. The FR additives dispersed well in the formulation and had no significant influence on foam density, cell integrity and pore size compared to the reference sample.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is identified as an excellent technology to reach the target of CO2 reduction. However, the safety issue and cost-effectiveness hinder the future of CCS. For the reliability and safety issues of injection wells, the corrosion resistance of the materials used needs to be determined.
In this study, representative low-cost materials including carbon steel 1.8977 and low alloyed steel 1.7225 were investigated in simulated pore water at 333 K and under CO2 saturation condition to represent the worst-case scenario: CO2 diffusion and aquifer fluid penetration. These simulated pore waters were made from relevant cement powder to mimic the realistic casing-cement interface. Electrochemical studies were carried out using the pore water made of cement powder dissolved in water in comparison with those dissolved in synthetic aquifer fluid, to reveal the effect of cement as well as formation water on the steel performance. Two commercially available types of cement were investigated: Dyckerhoff Variodur® and Wollastonite. Variodur® is a cement containing high performance binder with ultra-fine blast furnace slag which can be used to produce high acid resistance concrete. On the other hand, Wollastonite is an emerging natural material mainly made of CaSiO3 which can be hardened by converting to CaCO3 during CO2 injection.
The results showed the pH-reducing effect of CO2 on the simulated pore water/aquifer (from more than 10 to less than 5) leading to the active corrosion process that happened on both 1.8977 and 1.7225. Electrochemical characterization showed negative free corrosion potential and polarisation curves without passive behaviors. The tested coupons suffered from pitting corrosion, which was confirmed by surface analysis. Interestingly, basing on the pit depth measurements from the tested coupons and the hardness of cement powder, it is suggested that Variodur® performed better than Wollastonite in both aspects. The electrochemical data was compared to that resulted from exposure tests to give a recommendation on material selection for bore-hole construction.
Materials with a high acid resistance are required in different important infrastructures. Examples include repair systems for sewer structures, where biogenic sulfuric acid corrosion is the major degradation mechanism. Low-calcium alkali-activated materials (AAMs) have been repeatedly observed to exhibit high acid resistance. However, the reasons for the high acid resistance of these materials were not fully under¬stood until recently, and the use of highly alkaline activator solutions to produce AAMs appears to hamper their commercial uptake. These issues have been tackled by characterising one-part AAMs and studying their alteration when exposed to sulfuric acid.
One-part AAMs were synthesized by mixing blends of solid silica and sodium aluminate with water, and subsequent curing at 60–80 °C. Acid resistance testing was performed according to DIN 19573, i.e. exposure to sulfuric acid at pH = 1 for 70 days. Characterisation of the cured and the acid-exposed materials was done by XRD, ATR-FTIR, SEM as well as 29Si, 27Al and 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy, including cross-polarisation and double-resonance methods.
Materials synthesized from industrial silicas were gel-zeolite composites, containing a substantial amount of unreacted ‘excess’ silica, while materials synthesized from rice husk ash were fully amorphous, containing ‘excess’ hydrous alumina. The sulfuric acid resistance of mortars based on these binders conformed to the requirements of DIN 19573 for sewer repair applications. The high acid resistance was caused by precipitation of silica gel at the mortar–solution interface, inhibiting further degradation. The presence of alumina gel may inhibit bacterial activity, potentially further improving performance in sewer environments.
The phase assemblage of silica/sodium aluminate-based one-part AAMs can be adjusted via choice of the silica starting material. Properly designed materials exhibit excellent acid resistance, caused by precipi¬tation of silica gel which protects subjacent regions, and they may also inhibit bacterial activity.
Spalling of concrete structures is a serious issue for their safety. A better understanding of the pore water distribution and state during a fire is a prerequisite for numerical approaches to such problems.
Temperature-driven water transport in concrete consists of multiple phenomena, such as convection, diffusion, adsorption and dehydration. Distinguishing the different influences experimentally is difficult because typically they cannot be disentangled.
A common experimental setup approximates a one-dimensional flow, and places temperature and pressure gauges along the propagation direction. For direct information about the water content inside a sample, methods such as NMR or neuron radiography are necessary.
A multiphase model for the flow in porous media is presented, with dehydration and changes in the pore size distribution taken into consideration. NMR measurements for temperature-driven flow have been performed. The numerical and experimental results are compared for water transport at temperatures below the critical point. Since both the finite-element model and the experiment allow the distinction between adsorbed, capillary and bulk water, a more fine-grained view of the pore water state is obtained.
Due to the many possible applications, the uncomplicated production and the high application range, reinforced concrete is a widely used building material. This large range of physical material properties still poses an engineering challenge in determining all necessary requirements for predicting dynamic effects under impact load.
Many aspects of impact have already been examined and some correlations have been studied intensively. Examples are the work of Lastunen and Booker, who studied the influence of projectile properties on the impact form. Li has also investigated the local effects of an impact. The field of detailed damage analysis has not been in focus so far.
This presentation shows some studies in medium-velocity impact with the focus on post-impact damage evaluation. The impactor is modified so that the test plates show low penetration on the top and scabbing on the bottom. With the unique tomography lab test stand at BAM the plate is scanned after the impact and the damage is analyzed. Cracks and scabbing are made visible with a reconstruction. The comparison of simulation and tomography allows to create prognosis models for damage characterization.
The present contribution evaluates four measuring series made by the Federal Institute of Material Research and Testing for the relations between train speed and ground vibration amplitudes. This experimental evaluation is supported by the simulation of the train passages at the different sites by using appropriate excitation mechanisms and forces as well as layered soil models which have been derived from impact measurements at each site.
High performance polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have emerged as novel materials with broad applications from gas separation to electronic devices. Sufficiently rigid, even contorted polymer chains show only limited molecular mobility, therefore undergo inefficient packing and give rise to intrinsic microporosity with pore size generally smaller than 1 nm and BET surface areas larger than 700 m2/g. Further performance optimization and long-term stability of devices incorporating PIMs rely on our understanding of structure-processing-property relationships and physical aging, in which glass transition plays a key role. Up to now no glass transition temperature (Tg) of PIMs could be detected with conventional thermal analysis techniques before degradation. Decoupling the time scales responsible for the glass transition and the thermal decomposition is a reliable strategy to overcome this. This was achieved by employing fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) based on a chip sensor, which is capable to heat and cool a small sample (ng-range) with ultrafast rates of several ten thousand K/s. FSC provides definitive evidence of glass transition of a series of PIMs with a special consideration on the chain rigidity. The determined glass transition temperature of these PIMs follows the order of the rigidity of their backbone structures. FSC provides the first clear-cut experimental evidence of the glass transition of PIM-EA-TB with a Tg of 663 K, PIM-1 of 644 K and PIM-DMDPH-TB of 630 K at a heating rate of 1Χ104 K/s. Local fluctuations are featured in glass transition of highly rigid PIMs. As conformational changes are prevented by the backbone rigidity, the glass transition must rather be assigned to local small scale fluctuations.
Crisis management, particularly the evacuation of handicapped people during a fire scenario presents a highly demanding challenge for nursing staff and rescue forces on site. The German research Project SiME is an interdisciplinary cooperation of university and non-university research institutions as well as medium-sized companies, which work together to develop strategies to manage such critical scenarios. In the SiME project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, evacuation characteristics of pedestrians with physical, mental or age-related disabilities are investigated to fit consisting numerical evacuation models with data. One of the major tasks of the OvGU was to set up a database of scenarios related to fire, explosion or substance releases in the working and living environment of handicapped people. Therefore, more than 463 fire Events occurring over the last decade in Germany were documented in this database and categorized by a suitable assignment of characteristics e.g. location of fire, ignition source, number of fatalities and injured.
In Europe biodiesel gained from rapeseeds are considered as an alternative to common fossil fuels due to its environmental performance and its independence from import of raw materials. Biodiesel is also suitable to serve as blending component to heating oil. In that case, it must be considered that changes of fuel composition might cause material degradation.
The objective of this research was to investigate the resistance of metallic materials exposed to heating oil, heating oil blend B20 with 20 % biodiesel and pure biodiesel. Furthermore, the resistance of metals to eight-year aged B10 and six-year aged pure biodiesel was evaluated. Ageing of biodiesel forms acids and water which might propagate metal corrosion. The investigated metals (aluminium, unalloyed steel, austenitic CrNi-steel, copper, die cast zinc and brass) are commonly used for components in middle distillate facilities.
According to DIN 50905-4 the immersed metals were exposed in a climate chamber at 50°C for 4 weeks. The metallic materials were evaluated as resistant if the annual corrosion rate due to uniform corrosion remained under 0.1 mm/year and no localized corrosion in the form of pitting occurred.
The corrosion rates of the exposed materials stayed far below the limit of 0.1 mm/year for all tested fuels. An exception was die cast zinc ZP0410 in eight-year aged B10; a corrosion rate up to 0.3 mm/year due to uniform corrosion was measured. In no case localized corrosion occurred. Copper and brass caused discolouration of biodiesel from yellow to green.
In conclusion, the tested metallic materials were resistant in heating oil, heating oil blend B20 and pure biodiesel at 50 °C. Even the metals exposed to six-year aged biodiesel and eight-year aged B10 showed no uniform or localized corrosion; except for zinc, which was not resistant in eight-year aged B10.
Two measurement campaigns of train-induced ground vibrations are evaluated for the vehicle-track-soil interaction. Ground vibrations, track vibrations and vehicle vibrations have been measured for train passages and impulse excitation and compared with theoretical results. The soil and the track-soil system are calculated by wavenumber integrals. The influence of the vehicle is introduced by a substructure method. By comparing theory and measurement the different components of excitation force and ground vibration can be analysed, the quasi-static excitation, track-alignment errors, the out-of-roundness of wheels, the wheel and rail roughness, and moreover, scattered axle impulses and ineffective high-frequency parts of the wheelset accelerations and forces.
Mortars for application on concrete, e.g. repair mortars or protective coatings, need to have a durable bond to the substrate. This bond is determined by the adhesion between the two materials and by the differential deformations of the mortar and the substrate. In the present contribution, the hygric deformations (shrinkage/expansion) of novel one-part alkali-activated mortars and their bond to concrete substrates are studied. Shrinkage of the mortars was studied at 50 % r.H., while expansion was studied on mortars stored over an open water surface (> 99% r.H.). The bond behaviour was studied by pull-off tests according to DIN EN 1542 and by optical microscopy.
The alkali-activated mortars exhibit hygric deformations much lower than the deformations of an established, commercial mortar for sewer maintenance that was tested as reference in parallel with the alkali-activated mortars. The bond behaviour of the alkali-activated mortars depends strongly on their mix-design and curing. Optical microscopy showed that in the mortars with lower bond strength, cracks developed in the mortar during curing. Mortars with appropriate mix-design and curing did not exhibit cracking, and their pull-off strength (up to > 3 MPa) conformed to the requirements of relevant standards.

Subspace-based damage detection handling temperature effects and uncertainty in the reference
(2019)
Temperature variation can be a nuisance that perturbs vibration based structural health monitoring (SHM)approaches for civil engineering structures. In this paper, temperature affected vibration data is evaluated within a stochastic damage detection framework, which relies on a null space based residual. Besides two existing temperature rejection approaches – building a reference state from an averaging method or a piecewise method – a new approach is proposed, using model interpolation. In this approach, a general reference model is obtained from data in the reference state at several known reference temperatures. Then, for a particular tested temperature, a local reference model is derived from the general reference model. Thus, a well fitting reference null space for the formulation of a residual is available when new data is tested for damage detection at an arbitrary temperature. Particular attention is paid to the computation of the residual covariance, taking into account the uncertainty related to the null space matrix estimate. This improves the test performance, contrary to prior methods, for local and global damages, resulting in a higher probability of detection (PoD) for the new interpolation approach compared to previous approaches.

Nanomaterials are a relatively new class of materials for which a regulatory framework still has to be established and regulators require comprehensive datasets of well characterized nanomaterials for the implementation. Especially information about the surface chemistry of nanoparticles is crucial, since it largely determines their biological and environmental fate. How the surface chemistry changes under relevant ageing conditions is of particular interest, because exposure will normally occur not to the pristine material but to a nanoform that underwent some kind of transformation.
In this talk, first a short overview about the contributions of division 6.1 to multiple European-funded projects will be presented, in which surface analytical techniques are used to improve the physical-chemical characterization of nanomaterials. Secondly, a study investigating the surface-chemical transformations of a representative set of titanium dioxide nanoparticles is discussed in more detail. The ageing has partly been performed at the BAM division 7.5, and the surface chemistry was analyzed using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). By analyzing the complex mass spectra with principal component analysis (PCA), it was possible to identify even subtle changes that occur upon ageing.
Susceptibility of 304 stainless steel to crevice corrosion in electrochemically active fluids
(2019)
The susceptibility of AISI 304 stainless steel to crevice corrosion on the effect of contact with electrochemically active fluids was investigated using exposure and stepwise potentiostatic polarisation. Crevice materials made up of 304 SS and Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) forming two kinds of crevices including 304 SS-to-PEEK and 304 SS-to-304 SS were tested.

Crevice materials made up of 304 SS and Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) forming two kinds of crevices including 304 SS-to-PEEK and 304 SS-to-304 SS were tested.
According to the results of the experiments carried out, the following points can be concluded:
1. Exposure tests showed that specimens with the addition of SiO2 particles and polyaniline particles exhibit better corrosion resistance than specimens with the addition of only polyaniline particles or binder only.
2. Open circuit potential measurements showed that in the beginning of the experiments, both coatings had an open circuit potential 100 mV higher than carbon steel. Within one day of immersion, the potential of carbon steel increased significantly, indicating the formation of oxide layer. After extended exposure the carbon steel potential sat between PS1 (which had higher potential) and PS2 (which had a lower potential) and all three were in the range –600 mV to –500 mV vs Ag/AgCl.
3. Both coatings PS-1 and PS-2 were degraded with increasing exposure time, shown by the decrease of absolute impedance value at low frequency range after 2, 4, and 6 days exposure.
4. Potentiodynamic test was performed after 3 hours and 6 days exposure, and it was shown that the coating in the initial stage exhibited more passive behavior than the specimens exposed for 6 days.
Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have recently emerged as novel materials for a broad range of high-performance applications from gas separation to electronic devices. The very rigid, contorted polymer chains show only limited molecular mobility and therefore pack inefficiently giving rise to intrinsic microporosity with pore sizes generally smaller than 1 nm resulting in BET surface areas larger than 700 m2/g. Using conventional thermal analysis techniques, no glass transition temperature (Tg) of PIMs could be unambiguously detected up to now. Employing fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) based on a one chip sensor, decoupling the time scales responsible for the glass transition and the thermal decomposition is a reliable strategy to overcome this limitation. The FSC device is capable to heat and cool a small sample (ng-range) with ultrafast rates of several ten thousand K/s. Evidence of a glass transition is obtained for a series of PIMs with different chain rigidities. Local small-scale fluctuations are held responsible for the glass transition of highly rigid PIMs rather than segmental motions as in conventional polymers.
Emergency exits as bottlenecks in escape routes are important for designing traffic facilities. Especially the fundamental diagram is a crucial performance criterion for assessment of pedestrians' safety in facilities and an important basis for calculation methods. For this reason, several studies were performed during the last decades which focus on the quantification of movement through bottlenecks. These studies were usually conducted with populations of homogeneous characteristics to reduce influencing variables and for reasons of practicability.
Studies which consider heterogeneous characteristics in performance parameters are rarely available. In response and to reduce this lack of data a series of well-controlled large-scale movement studies considering pedestrians with different disabilities was carried out.
The corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete structures is one of the main threats to their durability. Based on the scientific achievements of the past decades the knowledge about the deterioration mechanisms and possible repair strategies for corrosion induced damages have found their way into practice.
It is common sense, that a detailed assessment of the structure is the foundation for a successful repair measure. In addition to the “traditional” singular on-site-procedures such as measurement of concrete cover, carbonation depth, half-cell potentials and chloride contents the monitoring of corrosion related parameters has gained in importance over the past few years.
The advantages of a corrosion monitoring are obvious. In new buildings, structural elements which cannot be assessed after completion (e.g. tunnel segments), or members with electrically isolating coatings can be monitored by means of integrated sensors providing an insight into the development of crucial parameters such as electrochemical potentials, corrosion currents and the electrical resistivity of the concrete. A less known but very beneficial field of application is the use of corrosion monitoring as an integral part of a repair measure based on principles such as the cathodic protection of steel in concrete (CP) or increasing the electrical resistivity of the concrete (IR). By implementing a corrosion monitoring system, it is possible to survey the time dependent effect of the repair measure on the corrosion process which may lead to a confirmation of successful repair measure or to a modification of the repair strategy.
As the principle of cathodic protection for steel in concrete is a recognized repair measure today, the number of applications increases steadily and thus increasing the relevance for corrosion monitoring. Nevertheless, no standards or guidelines concerning the corrosion monitoring are available in Germany today, making it difficult to implement corrosion monitoring in common practice.
With this in mind an international task group formed to develop the specification B12 “Corrosion Monitoring of Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures” published by the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing, DGZfP, spring 2018.
This paper will present the new specification B12 by highlighting the basic measurement principles and illustrating the potentials of corrosion monitoring for new and existing concrete structures by means of case studies.
Explosive spalling is caused by, among others, the thermohydraulic spalling mechanism. During this process, vaporization, dehydration, moisture-transport and condensation processes interact. As a result, a drying and dehydration zone as well as a saturated zone, known as a moisture clog, are observed inside the unilaterally-heated concrete. The presented research is focused on the experimental investigation of the underlying thermohydraulic processes.
To investigate these, a test methodology based on X-ray computed tomography (CT) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was developed. Thereby, the X-ray CT scans are carried out simultaneously during the application of a defined unilateral-heating regime on a specially-constructed specimen. This miniaturized specimen, equipped with a double-layer casing, reproduces the condition within a planar, unilaterally-heated building component.
A preliminary test methodology and the first experimental results were presented at the 5th International Workshop on Concrete Spalling in Borås, Sweden (2017). The contribution for the upcoming workshop presents an improved version of this test methodology and new results for a high-performance concrete (HPC) mixture exposed to temperatures up to 500 °C. Regarding the CT measurements, a higher time-resolution of 15 min was achieved and a quantification of the moisture changes was implemented. Due to an increase in signal quality of the NMR measurements, a pore-size specific moisture distribution can now be resolved. This allows to conclude about the moisture reconfiguration between small gel pores and larger interhydrate pores. Additionally, the NMR measurement are no longer limited to first 2.5 cm below the heated surface but a one-dimensional moisture distribution can now be estimated over the whole 10 cm long specimen.
The presented results demonstrate that the combination of X-ray CT and NMR measurements enables to image and quantify the thermally-induced moisture transport and reconfiguration from small gel pores up to macro pores. This provides important insights into the thermohydraulic damage mechanism and leads to a better understanding of spalling avoidance strategies, like the addition of polypropylene fibres.
An lokalen Fehlstellen (z.B.
Although the main flame retardant modes of action are known, in practise the detailed scientific understanding usually falls short, when it comes to modern multicomponent systems, the important tiny optimizations, or quantifying in terms of specific fire properties. The description of the flame retardant modes of action remains usually vague and fragmentary. This talk tries to deliver thought-provoking impulses how the understanding of the fire behaviour and flame retardancy can be utilized to direct the development of future flame retardant polymer products. Some overseen details are picked up as well as rethinking of concepts memorised long ago is encouraged to discover something new. Furthermore, the talk tries to fill the gap between flame retardant modes of action and fire performance constituting a product. This talk promotes the evidence-based development of flame retardant polymers

Three measurement campaigns of train-induced ground vibrations are evaluated for the vehicle-track-soil interaction.
The identification of the dynamic behavior of structures, like bridges and towers, is relevant to address multiple issues. In many cases the dynamic parameters should be acquired only once or at a frequency that doesn’t justify the installation of distinct vibration sensors for a long-term monitoring. To identify modal frequencies of a structure, a drone based mobile sensing platform has been implemented. This sensing platform measures the relative displacement be-tween the structure and the drone, which also shows a strong dynamic behavior under wind tur-bulences. By regarding the dynamic model of the drone and additional measurements at the dis-tance sensor the absolute movement of the structure can be estimated based on the measured relative distance. This time domain data is a suitable input for various operational modal analysis algorithms. The system has been used to identify the dynamic properties of test and real structure, like a 1.5 MW wind turbine tower.
Polymers with intrinsic microporosity are promising candidates for the active separation layer in gas separation membranes. Here, by means of inelastic neutron scattering, the vibrational density of states (VDOS) and the molecular mobility were investigated for PIM-1, the prototypical polymer with intrinsic microporosity. The results are compared to data measured for a more conventional high-performance polyimide used in gas separation membranes (Matrimid).
The measured data show the characteristic low frequency excess contribution to the VDOS above the Debye sound wave level, generally known as the Boson peak in glass-forming materials. In comparison to the Boson peak of Matrimid, that of PIM-1 is shifted to lower frequencies. This shift is discussed considering the microporous, sponge-like structure of PIM-1 as providing a higher compressibility at the molecular scale than for conventional polymers.
Elastic fixed window scans were measured on a neutron backscattering spectrometer to have an overview about the molecular dynamics at a time scale of ca. 1 ns. The temperature dependence of the estimated mean squared displacement shows a step-like increase in the temperature range from 100 K to 250 K indicating the onset of some molecular mobility. The nature of this motional process was analyzed in detail by quasielastic neutron scattering combining Time-of-Flight and backscattering where the data are discussed with regard to both the q- and the temperature dependence.
Elastic waves in inhomogeneous meshes avoiding numerical artifacts
Elastic waves in solids resulting from damage processes, e.g. microcracking are used to monitor the integrity of structures. The numerical modelling of these acoustic Emission processes is hindered by the different scales involved. Crack opening is a fast process and the size of the damaged zone is small, leading to small time steps and fine meshes in a numerical finite element simulation. On the other hand the relevant wave Propagation takes place on a much larger spatial scale, e.g covering the distance between Emission source and sensor.
To avoid numerical oscillations, the mesh size at the emission source has to be coupled to its time scale. Using higher order spectral elements can be beneficial with respect to the needed number of degrees of freedom. To make the computation of an acoustic emission process feasible one is lead to coarsening the mesh for larger distances to the source. Solution components with a higher frequency will be reflected at mesh density steps. The mesh coarsening has to be done in a way to avoid or minimize this kind of reflections.
To get more insight into the propagation characteristics of the numerical solution, dispersion curves are calculated for different element types assuming a structured mesh with constant element size. Coupling two meshes with different mesh densities will then lead to frequency dependent reflections at the boundary similar to the coupling of different materials.
The starting mesh density is dictated by the acoustic emission source time scale. The largest allowable mesh size needs to resolve the components of propagating signal with the highest frequency, smallest wavelength which is given by the bandwidth of the sensor.
Still coarser meshes may be used when high frequency components are propagated by a different method.
Nowadays, various polymeric materials are used in E&E applications with sufficient flame retardance by adding rather different flame retardants. It doesn’t matter whether cables are used outdoor or are installed indoor as building products, the weathering exposures such as UV radiation, humidity and variation in temperature occur and influence the flame-retardant property. Recently, the lifetime of the flame retardance itself becomes an increasingly important factor. In this work, several devices were used to perform accelerated artificial ageing simulating different environment exposures.
The comprehensive and global understanding of the durability of flame retardance in dependence on the weathering or ageing conditions is still a matter of discussion. Therefore, the weathering resistance of various halogen-free fire-retarded polymers was investigated in this work. Polymeric systems with different kinds of fire retardants were chosen, including various fire retardant mechanisms. Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) blends with high amounts of inorganic flame retardant such as aluminum hydroxide (ATH), boehmite and synergists, which mainly dilutes the polymer resin work as heat sink and cooling agent, and enhance residue formation was examined. Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) was modified with melamine cyanurate (MC), which mainly acts by changed melt flow and dripping behavior as well as fuel dilution. Additionally, aluminum diethylphosphinate and boehmite are induced as assistant flame retardant. Furthermore, glass fiber reinforced Polyamide 66 (PA) was investigated containing different kinds of aluminum diethylphosphinate based flame retardant mixtures, which acts by flame inhibition and additional char formation.
The degradation of the surface was analyzed after the different weathering conditions. Most of the specimens exhibited an intensive material degradation at the top surface accompanied by a distinct discoloration, e.g. getting darker or showing yellowing. The weathering of the EVA samples lead to numerous cracks (already) after 4000 h. The corresponding changes in the chemical structure was investigated by ATR FT-IR for all materials.
The flammability was investigated by cone calorimeter, UL-94 burning chamber, and oxygen index (LOI) using plate and bar specimens. The flame retardance of most of the materials studied degrades only slightly or were rather stable for the investigated exposure times. Interestingly, also some opposite results were found. EVA modified by different inorganic flame retardants such as ATH achieved higher LOI after exposing in the humidity chamber and the accelerated oxidation under water in the autoclaves. It is suggested that the particle size of ATH and boehmite plays an important role, when these flame retardants agglomerate at the surface during accelerated weathering.
Both materials, EVA and TPU, were also investigated as cable jackets. While EVA modified with inorganic flame retardants exhibits low-smoke and non-dripping fire behavior, TPU flame-retarded with MC yields cables with pronounced melt-dripping. Cone calorimeter tests were carried out using cable rafts of the size of 100 mm * 100 mm as well as our self-made cable module test, which simulates the vertical full-scale test of a bundle of cables at the bench-scale. Both methods were used to investigate the weathering resistance of the flame retardance in cables. The results of the cable module test for the flame-retarded EVA cables were only slightly affected even when a long time hydrothermal ageing was carried out. This is because of inorganic residue which just delays the fire growth but does not extinguish. However, for the flame-retarded TPU cable jackets, the cable module test exhibited an accelerated fire spread and a melt-dripping behavior which was promoted by weathering exposure.
Whereas the degradation of flame retardant polymers has been discussed since decades, only more recently, the lifetime of the flame retardancy itself becomes an important factor, e.g. for cables used as building products. In this work, several kinds of accelerated artificial ageing tests are performed simulating different environmental exposures and thus highlighting different degradation mechanisms: artificial accelerated weathering, climatic chamber, water immersion, salt spray chamber, and autoclave test. The durability is expected to be different for different flame-retardant materials. Thus, various sets of halogen-free fire-retarded polymers were investigated: ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) with aluminum hydroxide (ATH), boehmite and synergists, ester-based and ether-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with melamine cyanurate (MC), aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi), and boehmite, and glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66 (PA66) with AlPi-based mixtures.
Intensive degradation of the surface was observed, e.g. yielding discoloration and yellowing, EVA showed cracking when weathered. Changes in chemical structure was investigated by ATR-FTIR. The flammability was investigated with the cone calorimeter, UL-94 classification, and oxygen index (LOI). The flame retardancy of most of the materials studied degraded only slightly for the investigated exposure times. EVA/ATH achieved an improved LOI due to flame retardants agglomeration at the surface. Sets of materials, based on EVA and TPU, were also investigated as cable jackets. While flame retarded EVA exhibited no dripping during burning, TPU flame-retarded with MC cables showed pronounced melt-dripping. Cone calorimeter tests were carried out using cable rafts as well as our self-made cable module test, simulating a vertical bundle of cables at the bench scale. The comparison of different fire tests, different exposure conditions, and different materials carved out the specific degradation phenomena with respect to each of these parameters.
Most of this work was supported by the IGF Project (18926 N) of the Fördergemeinschaft für das Süddeutsche Kunststoff-Zentrum e.V., supported by the AiF within the framework of the program “Förderung der Industriellen Gemeinschaftsforschung (IGF)” of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy based on a decision of the Deutschen Bundestag.
Bare steel constructions are often integrated in modern buildings. Intumescent coatings are widely used to protect the steel from heating up too quickly in a case of fire. As the functionality of intumescent coatings decreases with the impact of weathering processes, it is important to understand the mechanisms of material degradation to maintain long durability. The weathering-induced degradation behavior of a water-borne intumescent coating was examined, and the weakest points of the formulation were identified by a systematic approach. Resulting from this investigation, adjustments to the formula were made, leading to improved weathering resistance.
This talk provides a brief introduction on general engineering challenges for the offshore (marine) wind energy production, focusing on material, structural and hydromechanical aspects.
The talk begins with a broad overview on general trends for offshore wind-farms, with insights on some characteristic structural features and their associated loads. Then, some particular open issues for the foundation of the offshore wind turbines into the seabed are introduced. Here, different research approaches are discussed, from experimental investigations to coupled computational analysis at micro- and macroscopic scales.
In the second part of the seminar, both the hydromechanical Wave–Tower interaction and some general aspects of the windfarm aerodynamics (wake analysis) are discussed. Some modelling possibilities in the frame of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) are introduced and the relevance of such analyses for a proper windfarm layout optimization is pointed out.
Summing up, this seminar aims to show that: i) Numerical analysis of the turbine’s interaction with wind/waves and with the seabed is both useful and affordable. ii) Simplified models can provide an insight into windfarm aerodynamics. iii) Turbulent wake analysis is very relevant for the windfarm layout.
