The salinization and contamination of metal surfaces by chloride-containing aerosols is of great importance with regard to corrosion phenomena of damaged coated metal surfaces and stainless steels in the maritime sector and in offshore applications. Detailed questions have to be answered to clarify whether and to what extent salinization of the surface has an influence on the adhesion and durability of coatings in repairing applications and on pitting occurrence on stainless steels under atmospheric conditions. The questions arise which degree of salinization is reached after which period of time and how a defined and reproducible salinization can be simulated in the laboratory for further systematic investigations. The article is dedicated to these questions. Results of a field trial on the Island of Heligoland are presented and a simple procedure for a defined loading of metal surfaces with chlorides at a laboratory scale using a design of experiments (DoE) approach is introduced.
Corrosion of steel rebars in concrete presents one of the main deterioration mechanisms limiting service life of the reinforced structures. The corrosion is accompanied by an expansion of the corrosion products causing high pressures, concrete cracking and finally spalling of a cover layer. Critical chloride concentration, loss of alkalinity and modeling of the steel corrosion are in researchers' spotlight for decades, however reinforcement corrosion in alkali activated materials is insufficiently described and understood yet.
In this work, the steel reinforcement corrosion in alkali-activated fly ash mortars is investigated in terms of electrochemical behaviour of the reinforced mortars exposed to aggressive environments such as leaching, carbonation and chloride ingress. A selected geopolymer mixture based on hard coal fly ash activated with sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solutions is used for the steel reinforcement-corrosion experiments. The formation of passive layer on the steel rebars is observed after approx. two weeks of hardening at laboratory temperature. However, alternative heat-treatment at 80°C for several hours leads to immediate formation of the passive layer as well as to a faster strength gain (80 MPa after 24h at 80°C). Chloride-induced corrosion, leaching and carbonation resistance of the alkali activated fly ash-based concrete is studied, where leaching in deionized water or carbonation under natural conditions (~0.04 % CO2) for 300 days did not lead to corrosion of the embedded steel. On the other hand, accelerated carbonation under 100 % CO2 atmosphere lead to depassivation within two weeks.
Impact of acid condensation on wetting and corrosion behavior of CO2 transport-pipeline steel
(2018)

The research focus of this study was set on the corrosion process of condensate as droplets on the surface of carbon steels (X52, X70) martensitic steel UNS S41500, and super austenite UNS N08031 in CO2 atmosphere with impurities at 278 K (to simulate the offshore transportation condition in a buried pipeline). The possibility of dew/droplet formation on the steel surface and wetting behavior of corresponding materials were evaluated by contact angle measurement in dense CO2 at 278 K. To observe the effect of impurities (SO2 and O2) on droplet corrosion process, exposure tests were carried out in the mixed atmosphere with a drop, 1 ‑ 10 µL in volume, of CO2 saturated ultra-pure water on steel surface. Comparable exposure tests were carried out with the same gas mixture and the same volume of water, as vapor, to observe the droplet formation and the corrosion process that follows. Effects of surface roughness on the droplet formation and its corrosion process were further studied and showed no significant role upon long time exposure. The results from droplet experiments were compared to those from the bulk electrolyte for the further recommendation on the quality control of gas stream along with the use of carbon steels as transport pipelines in CCS - Carbon Capture and Storage system.

Electrochemical deposition of polyaniline on carbon steel for corrosion study in geothermal solution
(2018)
Polyaniline has been widely developed for many applications, e.g., sensor, supercapacitor component, electrochromic devices, and anticorrosion pigments [1]. Although the addition of polyaniline pigment in organic coatings has been an alternative for corrosion protection in industrial application, the protection mechanism is still not fully understood [2]. Herein in this study, as a part of the development of polyaniline/silicon dioxide coating for geothermal application, polyaniline has been deposited electrochemically on carbon steel surface and tested in geothermal solution to study the contribution of polyaniline in the corrosion protection of a polyaniline-based composite in the geothermal system. The electrochemical deposition was carried out by immersing carbon steel in 0.1 M oxalic acid and 0.05 M aniline, with the polarization potential of -0.6 – 1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl, and a scan rate of 10 mV/s. To observe the surface/interface reaction between the electrolyte and electrode surface during the electrochemical polymerization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement was applied after each cycle. For corrosion study in the geothermal application, this experiment used an artificial geothermal solution with the composition of 1,500 mg/l Cl-, 20 mg/l SO42-, 15 mg/l HCO3-, 200 mg/l Ca2+, 250 mg/l K+, and 600 mg/l Na+, and pH 4 to simulate a geothermal brine found in Sibayak, Indonesia. Electrochemical measurements were performed by monitoring the open circuit potential over seven days, with the interruption of EIS every 22 hours. The experiments were performed at room temperature and 150 °C (1 MPa) in a free oxygen environment. Polyaniline coated carbon steel is more durable in a room temperature environment compared to 150 °C, which could be caused by the iron oxalate dissolution at elevated temperature. This degradation was further proven by the impedance spectra, which showed a reduction of approximately ten times for specimens measured at 150 °C as compared to the specimens measured at room temperature.

Alkali-activated fly ash mortars were studied with regard to durability-relevant transport coefficients and the electrochemical behaviour of embedded carbon steel bars on exposure of the mortars to leaching, carbonation and chloride penetration environments. The transport coefficients differed considerably between different formulations, being lowest for a mortar with BFS addition, but still acceptable for one of the purely fly ash-based mortars. Leaching over a period of ~300 days in de-ionized water did not lead to observable corrosion of the embedded steel, as shown by the electrochemical data and visual inspection of the steel. Exposure to 100 % CO2 atmosphere caused steel depassivation within approx. two weeks; in addition, indications of a deterioration of the mortar were observed. The results are discussed in the context of the different reaction products expected in high- and low-Ca alkali-activated binders, and the alterations caused by leaching and carbonation.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is identified as an excellent technology to reach the target of CO2 reduction. However, the safety issue and cost effectiveness hinder the future of CCS. For the reliability and safety issues of injection wells the corrosion resistance of the materials used needs to be determined.
In this study, representative low cost materials including carbon steel 1.8977 and low alloyed steel 1.7225 were embedded in cement to mimic the realistic casing-cement interface. Electrochemical studies were carried out using these metal-cement specimens in comparison with those made of metal only in CO2 saturated synthetic aquifer fluid, at 333 K, to reveal the effect of cement on the steel performance. The results showed the protective effect of cement on the performance of pipeline metals during polarisation process. However, the corrosion current density was high in all cases, with and without cement, indicating that the corrosion resistance of these materials is low. This conclusion was supported by the surface analysis of the polarized specimens, which revealed both homogenous and pitting corrosions.

Electrochemical potential mapping according to guideline B3 of DGZfP (German Society for Nondestructive Testing) is a recognized technique for the localization of corroding reinforcing steels. In reinforced concrete structures the measured potentials are not necessarily directly linked to the corrosion likelihood of the reinforcing steel. The measured values may be significantly affected, different from, e.g., stress measurement, by different influences on the potential formation at the phase boundary metal/concrete itself as well as the acquisition procedure. Due to the complexity of influencing factors there is a risk that the results are misinterpreted. Therefore, in a training concept firstly the theoretical basics of the test method should be imparted. Then, frequently occurring practical situations of various influencing factors will be made accessible to the participants by a model object specially designed for this purpose. The aim is to impart profound knowledge concerning the characteristics of potential mapping for detecting corrosion of reinforcing steel in order to apply this technique in practice as reliable and economical test method.
CCS technology - Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage, has been recognized as an excellent technology to reach the target of CO2 reduction. However, the safety issue and cost effectiveness currently hinder the future of CCS. Recent studies have shown that even at a very low concentration of impurities (less than 100 ppmV of SO2, NO2, O2 and H2O) the droplet formation and condensation of sulfuric and nitric acids in dense phase CO2 are possible and observable [1-3].To reveal the mechanism of droplet corrosion in dense CO2 at high pressure and low temperature, further studies on factors that affect wettability and resulting corrosion behaviors of transport pipeline steels are needed.
In this work, carbon steel 1.8977 (L485MB), CrMo-alloyed steel 1.7225 (42CrMo4), martensitic steel 1.4313, and superaustenite steel 1.4562 (alloy 31) were investigated. The wettability was determined by contact angle measurement of sessile drop in CO2 atmosphere, at different pressure and temperature. The corrosion behavior of steels was investigated with standard exposure tests, followed by mass loss determination, surface characterization by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and chemical analysis by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). Exposure tests with and without the synthetic CO2 saturated water droplets were performed at both low temperature (278 K) and higher temperatures (288 K and 313 K) at high pressure where CO2 is supercritical or in dense phase. The investigated flue gases were SO2 (70-220 ppmV) and O2 (6700 ppmV) and water (50-200 ppmV). To reveal the effects of surface morphology, carbon steel coupons with different surface roughness were prepared to expose to CO2 stream containing oxidizing/reducing impurities to observe the condensation and the corrosion process that followed.
The elemental dissolution of Cu-Zn alloys was investigated as a function of Zn content ranging from 0 to 45 wt%. Atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry (AESEC) was utilized to directly monitor Cu2+ and Zn2+ release, oxide growth, and the enrichment of Cu metal as function of time during potentiodynamic experiments. It was determined that Cu dissolution undergoes a simultaneous mechanism of Cu2O formation and Cu2+ release. The addition of Zn in Cu-Zn alloy does not measurably change the dissolution mechanism of Cu2+ and the rate of aqueous Cu2+ was only dependent on the potential. Zn dissolution was however blocked by the formation of a Cu(0) film which shifted the Zn dissolution in the anodic direction.
Electrochemical tests, hardness measurements, and microstructure analysis are performed to study the influence of austenitizing, quenching, and tempering parameters on the corrosion resistance of the martensitic stainless steel grade X50CrMoV15 (1.4116). Different heat treatment states were studied using an adapted EPR-Test to evaluate the chromium distribution and depletion caused by the formation and dissolution of chromium rich carbides. The EPR results were correlated with pitting corrosion behavior, demonstrating the strong effect of heat treatment parameters on the susceptibility of martensitic stainless steels to corrosion phenomena.
The duplex stainless steel 1.4062 (X2CrNiN22-2) is used as alternative material to austenitic stainless steels in the construction industry. The corrosion resistance of welded seams is influenced by the base material, the weld filler material, the welding process and also by the final surface treatment. The scale layer next to the weld seam can be removed by grinding, pickling, electro-polishing or blasting depending on the requested corrosion resistance. Blasted surfaces are often used in the industrial practice due to the faster and cheaper manufacturing process compared to pickled or electro-polished surfaces. Furthermore blasting with corundum-grain is more effective than blasting with glass-beads which also lower the process costs. In recent years, stainless steel surfaces showed an unusually high susceptibility to pitting corrosion after grinding with corundum. For this reason, it is now also questioned critically whether the corrosion resistance is influenced by the applied blasting agent. This question was specifically investigated by comparing grinded, pickled, corundum-grain- and glass-bead-blasted welding seams. Results of the SEM analyses of the blasting agents and the blasted surfaces will be presented and correlated with the results of different corrosion tests (KorroPad-testing and pitting potentials).
Nickel-free, nitrogen alloyed austenitic stainless-steels, with about 19 wt.-% Mn and 0,8 wt. % N, are an interesting alternative to classic CrNi austenitic stainless steels due to their superior mechanical properties (Rm > 900 MPa, A5 > 50 %, Av > 350 J) in the solution annealed condition. The formation of chromium-rich nitrides during suboptimal heat treatment, processing or application leads to an inhomogeneous distribution of alloying elements in the microstructure, which reduces the corrosion resistance. Consequently, an accurate knowledge of the sensitization behavior is indispensable for the use of nickel-free, high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels. The relationship between artificial aging, phase formation and corrosion resistance was investigated on the alloys X8CrMnN18-19 (1.3815) and X8CrMnMoN18-19-2 (1.4456), both alloyed with 0,8 wt.-% Nitrogen, in the present work. The microstructural evolution was studied by LM and SEM while the corrosion resistance was characterized with the electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) and the KorroPad indicator-test. Both alloys showed increased corrosion susceptibility within critical aging parameters. Finally, a sensitization diagram was described successfully for both alloys showing the positive effect of molybdenum.
The copper alloyed stainless steel 1.4542 (X5CrNiCuNb16-4) is used in different areas due to its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Strength and corrosion resistance can be adjusted by the heat treatment, which is of importance for the application of this alloy. The mechanical properties (strength and hardness) are attributed to the dispersive precipitation of the copper rich ε–Phase. The additional precipitation of chromium carbides can reduce the corrosion resistance. Different ageing states were produced to investigate the precipitation behaviour with various methods. Furthermore, the influence of cold-rolling on the precipitation behaviour was studied in comparison to a solution annealed state without deformation. The microstructure was studied by SEM and the variations of hardness and magnetic proportion were characterised. The electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) was used to determine the corrosion resistance and detect chromium depletion in all heat-treated states. The results show that a work hardening accelerates the precipitation rate, while ageing at 600 °C reduces the corrosion resistance due to chromium depletion.
