Starches and its derivatives are known to exhibit viscosity modifying characteristics. In an ongoing work, the influence of com and cassava starches on some properties of concrete such as compressive strength, heat of hydration and creep are examined. Various percentages (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2 %) of starches by weight of cement were added to concrete mixes prepared in the laboratory. Preliminary results of compressive strengths showed that both starches have some positive impact (e.g. there was 5.3 % increase in strength due to a 1 % addition of com starch by weight of cement in comparison to the control while cassava starch of the same percentage gave 4.9 % increase in strength) at certain percentages of starch addition to concrete at 28 days. The creep and hydration results shows the starch additions compares well and in some instance performs better.

High power laser beam welding of austenitic stainless steel with electromagnetic weld pool support

Numerical simulation of electromagnetic melt control systems in high power laser beam welding
(2013)
The availability of laser sources with a power of
20 kW upwards prepared the ground for laser beam
welding of up to 20 mm thick metal parts. Challenges
are the prevention of gravity-driven melt drop-out and
the control of the dynamics mainly due to the
Marangoni flow.
Coupled numerical turbulent fluid flow, thermal and
electromagnetic simulations and experimental
validation with aluminum AlMg3 and stainless steel
AISI 304 were done for alternating and steady
magnetic fields perpendicular to the process direction.
The first can prevent melt sagging in full-penetration
welding by Lorentz forces in the melt induced by an
AC magnet located below the weld specimen
counteracting gravitational forces. The latter controls
the Marangoni flow by Lorentz braking forces in the
melt by the so-called Hartmann effect.
The simulations show that the drop-out of aluminum
and stainless steel can be avoided for 20 mm thick fullpenetration
welds with moderate magnetic flux
densities of 70 mT and 95 mT at oscillation
frequencies of 450 Hz and 3 kHz, respectively. The
experiments are in good agreement but show
somewhat larger values for steel, whose weakly
ferromagnetic properties are a possible reason. The
investigations with steady magnetic fields reveal the
possibility to mitigate the dynamics significantly
beginning with around 500 mT at laser penetration
depths of approximately 20 mm.
Polymeric vesicles (Pluronic® L-121) loaded with magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and an anti-cancer drug (camptothecin) were prepared continuously in a micro mixing device. Characterization by TEM confirmed the successful incorporation of the MNP and DLS measurements showed a relatively narrow size distribution of the hybrid polymersomes. A very high drug loading of camptothecin (100 µg/ml in the polymersome formulation) was reached and a drug release study of loaded magnetic polymersomes has shown a sustained camptothecin release over several days. Carboxylation of Pluronic® L-121 was performed and enabled a further surface functionalization with bombesin, a 14 amino acid peptide, which binds specifically to the GRPR (gastrin releasing peptide receptor). This receptor is often overexpressed in tumor cells (e.g., human prostate cancer cells) and therefore a suitable target for cancer treatment. An additional fluorescence label with Alexa Fluor® 647 allow tracking of the polymersomes e.g., in cell experiments. Relaxivity measurements to evaluate the potential of magnetic polymersomes as MR contrast agent for in vivo imaging are in progress.
In Germany dual purpose casks for spent nuclear fuel (SF) or high level radioactive waste (HLW) are used for safe transportation and interim storage. Key safety issues in both fields are the safe enclosure of the radioactive material, the safe removal of decay heat, securing nuclear criticality safety, limitation of radiation exposure to acceptable levels and keeping it as low as reasonable achievable (ALARA principle).
Whereas these safety requirements during transportation are ensured by the Type-B(U)-design testing and approval procedure on basis of internationally agreed IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) requirements storage licenses are issued on national and site specific safety analyses.
This paper presents experiences from recent interim storage safety evaluation and licensing procedures in Germany on basis of a Type-B(U) certified cask designs concerning specific differences from Operation and accident conditions inside the storage facility. The focus is laid on the interaction of cask and building structures with regard to shielding, heat removal and accident analyses including aircraft crash. Basic safety is assured by thick-walled metal casks with monitored double lid Systems. They also reduce radiation to levels where workers can safely operate and maintain the casks inside the storage facility. The storage building e. g. provides additional shielding and protection against extemal hazards depending on the building construction. In addition, the storage building helps to reduce radiation levels at the boundary of the storage site well below regulatory limits given by the German Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrSchV).
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and infrared (IR) thermography techniques have been used in many civil engineering applications for the structural visualization and defect detection.
However, validation tests of the methods performance for the defection of defects in the nearsurface region with respect to the defects different material and depth below the surface are lacking. To overcome this, we performed GPR and IR thermography tests where the different material properties, shape and depth of defects were studied on concrete and the evaluation of seismic related damage propagation was assessed on stone masonry walls. The results showed that IR thermography, though being greatly affected by the presence of water in the specimen, outperformed GPR in the detection of defects very close to the surface. However, already at the depth of 3 cm and further up till almost 7.5 cm, the performance of GPR resembles the one of IR thermography for the detection of polystyrene (air) voids. On the plastered masonry walls, IR thermography could detect an air gap resulting from plaster delamination as small as 2 mm.
Moreover, structural cracking resulting from the induced lateral load could be detected at an early stage.
Relevant factors for the liquefaction susceptibility of cyclically loaded offshore monopiles in sand
(2013)
The offshore foundations may exhibit a relatively high liquefaction susceptibility due to the full saturation of the porous seabed and the cyclic nature of the typical offshore loads. Here, the particular relevance of some of the main factors that affect the liquefaction susceptibility of an offshore monopile will be addressed, focusing on the possibility of a progressive accumulation of residual pore water pressure within the saturated soil around a monopile under cyclic lateral loading. The discussion is based on numerical results obtained with a coupled FE model of the offshore foundation which includes the Biot-Zienkiewicz u-p model. A constitutive model of the Generalized Plasticity type has been used for the soil in order to reproduce important features of its behaviour under cyclic loading. This paper presents the findings derived from a parametric study of the problem and shows that the accumulation of residual pore pressure can produce significant changes of the pile's behaviour under external loading. The paper also investigates the effects caused by the loading from a realistic storm of moderate magnitude and the consequential transient degradation of the foundation's stiffness.
In this contribution we present a novel thermo-acoustic approach for the generation of broad band airborne ultrasound and investigate the applicability of resonance-free thermo-acoustic emitters for very short high pressure airborne ultrasound pulses. We report on measurements of thermo-acoustic emitter consisting of a 30 nm thin metallic film on a usual soda-lime glass substrate, generating sound pressure values of more than 140 dB at 60 mm distance from the transducer and compare the results with conventional piezoelectric airborne ultrasound transducers. Our experimental investigations show that such thermo-acoustic devices can be used as broad band emitters using pulse excitation.
