Sample functions, i.e., stochastic process realizations, are used to define cumulative damage phenomena which end into an observable terminal state or failure. The complexity inherent to such phenomena justifies the use of phenomenological models associated with the evolution of a physical magnitude feasible to be monitored during the test. Sample functions representing the damage evolution may be identified, once normalized to the interval [0,1], with cumulative distribution functions (cdfs), generally, of the generalized extreme value (GEV) family. Though usually only a fraction of the whole damage evolution, according to the specific problem handled, is available from the test record, the phenomenological models proposed allow the whole damage process to be recovered. In this way, down- and upwards extrapolations of the whole damage process beyond the scope of the experimental program are provided as a fundamental tool for failure prediction in the practical design. The proposed methodology is detailed and its utility and generality confirmed by its successive application to representative well-known problems in fatigue and fracture characterization. The excellent fittings, the physical interpretation of the model parameters and the good expectations to achieve a complete probabilistic analysis of these phenomena justify the interest of the proposed phenomenological approach with possible applications to other cumulative damage processes.
Scientific welding data covers a wide range of physical domains and timescales and are measured using various different sensors. Complex and highly specialized experimental setups at different welding institutes complicate the exchange of welding research data further. The WelDX research project aims to foster the exchange of scientific data inside the welding community by developing and establishing a new open source file format suitable for the documentation of experimental welding data and upholding associated quality standards. In addition to fostering scientific collaboration inside the national and international welding community an associated advisory committee will be established to oversee the future development of the file format. The proposed file format will be developed with regard to current needs of the community regarding interoperability, data quality and performance and will be published under an appropriate open source license. By using the file format objectivity, comparability and reproducibility across different experimental setups can be improved.
The largest percentage of component life under fatigue loading conditions is spent in the short crack regime and in the initial phase of long cracks. The use of Fracture Mechanics in the characterization of fatigue crack growth rate curves has proven to be a useful and adequate tool in the prediction of fatigue lifetimes as long as certain conditions are satisfied. All the above implies the need for a methodical and accurate procedure of assessment of the material response in order to achieve a reliable prediction of lifetime in components under safe conditions, based on the damage tolerance approach. It also highlights the need to analyse the response of increasingly reduced thicknesses, which, as time goes by, show greater differences with respect to those commonly studied and defined in standards and design guidelines, as well as to the experimental studies that can be found in the literature at present. Some examples of thin-walled components are turbine blades or certain additively manufactured parts where, additionally, variations in material properties can occur locally and should also be examined.
The aim of this study is to develop polymeric thin films for corrosion protection of magnesium alloy AZ31. As polymer matrix, poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) is selected due to its semiconducting properties and protonic conductivity. Polyacrylic acid is tested as crosslinking layers to improve interfacial adhesion. The macroscopic corrosion properties of the multilayer coatings are investigated by means of electrochemical methods, such as linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), in corrosive media simulating technical and biomedical applications. It is demonstrated that thin multilayer coatings can suppress the corrosion rates of magnesium alloys. To our best knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the use of P4VP as a conducting polymer film with protonic conductivity for corrosion protection of magnesium alloys.
Abstract Nowadays, Pt-Os binary systems are mainly considered as catalysts and electrocatalysts, but the role of Os in these processes is still poorly understood. The electronic structure of Pt-Os nanosystems remains a few studied as well. Using bimetallic (NH4)2[Pt0.5Os0.5Cl6] as a single-source precursor for preparing Pt-Os nanoalloy through the thermal decomposition in hydrogen and inert atmospheres, the relation of morphology, atomic ordering, and electronic structure of Pt-Os nanoalloy was examined by in situ Quick XAFS, XPS, PXRD, SEM, and HRTEM techniques. Being the only variable parameter, the decomposition atmosphere was found to govern the morphology of the Pt-Os nanoalloy and change the atomic ordering (alloying extent), which involves a change in the electronic structure. In a hydrogen atmosphere, the nanofibers (NFs) (ø ~ 5–6 nm) with the atomic ordering Oscore&Pt-richshell were observed to form; in a nitrogen atmosphere, thin nanoplates (NPLs) (~ 12 nm) with the atomic architecture Os-richcore&Ptrichshell were found out. The depletion in the Os 5d5/2 and Pt 5d5/2,3/2 states was revealed for Pt-Os nanoalloys.
This unusual result disagrees with the known d-band theory and indicates that there is a gain of non-d conduction electron counts at one or both sites. Mixed conductivity may exist in such Pt-Os nanoalloy that may be responsible for a manifestation of new physical properties of this binary system .
The space heating system accounts for 20%~50% of building energy consumption, and may lead to energy waste due to unreasonable controls. In this study, an energy-efficient floor heating system with intelligent control was proposed to improve energy efficiency of the system. In order to validate the concept of the proposed intelligent control, an experimental system was designed and constructed in Chengdu, China. Temperature, control cycle and energy consumption were then studied under different control strategies. The result shows that a larger flow rate of supply water will result in a longer control cycle and a lower control frequency, i.e., the average control cycle at 7 L min−1 is 1.7 h during the test day, while it is 1.5 h at 5 L min−1. Moreover, adopting water with a higher temperature and flow rate could achieve a higher efficiency of the system. The energy consumptions in case 1 (5 L min−1, 50 °C), case 2 (5 L min−1, 55 °C), case 5 (7 L min−1, 55 °C) and case 6 (7 L min−1, 60 °C) are 4746 kJ, 3534 kJ, 3093 kJ and 3028 kJ, respectively. Based on the experimental data, the supply water temperature is suggested to set lower than 60 °C considering human comfort.
Self-sustaining smoldering as a novel disposal approach for food waste with high moisture content
(2021)
This work aims to explore the self-sustaining smoldering treatment (SSST) for the destruction of food waste. The food waste used in this work mainly consists of cereal, vegetable, and meat. To examine the processing procedures and parameters, three experimental groups (raw food waste, food-waste paste and food-waste paste blended with anthracite) and five variables (moisture content, sand size, sand-to-food waste ratio, air flow and food waste-to-coal ratio) were extensively investigated. Results show that raw food waste with 40% moisture content can be disposed by SSST with the mass destruction ratio over 90%. However, the robustness of SSST for raw food waste is constrained by the heterogeneous issue due to a variety of components and sizes of food waste. This issue is addressed through stir pre-processing of raw food waste as food-waste paste. The robustness of SSST for food waste is significantly further enhanced only if a slight mass fraction of anthracite (<20% of raw food waste) is supplemented. This provides an alternative solution for employing SSST for raw food waste with very high moisture content.
Hydrogen leakage of vehicles in the tunnel is a great threat to the safety operation of the tunnel and longitudinal ventilation strategies have always been utilized to control the fire and smoke movement of rail transit, electric and fossil-fueled vehicles in the engineering field. It is in doubt whether the longitudinal ventilation strategy could still help to reduce the jet fire hazard of transportation with H2 power in the tunnel, considering the rapid development of the hydrogen energy. In present work, a numerical research on effects of longitudinal ventilation strategies on hydrogen jet flames in the tunnel is conducted. The results illustrate that longitudinal ventilation could affect the flame characteristics of jet flames greatly in the tunnel. The critical ventilation velocity increases firstly with the increase of hydrogen leakage rates and then changes little after a critical value. The predicted theoretical model of pool fires could well predict the critical ventilation velocity for hydrogen jet fires. With the increase of longitudinal ventilation velocity, maximum ceiling temperatures are decreased greatly. According to the heat releases, jet speeds and ventilation velocities, three kinds of flame bending characteristics of hydrogen jet fire could be observed due to different effects of the inertial force. At last, the stable thermal stratification could also be destroyed by large ventilation velocities but the corresponding ventilation velocity is far larger than the critical ventilation one. With the increase of longitudinal ventilation velocities, the height of thermal layer is reduced firstly and then maintained at a constant value.
A series of experiments were conducted in a 10L closed and vented tube with L/D = 10.0, and effects of initial fuel volume concentration, inert gas dilutions (diluted by N2 and CO2), inert gas–water mist twin fluid medium dilutions (diluted by N2-H2O twin fluid medium, CO2-H2O twin fluid medium) and end boundary conditions on overpressure transients of hydrocarbon fuel–air mixtures explosion were revealed. Results show that the overpressure-time profiles consistent with the dynamic evolution law of ‘approximately zero-1st overpressure rising stage-2nd overpressure rising stage-descending stage’, and ‘rate of overpressure rise-time’ curves exhibit the characteristics of multi-stages and multi-peaks, such as (dp/dt)(1,max), (dp/dt)(1,min), (dp/dt)(2,max) and (dp/dt)(2,min). Specifically, as the fuel volume concentration increased, both the maximum overpressures (pmax), and the maximum rates of overpressure rise ((dp/dt)(1,max) and (dp/dt)(2,max)) show a variation trend of increasing firstly and then decreasing, while the corresponding times (tmax, θ(1,max) , θ(2,max)) show a total different variation trend. Moreover, when YCH is lower than 1.88%, the value of (dp/dt)(1,max) is greater than (dp/dt)(2,max), while the value of (dp/dt)(1,max) was less than (dp/dt)(2,max), and when YCH was higher than 1.88%. The addition of N2 and CO2 can obviously inhibit the explosion intensity of hydrocarbon fuel, and the inhibition effect of CO2 is better than that of N2. Due to the synergy inhibition effect of the inert gas and ultrafine water mist, all the values of pmax, (dp/dt)(1,max) and (dp/dt)(2,max) diluted by inert gas-ultrafine water mist twin fluid medium were smaller than those diluted by sole inert gases. In addition, there are significant differences in the overpressure-time and the rate of overpressure rise-time profiles between closed and end venting explosions. The values of maximum overpressure and the rates of overpressure rise of the closed explosion were higher than those of the venting explosion, but the minimum rate of overpressure rise is a smaller one.
Safety concerns on cable tray fires in urban utility tunnels, which may further trigger huge casualties, ceiling structure damages, power failures and other domino effects, attract increasing attention in recent years. Determining the maximum excess ceiling gas temperature (MECT) induced by cable tray fires in urban utility tunnels is crucial to evaluate the fire risks. A series of one-layer horizontal cable tray fire experiments to explore the MECT were carried out in a large-scale utility tunnel without mechanical ventilations. The number of cables on the tray was varied from 8 to 18 in the experiments. The experimental results showed that the cable tray fire burning could be divided into three distinct stages, including ignition, self-sustaining and decaying stages. In the self-sustaining combustion stage, the cable tray was found to burn relatively steady. The mean MECT was also investigated since it represents one of the main characteristics of the cable tray fire. By redefining two parameters (the heat release rate and the effective ceiling height) in three classical MECT models proposed originally based on pool-fire, these three models could be extended to be able to predict the mean MECT generated from the cable tray fire (solid combustible) within 20% deviations. Consequently, two novel models were respectively proposed to predict the mean MECT at the self-sustaining burning period and the instantaneous MECT of one-layer horizontal cable tray fire in utility tunnel, which would be useful in the field of fire protection engineering.

Different analytical methods were used to assess the dissolution behaviour of UCNPs in varuous media. Potentiometric and optical data were correlated to develop a new non-invasive monitoring tool for particle dissolution
Assessing dissolution of upconverting nanoparticles by TEM, EDXS, potentiometry and fluorometry
(2021)
Inorganic lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) constitute an emerging class of near-infrared (NIR)-excitable luminescent reporters for bioimaging, fluorescence assays, sensors in bioanalysis, and optical thermometry as well as phosphors for photovoltaic and security applications.1 However, the use of UCNPs in bioimaging and cellular studies requires biocompatible particles. One possible cause of UCNP toxicity is the release of potentially harmful fluoride fluoride and lanthanide ions as revealed by dilution studies in aqueous environments, particularly under high dilution conditions.2-5 To address this issue, suitable surface coatings preventing such effects in combination with fast screening methods suited for online in situ analysis are desired.
Here we present a systematic study of differently sized β-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals stabilized with different surface coatings and different hydrophilic ligands varying in binding strength to the surface atoms in various aqueous environments at different temperatures.
Time resolved in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations by X-ray spectroscopy (XAS)
(2021)
Mechanochemical reactions promise a new direction for environmentally benign preparation of materials, and has been dubbed by IUPAC as one of the 10 chemical innovations that will change our world. Despite this significant promise, very little is known about the mechanisms that drive mechanochemical transformations, posing significant barriers to realizing their full potential. To this end, there is growing need to follow mechanochemical reactions in situ and in real time. We here describe advances in the development and application of XAS methods to monitor material synthesis in real time under mechanochemical conditions. We demonstrate the generality of our approaches by describing mechanochemical syntheses of materials by both vibratory ball milling and by Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM), where a time resolution of 1 second is for a whole XAS spectrum was achieved. Moreover, we describe how spectroscopic methods can be coupled to diffraction-based approaches, thereby providing new dimensions in understanding mechanochemical synthesis.

Understanding on how a machine learning model interprets data is a crucial step to verify its reliability and avoid overfitting. While the focus of the scientific community is nowadays orientated towards deep learning approaches, which are considered as black box approaches, this work presents a toolbox that is based on complementary methods of feature extraction and selection, where the classification decisions of the model are transparent and can be physically interpreted. On the example of guided wave benchmark data from the open guided waves platform, where delamination defects were simulated at multiple positions on a carbon fiber reinforced plastic plate under varying temperature conditions, the authors could identify suitable frequencies for further investigations and experiments. Furthermore, the authors presented a realistic validation scenario which ensures that the machine learning model learns global damage characteristics rather than position specific characteristics.
Investigation of the internal impact during a 9 m drop test of an accident-safe waste package
(2021)
The safety assessment of packages for the transport of radioactive material follows the IAEA regulations and guidance. The specified regulatory tests cover severe accidents and demonstrate the package containment system integrity.
Special attention must be drawn to the behaviour of the content which could move inside the package due to unpreventable gaps caused by the loading procedure and the structure of the content. A possible internal impact of the content which occurs during the drop tests onto the lid system is investigated. The IAEA regulations SSR-6 and the Guidance SSG-26, revised recently, consider input from Germany and France related to the significance of internal gaps.
In the context of a waste package design assessment, a model was equipped with a representative content to conduct a drop test with an internal impact. The weight and kinetic impact of this content covered all possible real contents. The objective of the test was to maximize the load onto the lid system and to prove the mechanical integrity by complying with the required leak tightness. The test was conducted
conservatively at a package temperature lower than -40 °C at the BAM Test Site Technical Safety.
This paper gives an overview of efforts to address internal gaps and their consequences, and the BAM efforts with the implementation of this topic into IAEA regulations and guidance material. The paper then focuses on the conduction of a drop test and investigation of internal component impact.

Steelmaking slags are a by-product of steel production, that are currently used primarily in road construction, earthwork, and hydraulic engineering. In this use, the iron bound in the steelmaking slags (< 30 wt.%) is lost.
Recovery of iron from steelmaking slags is possible by thermochemical reductive treatment. The reductive treatment of liquid steelmaking slags causes iron oxides to be reduced to metallic iron, which separates from the mineral phase due to its higher density. The chemical composition of the mineral phase is thus adapted to that of the Portland cement clinker and the mineral alite, the most important component of Portland cement, is formed. This way, crude iron can be recovered, and at the same time a hydraulic binder can be produced.
This process, however, is uneconomical due to the high temperatures required (~1800 °C). In the current project, the process is to be adapted so that the reduction of liquid steelmaking slag can be carried out at ~1600 °C. The chemical composition is to be modified in such a way that the melting temperature of the slags as well as their viscosity are in a technically suitable range and still a product with good cementitious properties is obtained.
