The adsorption of cetyltrimethyammonium bromide (CTAB) on a hanging mercury electrode is studied in various electrolyte systems and temperatures. A condensed film is formed at negative potentials and at room temperature only in the presence of KBr. The decrease of the temperature favors the formation of the condensed film. Hysterisis phenomena are observed during the potential scans at both directions. Capacity time curves at the potentials where the film is formed show a nucleation and growth mechanism, with induction time depending on potential, which has been investigated using Avrami formulation and has been explained as a progressive one-dimensional nucleation with constant growth rate. The nucleation rate increases while moving toward more negative potentials. A linear decrease of the capacitance with time was observed in some cases independent of the measuring potential in a relative large potential range. The different types of micelles can affect the adsorption of CTAB on mercury. An unusual capacitance transient observed at a very narrow negative potential range is attributed to the formation of hemicylinders. The condensed film in the presence of the other electrolytes is observed only at high concentrations (1 M) and very low temperatures (5°C).
Fire Tests with LPG Vessels
(2002)
The results and execution of many full scale fire engulfment tests on 3.6 and 4.85 m³ LPG tanks, protected with thin sublimation and intumescent coatings, mineral wool with steel jackets, vermiculite coatings and water spray systems, are presented.
Additional furnace tests with coated steel plates have been carried out to optimize the necessary coating thickness.
Similarly, an overview of the test conditions for the recognition based on technical rules and BAM requirements for fire protection systems of LPG tanks will be shown and explained.
When the internal pressure reaches the vessel bursting pressure a violent tank rupture, fragmenting of the shell and spontaneous release of the content are the consequences. In case of LPG this event is called "boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion (BLEVE)" with expanding fireball as an additional severe consequence.
For this reason the sufficient fire protection of LPG vessels is an important item.
The tests demonstrated sufficient vessel safety during 90 minutes of a full fire engulfment.
It will also be shown that the examinations and results are transferable to bigger tanks.
The transferability of the test results is illustrated by diagrams which show the dependence of the coating thickness against the shell thickness of the tank.
All tested tanks were equipped with pressure relief valves (PRVs) and partially filled with propane.

Tests with different Type B casks confirm the existence of effects with stress peaks in cask components due to
interactions between the cask and its contents. These effects can be caused by a delayed strike of the content onto surrounding cask components which cannot be excluded if the content is movable. Some results of the drop tests with two different Type B casks and with a model designed for the study of this problem are presented in the paper. Results of calculations performed with the ABAQUS computer code and by use of analytical methods to simulate the measured effects are discussed.
Determination of pentachlorphenol (PCP) in waste wood - method comparison by a collaborative trial
(2002)
Two independently developed and validated procedures for the determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in waste wood were compared by means of a collaborative trial. Both methods foresee quantification of PCP by gas chromatography (GC-ECD) after acetylation and differ with regard to the use of methanol or toluene/sulphuric acid, respectively, as solvent in the sonication extraction step. Test samples with established analyte homogeneity were prepared from a ground real life starting material. A total of 23 participating laboratories with experience in wood preservative analysis were instructed to apply both methods to three levels of content in the range of 0.520 mg PCP/kg. In case of the toluene/sulphuric acid extraction, lower recoveries and higher interlaboratory dispersion of results at the higher PCP contents were observed. Seen against the background of the Horwitz equation a reproducibility standard deviation of not, vert, similar19% for the methanol extraction at the 4.5 mg/kg level meets the requirement for a sound analytical method. Thus, the sonication extraction procedure with methanol has been annexed as a reference method to the German waste wood regulation.
Due to the utilisation of 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFE) as extraction solvent the IR-spectrometric determination of total petrol hydrocarbon (TPH) in soil according to ISO/TR 11046 has been replaced by gas chromatography/flame ionisation detection (GC/FID) after extraction with a halogen-free solvent according to ISO/DIS 16703:2001. The results obtained with both methods by field laboratories in three proficiency testing (PT) rounds are compared. The consensus means obtained with GC/FID are typically 10%-20% (ranging between 0% and 25%) higher than those found with IR-spectroscopy. On the contrary, coefficients of variation (CV) are roughly double in case of GC/FID and are briefly discussed against the background of the Horwitz equation.
Radiography is a helpful method to identify the inherent structure of unexploded ordnances (UXOs). Portable Computed Radiography (CR) systems on the basis of phosphor imaging plates , have attracted attention for NDT-applications during the last few years. A portable IP system ACR 2000 has been tested for X-ray inspection of UXO's in the field. Digitised radiographs are presented to explain the needs and demands for a reliable characterisation of UXO's. Computed radiographs of UXOs are compared with film radiographs exposed in the same way, to evaluate the reliability and to identify advantages and disadvantages of the CR system for UXO inspection. Film based and CR systems provide sufficient information for identification of chemical warfare agents in UXO's, which is an essential problem for explosive ordnance disposal. The advantages and the potential of the portable CR system is discussed on the basis of experiences gathered during different field trails.
The fabric of mineral liner materials that had been exposed to organic compounds over a 12-year period was investigated as part of a wider research project. Macromorphological and micromorphological changes in the fabric were identified using computed tomography and polarisation microscopy.
Special care was taken to ensure artefact free sampling and sample preparation, in particular, the drying method used, has a substantial influence on the quality of the thin sections.
Fabric changes due to contaminant permeation over several years are, by and large, relatively small and their intensity is material specific. Silty clay CML1, in particular, contains a somewhat greater number of fissures and voids in comparison with the original material. The superposition of various processes in both test procedures and sample preparation may lead to fabric changes which can impede interpretation of the results.
Disc brakes are widely used in cars, trains, and other vehicles. For understanding the basic processes occurring during the friction process, information on the surface topography of brake pads and discs is needed, in addition to information about chemistry and thermodynamics. In this paper, samples of pads and discs were analysed using white light interferometry. The topography of the surfaces was measured quantitatively. Using software tools described in a previous paper [Wear 248 (2001) 121], the distributions of area, height, and slope of the contact patches were computed. Characteristic properties of the contact patches were found to describe the influence of the test parameters such as friction power and testing time.
A consortium has recently been initiated to study the macroscopic and microscopic properties of basaltic and andesitic rocks as analogue materials for Mars. The goal of this project is the integration of diverse spectroscopic approaches to
evaluate the composition and texture of Mars materials using both in situ and remote sensing techniques. Initial emphasis is placed on assessment of the mineral composition for low albedo areas (basalt vs andesite vs weathering) of the Martian surface through spectral analysis of a suite of samples that have been exceptionally well characterized in the laboratory. The initial results indicate that the visible/NIR reflectance spectra, mid-IR reflectance and emission spectra, and Mössbauer spectra contain consistent diagnostic features associated with the measured modal mineralogy and provide baseline data for the first group of well characterized basalts. The consortium study involves integrating multiple remote sensing techniques for recent and upcoming missions to Mars in order to compare the results obtained by these instruments and thereby strengthen interpretive results.

The surface properties of original high strength and preoxidized high modulus carbon fibers were altered by electrocopolymerizing acryl amide and carbazole and therefore depositing a copolymer coating onto the fibers. Scanning electron microscopy and zeta-potential measurements confirmed the presence of a rough but dense and continuous electrocoating with a basic surface character. Therefore, lsquogoodrsquo adhesion behavior between the electrocoated carbon fibers and an epoxy resin matrix should be expected. The interfacial adhesion was measured using the single fiber pull-out and single fiber indentation test. It was shown that only lsquointermediatersquo adhesion was present between the carbon fibers and the electrocoating, but superior adhesion between the coating and epoxy resin exists. The single fiber model composites always failed at the fiber/electrocoating interface. However, as shown by using the indentation test, the interfacial adhesion between fibers and electrocoating can be significantly improved if preoxidized fibers are used as substrate for electropolymerization. A very high tensile strength for the electrocoating can be expected as derived from the single fiber pull-out tests.
Multiple pulse investigations of 130-fs Ti:sapphire laser-induced damage of a high reflecting mirror consisting of alternating ?/4-layers of Ta2O5 and SiO2 and a single 500-nm Ta2O5 film were performed. In both cases, fused silica served as the substrate. For a fixed number of 1000 laser pulses per spot, a decrease in the damage threshold fluence of the mirror by a factor of two was observed by changing the repetition rate from 10 Hz to 1 kHz. A single 500-nm Ta2O5 film shows higher damage resistance compared to the mirror. The mirror and the Ta2O5 film samples were partially coated with a 300-nm-thick aluminium layer. The aluminium coating does not influence the damage threshold of the dielectrics underneath.
We investigated the initial modification and ablation of crystalline silicon with single and multiple Ti:sapphire laser pulses of 5 to 400 fs duration. In accordance with earlier established models, we found the phenomena amorphization, melting, re-crystallization, nucleated vaporization, and ablation to occur with increasing laser fluence down to the shortest pulse durations. We noticed new morphological features (bubbles) as well as familiar ones (ripples, columns). A nearly constant ablation threshold fluence on the order of 0.2 J/cm2 for all pulse durations and multiple-pulse irradiation was observed. For a duration of ,100 fs, significant incubation can be observed, whereas for 5 fs pulses, the ablation threshold does not depend on the pulse number within the experimental error. For micromachining of silicon, a pulse duration of less than 500 fs is not advantageous.
The application of microwave measurements to the characterisation of rubber compounds vulcanisation is considered. The behaviour of mechanical and microwave (20 GHz) dielectric parameters during vulcanisation was investigated for rubber compounds with different concentrations of active and non-active carbon black. An increase of concentration or activity of carbon black results in the increase of both dielectric permittivity ε?(T) and loss ε?(T) and in the increase of torsion modulus as well. The start of the vulcanisation reaction is indicated by an increase of dielectric permittivity and torsion modulus in all investigated unvulcanised compounds with carbon black. While for compounds with non-active carbon black the vulcanisation can be better indicated by the ε?(T) anomaly, for compounds with active carbon black it is more clearly seen by the change of ε?(T) behaviour.
A comparative analysis of selected standards and guidelines on Acoustic Emission testing published by international and national organisations yields an assessment of the current status of standardisation. Areas where existing documents do not yet exist or appear unsatifactory for some reason are identified and formulated as perspectives for further work. In the future, structural integrity assessment with Acoustic Emission methods is expected to gain in importance.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of Fe3+ ions in Al2O3 is studied in powder samples prepared by different routes and/or modified by thermal or mechanical treatments, with different doping levels and grain sizes. The measurements are performed in various frequency bands (S, X, K, Q and W) and with bimodal detection in X-band. Simulations of the spectra are achieved with a code designed for computing EPR powder spectra described by any spin Hamiltonian including second-, fourth-and sixth-order ZFS terms (S ? 7/2). The linewidths, intensities and lineshapes are accounted for. The lineshape is Gaussian at low Fe3+ concentration whereas it is Lorentzian for higher concentration. The linewidths are interpreted as the superimposition of three main contributions: intrinsic linewidth, dipolar broadening and broadening due to lattice imperfections. The latter is tentatively interpreted in terms of quadrupolar spin Hamiltonian parameter distributions treated using first-order perturbation theory. Whatever the sample, only the b22 spin Hamiltonian parameter is found to be distributed around a mean zero value which corresponds to rhombic distortions. Angle and bond length distributions are tentatively extracted from the b22 distributions which gives some insight into the local order around the spin probe in relation to the preparation and treatment of the samples.
The dismutation of CHClF2 to CHF3 and CHCl3 was used to probe the effect of γ-Al2O3 fluorination on fluorine-against-chlorine (Cl/F) exchange reactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray excited Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy were employed to probe the modifications at the surface of γ-Al2O3 accompanying the initial stages of fluorination. The results suggest that fluorine uptake by γ-Al2O3 starts initially at the surface of the oxide particles, with the formation of a fluorine species that is characterised by a single bond and a high effective charge q. Catalytic Cl/F-exchange is only observed after accumulation of higher fluorine concentrations, for which insertion of fluorine into the sub-surface region of the oxide crystallites has commenced. Quantitative XPS shows that the fluorination level must exceed approximately 10 atom% of the anions to achieve catalytic activity. The spectroscopic evidence suggests that the formation of aluminium oxofluorides is sufficient to provide catalytic activity. The presence of an AlF3 phase is not a condition for the observation of catalytic activity, even though defect-rich AlF3 is ultimately the endpoint of the fluorination process and is itself a Cl/F exchange catalyst.
Two different methods of nanolithography, namely dynamic plowing lithography (DPL) and indentation by means of force-displacement curves (FDI), have been compared by performing them on two different polymers, poly (methylmethacrylate) and polystyrene. No fundamental differences can be found out in the efficiency of the two methods, i.e., in the depth of the lithographed structure as a function of the scanning parameters. The main drawback of FDI is that it is much more time consuming than DPL. On the other hand, when the sample is lithographed with DPL, the border walls that surround the lithographed structure are very much bigger than the border walls created through FDI. The physicochemical properties of the border walls created through DPL have been investigated. Several experimental data reveal that such border walls are very much softer and looser than unmodified polymers and suggest that during DPL the fast oscillating tip is able to break polymer chains. This does not happen with FDI, where border walls are simply made up of the material carved out by the tip. A method to eliminate these undesirable border walls is suggested.
Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) surfaces have been modified by dynamic plowing lithography. The resulting modified structures, presenting regions of different densities and stiffnesses, have been studied by forcedisplacement curves. The elasto-plastic response, the stiffness, and the adhesion of the modified samples have been characterized. Forcedisplacement curves are able to distinguish between unmodified PMMA and two different structures resulting from the lithography, i.e. compressed PMMA and low density PMMA. In particular, the low density regions are made up of cluster-like globular particles, whose elasto-plastic response and adhesion are measured and whose contribution to the total elasto-plastic response and to the adhesion has been studied in detail.
The adhesion of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) films, whose surface has been previously structured by dynamic plowing lithography (DPL), has been measured by means of forcedisplacement curves. The different adhesion of modified and unmodified PS leads to the assumption that polymer chains are broken during DPL. After measuring the energy dissipated by the tip during DPL, in order to check that the transferred energy is sufficient to break covalent bonds, the polymer chain scission caused by the lithographic process has been definitely confirmed by size exclusion chromatography measurements of the lithographed films.
Today's civil engineering NDT needs are for quantitative, fast to apply and easy to interpret methods. They are required on site both for evaluation of existing structures/infrastructure and for quality control in new construction. With this purpose, BAM has carried out in-situ feasibility studies, using radar, impact-echo and ultrasonic-echo methods. Two examples are given of their combined application on different railway slab–track constructions, using high frequency radar, scanning impact-echo and ultrasonic array methods. The aim was to evaluate limitations and advantages, comparability and complementarity of these methods. The on-site measurements demonstrated the possibility to investigate, with good accuracy via NDT, the bonding conditions between sleepers and slab, to locate voids and measure layer thickness. The acoustic and electromagnetic methods used, were found to be complementary.
Alkyl polyglycosides today represent the most important sugar surfactant. Nonionic sugar surfactants produced via different synthetic routes are mixtures of alkyl homologues, oligomers, anomers and isomers. Alkyl homologues and oligomers of alkyl mono- and diglucosides were separated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with methanolwater as the mobile phase using a gradient elution. The gradient was optimized in respect to a simultaneous separation of alkyl glycosides according to their alkyl chain length and alkyl polyoxyethylene glucosides with regard to their length of the polyoxyethylene spacer. The separation of alkyl glycosides into ?- and ?-anomers was carried out by normal-phase HPLC with isooctaneethyl acetate (60:40, v/v)2-propanol in the gradient mode. Light scattering detection was used. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectra of alkyl glucosides and dodecyl glucosides with oxyethylene spacer groups are presented.

Tc(III) and Re(III) complexes [M(NS3)(CNR)] (M = Re, 99mTc, NS3 = 2,2?,2?-nitrilotris(ethanethiol), CNR = functionalized isocyanide bearing a derivative of WAY 100635) have been synthesized and characterized. Re was used as Tc surrogate for chemical characterization and in vitro receptor-binding studies. For two representatives subnanomolar affinities for the 5-HT1A as well as for the alpha1-adrenergic receptor were reached. Biodistribution studies in rats of the 99mTc complexes showed brain uptakes between 0.3 and 0.5% ID/organ (5 min p.i.). In vitro autoradiography of one 99mTc representative in sections of post mortem human brain indicate its accumulation in 5-HT1A receptor-rich brain regions. However, addition of the specific 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT as well as the alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonist prazosin could not substantially block this tracer accumulation. A preliminary SPET study in a monkey showed negligible brain uptake.
The ?- branching ratio of 64Cu was determined by investigating the resulting decay products in copper doped by neutron transmutation. The numbers of 64Zn and 64Ni atoms were analyzed using isotope dilution analysis combined with thermal ionization mass spectrometry. A ?- branching ratio of (38.06±0.30)% was obtained, which agrees with the study of Kawada (Appl. Radiat. Isot. 37 (1) (1986) 7) to a higher accuracy. However, our result differs from the value cited in the NUDAT database of (39.0±0.3)%.
A procedure has been developed for the synthesis of N-cyclopentadienyl amidinium ylides of the general formula C5(CO2Me)4[ArNC(Ar')NHAr]. According to the X-ray diffraction data, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and MNDO quantum-chemical calculations, the title compounds have a zwitterionic structure with the positive charge localized over the amidine NÄCÄN triad, and the negative charge, over the cyclopentadiene fragment. The configuration of the amidine moiety is stabilized by additional interaction of the NH hydrogen atom with the negatively charged cyclopentadiene ring (-bonding). The ylides are chiral due to atropoisomerism arising from a high energy barrier (G 298 >25 kcal/mol) to rotation of the Ar' substituent about the ordinary CÄC bond in the amidinium fragment.
