The ability to track electrode degradation, both spatially and temporally, is fundamental to understand performance loss during operation of lithium batteries. X-ray computed tomography can be used to follow structural and morphological changes in electrodes; however, the direct detection of electrochemical processes related to metallic lithium is difficult due to the low sensitivity to the element. In this work, 4-dimensional neutron computed tomography, which shows high contrast for lithium, is used to directly quantify the lithium diffusion process in spirally wound Li/SOCl2 primary cells. The neutron dataset enables the quantification of the lithium transport from the anode and the accumulation inside the SOCl2 cathode to be locally resolved. Complementarity between the collected neutron and X-ray computed tomographies is shown and by applying both methods in concert we have observed lithium diffusion blocking by the LiCl protection layer and identified all cell components which are difficult to distinguish using one of the methods alone.
The evaluation of measurement uncertainty is essential for testing and calibration laboratories. This paper provides a general process description for the determination of the measurement uncertainty of quantitative data and its application to the conformity assessment with examples, and how to deal with the uncertainty of qualitative (Boolean) results, e. g. when "Alarm" or "No alarm" occours in an instrument display.

Learned block iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm for photothermal super resolution imaging
(2020)
Block-sparse regularization is already well-known in active thermal imaging and is used for multiple measurement based inverse problems. The main bottleneck of this method is the choice of regularization parameters which differs for each experiment. To avoid time-consuming manually selected regularization parameters, we propose a learned block-sparse optimization approach using an iterative algorithm unfolded into a deep neural network. More precisely, we show the benefits of using a learned block iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm that is able to learn the choice of regularization parameters. In addition, this algorithm enables the determination of a suitable weight matrix to solve the underlying inverse problem. Therefore, in this paper we present the algorithm and compare it with state of the art block iterative shrinkage thresholding using synthetically generated test data and experimental test data from active thermography for defect reconstruction. Our results show that the use of the learned block-sparse optimization approach provides smaller normalized mean square errors for a small fixed number of iterations than without learning. Thus, this new approach allows to improve the convergence speed and only needs a few iterations to generate accurate defect reconstruction in photothermal super resolution imaging.
Over decades, the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) has established a sophisticated calibration laboratory for force, temperature and electrical quantities. Since more than 15 years it is accredited, currently by the national accreditation body (DAkkS), and offers its service also to external entities on a global scale. As a public provider, we are furthermore committed to research and development activities that demand measurements with highest quality and low level of uncertainties. Two R&D examples are highlighted within this contribution.
Modern air-liners and rotor blades of wind turbines are basically made of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP). Their failure heavily impairs the serviceability and the operational safety. Consequently, knowledge of the failure behavior under static and cyclic loads is of great interest to estimate the operational strength and to compare the performance of different materials. Ideally, the damage evolution under operational load is determined with in-situ non-destructive testing techniques. Here, we report on in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging of tensile stress induced cracks in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) due to inter fiber failure. An in-house designed compact-tensile testing machine with a load range up to 15 kN was integrated into the beam path. Since conventional radiographs do not reveal sufficient contrast to distinct cracks due to inter fiber failure and micro cracking from fiber bundles, the Diffraction Enhanced Imaging technique (DEI) is applied in order to separate primary and scattered (refracted) radiation by means of an analyzer crystal. In the laboratory, scanning X-ray refraction topography of CFRP has been applied long before but it comes along with several disadvantages: the long total measuring time hampers real time (in-situ) measurements and the required small beam size hinders end-to-end imaging. The introduced technique overcomes both drawbacks. Imaging and tensile test rig are run unsynchronized at the greatest possible frame rate (0.7 s-1 at 28.8 µm pixel size) and smallest possible strain rate (5.5∙10-4 s-1). For 0°/90° non-crimped fabrics (ncf) the first inter fiber cracks occurred at 380 MPa (strain 0.7 %). Prior to failure at about 760 MPa (strain 2.0 %) we observe the evolution of a nearly equidistant 1 mm grid of cracks running across the entire sample in the fully damaged state before total failure.
The 5G technology promises real time data transmission for industrial processes, autonomous driving, virtual and augmented reality, E-health applications and many more. The Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics (LTCC) technology is well suited for the manufacturing of microelectronic components for such applications. Still, improvement of the technology such as further miniaturization is required. This study focuses on the characterization of inner metallization of LTCC multilayer modules, especially on the vertical interconnect access (VIA). Critical considerations for this characterization are delamination, pore clustering in and at the edge of the VIA, deformation, and stacking offset. A LTCC multilayer consisting of a glassy crystalline matrix with silver based VIAs was investigated by synchrotron x-ray tomography (CT). The aim of this study is to propose a multitude of structural characteristic values to maximize the information gained from the available dataset. Data analysis has been done with the open source software ImageJ as well as several additional plugins. The high-resolution CT data was evaluated through 2D slices for accessibility reasons. The segmentation of all 2000 slices to assess the different regions e.g. pores, silver and glass ceramic was done by a supervised machine learning algorithm. A quantitative evaluation of shape, deformation, and porosity of the VIA with respect to its dimensions is presented and the suitability of the characterization approach is assessed.
As opposed to reviewing results on experimental determination of residual stress by diffraction, this paper discusses the open issues when dealing with residual stress determination in additive manufactured parts, in particular those manufactured with laser powder bed fusion techniques. Three points are addressed in detail: (a) the proper determination of the strain-free reference d0, (b) the problem of the determination of the principal axes, and (c) the use of the correct diffraction elastic constants. It is shown that all methods to determine the strain-free reference d0 suffer from caveats, and care must be taken in evaluating the most suitable for the problem being tackled. In addition, it is shown that, in some systems, the principal axes do correspond to the geometrical axes of the specimen, but this needs to be systematically checked, especially in the case of uni- or bidirectional hatching strategies. Finally, the need to experimentally determine the proper diffraction elastic constants is underlined, especially in the case of strongly textured specimens, which again depends on the deposition strategy.

Planar tomography and numerical analysis for damage characterization of impact loaded RC plates
(2020)
The damage analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) is of high interest for reasons of effective maintenance and structural safe-ty of buildings. The damage structures of RC plates loaded by an impact were investigated, applying X-ray planar tomogra-phy and finite element method (FEM). Planar tomography allows getting three-dimensional information of the RC elements and the damage including crack, spalling and scabbing. The FEM model validated on the tomography data justifies the appli-cation for further predictions of the damage description. In this study, we investigated concrete plates of three different thick-ness subjected to impacts at different low- and medium-velocity, whereby the used impactor had a flat tip, which resulted in small penetrations on the front side and scabbing on the rear side. In order to quantify the damage, the damage volume and its distribution through the plate were computed and the correlations between degree of damage and impact velocity were found out.
Entwicklung eines luftgekoppelten Ultraschall-Echo-Prüfverfahrens mittels fluidischer Anregung
(2020)
The creep strengthening mechanisms in (age-hardenable) aluminum alloys are analyzed on the basis of a new microstructural study of powder samples, an analysis of a comprehensive revision of creep data from the literature, and a new modeling approach. A strategy based on the strength difference (SD) method to separate the contributions of solid solution atoms and precipitates to creep strengthening is proposed. The new methodology considers the combination of the two contributions avoiding the need of a threshold stress term in the creep equation. The contribution of both precipitates and solid solution is taken into account by means of the analysis of the lattice parameter variation with aging time. For this study, powders of two commercial AA2xxx alloys have been analyzed using diffraction methods. The experimental results are modeled using Lubarda’s approach combined with the SD method.
POD=1/(1+e^(-A·(m-B))).
In this thesis, a distributed Brillouin sensor in perfluorinated polymer optical fibers utilizing BOFDA is presented. These commercially available polymer fibers offer beneficial characteristics for sensing applications such as higher break down strain up to 100 %, minimal bending radii below 2 mm, higher sensitivity to temperature and lower sensitivity to strain compared to their silica equivalent.
The chosen wavelength of operation at 1319 nm corresponds to lower fiber propagation loss (< 37 dB/km) compared to other approaches at 1550 nm (150 - 250 dB/km). A 86 m PFGI-POF was successfully measured by BOFDA with spatial resolution of 3.4 m.
The findings related to humidity influences can serve as a basis for future distributed humidity sensors not only limited to stimulated Brillouin backscattering.
The improvement potential of ultrafast all-optical switching by soliton self-trapping, using all-solid dual-core fibres with high index contrast, was analyzed numerically. The study of the femtosecond nonlinear propagation was performed based on coupled generalised nonlinear Schrödinger equations considering three fibre architectures: homogeneous cladding all-solid, photonic crystal air-glass, and photonic crystal all-solid. The structural geometries of all three architectures were optimised in order to support high-contrast switching performance in the C-band, considering pulse widths at the 100 fs level. Comparing the three structural alternatives, the lowest switching energies at common excitation parameters (1700 nm and 70 fs pulses) were predicted for the homogeneous cladding dual-core structure. Further optimization of the excitation wavelength and pulse width resulted in lower switching energies and simultaneous improvement of the switching contrasts at the combination of 1500 nm, 75 fs pulses and a fibre length of 43 mm. The spectral aspect in this optimised case expresses a broadband and uniform switching character with a span of over 200 nm and a contrast exceeding 30 dB at more frequency channels.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a term that groups together techniques adopted to evaluate in a continued fashion the structural integrity and degradation of technical appliances. SHM is particularly attractive for components that are difficult to access or expensive to take off-line. Among many other techniques, SHM can be performed using ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) which have an advantage of traveling over Long distances. Various guided wave modes exist along with many methods for their generation and sensing, e.g by means of interdigital transducers (IDT). This contribution is dedicated to the design and characterization of a flexible piezopolymerbased IDT which allows for the selective excitation of UGW, resulting in more straightforward data analysis. The designed IDT was characterized using a 3D Laser Doppler Vibrometer (3D LDV) in the air to identify and analyze the IDT’s Vibration modes. Then the transducer was mounted on an aluminum plate, and the generated wavefield was measured with the 3D LDV.
According to this investigation, we demonstrate that it is possible to selectively excite desired guided wave mode, namely the A0 mode, suppressing the excitation of the S0 mode. Moreover, the measured wavefield allows for analysis of the directivity of the designed IDT. All in all the results show good correlation between theoretical predictions and measured values, thus allowing to use the current design in terms of selective excitation as it is.
Material qualification for laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processes are often based on results derived from additively manufactured (AM) bulk material or small density cubes, although it is well known that the part geometry has a tremendous influence on the heat flux and, therefore, on the thermal history of an AM component. This study shows experimentally the effect of simple geometrical obstructions to the heat flux on cooling behavior and solidification conditions of 316L stainless steel processed by L-PBF. Additionally, it respects two distinct inter layer times (ILT) as well as the build height of the parts. The cooling behavior of the parts is in-situ traced by infrared (IR) thermography during the built-up. The IR signals reveal significant differences in cooling conditions, which are correlated to differences in melt pool geometries. The acquired data and results can be used for validation of computational models and improvements of quality assurance.

A large amount of data and information is collected in the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) in civil engineering. The weakly structured data are usually evaluated with regard to specific testing tasks (e.g. geometry determination, damage localization, quality assurance). While the data offers great economic potential, i.e. to support construction planning, monitoring and maintenance processes, the evaluation is manual and case-by-case and therefore too inefficient for broader applications. We present recent visions and approaches how these large amounts of data need to be handled in the future and how we aim to make the acquired knowledge accessible to our stakeholders. Building on initiatives in materials research, we stress the importance of further research in the field of semantic data integration particularly motivate why an ontology is needed for the area of NDT in civil engineering.
To better understanding the failure of adhesive joints tensile tests were carried out on miniature test specimens from Norway spruce in the synchrotron. Urea-formaldehyde resin was used as adhesive. e. For comparison purposes, tensile tests were carried out on solid wood and on bonded miniature tensile shear samples with acoustic emission. The acoustic emission signals of all the experiments occurred with classified pattern recognition. This resulted in two classes of signals for each two frequency peaks. One class consisted of the low-frequency and the other of the higher-frequency peak of higher intensity, but this was essentially independent from the structure (solid wood or plywood) and size scale of the test specimens. The influence of the adhesive layers was determined on wood test specimens on laboratory scale and on miniature test specimens with an adhesive layer and selected fiber orientations. This gave evidence that the sound emission signals from the failure of the adhesive layer presumably of the class with low frequency signals peak in the range of services can be assigned.
The present paper describes the development of a sensor material that changes its fluorescence in the presence of gaseous ammonia in a relevant concentration range. The implementation into a semi-automatic gas measurement device enables low-cost, precise, simple and fast monitoring of low con-centrations of harmful gases, like ammonia, and hence can help to improve the climate monitoring in livestock housing, barns or stables.

(2020)
This project addresses the application of safe workplaces in offices and chemical laboratories where indoor air quality plays an important role. The LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is used as a communication interface to make important sensor data globally accessible. The goal of the development is to create a sensor node and an online and offline solution that collects the data from the sensor nodes and stores it on a local server or in a cloud. In cooperation with the companies WISTA GmbH and IONOS, a test sensor network is going to be established in the Berlin-Adlershof area.

Porous ceramic diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are extruded products that possess macroscopic anisotropic mechanical and thermal properties. This anisotropy is caused by both morphologic features (mostly the orientation of porosity) and crystallographic texture. We systematically studied those two aspects in a cordierite and two aluminum titanate (AT) ceramic materials of different porosity using mercury porosimetry, gas adsorption, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray refraction radiography. We found that a lower porosity in AT content implies a larger isotropy of both the crystal texture and the porous space orientation. We also found that, analogous to cordierite, AT crystallites do align with their axis of negative thermal expansion along the extrusion direction. However, unlike what found for cordierite, the aluminium titanate crystallite form is such that a more pronounced (0 0 2) texture along the extrusion direction implies porosity aligned perpendicular to it.
Signalmerkmale des Radarverfahrens zur Klassifizierung von Feuchteschäden in Fußbodenaufbauten
(2020)

Monitoring of concrete structures is of utmost importance in maintenance and preservation of infrastructure. As a part of the DFG research group CoDA (Concrete Damage Assessment by Coda Waves), the works within this PhD project aim for identification of damage sensitive parameters extracted from ultrasonic measurements obtained with embedded sensors, the determination of environmental (reversible) influences on the signal and the localisation of damaged areas. The main technique used for the detection of changes in the monitored material is the so-called Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI). It uses the later part of the ultrasonic recording for the detection of small changes in the sensed area and the calculation of a relative velocity change. Using this technique we can show that we are able to detect changes in concrete temperature with ultrasound measurements. This enables temperature correction for ultrasound monitoring with embedded sensors. The crucial point for imaging and localisation with coda waves is the calculation of the so-called sensitivity kernels. We propose the application of numerical wave simulations for the kernel calculations instead of the commonly used diffusivity equation. Using finite-difference wave modelling code from our DFG project partners we are able to calculate those Kernels and first results are shown in this presentation. The major task for the second year will be the development and implementation of the inversion algorithm as well as the preparation of validation experiments.
The ever more ambitious strategic goals of meeting the requirements in ensuring technical safety and security of civil structures have resulted in flourishing development of innovative structural health monitoring (SHM) technologies for early damage diagnosis and prognosis. At the same time, implementing SHM systems provides tangible economic benefits derived from lower life-cycle costs associated with reduction in the maintenance, repair and insurance expenses. Due to the large size and harsh environmental conditions common to most civil structures, the broad range of favorable physical-mechanical properties of POFs allow for customized monitoring solutions for a wide variety of applications.
In addition to common SHM-related advantages of optical fibers including their electromagnetic immunity, small size, lightweight as well as spark-free and non-conductive characteristics, POFs offer better bending and fracture resistance then their glass-counterparts. Particularly, the improved robustness of POFs, their ease of handling, low Young’s Modulus and high elastic limit of 10% compared to 1% in silica glass [1] are relevant to practical applications. Depending on the composition, dopants, drawing process and geometry [2], strain measurement up to 45% [3] or even above 100% [4,5] has been demonstrated with standard POFs. Therefore, the dominant market expected for POF sensors includes monitoring of high-strain-rate deformations in earthwork structures, crack detection in concrete and masonry structures [6] or overstressing in high-rise steel structures exposed to moisture, corrosion, leakage, fatigue, vibration, fire, overflow, earthquake and intentional damage. For fracture monitoring within concrete structures, the sensory usage of POFs becomes especially favorable since the extremely alkaline environment of concrete mixtures is well known to be corrosive to standard silica glass optical fibers (GOFs) [1,7].
Most of advanced distributed sensing techniques are commonly based on Rayleigh backscatter reflectometry using commercially available multimode (MM) POFs. Such typical MM POFs range from a step-index (SI) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) POF having a core diameter of 1 mm to a low-loss graded-index (GI) perfluorinated (PF) POF based on poly(perfluorobutenyl-vinylether) also known as CYTOP [8] with a 50 µm core diameter. The relatively low optical attenuation value of 30 dB/km at 1.3 µm [9,10] makes PFGI POFs also interesting for distributed Brillouin sensing [11-14]. Compared to GOFs, PFGI POFs offer better potential for temperature measurement and have comparably low theoretical attenuation limit [15]. Therefore, POF-based distributed Brillouin sensing is expected to play an important role in the future of SHM, especially at high-strain ranges. The significance of the Brillouin measurment technique can be also enhanced by further development of the single-mode (SM) POFs which are still subject of research and are used for coherent detection techniques [6]. Furthermore, SM PMMA POFs have been characterized in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer setup for strain values up to 15.8% [16,17].
The current development of SM perfluorinated and microstructured POFs (mPOFs) represents an immense promise for quasi-distributed dynamic measurement at high strain levels based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology. While SM mPOFs with optical losses of about 1 dB/m can be fabricated [6], the SM PF POFs presented by Zhou et al. feature low attenuation of even less than 0.2 dB/m in the wavelength range of 1.41 µm to 1.55 µm [18]. At the same time, the SM PF POFs have the potential for improved thermal stability compared to their PMMA counterparts [19].
This whole chapter provides a comprehensive overview on current POF-based sensing principles and SHM technologies, highlighting their diverse applications in civil engineering structures. In the application-related context, close attention is paid to the development of smart sensor-based geotextiles and geogrids. Such geosynthetics-integrated distributed POF sensors have proven to be a promising solution for two- or even tree-dimensional monitoring of critical high mechanical deformations in both geotechnical and masonry structures. Moreover, geosynthetics in the form of nonwoven geotextiles as well as polymer-based geogrids used as carrier materials for POF sensors enable optimized load transfer from the monitored structure to the measuring fiber without losing their original functionality. In other words, smart geosynthetics provide a cost-efficient dual solution for, on the one hand, well-established increase of structure stability and decrease of erosion effects, on the other hand, early-warning and detection capabilities in the prevention and elimination of potential hazards and lasting damages.
Increasing traffic volume on the one hand and ageing infrastructure on the other hand have created many new challenges for maintenance and structural health monitoring of roads and bridges. In the past, many bridges and road structures have been neglected, often resulting in traffic congestion, road closure, and increased repair costs.
This research is concerned with the development of a system to improve the challenge of maintenance and early detection of damage, particularly moisture penetration and corrosion of steel reinforced concrete components. The objective is to develop a method that will also work after 30 years and longer. Many new IoT solutions are equipped with internal energy storage elements (accumulators or batteries) which are inappropriate here, since most relevant signs of concrete degradation occur after decades, where the functioning of such elements are more than questionable. The presented technology approach uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) and enables connectivity to sensors. It offers the advantage of an passive, completely independent energy supply without any energy storage components.
Since the system should be permanently embedded in concrete, it is crucial to develop a long-term stable device which is adapted to the environmental influences of the structure, e.g., long-term resistance in very alkaline environment of pH 13. In numerous experiments, the robustness of the system was tested and evaluated. Various tests with encapsulations to protect the electronics were performed, and for long-term validation different concrete specimens were instrumented with RFID-sensor-systems. Their operating time is now around two years and investigations for signs of fatigue and damage to the encapsulation and the electronics are ongoing.
Ti-Al-Nb based intermetallic layers of sufficient quality and thickness were obtained by non-vacuum electron beam cladding on the surfaces of Ti workpieces. Optical microscopy and X-ray tomography did not reveal any dramatical defects in the structure of cladded layers. X-ray diffraction as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy were applied to thoroughly investigate the structure and phase composition of coatings. It was found that non-equilibrium cooling conditions of coatings provided by fast removal of heat to untreated Ti substrate after the electron beam cladding was terminated induced the proceeding of metastable phase transformations. For example, γ-phase formation was suppressed in these coatings. In coatings with 8 and 20 at.% Nb (46 and 43% Al respectively) along with ordered with α2, formation of disordered solution of the alloying elements in α-Ti took place. In high-Nb alloys β(B2) phase has undergone the diffusionless transformation to ω’, which is the intermediate phase in β → ω and the coating with the maximum Nb content characterized by appearance of γ1 as a main phase. ω-phase had negative influence to hardness and wear resistance of coatings, however, generally this paremeter increased in 1.3–1.75 times compared to cp-Ti. The high temperature creep and oxidation properties decreased proportionally with increasing Nb and decreasing Al content in the cladded layers.
THz and mid IR spectroscopy of high-molecular PE (HMW) and ultra high-molecular PE (UHMW) reveals modifications of the molecular structure. Characteristic absorption bands are changed if the two materials are exposed by γ-Co60 radiation up to 600 kGy and subsequently stored at an annealing temperature of 398 K until for 729 days. UHMW-PE and HMW-PE behave differently during the ageing process because of their molecular weight and inherent structure distinctions. The spectroscopic data offer characteristic absorption bands, which have been used to describe the complete ageing process in more detail. For instance, the integral absorption in the B1u THz-region can be used to describe quantitatively the reduction of crystallinity. The formation of trans vinylene unsaturation and the decay of vinyl during ageing can be observed in detail in the mid IR range.

Ammonium nitrate (AN) prills are commonly used as an ingredient in industrial explosives and in fertilisers. Conventional techniques (such as BET or mercury intrusion porosimetry) can measure the open porosity and specific surface area of AN prill, but the closed porosity is not obtainable. This work was focused on evaluating X-ray computed tomography (XCT) as a non-destructive technique for the assessment of porosity in AN prills. An advanced data processing workflow was developed so that the segmentation and quantification of the CT data could be performed on the entire 3D volume, yet allowing the measurements (e.g.; volume, area, shape factor…) to be extracted for each individual phase (prill, open porosity, closed porosity) of each individual prill, in order to obtain statistically relevant data. Clear morphological and structural differences were seen and quantified between fertiliser and explosive products. Overall, CT can provide a very wide range of parameters that are not accessible to other techniques, destructive or non-destructive, and thus offers new insights and complementary information.

This presentation offers a holistic view on the assessment of reliability of NDT including the intrinsic reliability (typically expressed in terms of probability of detection (POD) curves), application, human and organisational factors. In addition to POD, advanced methods such as multiparameter POD, volume POD and POD for combined data are presented. Human and organisational factors in NDT require a systematic approach, i.e. it is not just the individual that determines how the inspections are carried out but also the interactions of individuals with the technology, team, organisation and the extra-organisational environment. Lessons learned from the literature as well as from own studies are presented.
The aim of this presentation is twofold: first, to present the field of psychology including its research methods and, second, to show on an example how psychology can be used in material research. The example is of the study of human factors in non-destructive testing (NDT), in which the author has more than 10 years of experience. The conclusion is that psychological methods can be used to identify human-related problems during different tasks and to generate mitigation strategies that can be used to decrease human error and enhance safety.
The fourth industrial revolution (also known as “Industry 4.0”) promises to relieve people from manual and physical work by developing cyber-physical systems and smart automation and thereby achieving a more efficient, reliable and safe performance. This will change people’s work from being operators of the system into becoming strategical decision makers and flexible problem solvers. This shift will require a new division of work between people and technical systems, a new division of responsibilities and new ways of interacting with technology, which in turn will pose new demands on people. People will require different physical and cognitive capabilities, different competencies and new strategies to cope with the upcoming challenges. The focus of Industry 4.0 is therefore on designing systems with human in the centre: systems that will extend people’s capabilities, that will allow collaborative work and take advantage of performances in which either people or technology excel. This presentation will focus on the benefits of consideration of human-machine interaction in the context of industry 4.0.
A powerful tool to understand, demonstrate and explain the limits of the pulsed technique in terms of detectability and localizability of AM keyhole pores has been assessed by comparing the active thermographic approach (both experimental and FEM simulations) to Computed Tomography results;
✓ µCT results demonstrate that the intended defect geometry is not achieved; indeed a network of voids (microdefects consisting of small sharp-edged hollows with a complicated, almost fractal, inner surface) was found;
✓ both Exp-PT and FEM results explains clearly why no indication of defect related to the thermal contrasts could be found during the investigation of an uncoated surface. However, the application of further data evaluations focusing on the thermal behavior and emissivity evaluation (PPT post data processing) enable the detection of some defects;
✓ coating facilitates a closer inspection of inner defects, but inhomogeneities of the coating could impair the spatial resolution and lead to the emergence of hotspots (the FEM simulation reached its limit with this extreme geometry where a 25 µm thin disc is considered at a 1 cm thick specimen in millisecond time resolution);
✓ both Exp-PT and FEM results allow the conclusion that very short pulses of 200 ms or shorter should be sufficient to detect these defects below, but near the surface; besides a short duration of the thermal phenomenon it should be emphasized, about 0.04 s (high frame rate camera);
Influence of the scanning strategy on the residual stress state in IN718 additive manufactured parts
(2020)
Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is an additive manufacturing technique enabling the design of complex geometries that are unrivalled by conventional production technologies. Nevertheless, L-PBF process is known to induce a high amount of residual stresses (RS) due to the high temperature gradients present during powder melting by laser. High tensile residual stresses are to be found the edges whereas the bulk material shows balancing compressive RS. Literature shows that the RS is highly sensitive to the process parameters. In particular, this study presents the characterization of the RS state in two L-PBF parts produced with a rastering scan vector that undergoes 90° or 67° rotation between subsequent layers.
To date, there are only very few technologies available for the conversion of low temperature waste heat to electricity. More than a century ago, thermomagnetic generators were proposed, which are based on a change of magnetization with temperature, switching a magnetic flux, which according to Faraday’s law induces a voltage. In this talk, we first describe the principle of thermomagnetic generators. Then we focus on the impact of topology of the magnetic circuit within thermomagnetic generators. We demonstrate that the key operational parameters strongly depend on the genus, i.e. the number of holes within the magnetic circuit. A pretzel-like topology of the magnetic circuit with genus =3 improves the performance of thermomagnetic generators by orders of magnitude. We will show that this technique is on its way to becoming competitive with thermoelectrics for energy harvesting near room temperature.
Thermomagnetic materials are a new type of magnetic energy materials, which enable the conversion of low temperature waste heat to electricity by three routes: Thermomagnetic motors, generators and microsystems. Taking our recent work on thermomagnetic generators as a starting point, in this talk we analyse the material requirements for a more energy and economic efficient conversion. We will describe the influence of magnetisation change and heat capacity on thermodynamic efficiency, as well as the consequences of thermal conductivity on power density. Our analysis will allow selecting the best thermomagnetic materials in Ashby plots and illustrate the substantial different properties compared to magnetocaloric materials. Functional materials for energy conversion are important technology drivers needed for the implementation of low carbon energy. Therefore, researchers commonly focus on improving the intrinsic properties of a functional material. However, for applications, the extrinsic properties are at least as important as the intrinsic ones. Consequently, it is important to investigate and understand the external and internal structure of semi-finished products and especially defect dependent properties. The extrinsic properties may change during application and the life cycle of the material as well as through processing and molding steps. Our studies show how X-ray tomographic (XCT) investigations can contribute to structure investigations in composites and massive samples using the example of magnetic materials for energy conversion.

In this ongoing research project, we study the influence of moisture damage on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in different floor constructions. For this purpose, a measurement setup with interchangeable layers is developed to vary the screed material (cement or anhydrite) and insulation material (glass wool, perlite, expanded and extruded polystyrene), as well as the respective layer thickness. The evaluation of the 2 GHz common-offset radar measurements is focused on the extraction of distinctive signal features that can be used to classify the underlying case of damage without any further information about the hidden materials or layer thicknesses. In the collected dataset, we analyze the horizontal distribution of A-scan features in corresponding B-scans to detect water in the insulation layer. Furthermore, possible combinations of these features are investigated with the use of multivariate data analysis and machine learning (logistic regression) in order to evaluate the mutual dependencies. In this study, the combination of an amplitude- and frequency-based feature achieved an accuracy of 93.2 % and performed best to detect a damage in floor insulations.

We have arrived in the data age. But why is it so difficult for the NDT community to achieve real breakthroughs with data-driven science? In this seminar, we will take a brief look at the evolution of mainstream data science to understand why the most exciting times are perhaps just ahead. We will give an overview of our activities in the junior research group 8.K which are aimed at enabling the next generation of data science methods in NDT. The seminar addresses the two main work fields of our group: semantic data management and the handling of limited data resources.
The first field addresses the problem that a uniform representation of our data is not yet available. However, knowledge creation in data science - whose main contribution lies in the analysis of distributed resources - requires common data access based on a collective understanding. To achieve this, we present an ontology-based approach. Ontologies are already the core of many intelligent systems such as building information models or research databases. We summarize some of the basic principles of this technology and describe our approach to create an NDT ontology.
The second field ties in with the first and addresses the application of data-based methods in engineering practice. Especially in the field of non-destructive testing many successful applications have been published. In most cases, however, the creation of referenced data is extremely expensive and therefore much sparser than in other research areas. As a result, the available data may cover only one scenario, so that common benchmarks often do not reflect the actual performance of the model in practical applications. Estimates that quantify the transferability from one scenario to another are not only necessary to overcome this challenge - they also prove to be a powerful tool for the strategic expansion of what we consider knowledge.
Data-driven research is considered the new paradigm in science. In this field, data is the new resource from which knowledge is extracted that is too complex for traditional methods. Several factors such as national funding and advances in information technology, are driving the development. In particular, the creation of databases and the analysis of data with artifical intelligence are playing an important role in establishing the new paradigm. However, there are numerous challenges that must be overcome to realize the full potential of data-driven methods. This talk sets the stage for the upcoming workshop by reviewing some of the historical developments and the current state of data-driven science in NDT and materials science.
Many PhD students are interested in applying machine learning, AI, data science, etc., and there are many good reasons for this. However, there is a disconnect between mainstream data science and materials science, for example, when it comes to the sheer size of the data. This talk will highlight some of the unique challenges in materials informatics and present some interesting approaches to overcome them. Although the field is large, this talk will focus on cases that have some practical relevance to PhD students at BAM.
Modern air-liners and wind turbine rotor blades are made up primarily of fiber reinforced plastics. Failure of these materials heavily impairs the serviceability and the operational safety. Consequently, knowledge of the failure behavior under static and cyclic loads is of great interest to estimate the operational strength and to compare the performance of different materials. Ideally, the damage evolution under operational load is determined with in-situ non-destructive testing techniques. Here, we report in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging of tensile stress induced cracks in carbon fiber reinforced plastics due to inter-fiber failure. An inhouse designed compact tensile testing machine with a load range up to 15 kN was integrated into the beamline. Since conventional radiographs do not reveal sufficient contrast to distinguish cracks due to inter-fiber failure and micro cracking from fiber bundles, the Diffraction Enhanced Imaging (DEI) technique is applied in order to separate primary and scattered (refracted) radiation by means of an analyzer crystal. This technique allows fast measurements over large fields-of-view and is ideal for in-situ investigations.
The knowledge of the cure situation during the production process of
thermosetting material is of enormous importance.
• Mid- and near- infrared (IR) spectroscopy in attenuated total
reflectance (ATR) geometry are promising techniques for curing
studies.
• An IR/THz sensor system was developed to investigate its suitability
for future online monitoring of curing processes in the production line.
In the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) in civil engineering, a large number of measurement data are collected. Although they serve as a basis for scientific analyses, there is still no uniform representation of the data. An analysis of various distributed data sets across different test objects is therefore only possible with high manual effort.
We present a system architecture for an integrated data management of distributed data sets based on Semantic Web technologies. The approach is essentially based on a mathematical model - the so-called ontology - which represents the knowledge of our domain NDT. The ontology developed by us is linked to data sources and thus describes the semantic meaning of the data. Furthermore, the ontology acts as a central concept for database access. Non-domain data sources can be easily integrated by linking them to the NDT construction ontology and are directly available for generic use in the sense of digitization. Based on an extensive literature research, we outline the possibilities that this offers for NDT in civil engineering, such as computer-aided sorting, analysis, recognition and explanation of relationships (explainable AI) for several million measurement data.
The expected benefits of this approach of knowledge representation and data access for the NDT community are an expansion of knowledge through data exchange in research (interoperability), the scientific exploitation of large existing data sources with data-based methods (such as image recognition, measurement uncertainty calculations, factor analysis, material characterization) and finally a simplified exchange of NDT data with engineering models and thus with the construction industry.
Ontologies are already the core of numerous intelligent systems such as building information modeling or research databases. This contribution gives an overview of the range of tools we are currently creating to communicate with them.
New possibilities for concrete analysis 4.0 with the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)
(2020)
In civil engineering the damage assessment of concrete infrastructures is an important task to monitor and ensure the estimated life-time. The aging of concrete is caused by different damage processes like the chloride induced pitting corrosion of the reinforcement. The penetration depth and the concentration of harmful species are crucial factors in the damage assessment. As a highly cost and time-consuming standard procedure, the analysis of concrete drill cores or drilling by wet-chemistry is widely used. This method provides element concentration to the total mass as aggregates and binder are homogenized. In order to provide a method that is capable to detect the element concentration regarding the cement content only, the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) will be presented. The LIBS method uses a focused pulsed laser on the sample surface to ablate material. The high-power density and the laser-material interaction causes a laser-induced plasma that emits elemental and molecular line emission due to energy transition of the excited species in the plasma during the cooling phase.
As each element provides element-specific line emission, it is in principle possible to detect any element on the periodic table (spectroscopic fingerprint) with one laser shot. In combination with a translation stage the sample under investigation can be spatially resolved using a scan raster with a resolution up to 100 µm (element mapping). Due to the high spatial resolution, the element distribution and the heterogeneity of the concrete can be evaluated. By using chemometrics the non-relevant aggregates can be excluded from the data set and the element concentration can be quantified and referred to a specific solid phase like the binding matrix (cement) only. In order to analyze transport processes like diffusion and migration the twodimensional element distributions can provide deep insight into the transport through the pore space and local enrichments of elements. As LIBS is a multi-elemental method it is also possible to compare the ingress and transport process of different elements like Cl, Na, K, S, C, and Li simultaneously and evaluate cross-correlations between the different ions. Furthermore, the element mapping allows to visualize the transport along cracks. This work will show the state of the art in terms of hardware and software for an automated LIBS system as well as different application for a concrete analysis 4.0. Focus will be the application of LIBS for a fast concrete analysis.
Prediction of dynamic effects of reinforced concrete structures under impact loading is a technical challenge. This is a consequence of the great variability of the physical properties resulting from the wide adaptability of reinforced concrete and a consequence of the wide range of impact loading. Experiments and numerical investigations are normally used on a small scale to address the problem. In this paper, impact tests on reinforced conrete plates with the lateral dimensions of 1.5 m x 1.5 m and a thickness of 30 cm are presented. In bending reinforcement, besides the velocity two properties are varied, the diameter and the spatial distribution of the rebars. Experiments are performed at the Otto-Mohr-Laboratory of the Institute of Concrete Structures of the Technische Universit¨at Dresden. Due to the accelerated fall of the impactor the velocity ranges between 20 and 70 m/s. In addition to the measured quantities such as bearing forces, accelerations are also measured at 4 different positions on and under the plate, as well as the deflection at several positions. The measured data are used for the analysis of the damage form and the numerical examinations with the program Ansys Autodyn and the material model after Drucker-Prager. Numerical investigations support the tests, with detailed analysis of individual effects. These numerical computations and the planar tomographic investigations were carried out at BAM in Berlin. With the help of planar tomographic evaluation, the damaged structure is made visible and compared with the numerical results. Influences of the bending reinforcement are explained on the basis of damage evaluation in the local area and on selected measured values. In addition to the test evaluation, the tomographic and numerical methods are presented.

Intensified Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) damage has occurred on German roadways in recent years, leading to requirements for compulsory pre-construction investigation of aggregate alkali sensitivity using concrete tests with external alkali supply. However, since these tests are time-consuming and cost-intensive, there is interest in replacing them with a solubility test on pure aggregate in 0.1 M KOH solution at 80°C with a defined NaCl content (1wt.-%). In this context, the influence of aggregate pore structure on SiO2 and Al2O3 solubility was investigated in this project. This paper compares the results of porosity studies with X-ray Computed Tomography (3D-CT) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method on individual quarried and river gravel granules of both rhyolite and greywacke. For visualization and quantification of both externally accessible and fully enclosed surfaces of granules using X-ray 3D-CT, special software tools were developed. The results demonstrated that the river gravel granules had significantly larger externally accessible surfaces than the quarried granules. BET measurements on individual stones showed, as expected, that measured surfaces were about three orders of magnitude larger than those from the X-ray 3D-CT analyses due to the higher spatial resolution of BET. There was no apparent correlation between the X-ray 3D-CT and BET surface areas. Mercury porosimetry measurements indicate that this may be due to the presence of significant porosity below the spatial resolution of the X-ray 3D-CT. A comparison of SiO2 and Al2O3 solubility measurements with the X-ray 3D-CT and BET surface area data resulted only in weak, inconclusive correlations, indicating the need for further experimental investigation.
Fluorides are well-known as wood preservatives. One of the limitations of fluoride-based wood preservatives is their high leachability. Alternative to current fluoride salts such as NaF used in wood protection are low water-soluble fluorides. However, impregnation of low water-soluble fluorides into wood poses a challenge. To address this challenge, low water-soluble fluorides like calcium fluoride (CaF2) and magnesium fluoride (MgF2) were synthesized as nanoparticles via the fluorolytic sol−gel synthesis and then impregnated into wood specimens. In this study, the toxicity of nano metal fluorides was assessed by termite mortality, mass loss and visual analysis of treated specimens after eight weeks of exposure to termites, Coptotermes formosanus. Nano metal fluorides with sol concentrations of 0.5 M and higher were found to be effective against termites resulting in 100% termite mortality and significantly inhibited termite feeding. Among the formulations tested, the least damage was found for specimens treated with combinations of CaF2 and MgF2 with an average mass loss less than 1% and visual rating of “1”. These results demonstrate the efficacy of low water-soluble nano metal fluorides to protect wood from termite attack.
Precise knowledge about the distribution of air pollutants is necessary to develop plausible occupational health measures. Combinatory systems, consisting of mobile robots and stationary sensors, can be effective solutions for the coverage of large measurement areas. However, further research is needed to fully understand their performance in comparison to traditional sensing strategies. Therefore, multiple sensor networks layouts will be set up in a simulation environment as well as in real industrial environments. Models for distribution mapping will be developed and evaluated to investigate the performance and opportunities of hybrid-mobility sensor networks for the task of distribution mapping.

Novel Technique for On-Line Monitoring of the Curing Process of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites
(2020)
A specially designed experimental set up has been integrated into a commercially available FT IR Spectrometer for ATR experiments on Epoxy Systems. Representative data of far infrared spectra measured during the curing process at different temperatures of an epoxy system will be presented in dependency of the curing situation. The experiments and the selected set up are discussed to demonstrate its potential for future monitoring and ageing control applications during a manufacturing process of polymer composites.
Integration of fibre reinforcement in high-performance cementitious materials has become widely applied in many fields of construction. One of the most investigated advantages of steel fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) is the deceleration of crack growth and hence it’s improved sustainability due to e.g. decrease of permeability of concrete by aggressive substances. Additional benefits are associated with the structural properties of FRC, where fibres can significantly increase the ductility and the tensile strength of concrete. In some applications, such as tunnel linings or industrial slabs, it is even possible to entirely replace the conventional reinforcement, leading to significant logistical and environmental benefits. Fibre reinforcement can, however, have critical disadvantages and even hinder the performance of concrete, since it can induce an anisotropic material behaviour of the mixture if the fibres are not appropriately oriented. For a safe use of FRC in the future, reliable non-destructive methods need to be identified to assess the fibres’ orientation in hardened concrete. In this study, ultrasonic material testing, electrical impedance testing, and X-ray computer tomography have been investigated for this purpose using specially produced samples with biased or random fibre orientations. This paper demonstrates the capabilities of each of these NDT techniques for fibre orientation measurements and draws conclusions based on these results about the most promising areas for future research and development using these techniques.
Etalon effects in THz transmittance spectra, either taken in time-domain or frequency-domain, often hamper or even hinder the interpretation of film properties. In this paper we discuss the transferability and applicability of spectroscopic methods usually employed in the near and mid infrared spectral range and exemplarily present the application field.
Machine learning based multi-sensor fusion for the nondestructive testing of corrosion in concrete
(2020)
Half-cell potential mapping (HP) is the most popular non-destructive testing method (NDT) for locating corrosion damage in concrete. It is generally accepted that HP is susceptible to environmental factors caused by salt-related deterioration, such as different moisture and chloride gradients. Additional NDT methods are able to identify distinctive areas but are not yet used to estimate more accurate test results. We present a Supervised Machine Learning (SML) based approach to data fusion of seven different signal features to obtain higher quality information. SMLs are methods that explore (or learn) relationships between different (sensor) data from predefined data labels. To obtain a representative, labelled data set we conducted a comprehensive experiment simulating the deterioration cycle of a chloride exposed device in the laboratory. Our data set consists of 18 measurement campaigns, each containing HP, Ground Penetrating- Radar, Microwave Moisture and Wenner resistivity data. We compare the performance of different ML approaches. Many outperform the best single method, HP. We describe the intrinsic challenges posed by a data-driven approach in NDT and show how future work can help overcome them.

Micromechanical response of multi-phase Al-alloy matrix composites under uniaxial compression
(2020)
Aluminum alloys are extensively used in the automotive industry. Particularly, squeeze casting production of Al-Si alloys is employed in the conception of metal matrix composites (MMC) for combustion engines. Such materials are of a high interest since they allow combining improved mechanical properties and reduced weight and hence improve efficiency. Being a multiphase material, most MMCs show complex micromechanical behavior under different load conditions. In this work we investigated the micromechanical behavior of two MMCs, both consisting of a near-eutectic cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy, one reinforced with 15%vol. Al2O3 short fibers and the other with 7%vol. Al2O3 short fibers + 15%vol. SiC particles. Both MMCs have complex 3D microstructure consisting of four and five phases: Al-alloy matrix, eutectic Si, intermetallics, Al2O3 fibers and SiC particles.
The in-situ neutron diffraction compression experiments were carried out on the Stress-Spec beamline and disclosed the evolution of internal phase-specific stresses in both composites. In combination with the damage mechanism revealed by synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (SXCT) on plastically pre-strained samples, this allowed understanding the role of every composite’s phase in the stress partitioning mechanism. Finally, based on the Maxwell scheme, a micromechanical model was utilized. The model perfectly rationalizes the experimental data and predicts the evolution of principal stresses in each phase.
Online quality control of security relevant parts manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) remains to be a challenge due to the highly complex process conditions. Furthermore, the influence of characteristic scan strategy parameters is not sufficiently clarified yet due to the commonly used method of single-track investigations. In this contribution, this topic is addressed by observing large 316L volume sections using in-situ melt pool monitoring by thermography in high temporal and spatial resolution. In detail, the influence of the scan angle on the melt pool geometry is investigated on. Characteristic melt pool features are extracted from the image data and analyzed using statistical methods data for altering scan angles. The results show significant changes in the melt pool dimensions and temperature distribution over the scan angle rotation. A first explanation approach is presented that connects the observed changes to phenomena of beam attenuation by metal vapor plume.
Etalon features in transmittance spectra of films arise due to the coherent superposition of waves caused by reflections multiple times at the inner film boundaries. The fringe maxima occur at i𝜆 = 2nd cos 𝜑 with i - being an integer, 𝜆 - the wavelength, d - the film thickness, 𝜑 - the angle of incidence in respect to the film normal and n - the refractive index of the film. It is obvious that such features can hinder the interpretation of absorption bands when fringe amplitude and period are in the same range as the expected bands.
This poster discusses the suitability of two optical methods for the THz spectral range applied to Fourier Transform Spectroscopy.
