The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) is a semi-analytical method that showed promising results in modelling of guided ultrasonic waves. Efficiency and a low computational cost of the method are achieved by the discretisation of the boundary of a computational domain only, whereas for the domain itself the analytical solution is used. By means of the SBFEM different types of defects, e.g. fatigue cracks, pores, delamination, corrosion, integrated into a structure consisting of anisotropic and isotropic materials can be modelled.
In this contribution, the SBFEM is used to analyse the propagation of guided waves in a structure consisting of an isotropic metal bonded to anisotropic carbon fibre reinforced material. The method allowed to identify appropriate wave types (modes) and to analyse their interaction with different defects. Obtained results will be used to develop a structural health monitoring system for composite pressure vessels used in automotive industry.
Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing for Monitoring and Testing of Industrial and Civil Infrastructures
(2018)
Fibre optic sensors enable the gathering of sensory information in environments where conventional sensors fail or simply can not be utilised. Their small size enables their use in confined spaces as well as their embedding or integration in components, structures or composite materials while offering, depending on the approach, high sensitivity, very high spatial resolution and, especially, the possibility to detect or measure physical quantities in a distributed way, meaning spatially continuous sensing over very long distances.
Those distributed fibre optic sensors (DFOS) provide access to sensing information from different locations along the sensing fibre without the need for technologically challenging multiplexing of many point sensors and the subsequent sensor data fusion. In this way, DFOS are excellently suited as smart sensors for monitoring or testing purposes as the spatially distributed sensing data make available spatially resolved measurand profiles without a gap. Furthermore, the possible embedding or integration of DFOS could facilitate the development of smart structures or smart components. In particular distributed vibration sensing (DVS) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) are also ideally suited for condition monitoring of machinery, industrial installations or extensive infrastructure, also, on-line real-time assembly or component testing in production lines, e.g. for quality control, is possible.
In this talk, we will shortly outline the underlying principles of some fibre optic sensing approaches, explain their fundamental differences in mode of operation and performance, and discuss their applicability and limitations. Moreover, we will report on a subset of current and previous applied research projects at BAM, investigating different areas of use for distributed fibre optic sensors in particular.
Microstructural changes in porous cordierite for diesel particulate filter applications caused by machining were characterized using microtensile testing and X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Young’s modulus was determined on ~215-380 m thick machined samples by digital image correlation. Results show a decrease of Young’s modulus due to machining of the thin samples. Explanation of this phenomenon was provided by XCT: the presence of debris due to machining and the variation of porosity due to removal of the outer layers were quantified and correlated with the introduction of further microcracking.
Additive Manufacturing (AM) enables the unique capability of building highly complex parts with integrated functional design. One particular advantageous design feature is known as lattice structures, which provide opportunities for innovative applications in the high-temperature regime of gas turbines. Generally, manufacturing of these structures is already known to be achievable with AM, however proof of structural integrity and geometrical accuracy is not yet reliably established.
In this investigation, a systematic design-follows-complexity approach is utilized to pursue a holistic assessment of Ni based high temperature lattice. As the major element of lattice structures, single struts of different build orientations are investigated at first. This approach includes the application of Computed Tomography (CT), which allows for a non destructive assessment of quality criteria such as porosity and inner geometries as well as the parts’ metrology at a micrometre scale. The applied laboratory CT benefits from high magnification factors around 100 and voxel sizes down to a thousandth of the specimens’ diameter.
Preliminary results show a correlation between the inclination angle and the struts’ quality, which indicate a dependency of geometrical accuracy and structural properties to the AM process setup. Consequently, lattice structures require the development of reliable manufacturing to produce dependable characteristics.
While there is large potential for use of lattice structures in gas turbine and high temperature applications, the results indicate the strong need for an increased understanding of manufacturing and design as well as of the validation methods for these complex lattice structures.
The layer-by-layer Additive Manufacturing (AM) by means of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) offers many prospects regarding the design of a part used in aeroplane components and gas turbines. However, structural deviations from the nominal morphology are unavoidable. The cooling of the finished part leads to shrinkage and a high surface roughness is induced by attached powder particles affecting the part volume too.
The integrity and load-bearing capacity of a SLM produced lattice structure has been investigated by means of in-situ X-ray computed tomography during compression. The lattice structure was compressed by 10 % in height with an applied maximum force of 5 kN. Additionally, a single strut has been investigated ex-situ as a component of the lattice structure. With the higher resolution achieved on the single strut, the pore distribution (size and location) as well as the surface roughness were assessed. The particle and pore size distribution of the raw powder have been investigated, too. One of the main results coming from the in-situ analysis was that the nodes were identified as the weakest points in the lattice structure.
This work presents a first attempt to use ionic liquids as a new coating for planar coulometric sensors. These sensors are used for the measurement of trace humidity in various gases. Usually, the coating of the sensors is tetraphosphorus decaoxide and its hydrolysis products. Instead, a hygroscopic ionic liquid was used as sensor coating in this work. Generated frost point temperatures tf in the gas ranged from -80 °C to -30 °C, which is equivalent to vapour mole fractions xv from 0.5 μmol·mol-1 to 376 μmol·mol-1. In addition to the coulometric sensors, the generated humidity is determined by a precision dew point hygrometer as reference. First results show that it is possible to measure humidity withionic liquid based coulometric sensors.
Die Arbeiten wurden durchgeführt im Rahmen des Europäischen Projektes “Whole Life Rail Axle Assessment and Improvement Using Ultrasonic Phased array and Corrosion Inspection Systems“ (RAAI).

In flash thermography, the temperature transient is strongly influenced by the temporal shape of the heating pulse for samples with high thermal diffusivity or very thin samples. Here, we present a closed phenomenological approximation of the temporal shape of pulses of Xe-flash lamps. It is a non-stitched solution, has a simple Laplace transform and is suitable for different lamps and energy settings. It is demonstrated that simulated temperature transients, based on this approximation, are well consistent with experimental data.
Thermoelectric properties of doubly substituted La0.95Sr0.05Co1-xCrxO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) ceramics
(2018)
Dense La0.95Sr0.05Co1-xCrxO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction and conventional sintering. Room-temperature crystal structure and microstructure were investigated and the thermoelectric properties were measured in the temperature range 323 K – 1020 K. All compositions are single phase with rhombohedral structure, and the lattice parameter of La0.95Sr0.05Co1-xCrxO3 increases with increasing Cr content.
La0.95Sr0.05Co1-xCrxO3 is a p-type small polaron conductor. The charge carrier concentration is determined by both substitution of La3+ with Sr2+ and thermally-activated charge disproportionation of Co3+ and / or Cr3+. Above 550 K, the substitution of Co with Cr increases the Seebeck coefficient and reduces the electrical conductivity. Below 550 K, the trend of Seebeck coefficient with Cr content is not clear due to the thermally activated charge disproportionation. At low temperature, the electrical conductivity shows a minimum with Cr content of x = 0.4, as a result of trapped polarons in the Cr sites. By substituting Co with Cr, the power factor below 800 K is reduced and that above 800 K is improved.
The thermal conductivity is effectively reduced by doping Cr. The highest ZT value of 0.053 at 373 K is achieved for x = 0, but it decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. Substitution of Co with Cr can effectively improve the ZT values at high temperatures. In the temperature range 700 K – 1000 K, ZT increases with increasing Cr content, the highest being 0.04 at 1000 K for the composition with x = 0.5, more than 4 times the value of the La0.95Sr0.05CoO3 compound.
Active thermography with flash and halogen light excitation is used as a method for non-destructive testing of 3D-printed polymer components. Test specimens with artificial defects have been generated, using laser sintering and fused layer modeling. These test specimens have been investigated in different measurement configurations with both excitation methods. Afterwards, the different measurement conditions were compared regarding their capability to detect the defects. Furthermore, advanced analysis methods are used, to fully exploit the capabilities of these techniques.

Influence of the real energy input on the sensitivity of thermographic testing in case of GFRP
(2018)
Thermographic testing (TT) is an upcoming nondestructive method, which requires no contact at all to the specimen and can be applied on larger areas simultaneously. The measurement concept is based on the production of a thermal imbalance at the surface of the object under test. When the surface of this object is heated by an external source for a certain time, the surface temperature drops subsequently, influenced by inner defects of the sample. This leads to thermal contrasts at the surface. It is crucial that those contrasts are large enough to be detectable above the noise level. In a first approximation, the observed temperature contrast at a defect is proportional to the energy which was really introduced into the specimen during the heating period. However, the real energy input in a TT experiment is almost always unknown due to distinct parameters of the experimental setup or the material investigated. Typically, only the power consumption of the heating sources is reported, sometimes combined with the distance to the specimen surface.
This contribution describes the thermographic inspection of a rear side thickness variation from 1 to 2 cm at GFRP. This could represent a rear side adhesive bond i.e. in a wind turbine rotor blade. The front side heating was realized by usual halogen lamps with variable radiation power. The detected temperature contrast at the front side will be related to the different energy inputs determined by means of a simple analytical model applied to the experimental data. Additionally, the experimental data are compared with results of FEM simulations performed by COMSOL Multiphysics.
The results clearly demonstrate the key role of the real energy input in a real TT setup, if detection limits have to be evaluated.
Systematic errors in the evaluation of uncorrected data from thermographic lock-in measurements
(2018)
Lock-in thermography (LT) is based on the correct evaluation of phase differences between the temperature oscillations at different surface regions of the object under test during periodic heating. Since the usual heating procedures contain a DC component, the actual heating pattern achieved is not harmonic. This causes systematic deviations when phase differences are determined by means of harmonic analysis, e.g. with FFT analysis. The resulting errors depend clearly on the ratio between DC and AC amplitude, which is demonstrated at simulated and experimentally recorded temperature transients. Further experimental LT data obtained by different oscillating energy inputs showed a variety of possible shapes of transients with different DC components.
Composite pressure vessels consist of an internal liner (Steel, aluminum, or plastic) which stores the liquid or gas and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) which serves as pressure resistance. These vessels comprise some advantages compared with conventional vessels made of steel or aluminum and their application grew strongly over the last decade. The reason for this trend is the tremendous weight saving.
However, the long-time behavior for filling and discharging cycles and the creep strength of composite vessels is not fully understood. Therefore, BAM started an internal project to investigate degradation of these material systems. Normally, high-frequency eddy current testing (HF-ET, f > 10 MHz) is deployed for CFRP due to the low conductivity of the fibers, which is in the order of 0.01 MS/s, and the capacitive coupling between them. Nevertheless, in some cases conventional ET can be applied.
Some first results using conventional ET for detecting leakages in the internal liners are already presented. This contribution gives an update of our investigation using both conventional and high-frequency ET. Therefore, we developed an ET equipment based on a vector network analyzer using frequencies between 300 kHz and 2 GHz. The focus concerns the study of the aging effects.
Air-coupled ultrasonic testing (ACUT) has experienced rapid growth within the last years. It is especially well suited to inspection of lightweight structures consisting of composite materials and adhesive joints. Uniform coupling and easy maintenance are its advantages compared to contact technique. However, the impedance mismatch between the transducer and air poses a major challenge to the development of ACUT transducers. Commercially available air-coupled transducers consist of a piezocomposite material and matching layers. Their fabrication is difficult in handling and their signal-to-noise ratio sometimes not sufficient for various testing requirements. However, there are several innovative approaches using other materials and other physical principles to transmit and receive an ultrasonic pulse. We present a review of the latest advances in research on air-coupled transducers for non-destructive testing, including previously unpublished results. We recognize two major directions as most promising: ferroelectrets and thermoacoustic transducers. Ferroelectrets are charged cellular polymers exhibiting piezoelectric properties. Their small acoustic impedance is matched to air better than matching layers applied in conventional air-coupled transducers. Applying bias voltage to a ferroelectret receiver is the latest development in this field, which increased the received signal by 12 to 15 dB. Thermoacoustic transducers use heat to initiate an ultrasonic wave, acting as transmitters. The working principle is known from nature as thunder and lightning: thermal energy of an electrically heated material, which can also be air, is converted into acoustic energy. Some thermoacoustic transmitters consist of a conductive layer with a thickness in the nanometer range deposited on a solid substrate. Another possibility is to use an electric spark. For the first time, measurements of the sound field of an electric spark up to 500 kHz were performed. Thermoacoustic transducers enable excitation of extremely broadband pulses while producing high pressure levels, which opens new possibilities for advanced signal processing.
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction is a powerful non-destructive technique for the analysis of the material stress-state. High cooling rates and heterogeneous temperature distributions during additive manufacturing lead to high residual stresses. These high residual stresses play a crucial role in the ability to achieve complex geometries with accuracy since they can promote distortion of parts during manufacturing. Furthermore, residual stresses are critical for the mechanical performance of parts in terms of durability and safety.
In the present study, Ti-6Al-4V bridge-like specimens were manufactured additively by selective laser melting (SLM) under different laser scanning speed conditions in order to compare the effect of process energy density on the residual stress state. Subsurface residual stress analysis was conducted by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction in energy dispersive mode for three conditions: as-built on base plate, released from base plate, and after heat treatment on the base plate. The quantitative residual stress characterization shows a correlation with the qualitative bridge curvature method. Computed tomography (CT) was carried out to ensure that no stress relief took place owing to the presence of porosity. CT allows obtaining spatial and size pores distribution which helps in optimization of the SLM process.
High tensile residual stresses were found at the lateral surface for samples in the as-built conditions. We observed that higher laser energy density during fabrication leads to lower residual stresses. Samples in released condition showed redistribution of the stresses due to distortion.
During their life cycle, composite structures used in aircraft structures can be subjected to high- and low-velocity impact loading. High velocity impact damage is usually easy to detect as it creates visible external damage. Low-velocity impacts are more complex to assess because, although significant damage can be generated internally, there can be little indication of external damage on the impacted surface, leading to the term BVID. Impact damage, especially barely visible impact damage, is therefore of primary concern for design and maintenance of modern aircraft composite structures. As a result there is a concerted research effort to improve the damage resistance and tolerance of these materials.
One of the great strengths of X-ray computed tomography over conventional inspection methods (ultrasound, thermography, radiography) is that it can image damage in 3D. or inter-ply interfaces. An X-ray computed tomography (CT) data processing methodology is developed to extract the through-thickness distribution of damage in curved or deformed composite panels. The method is applied to [(0°/90°)2]s carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) panels subjected to low velocity impact damage (5 J up to 20 J) providing 3D ply-by-ply damage visualisation and analysis. Our distance transform approach allows slices to be taken that approximately follow the composite curvature allowing the impact damage to be separated, visualised and quantified in 3D on a ply-by-ply basis. In this way the interply delaminations have been mapped, showing characteristic peanut shaped delaminations with the major axis oriented with the fibres in the ply below the interface. This registry to the profile of the panel constitutes a significant improvement in our ability to characterise impact damage in composite laminates and extract relevant measurements from X-ray CT datasets.
Guided waves cover comparably long distances and thus allow for online structural health monitoring of safety relevant components, e.g. lightweight composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) as used for the transportation of pressurised gases. Reliable non-destructive assessment of COPVs’ condition is not available yet due to their complex composite structure comprising a thin metal liner and a fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) overwrap. The conventional overload hydrostatic pressure testing used for the metal vessels is not suitable for the composite vessels, because it may damage the FRP overwrap reducing the service life of the COPV. Therefore, ISO and CEN defined a maximum service life of composite pressure vessels as of 15 to 20 years. To extend the COPVs’ service life and to ensure a safer usage a structural health monitoring system based on guided ultrasonic waves is to be developed.
In this contribution first results of guided waves propagation in a flat composite plate consisting of an aluminium layer firmly bonded to a carbon fibre reinforced plastic laminate are presented. Based on experimental results material properties of FRP are reconstructed by means of the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM).

An overview of the main Non-Destructive activities conducted at BAM for the microstructural characterization of Additive Manufacturing (AM) materials will be presented. Focus is made on the study of the influence of Selective Laser Melted (SLM) scan strategies on the defect population of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy using the Analyzer Based Imaging (ABI) technique available at the BAMline (BESSY II synchrotron facility). ABI technique takes advantage of X Ray refraction at interfaces to enable the determination of porosity features (orientation, homogeneity, etc.) within large volumes, otherwise not possible to image by means X ray micro Computed Tomography.
Additionally, for a SLM IN718 material, Energy Dispersive X Ray Diffraction (subsurface measurements at 100 µm depth) and neutrons diffraction (internal measurements at 3 mm depth) are combined with distortion measurements to produce a 3D description of the Residual Stress distribution throughout the entire sample.
3D structural investigations are described by X-ray laminography studies of sandwich shell segments, made of a PVC foam core, covered by non-crimp fabric glass fibre composite lay-ups processed by vacuum assisted resin infusion of epoxy. The specific scope of this study is to image transversal flaws within the foam core (joints) and of single ply overlaps. Test flaws were purposely implemented in order to simulate typical failure under cyclic load. In a dedicated test rig for shell structures, the flaw evolution/propagation is monitored by thermography and optical 3D inspection of deformation. Due to the unfavourable preconditions for classical computed tomography as of large aspect ratio, the samples were investigated by coplanar translational laminography. Its limited range of observation angles of ± 45°, results in anisotropic artefacts about the normal to the sample surface, but the typical flaws are well visualized in the as-prepared state, in a state of early damage, and in the repaired state.
The detection of cracks before the failure is highly significant when it comes to safety-relevant structures. Crack detection in metallic samples at high surface temperature is one of the challenging situation in manufacturing industries. Laser thermography has already proved its detection capability of surface cracks in metallic samples at room temperature. In this work a continuous wave (CW) laser use to generate a laser, which is using to scan the metal surface with notch. The corresponding heat distribution on the surface monitored using infrared thermal (IR) camera. A simplified 3D model for laser thermography is developed and validated with experimental results. A dedicated image processing algorithm developed to improve the detectability of the cracks. To understand the dependency of surface temperature, laser power, laser scanning speed etc. in defect detection, we carried out parametric studies with our validated model. Here we report the capability of laser thermography in crack detection at elevated temperature.
Optical lock-in thermography is a completely contactless and very sensitive NDT technique. As an optical source of energy, incandescent lamps are most commonly used because they are relatively inexpensive and offer high irradiances at the test specimen. However, they are strongly restricted by their low modulation bandwidth with a maximum modulation frequency of only about 1 Hz. The use of high-power kilowatt-class laser sources, e.g. diode laser arrays, pushes this constraint beyond 100 Hz. This allows for the exploration of the near-surface region of metals and layer systems with better and more accurate penetration depth and depth resolution. Moreover, these lasers are virtually free of any additional thermal radiation that could interfere with the “true” thermal response emitted from the heated sample. In turn, they can be easily used in a one-sided test configuration.
We present current activities with kilowatt-class high-power laser sources for advanced lock-in thermography and focus on the application of laser arrays that offer a very high irradiation strength over a large sample area beyond the mentioned advantages.

However, they are strongly restricted by their low modulation bandwidth with a maximum modulation frequency of only about 1 Hz. The use of high-power kilowatt-class laser sources, e.g. diode laser arrays, pushes this constraint beyond 100 Hz, see Fig.1.
Using the one-dimensional solution to the thermal heat diffusion equation together with the absorptance of the material which is illuminated with a harmonically modulated light source, we can calculate the temperature oscillation at the surface of a solid. As a second step, we calculate the corresponding oscillation of the total thermal emission using Stefan-Boltzmann law as a first order approximation and taking into account the emissivity of the material. Within this framework we can calculate the minimal irradiance of a light source necessary to provoke a measurable signal within a thermographic camera at a noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD) of 30 mK. In Fig. 2 this relationship is displayed for a wide spectrum of modulation frequencies and for a number of different light sources scaled to the same electrical input power and illumination area. Using this figure, it is now easily possible to analyze the range of materials to be tested using lock-in thermography, since only the materials (dotted lines) below the irradiance-vs-frequency curves (solid lines) are heated in excess of the camera’s NETD. This figure clearly shows that laser sources considerably increase the application range of lock-in thermography, since especially for metals with a high reflectance and high thermal diffusivity a high irradiance is vitally important to allow for lock-in texting.
We present current activities with kilowatt-class high-power laser sources for advanced lock-in thermography and focus on the application of laser arrays that offer a very high irradiation strength over a large sample area beyond the mentioned advantages.
Quantification of impact damages in CFRP and GFRP structures with thermography and ultrasonics
(2018)
For the quantification of impact damage in CFRP and GFRP structures, first passive thermography measurements have been performed at the front and rear side of the test specimens during low velocity impact load. After loading, the damaged structures have been investigated non-destructively with active thermography with flash excitation and with step heating and with two different ultrasonic methods (phased array and air coupled ultrasonics). The damage sizes quantified with all methods are evaluated and compared. In addition, the depth of the greatest damage inside the different test specimens is analysed.
The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) is a semi-analytical method that shows promising results in modelling of guided ultrasonic waves. Efficiency and low computational cost of the method are achieved by a discretisation of the boundary of a computational domain only, whereas for the domain itself the analytical solution is used. By means of the SBFEM different types of defects, e.g. cracks, pores, delamination, corrosion, integrated into a structure consisting of anisotropic and isotropic materials can be modelled.
In this contribution, the SBFEM is used to analyse the propagation of guided waves in a structure consisting of an isotropic metal bonded to anisotropic carbon fibre reinforced material. The method allows appropriate wave types (modes) to be identified and to analyse their interaction with different defects. Results obtained are used to develop a structural health monitoring system for composite pressure vessels used in automotive and aerospace industries.
(VGStudioMax Simulation).
The detection of delamination, rot, and cracks in wooden construction elements is a key task for nondestructive testing (NDT). Air-coupled ultrasound (ACU) is used to detect defects and damage without altering the structure permanently. Using through transmission it is possible to detect even small holes and missing adhesive. After interpretation of the inspection data, an assessment of the mechanical properties based on an appraisal of internal defects in the material is feasible. Novel ferroelectret transducers with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enable a high-precision structure recognition. The transducers made of cellular polypropylene (PP) are quite suitable for ACU testing due to their extremely low Young’s modulus and low density which result in a favorable acoustic impedance for the transmission of ultrasonic waves between the transducer and air. Thus, structures with great dimensions, thickness up to 300 mm and material densities under 500 kg/m³ can be inspected. Promising results were obtained under laboratory conditions with frequencies from 90 kHz to 200 kHz. The advantage of ACU transducers is that they do not require contact to the sample, are accurate, and cost effective. Ultrasonic quality assurance for wood is an important attempt to increase the acceptance of wooden structures and towards sustainability in civil engineering in general.
Multi-functional coatings are a key requirement for surface engineering. General demands are adhesion and long-term stability under service conditions. The modification of surfaces by means of PVD-, ECD- or hybrid processes allows an add-on functionalization of surfaces by a huge diversity of materials with both lateral and vertical micro-/nano-designs. This fact is a prerequisite for micro- and sensor-systems in lab-on-chip and sensor-on-chip technology. Two layer-based sensor principles are presented, i.e. surface plasmon resonance enhanced spectroscopic ellipsometry (SPREE) for detection of hazardous gases and magneto-optical sensors on smart-coated fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) for structural health monitoring (SHM).
The interdependence of substrate features, coating properties, and layer design is discussed firstly for gas sensitivity and selectivity of SPREE-sensors and secondly for sensitivity and selectivity of magneto-strictive coatings to mechanical strain or external magnetic fields resulting in an optical displacement of the Bragg wavelength of FBG-sensors. Moreover, generic features such long-term stability, crucial process-related fabrication conditions, and effects of operational and environmental parameters are discussed with respect to the sensor performance. It has been shown that appropriate layer design and adapted selection of layer materials (SnOx/Au, Fe/Ni:SnOx/Au; Ni/NiFe-Cu-Cr) result in improved sensor parameters and may enable new sensor applications.

Due to the multi-physical appearance of gas discharges the possibilities of interaction with their surrounding environment are very wide. Some of the most common applications are the surface or material modification and acting as an ion source for mass spectroscopy applications. Since atmosphere plasma generates a massive amount of thermal energy caused by collisions in the sheath, this temperature alternation is also able to produce acoustic waves in the ambient gas volume (as lightning and thunder), which is called thermoacoustic effect.
This talk presents an overview of the experimental acoustic analysis of surface dielectric barrier and micro hollow cathode discharges. Regarding other methods of acoustic excitation, the thermoacoustic approach benefits of its massless working principle and the proper impedance matching. In addition to the characterisation, possible applications (e.g. plasma acoustic loudspeaker or transducer for air-coupled ultrasonic testing) concerning these discharge types are presented.
The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) for prismatic structures is an efficient method for the simulation of acoustic behavior. Hence a further development of the method is of great interest. The wave propagation can be calculated for isotropic and anisotropic materials in solids. As for many applications the acoustic behavior in fluids and the behavior in case of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is subject of research, the implementation of a fluid model in SBFEM for prismatic structures is needed. In case of FSI the coupling between fluid and solid domains can be performed without additional effort when describing both domains in the same variables. Hence a displacement-based fluid description is used. As the discretized formulation leads to spurious modes, a penalty method to suppress the unphysical behavior is chosen. To validate the derived model a comparison with analytical solutions of purely fluid domains is made. As to verify that in case of FSI the model shows the right behavior, dispersion curves of water-filled pipes are calculated and compared to results obtained with Comsol.

The presentation gives a brief overview of the main goals, the used methods and the first results of the PMARS OdourSense project. In cooperation with the Moulay Ismaïl University in Meknès (Morocco), a multi-gas sensor system for odour nuisance monitoring in outdoor air and a method for testing/calibration of such devices are being developed in this project.
Austenitic stainless steel welds as well as dissimilar metal welds with nickel alloy filler material, used in safety relevant parts of nuclear power plants, still challenge the ultrasonic inspection. The weld material forms large oriented grains which lead on the one hand to high sound scattering and on the other hand – to inhomogeneity and to the acoustic anisotropy of the weld structure. The ultrasonic wave fronts propagate not linearly, as in ferritic weld joints, but along the curves, which depend on the specific grain structure of the weld. Due the influence of these phenomena, it is difficult to analyze the inspection results and to classify the ultrasonic indications, which could be both from the weld geometry and from the material defects. A correct flaw sizing is not possible.
In an ongoing research project, different techniques to improve the reliability of ultrasonic testing at these kinds of welds are investigated. In a first step (in the previous research project) two ultrasonic inspection techniques were developed and validated on plane test specimens with artificial and realistic flaws. In the ongoing project, these techniques are applied to circumferential pipe welds with longitudinal and transverse flaws.
The technique developed at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Germany uses a combination of ray tracing and synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT). To investigate the unknown grain structure, the velocity distribution of weld-transmitting ultrasound waves is measured and used to model the weld by ray tracing.
The second technique, developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP) in Germany, uses Sampling Phased Array (Full Matrix Capture) combined with the reverse phase matching (RPM) and the gradient elastic constant descent algorithm (GECDM). This inspection method is able to estimate the elastic constants of the columnar grains in the weld and offers an improvement of the reliability of ultrasonic testing through the correction of the sound field distortion. The unknown inhomogeneity and anisotropy are investigated using a reference indication and the special optimization algorithm.
Both reconstruction techniques give quantitative inspection results and allow the defect sizing. They have been compared to conventional ultrasonic testing with techniques, which are state of the art for components in nuclear power plants. The improvement will be quantified by the comparison of the probability of detection (POD) of each technique.

Analyse des Tausalzeintrages in Fahrbahndeckenbetone im Kontext der Alkali-Kieselsäure-Reaktion
(2018)
Microstructure characterisation of advanced materials via 2D and 3D X-ray refraction techniques
(2018)
3D imaging techniques have an enormous potential to understand the microstructure, its evolution, and its link to mechanical, thermal, and transport properties. In this conference paper we report the use of a powerful, yet not so wide-spread, set of X-ray techniques based on refraction effects. X-ray refraction allows determining internal specific surface (surface per unit volume) in a non-destructive fashion, position and orientation sensitive, and with a nanometric detectability. We demonstrate showcases of ceramics and composite materials, where microstructural parameters could be achieved in a way unrivalled even by high-resolution techniques such as electron microscopy or computed tomography. We present in situ analysis of the damage evolution in an Al/Al2O3 metal matrix composite during tensile load and the identification of void formation (different kinds of defects, particularly unsintered powder hidden in pores, and small inhomogeneity’s like cracks) in Ti64 parts produced by selective laser melting using synchrotron X-ray refraction radiography and tomography.
Structured illumination using high-power diode lasers generates a two-dimensional interference of thermal waves. In addition, the sources and the sample are moving relative to each other. Using different configurations, we investigate the validity of the temporal and spatial superposition principle of the heat diffusion equation for these cases both experimentally and by numerical-analytical modelling. Furthermore, we investigate the potential of this approach for non-destructive testing.
Ultrasound echo is a widely used NDT technique for determining the internal geometry of structures. Reverse-time migration (RTM) has been recently introduced to NDT applications, as an imaging method for ultrasound data, to overcome some of the limitations (e.g. imaging steeply dipping reflector) experienced by the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT), the most commonly used imaging algorithm for these measurements.
The standard implementation of RTM also experiences some drawbacks caused by its imaging condition, which is based on the zero-lag of the cross-correlation between source and receiver wavefields and generates high-amplitude low-frequency artifacts. Three alternative imaging conditions, developed for seismic data applications, were tested for their ability to provide better images than the standard cross-correlation: illumination compensation, deconvolution and wavefield decomposition. A polyamide specimen was chosen for the simulation of a synthetic experiment and for real data acquisition. The migrations of both synthetic and real data were performed with the software Madagascar. The illumination imaging condition was able to reduce the low-frequency noise and had a good performance in terms of computing time. The deconvolution improved the resolution in the synthetic tests, but did not showed such benefit for the real experiments. Finally, as for the wavefield decomposition, although it presented some advantages in terms of attenuating the low-frequency noise and some unwanted reflections, it was not able to image the internal structure of the polyamide as well as the cross-correlation did. Suggestions on how to improve the cost-effectiveness of the implementation of the deconvolution and wavefield decomposition were presented, as well as possible investigations that could be carried out in the future, in order to obtain better results with those two imaging conditions.
Solution doping of off-the-shelf plastic optical fibers (POFs) represents rather simple and cheap way for preparing custom cladding-doped POFs (CD-POFs) with short to medium lengths. CD-POFs are especially attractive for environmental sensing applications, but might be of interest for illumination task as well. In this work, the proposed doping technique is tested with three different commercial low-cost polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) POFs; Eska CK-40 and Eska GK-40 from Mitsubishi Rayon and Raytela PGU-FB1000 from Toray. The aim of the work is to aid the selection of the most suitable fiber yielding highest optical quality of prepared CD-POFs. Firstly, the optimal doping times are determined for the individual fiber types using short fiber samples. Secondly, longer 10 m CD-POFs are prepared from all tested fibers using the optimized doping procedure. Finally, attenuation of pristine POFs and prepared CD-POFs is measured using optical time domain reflectometry in order to characterize the impacts of the doping on fiber optical properties. In addition, the importance of post-doping drying procedure for CD-POF optical performance is investigated as well. The results suggest that, although doping of all tested fibers is generally feasible, Eska CK-40 is the most suitable candidate with regard to the doping efficiency and fiber post-doping performance.
While additive manufacturing (AM) is blossoming in nearly every industrial field, and the most different process are being used to produce components and materials, little attention is paid on the safety concerns around AM materials and processes.
Leveraging on our leading expertise in non-destructive testing (NDT) and materials characterization, we approach AM at BAM under two important viewpoints: first the on-line monitoring of the process and of the product, second the evolution of the (unstable) microstructure of AM materials under external loads.
These two subjects are the core of the two new-born internal projects ProMoAM and AGIL, respectively.
A detailed view of the goals and the organization of these two projects will be given, together with the expected output, and some preliminary results.
The combination of microstructural data with other experimental techniques and with modeling is paramount, if we want to extract the maximum amount of information on porous material properties. In particular, quantitative image analysis, statistical approaches, direct discretization of tomographic reconstructions represent concrete possibilities to extend the power of the tomographic 3D representation to insights into the material and component performance. I will show a few examples of possible use of X-ray tomographic data for quantitative assessment of porosity in ceramics.
Moreover, I will show how not-so-novel 2D characterization techniques, based X-ray refraction, can allow a great deal of insights in the damage evolution in microcracked (and porous) ceramics. I will show how X-ray refraction can detect objects (e.g. microcracks) below its own spatial resolution.
Finally, I will discuss the link between the microstructural findings and the mechanical properties of porous microcracked ceramics.

The main drawback in radiometric imaging is the degradation of the spatial resolution with increasing depth, which results in blurred images for deeper lying structures. We circumvent this degradation with blind structured illumination, combined with a non-linear joint sparsity reconstruction algorithm. We demonstrate this by imaging a line pattern and a star-shaped structure through a metal sheet with a resolution four times better than the width of the thermal point-spread-function. The ground-breaking concept of super-resolution can be transferred from optics to diffusive imaging by defining a thermal point-spread-function similar to the Abbe limit for a certain optical wavelength.
We propose a method based on artificial neural networks to extract strain information from wavelength-scanning coherent optical time domain reflectometry (C-OTDR) data. Our neural network algorithm performs more than two orders of magnitude faster than the conventional approach.
This is due to the highly parallel evaluation of the neural networks on a GPU accelerated computer and the fact that conventional correlation and interpolation analysis needs many Iteration steps. This opens the way for real-time C-OTDR strain sensing because the neural Network strain predictions require less time than the measurements themselves. Real-time data Analysis enables long-term sensing e.g. in structural health monitoring, because the large amount of raw data does not have to be stored but can immediately be reduced to the strain data of interest.
We show both theoretically and experimentally how the encapsulation of the active region by additional guard layers can be used to achieve a significant reduction of the built-in electric fields in polar nitride heterostructures. This reduction of the QCSE results in a strongly enhanced emission intensity and faster recombination dynamics in the active region. In particular we are able to shift the emission energy of 4-nm-thick GaN nano-discs up to 3.32 eV, which is just 150 meV below the bulk GaN bandgap as compared to a red-shift of about 1 eV in a conventional heterostructure with the same thickness.
Having been introduced almost two decades ago, Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metals has become industrially viable for a large variety of applications, including aerospace, automotive and medicine. Powder bed techniques such as Selective Laser Melting (SLM) based on layer-by-layer deposition and laser melt enable numerous degrees of freedom for the geometrical design. Developing during the manufacturing process, residual stresses may limit the application of SLM parts by reducing the load bearing capacity as well as induce unwanted distortion depending on the boundary conditions specified in manufacturing.
The residual stress distribution in IN718 elongated prisms produced by SLM was studied non-destructively by means of neutron (bulk) and laboratory X-ray (surface) diffraction. The samples with different scanning strategies, i.e. hatching length, were measured in as-build condition (on a build plate) and after removal from the build plate.
The absolute values of all stress components decreased after removal from the build plate. Together with surface scan utilizing a coordinate-measuring machine (CMM), it is possible to link the stress release to the sample distortion. Obtained results indicated different residual stress states for each of the transversal, longitudinal and normal component depending on the thermal gradient in the respective direction.

Fluorometric sensing is a versatile approach for trace analysis outside of the laboratory, requiring suitable sensor materials and their integration into sensing devices. The versatility of fluorophores as probes, especially in terms of the possibility to tailor their optical as well as their recognition properties by synthetic modifications in a wide range, renders them as superior active component for the preparation of optical sensor devices. Recent works at BAM in this field include, for example, the detection of nerve gas agents, illustrating impressively the aforementioned benefits of fluorophores in optical sensing applications.
In the interdisciplinary approach presented here, we target hazardous gases such as ammonia, benzene, and hydrogen sulfide, next to others, which pose a major threat to human health and environmental safety and for which the availability of a sensitive and reliable detection method is highly desirable.
The dyes presented follow a “turn-on” fluorescence schematic, which allows for the selective and sensitive detection of the respective gaseous analyte. The immobilization of the probe in polymeric matrices is then the next step toward the fabrication of a prototype device for molecular sensing. Further steps in the project include the assembly of instruments for test-atmosphere generation, the referencing of the sensor system, development and implementation of an optical setup, and the testing of the prototype device under laboratory conditions and in the field.
In this presentation, we give an overview over the recent developments on this topic in our groups, including fluorophore designs investigated for the detection of benzene, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide as well as approaches for the design of the sensing device.

In this presentation, we give an overview over the recent developments on this topic in our groups. Highlights are hydrogen sulfide sensitive, BODIPY based transition metal complexes, which allow for a sensitive as well as selective detection of the toxic gas. In addition, we present a novel class of highly substituted BODIPY derivatives – pocket-BODIPYs – which are of a synthetically high versatility and can readily be modified to create pockets in the periphery of the molecule of defined geometries. This is illustrated on the successful encapsulation of benzene by a pocket-BODIPY derivative, confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis as well as by further spectroscopic and analytical methods.
Practical applications of recent BAM-research results of NDT and monitoring in civil engineering
(2018)
Nondestructive testing and monitoring was of mayor interest in BAM-research related to the survey of civil engineering structures during the last two decades. Three case studies about research projects carried out at BAM were presented. All three projects focussed on the survey of parameters and safety related tasks in bridge engineering and inspection. First, the monitoring of the Berlin main station was presented with focus on the sensors developed specifically for this project. The second case study presented and application of guided ultrasonic waves to CFRP-strengthened bridges. The method was sucsessully applied to two of four different strengthening measures carried out min. 10 years ago. The last project presented the feasibility study of a network consisting of simple Bluetooth modules to survey changes in the moisture content in sand and massive concrete.
Common air-coupled transducers for non-destructive testing consist of a piezocomposite material and several matching layers. Better acoustical matching to air is achieved by transducers based on charged cellular polypropylene (PP). This material has about hundred times lower acoustic impedance than any piezocomposite, having about the same piezoelectric coefficient. The piezoelectric properties of cellular PP are caused by the polarization of air cells. Alternatively, a ferroelectret receiver can be understood as a capacitive microphone with internal polarization creating permanent internal voltage. The sensitivity of the receiver can be increased by applying additional bias voltage. We present an ultrasonic receiver based on cellular PP including a high-voltage module providing bias voltage up to 2 kV. The application of bias voltage increased the signal by 12 to 15 dB with only 1 dB increase of the noise.
This receiver was combined with a cellular PP transmitter in through transmission to inspect several test specimens consisting of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer face sheets and a porous closed-cell PVC core. These test specimens were inspected before and after load. Fatigue cracks in the porous PVC core and some fatigue damage in the face sheets were detected. These test specimens were originally developed to emulate a rotor blade segment of a wind power plant. Similar composite materials are used in lightweight aircrafts for the general aviation. The other inspected test specimen was a composite consisted of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer face sheets and a wooden core. The structure of the wooden core could be detected only with cellular PP transducers, while commercial air-coupled transducers lacked the necessary sensitivity. Measured on a 4-mm thick carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer plate, cellular PP transducers with additional bias voltage achieved a 32 dB higher signal-to-noise ratio than commercial air-coupled transducers.

The transition from X-ray film to digital detectors in radiography is accompanied by an increase of unsharpness due to the larger inherent digital detector unsharpness in comparison to film. The basic spatial resolution of digital detectors (see EN ISO 17636-2) is used today to describe this unsharpness. The geometrical unsharpness of the radiographic projection of object structures onto the detector plane is determined by the focal spot size of the X-ray tube and the magnification. The focal spot size is measured today (see ASTM E 1165) from pin hole camera exposures or edge unsharpness (see ASTM E 2903). The final image unsharpness is a result of a convolution of the geometrical and inherent detector unsharpness function, divided by the magnification factor of the object onto the detector plane. Different approximations of this convolution result in ASTM E 1000 and ISO 17636-2 in different optimum values for the magnification factor for a given focal spot size of a X—ray tube and the basic spatial resolution of the detector. The higher contrast sensitivity, an advantage of digital radiography, compared to film radiography is furthermore improved when using higher X-ray voltages as used with film and smaller focal spots of the X-ray tubes. This allows a higher distance between object and detector resulting in reduced object scatter in the image. The interactions between all these parameters will be discussed and simple rules for practitioners will be derived in this contribution.
