Absolute Isotope Ratios
(2018)
Measurement results and scientific models leading to important decisions in forensics, food fraud or climatology are based on isotope ratio data. Molar masses of multi-isotopic elements are as well based on isotope ratio data. Thus, in the case of Si, isotope ratios directly impact the redefinition of the SI base units kilogram and mole. Therefore, new strategies are required leading to new primary isotope reference materials, whose isotope ratios are traceable to the SI. This in turn will ensure the comparability of isotope ratio data and will render the traceability exception requested by the CCQM superfluous. Such new procedures will be developed for the key elements S, Si, Ca, Sr and Nd at relative uncertainty levels of ≤ 0.01 %.
COMAR, the international database for certified reference materials (CRM) has been improved by BAM for the benefit of CRM users and producers worldwide. The usefulness of reference materials (RM) is beyond question. RM provide "measurement benchmarks" for materials testing and chemical analysis and ensure reliability and worldwide comparability of measurements in these fields. The use of RM is a basic requirement for quality assurance. In addition CRM are very important for establishing traceability, especially in chemical analysis. Even in the age of web based technologies and services finding a proper reference material is a demanding task especially for newcomers or for new kind of materials. The best choice ist to use reference material databases that collect data from several RM producers and provide information in a uniform way. COMAR has been established to help laboratories to find the proper CRM needed. The database gives information on the worldwide availibility of certified reference materials. BAM has recently improved COMAR in order to make searching in COMAR more simple and target-orientated and to make the process of updating data more efficient.
Three new offset Delta11B isotope reference materials for environmental boron isotope studies
(2011)
The isotopic composition of boron is a well established tool in various areas of Science and industry. Boron isotope compositions are typically reported as 5nB values which indicate the isotopic difference of a sample relative to the isotope reference material NIST SRM 951.
A significant drawback of all of the available boron isotope reference materials is that none of them covers a natural boron isotope composition apart from NIST SRM 951. To fill this gap of required 5UB reference materials three new solution boric acid reference materials were produced, which cover 6096o of the natural boron isotope Variation (-20 to 40%oo B) of about 100%o. The new reference materials are certified for their B values and are commercially available through European Reference Materials® (http://wwrv.enn-cmi.org). The newly produced and certified boron isotope reference materials will allow straightforward method Validation and quality control of boron isotope data.
