A semi-automatic thermographic procedure for the assessment of the welded area of resistance projection welded joints has been developed. Currently, to assess the quality of RPW joints destructive tests are used and the more commonly used non-destructive technique is the ultrasonic one. The possibility for a quantitative evaluation of the welded area by thermographic technique has been proved by means of an innovative procedure applied on steel RPW joints with ‘as it’ surface conditions. Measurements obtained by thermography and ultrasound have been compared, to verify the developed procedure.
minimum explosion concentration (MEC) and limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) in our recent works. This work further studies the reasonability and reliability of the alternative method experimentally and theoretically. Six different dust samples were tested via a 20-L spherical explosion chamber. The experimental results showed that the data of MEC and LOC determined by using the alternative and the standardized methods are in good agreement. The minimum flame propagation velocity (Sf) and the corresponding maximum combustion duration time (tc) were found at its MEC and LOC, suggesting that the theoretical analysis can well explain all the experimental data. It is the first time to study the theoretical basis of the explosion criterion, thus helping to improve our understandings of dust explosion characteristics, and to amend the explosion criterion in future test standards.
Manufacturing austenitic stainless steels (ASSs) using additive manufacturing is of great interest for cryogenic applications. Here, the mechanical and microstructural responses of a 316L ASS built by laser powder bed fusion were revealed by performing in situ neutron diffraction tensile tests at the low-temperature range (from 373 to 10 K). The stacking fault energy almost linearly decreased from 29.2 ± 3.1 mJm⁻² at 373 K to 7.5 ± 1.7 mJm⁻² at 10 K, with a slope of 0.06 mJm⁻²K⁻¹, leading to the transition of the dominant deformation mechanism from strain-induced twinning to martensite formation. As a result, excellent combinations of strength and ductility were achieved at the low-temperature range.
Interpreting high-temperature corrosion induced by mixed-gas atmospheres is challenging due to the different contributions of oxidizing gases. Here, a comprehensive study on the combined oxidation/sulfidation using label molecules is presented. Fe-Cr model alloys with 2 wt% and 9 wt% Cr were isothermally exposed using a volumetric mixture of 0.5%S16O2/27%H218O and 0.5%S16O2/7%H218O at 650 ◦C for 5 h and then characterized by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Additionally, the reactions were followed in-situ utilizing energy dispersive X-ray diffraction. The study showed that both S16O2 and H218O contribute to the oxidation of the alloys but to different extents depending on the Cr-content.
Considering the availability of serological and molecular biological methods, the bioassay has been paled into insignificance, although it is the only experimental method that can be used to demonstrate the infectivity of a virus. We compared goodness-of-fit and predictability power of five models for the quantification of tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) based on local lesion assays: the Kleczkowski model, Furumoto and Mickey models I and II, the Gokhale and Bald model (growth curve model), and the modified Poisson model. For this purpose, mechanical inoculations onto Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Xanthi nc and N. glutionosa L. with defined virus concentrations were first performed with half-leaf randomization in a Latin square design. Subsequently, models were implemented using Python software and fitted to the number of local lesions. All models could fit to the data for quantifying ToBRFV based on local lesions, among which the modified Poisson model had the best prediction of virus concentration in spike samples based on local lesions, although data of individual indicator plants showed variations. More accurate modeling was obtained from the test plant N. glutinosa than from N. tabacum cv. Xanthi nc. The position of the half-leaves on the test plants had no significant effect on the number of local lesions.
The current paper develops a novel accelerated corrosion test method based on Faraday’s law to investigate the performance of different inhibitors in reinforced concrete elements under electrical voltage. Using the proposed method two commercially available and three lab-made inhibitors were tested. Lab-made inhibitors based on potassium fluorosilicate and amine carboxylate showed the best performance over others. Furthermore, it is found that under an electrical potential environment beyond 3.6 V, the higher the concrete strength, the more efficient is the corrosion inhibition. Based on experimental results, a novel model describing the corrosion evolution in reinforced concrete was proposed.
The structural build-up of fresh cement paste is often considered as a purely thixotropic phenomenon in literature even though cementitious materials undergo a non-reversible hydration process that can have an influence on the structuration process. In the current paper a method is proposed to validate the impact of the non-reversible structural build-up. It is shown that fresh cement paste samples lose their structural gain almost completely due to thixotropy while the structural build-up due to hydration can be observed but occurs in a significantly lower order of magnitude over the course of the first hours of hydration. In addition, it is shown, that the chemical component of the structural build-up accelerates with the onset of the acceleration period of hydration, while its contribution in the entire structural build-up remains constant.
The retardation mechanism of cement hydration as imparted by the addition of polyphosphate comb superplasticizer to model cement containing C3S, C3A and calcium sulfate hemihydrate is studied using XRD, ss NMR and calorimetry. Our findings show the retardation effect caused by the direct addition of polyphosphate comb superplasticizer differs significantly to that of conventional polycarboxylate superplasticizers. Conversely to polycarboxylates, polyphosphates, at a low dosage, inhibits the silicate reaction without affecting the aluminate reaction and formation of ettringite. Yet, at high doses, both reactions are hampered, and the induction period extended, followed by accelerated aluminate and silicate reactions.
Many advanced materials consist of fibers. They are used as nonwovens, fabrics, or in composite materials. Characterization of individual fibers allows us to predict resulting material properties. We present a measurement setup and analysis software to characterize individual, micrometer-sized fibers fast and reliably. The setup is based on the lock-in thermography principle. Thermal diffusivity values of seven reference samples agree very well with previously reported values. We use our setup to investigate critical measurement parameters like excitation frequency, excitation power, pixel size, and fiber orientation. Our results show that fibers with subpixel diameters can be measured even if they are not aligned. However, special care has to be taken to choose an adequate excitation power. Measurements at high intensities can underestimate thermal diffusivity even though the raw data looks reasonable. By automatically measuring at different excitation powers, our setup solves this issue.
A novel biomaterial comprising alginate dialdehyde-gelatine (ADA-GEL) hydrogel augmented by lysozyme loaded mesoporous cerium doped silica-calcia nanoparticles (Lys-Ce-MSNs) is 3D printed to create bioactive scaffolds. Lys-Ce-MSNs raise the mechanical stiffness of the hydrogel composite scaffold and induce surface apatite mineralization, when the scaffold is immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF). Moreover, the scaffolds can co-deliver bone healing (Ca and Si) and antioxidant ions (Ce), and Lys to achieve antibacterial (and potentially anticancer) properties. The nanocomposite hydrogel scaffolds can hold and deliver Lys steadily. Based on the in vitro results, the hydrogel nanocomposite containing Lys assured improved pre-osteoblast cell (MC3T3-E1) proliferation, adhesion, and differentiation, thanks to the biocompatibility of ADA-GEL, bioactivity of Ce-MSNs, and the stabilizing effect of Lys on the scaffold structure. On the other hand, the proliferation level of MG63 osteosarcoma cells decreased, likely due to the effect of Lys. Last but not least, cooperatively, alongside gentamicin (GEN), Lys brought about a proper antibacterial efficiency to the hydrogel nanocomposite scaffold against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Taken together, ADA-GEL/Lys-Ce-MSN nanocomposite holds great promise for 3D printing of multifunctional hydrogel bone tissue engineering (BTE) scaffolds, able to induce bone regeneration, address infection, and potentially inhibit tumor formation and growth.
