The objective of this study is to find out, to what extent the geochemical characteristics of lapis lazuli can be utilized in respect to its provenance. A wide range of variables is taken into consideration depending on the quantity of samples analysed from a specific geological region and the methods applied. In order to provide evidence, a multi-technique analytical approach using µXRF, ESEM, PGAA and PIXE is applied to samples from the most famous deposits of lapis lazuli. Special elements determined as fingerprints are compared in relation to the forming conditions obvious in textural features. The results and statistical output allow a differentiation that enables an optimized local classification of the blue stone. An absolute requirement for all geo-tracing performed on blue colored cultural objects of unknown provenance is awareness of the limits of analysis. The possible sources of lapis lazuli are tested by analysing the blue pigment used as paint on murals and ink on manuscripts from the Silk Road.

High Speed X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy with pnCCDs: XRF, XRD and PIXE measurements (and others)

For many years pnCCDs have been well known as X-ray detectors for spectroscopic imaging in
many fields of science: X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (XRF), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) with light
sources in large accelerator facilities as well as with laboratory light sources or with X-rays from
celestial sources in X-ray astronomy. A brief introduction in GEXRF (Grazing Emission XRF)
measurements with a laboratory laser produced plasma source will be given, PIXE (Particle Induced
X-ray Emission) measurements and D2XRF (Double Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence) and Slicing
experiments with pnCCDs coupled to polycapillary optics performed at the BESSY synchrotron will
be shown. Energy-dispersive Laue diffraction with ultra-hard X-rays for the analysis of defects
in metals will conclude the overview of spectroscopic X-ray imaging measurements in the field of
structure and dynamics of matter.
Four hundred sixteen silver coins stemming from the Ottoman Empire (16th and 17th centuries) were analyzed in order to confirm the fineness of the coinage as well as to study the provenance of the alloy used for the coins. As most of the coins showed the typical green patina on their surfaces due to corrosion processes which have led to the depletion of copper in the near-surface domains of the silver coins in comparison to their core composition, small samples by cutting splinters from the coins had to be taken, embedded in synthetic resin and cross-sectioned in order to investigate the true-heart metal composition. The type of the alloy was investigated as well as if coins minted in different locations demonstrated homogeneous traits concerning the predominant impurities which could suggest a common ore. Several X-ray based techniques (µ-XRF, µ-SRXRF and µ-PIXE) could be applied in order to determine the silver contents as well as the minor and trace elements. Finally, SEM/EDX was applied in order to study the homogeneity/heterogeneity of the coins and the presence of surface enrichments. In general, the silver content of the analyzed specimen varies between 90% and 95%. These outcomes have not supported the historical interpretations, which predict that during the period studied a debasement of approximately 44% of the silver content of the coins should have occurred.
